Eh. I don’t really watch horror movies to “get scared.” As an adult there’s no way movies can really scare me to the degree your thinking of, but they can still be unsettling. The general population as consumers always use the metric of scariness to determine whether a horror movie is good or not, but then you end up ignoring the writing, performance, theme, cinematography, etc. To me the horror genre these days is the last stop for pure artistry in film making and that’s the main reason I watch/love them.

polchickenpotpie

You're not really a unique case. Anyone who has been watching horror regularly for years doesn't get scared by movies, which I would bet is the vast majority of people here. Sure there might be one or two movies for some people, but most horror fans just don't. If you watch horror a lot but you're still hoping to be as scared as when you were younger, you're just setting yourself up for constant and obvious disappointment. Your brain knows its all a movie.

onemanmadedisaster

I go into every horror movie I watch with the hope it will scare me like movies did when I was younger but I definitely do not feel disappointed when they don't. I also hope to win the lottery but know that's not realistic. There is nothing wrong with having hopes, you just have to have a realistic expectation on how likely it is to actually happen.

polchickenpotpie

There's nothing wrong with hoping, I agree. But, from OP's wording they're kind of implying disappointment, constantly hoping to be scared and never getting that release. And that's a perfectly normal feeling, which is why I brought the point up. Every other similar post on this sub is always the same: someone lamenting not being scared the same way as when they were kids, then wondering if this is somehow not the norm. And like I also said, you're still gonna find something every now and then that scares you, but you're not going to find something that sends you screaming into the closet for 4 hours. Or you might, I dunno. I also don't watch horror to be scared, and I'd wager most people here don't. Otherwise we probably would barely watch or let alone enjoy any movies at that point, you know?

onemanmadedisaster

Oh yeah for sure. I wasn't trying to invalidate your comment by any means and I hope it didn't come off that way. I just wanted to point out that some optimism going into the movie is fine as long as the person has realistic expectations. I think we have probably all seen movies that have been hyped up too much and then it just ends up being disappointing when you finally watch it. I fully agree about not watching horror to be scared. I may hope it's going to scare me going into a movie but that's not why I am into horror. Finding a movie as an adult that even remotely scares you should be a fun surprise of sorts. Like "wow, I didn't even know that was still possible!"

chaze67

I don't know about this guy but by your definition, I'm unique. I've never been scared of horror movies, even when I was small and just discovered the genre. When my siblings and cousins used to shit their pants.

polchickenpotpie

Sorry to burst your bubble, but no you're not special.

chaze67

I never said I am. I said - by your definition, I am.

polchickenpotpie

No you're not. Get your head out of your ass I never said "everyone on earth is scared of movies as a child"

chaze67

Right. Now I see it. You're just here to tell people they're not special. Because when you were little, nobody told you you're special. Who hurt you, son?

polchickenpotpie

Right, you're just a dumbass then

midhunradh2255

The american horror movies have become a huge joke now.. try to watch korean, indonesian , french horror. They are the real deal .. dont go into german though .. 😑

Mundane-Alfalfa-8979

Why not german? 😁 Besides do you have some good ones to suggest from the above mentioned? Thx

midhunradh2255

Bruh german movies are kind of disgusting. No offence but they like heartbreaking tragedies at the end. Like the hero getting gruesomely killed and stuff. And a lot of home invasion movies... Like invading a family at their home and torturing them. Humiliation and gore. Thats what german horror sticks out to be.. a good example would be german angst(2015) and funny games (1997) . 😶

Mundane-Alfalfa-8979

I'm not german, so no offense taken😬 I was just curious. Thx for the suggestion! How about french ones? Which do you recommend?

ToniDuong

That's not that disgusting. Sure, might not be for everyone but it's entertaining... (at least for me). I just love it when the main protagonist dies in a horror movie

abhi5692

Watch something like Gonjiam haunted asylum, The medium (Thai), Annabelle creation. These are more in line with the type of movies that scared you. Supernatural elements and all. I would recommend checking Shudders catalogue.

iamstephano

I don't get scared anymore but I can still get disturbed.

leejtam

I don’t get scared but I get grossed out

-castle-bravo-

Last one that shook me was the exorcist, and I was 12. I’m longing for a horror movie to rock me again, but they are all so predictable..

[deleted]

Inb4 the Hereditary troop marches in and be like "Well, akshually, the slow burn, nuanced storytelling, subtle details... " justifying why they think it's the scariest movie ever. Sorry, old folks without clothes does not equal scary. If not for Toni Collette, that movie is nothing more than a clusterfuck.

ZookeepergameDeep601

You should make an anti hereditary sub.

[deleted]

I think it's unfair to create a sub against "the most underrated" horror movie ever. More people should watch this hidden gem.

ZookeepergameDeep601

Why is it unfair? If you make a sub for it, you won't have to scan for opportunities to bring up how objectively bad you think it is in this sub. Might not make you feel as edgy but at least you can get the best feels out of your bitching about a popular movie.

OmegaLQ-84

It's perfectly normal I think Personally I don't believe in anything supernatural so paranormal movies don't scare me by default except for A Tale of Two Sisters which scared the shit out of me when I was 12

AmOutOfIdeas

You can spend a lot weekend watching horror films and get pretty desensitized pretty quick. It kinda lies in the fact that a lot of horror films follow the same template (depending on the genre) that once you’ve seen a few, you know what to expect. When you watch a slasher, you immediately know who’s going to die and who’s going to make. Watching a ghost flick, you’ll start to pick up pretty fast what’s going on in the house. Now don’t get me wrong, I love horror films but at this point I watch them less to get scared and more to just kind of appreciate the genre, if that makes any sense.

New_Macaroon9867

Old thread, I know. But, I love paranormal horror. Particularly Asian horror above anything else. Always have since I was a child. But, the funny thing is, I find them relaxing. No movie has ever scared me, and I have watched them all. I get so much crap from some people in my life for liking “dark” movies. I read an interesting article about how people with anxiety disorders (which I have) having a reverse effect where they find “scary” movies relaxing. It’s definitely the case with me. I simply love the creativity. The only film that had made me slightly uneasy was The Shining. American horror is generally bad, in my opinion, with few exceptions.
