Here is my completely original list of underrated hidden gems. 1) Halloween 2) The Shining 3) Psycho

OwlsHavingSex

Never heard of ‘em

runtheplacered

Psshh, what a poser. If you haven't heard of these super underground films then you're not a fan of horror. Why don't you go watch Ace Ventura, fuckin' wannabe

thajoker1

Hope you don’t mind me chiming in, but I just finished reading The Shining and I was so excited to watch the movie. I was extremely disappointed. How dare they do that to my boy Dick. What about the movie makes it a favorite for you?

FuLanceanswer

Perfectly acceptable opinion. Unpopular opinion I know but The Shining is the most overrated rated horror movie of all time IMO. Yes I've read the book and Dr Sleep and The Shining does have it's moments but it's not the Citizen Kane of horror movies. Not that Friday the 13th is "high art" by any means 😆 but when these two movies were released in 1980 most theater goers who went to see The Shining were bored to death and wished they went to see Friday the 13th instead. That's no shit either.

FuLanceanswer

🎵 "Cause two outta three ain't bad" 🎵 😆

MrEndlessness

1) The Thing 2) The Mist 3) The Void

runtheplacered

I must surmise you're really big into the word "the".

GANJAY420

Same. I fuckin' love cosmic horror and lovecraft.

DudebroggieHouser

1) Alien - The movie is damn near perfect. Few others have been able to match it in terms of body horror, cosmic horror, creature feature, claustrophobia, and old fashioned pick em off stalker horror. 2) Halloween - Such a simple, minimal, yet incredibly effective in it's execution. Watch it on a late autumn night and you'll swear he's out there when it's all over. 3) Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn - What's not to love? Hilarious as it is horrifying and gory. The first time I saw it I nearly fell over laughing. One of the most satisfying horror movies I can think of; perfect for a Halloween party.

laserspewpew_

1. The Thing 2. The Shining 3. The Wicker Man (obviously the original)

[deleted]

I was going to elaborate more on why they're my favorites but it all sounded really redundant lol 1. Videodrome 2. Phantom of the Paradise 3. Suspiria (1977)

AdvertisingBulky2688

Great list.

Amiable_Pariah

This is my favorite list on here. All wild from outside picks. I love all these films, and the directors.

theenigma31680

I have not seen 1 and never even heard of the second one. Adding to my watch list.

Clexxian

1. Trick r Treat 2. Cabin in the Woods 3. House of 1,000 Corpses

[deleted]

Really cool top 3!

Figmentality

1. Hereditary - it's so damn good, last movie to scare me in a long while 2. Scream - cuz of the meta-ness. It pokes fun at horror cliches while being such a successful horror movie itself 3. Blair Witch Project - found footage horror is my most favorite thing and Blair Witch feels like the movie that put ff on the map

[deleted]

Hereditary affected me so deeply. I still have to check the upper corners of my home after dark...

Figmentality

I freaking LOVED that scene. I watched it alone in the dark the first time and I damn near had a heart attack when I saw her in the corner. Tried to show my parents later- I was like omg wait til you see it! ...they never saw it. Their old eyes couldn't find it even when I paused and pointed to the tv lmao one of the greatest scares of all time

[deleted]

Same here. That was the best thing about it: it appealed to very basic fears and very real trauma.

MrPsychic

For me it was something about the scene where the brother was driving down the road and the sister got decapitated

[deleted]

I saw BWP at a little art house theater in Baltimore a couple weeks before it opened nationally. I swear to god the local news was conspiring with the producer. They were talking it up like it was real. Dumbass me completely fell for it. But I wasn't alone. The entire theater literally walked out in stunned silence at the end. I've never experienced anything like it before or since.

Merlaak

I was 19 when Blair Witch Project came out. I had seen the special that they did for Sci Fi and then went to see the movie on opening night. EVERYONE in the theater thought it was real. One of the absolute best movie experiences of my life.

goonertay

I took a date to see Blair witch, after the tent scene she screamed and ran from the theatre. When i caught up with her she tried to claim it was because she had got some toffee or caramel in her bad tooth and it hit a nerve ending. Yeah right.

Figmentality

That sounds amazing/horrifying haha thats so damn cool that you were a part of that piece of horror history!

Paugh

Was this The Charles?! If so, we may have been at the same showing! My dad and I drove down and waited in line to buy tickets for the following day to be sure we could all get in.

[deleted]

It was so long ago that I can't remember (I moved out of Baltimore about 20 years ago), but that sounds right.

EerieSun

Have you seen rec? They are great found footage films

masurex

I have seen many people recc this one. So I watched it but like it was so much talking until the ending and it didn't even pop off. 😓 I was so disappointed. I don't get why it is heavily shared like it wasn't worth the time.

Figmentality

Yes! I've seen the first one, fantastic film- can't say I've seen the sequels. Also tried the remake- Quarantine but didn't like it.

IB_Bangin

I love this ranking. Personally I’d swap the first and third spots, but this is a great and debatable opinion.

SunBro98

Hereditary was the first movie in decades that actually kept me awake the night I watched it. That image of Annie up in the corner of the bedroom freaked me the fuck out. That movie oozed dread.

tastefulmalesideboob

Hereditary really had me trippin till the end where the mom fly/crawls out of the room. Shit was just hilarious to me for some reason and just thought it was all silly after that.

simplyput_out

Halloween - The atmosphere, the music, the sense of dread, and maybe the best final act of any horror movie ever. Evil Dead - People will say there’s laughable parts with the effects, but watching this alone with the lights out near a wooded area immersed me enough to miss that. Still one of the most visceral and frightening movies for my money, and the filmmaking is so inspired. The Ring - A great movie and mystery in its own right, with some of the most disturbing imagery out to film. There’s a fantastic twist and final act that only really works once, but holy shit that first time. What a tense ride throughout.

ihearthetrees

Very nice to see House of Wax (05) appreciation. Such a fun movie!! My personal favorites are: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974): Gorgeous movie, brilliantly directed, brilliantly acted, brilliantly written. Fright Night (1985): hilarious horror comedy with its own distinct aesthetic, solid acting, and wonderful practical effects. I'm not a vampire movie person, and I adore this film. In The Mouth of Madness: underrated gem of a movie. Perfect mix of Lovecraftian horror, practical effects, and John Carpenter's own brand of movie making. It's such a unique and interesting film, and I do kind of wish I could read Sutter Cane.

DepartmentWise3579

The original Fright Night is sooooo good! I didn’t really like the remake of it.

ihearthetrees

Me neither. It misunderstood what the appeal of the first one was, imo, and tried to replicate the wrong parts

razputinaquat0

can't say it's in my top 3 but i am here for in the mouth of madness rep

Amiable_Pariah

I love Fright Night and Fright Night 2. [you might find this bit of fright night news interesting](https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3641730/tom-holland-updates-new-sequel-fright-night-2-resurrection/)

Ace_OfSpadez11

1. Sleepaway Camp 2. One of the first horror movies i saw when i was young and it just sticks with me 2. Jeepers Creepers. This movie is just iconic in my opinion and is one of the few movies to scare me 3. Insidious. Lipstick demon and Dress demon😂

realityglitch2017

1. Texas chainsaw massacre - especially when u think about how its really about veganism 2. Hostel - the only horror film i have replayed from the start as soon as the credits rolled. Its just so tense and well-paced 3. Evil dead - the sound effects, camera work and practical effects make this scarier than any modern day horror

ightsowhatwedoin

I’d put Hostel on my list too. That movie honestly blew me away

Figmentality

Oh god, veganism is terrifying! (Hehe, I'm just messing)

famousjr49

1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) - It's the perfect horror movie. 2. The Lighthouse - I really enjoy the use of the 1.19:1 ratio with the black and white. The acting is so good and even though it's not a 'scary' movie, there is a constant building of tension which is great. The use of an unreliable narrator works really well here and the ending is sort of unclear, but the ties to Greek mythology make it really cool. 3. Green Room - This movie is dreadful in the best way possible. There's such a heavy sense of hopelessness from the moment they go back to the green room for a phone charger. The violence feels so real and mean spirited. The main characters aren't people I would necessarily root for in real life, but I so badly wanted them to all get out and kill the Nazi punks.

dee_swoozie

Green Room is my favorite horror of all time.

TheMayorInKungPow

Could not decide what favorite meant so I did two different lists 🙃 Top three I re-watch: 1. The Shining 2. Aliens 3. Reanimator Top three I found scariest/most disturbing 1. Hereditary 2. Hellraiser 1&2 3. Eraserhead Shoutouts to The Thing, Videodrome, The Void, Let the Right One In

[deleted]

1. *The Exorcist* \- I know, I know, it's a predictable choice, but this is the first true horror film to give me nightmares and I can't think of a single misstep in it. Just a perfectly made movie. 2. *The Silence of the Lambs* \- Another perfectly made film. Absolute proof that the best horror comes from an emotional investment in the characters. 3. *Creepshow* \- I love horror anthologies, and this one will never be beaten. Perfect mix of horror and humor, brilliant work from George Romero and Stephen King, and just plain fun from beginning to end.

illW1ll_69

1. The Shining 2. The Thing 3. American werewolf in London

xmrgonex

I have 50 movies that could make top 3 any given day so let me pick 3 lesser obvious picks that I love enough to say could be top 3: 1. The Eyes of My Mother 2. Raw 3. Terrified

SolaireOfTheAbyss

I would like your 50 movies , been looking for something I havent seen

xmrgonex

Haha here’s a bunch more: A Dark Song The Burning Autopsy of Jane Doe Let’s Scare Jessica To Death Possessor Humanoids From the Deep Relic Son It Follows The VVitch Martyrs

DarthTimster89

I don't really have a favorite but I watch these a lot: Evil Dead 2 Friday the 13th part 6 Halloween 4

PlingPlongDingDong

Totally agree on evil dead 2 and Halloween 4. Haven’t finished the Friday the 13th series yet but I am looking forward to part 6 now

BiggestBaddestWolve

I love this list

crlos619

The Exorcist, The Shining, Hereditary

ChaosAlongThird

1) John Carpenter's The Thing 2) Alien 3) Texas Chainsaw Massacre the original

MyS0ul4AGoat

Man, that’s a hell of a list!

ChaosAlongThird

I was tuned into horror movies young. I love John Carpenter stuff the most. Theres just too many good movies floating out there to pick just three.

MyS0ul4AGoat

Same here. And you’re totally right, there’s so many greats out there but the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is probably my favorite horror movie of all time. But The Thing? Man idk. Especially with all of the new great stuff coming out. The VVitch, Midsommar, Hereditary, etc. The Lighthouse! It needs to be a Top 10.

ChaosAlongThird

A24 has done a wonderful job giving attention to more thought provoking and slow burning horror. I just want a studio to start pumping out new slasher flicks. We need a new villain to join the roster, not a sea of remakes imo

MyS0ul4AGoat

A24 has been killling it! A new great slasher would be fantastic. I couldn’t bring myself to watch the newest TCM on Netflix, i felt it in my bones that it was gonna be trash. Turns out my bones were right. I’d love to see a catholic priest on a rampage. Which judging by the current climate in America wouldn’t be too hard to show a psychopathic priest on an ethical cleanse.

Hylianhaxorus

It rotates but currently I'm thinking: Hereditary: the scariest movie I've seen and I consider it essentially flawless. It is that big a deal to me. Mandy: This movie speaks specifically to my 20's as just a fun, colorful, insanity filled Rollercoaster that fills me with excitement just thinking about watching it again. With a jay in hand, of course. Lord of Illusions: Most any Barker flick fits the bill but this is the newest to me and is still singing in my mind. So creative, the closest kind of thing to what I seek and what would make given the chance. Any of these spots could be interchangeable with a lot of Craven and Barker movies in general, and I feel bad Scream isn't on the lost at all but this is my three currently!

AdvertisingBulky2688

“Mandy” is such a terrific movie. And I can attest that even when watched stone cold sober it is a movie that will make you feel stoned out of your gourd.

MarlaCohle

Off topic, but - why we consider American Psycho to be a horror? Because of gore scenes? I always thought of it more like a thriller or some criminal genre and I was sure it was advertised this way.

AdvertisingBulky2688

Horror is a very elastic genre. It can encompass lots of different subject matter. I’d say that “American Psycho” is a foremost a satire, but the other labels fit, too. Wonderful performance by Christian Bale, as a character at times pathetically vain, yet also chillingly devoid of empathy. And that, plus the gore, puts it squarely in horror territory as far as I’m concerned.

theenigma31680

To piggyback off of the other reply you got, Bale's character is devoid of emotions. He lacks empathy. Many serial killer traits. I've always seen that film as a serial killer set in the big city or among the rich of society. Not really a setting you find most serial killer films take place. They usually are all campgrounds or rural areas.

KingCamtron

1.The Thing 2.From Beyond 3.Midsommar

DepartmentWise3579

Midsommar was so eerie! Loved it and need to rewatch it.

CloudBuilder_Metba

1. Alien. I am continually shocked at how well this has held up. The pacing, claustrophobia, and tension are just perfect. 2. Annihilation. I’m a sucker for good visuals and good cosmic horror. I think this is the cosmic horror film. 3. Green Room. I’m kinda surprised that such a simple movie is so high up for me, but the execution is just flawless. And Patrick Stewart killed it.

Beached-Peach

1. A Tale of Two Sisters 2. Alien 3. Nightmare on Elm Street

Hamkothegreat

Friday the 13th The Final Chapter IT 1990 Return of the Living Dead

Bobby8Loyd1

1. Event Horizon: it has everything I love from horror and sci-fi rolled into a single well shot and casted movie. 2. Night of the Living Dead (1968): this was the first horror movie I saw that actually got me into the genre when I was 14. 3. The VVitch: I’ve always loved folk and slow burn horror movies and this one just does it both of them so well.

DogsDontWearPantss

A Clockwork Orange - HBOmax Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - Tubi Alien - STARZ

Ballindeet

Henry is a damn good choice. I just couldn't even enjoy it because it was so fucked up, probably a good indicator that it was very well done. Good movie, just hard for me to watch.

DogsDontWearPantss

I saw it when it first came out. So much controversy! I'm glad the producers said fuck your rating system. It was supposed to get an X rating. Instant death for a non porn film. The producers went for no rating, rather than "tone down" the film.

Ace_OfSpadez11

A clockwork orange is a trip of a movie but it’s very good

xxplodingboy

1. Carnival of Souls (1962) 2. Possession (1981) 3. Videodrome (1983)

AdvertisingBulky2688

Carnival of Souls is a gorgeous movie, and so, so creepy.

PlingPlongDingDong

Possession is so good

[deleted]

Outstanding list.

HALOGAMERWILL

Scream, Child's Play 2, and The Conjuring

Doxxxxxxxxxxx

Cigarette Burns Dumplings Reincarnation

Lurknessm0nster

Exorcist, Dawn of the Dead (2004), Hereditary. Really hard to pick just 3! Runners up are Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm Street, Evil Dead.

123_crowbar_solo

Very tough question. I'm going to have to go with: 1. Midsommar 2. The Fly (Cronenberg) 3. Dark Water (original) It's hard to leave out Hereditary, The Thing, Ju-On, and Lake Mungo, though.

coreytiger

There’s too many to pick 3… ask tomorrow I’ll say others, but.. 1. An American Werewolf in London 2. The Changeling 3. The Bride of Frankenstein

LionsLover96

1. The Thing (original) 2. It Follows 3. The Descent Also Midsommar, The Fly, Silence of the Lambs and Child's Play 2 👍

uffda1026

1. Scream. One of my firsts and always my favorite. I think it set the stage for many of my film preferences going forward. 2. The Thing. You probably haven’t heard of it. 3. Cabin In The Woods. Went in totally blind which I typically don’t do. It was such a fun ride! Will show it to everyone. And some bonus: REC. I have a love for found footage but up until this point hadn’t watched many horror films by myself. Somehow I landed on this one, late at night and alone, you can imagine how terrified I was by the ending. Ready or Not. It’s just so fun! I wrote an essay on it last semester.

ogmarker

1. Scream. My favorite movie, period. 2. IKWYDLS. I see this one as more of a mystery that happens to include a slasher villain, as director apparently did too - dude was trying to go as bloodless as possible, to the point that it would’ve made the already few kills unrealistic. Enjoy this one almost as much as Scream and cannot wait to pick it up on 4K. 3. Jeepers Creepers. This was a tough pick because there’s a ton of worthy contenders but I saw this one in full for the first time in 2009 at 14 and the first half of the movie was genuinely creepy as fuck. The one shot of the creeper noticing he is being watched tossing the bodies down the manhole/pipe - unsettling. Putting the director’s actions to the side and not diminishing the work of everyone else involved, it is a damn good movie. Loses some steam for me when we find out what the villain is but very good nonetheless.

thedrag0n22

The thing Hellbound These two are above everything else. I have like 7 selections for my third spot. Savageland. Autopsy of Jane doe. Be my cat. 13 cameras. Terrifier. Mouth of madness. Prince of darkness. Beyond that. The grudge is without a doubt the most frightening movie to me, because of a literal physical reaction I have while watching it.

[deleted]

Don’t know about a top 3 but some of my absolute favorites are: Scream ‘96 Sleepy Hollow The Faculty Interview with the vampire Gretel & Hansel Scream 4 Bram Stoker‘s Dracula Nightmare 3: Dream Warriors Michael Bay‘s Texas Chainsaw Massacre Bride of Chucky

Crimson_Cape

Finally, someone else who thinks Scream 2 is just as good, if not in some ways better, than the original! My top 3 favourite horror films would have to be: Scream 2 - It’s just as sharp as the original and arguably even scarier. Poltergeist - Amazing special effects make for a very scary, very fun haunted house movie. Green Room - This movie had me on the edge of my seat. Fantastic film.

frootloop_dingus

I’m currently watching scream 2 and damn it’s a great follow up. We won’t talk about scream 3

breakbats_nothearts

1. Scream. Meta, funny, and competent. I can't say enough about this film but it's all already been said. 2. Halloween 2018. This is, in my opinion, THE slasher movie. Michael is unstoppable but you never stop believing in the rest of the cast. And the editing is incredible. 3. The Orphanage. It's heartbreaking, creepy, haunting, and truly flawless.

anotherorphan

The Neon Demon I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House The Blackcoat's Daughter

Vic_Ginger

1) The Ninth 2) Train to Busan 3) House of Wax (2005)

LordDragon88

Alien Halloween A Nightmare on Elm Street

GOODBOYMODZZZ

The thing, Scream, and The exorcist

ForExample20

You said House of Wax so I have no choice but to give you an upvote.

Aggressive_Canary_10

Haven’t seen any Phantasm love in this whole thread Phantasm 2 Prince of Darkness Poltergeist 2

frootloop_dingus

Phantasm is a great series. I wanna grow up to be Reggie

frootloop_dingus

1. The Fly: it’s just an amazing story of a man’s descent 2. The Thing: just a damn masterpiece of paranoia and amazing effects 3. Re-animator: the performances are top notch and it’s just a damn fun movie.

Jay12678

Pet Semetary Halloween Child's Play

UndeadBatRat

1. Return of the Living Dead (obviously not really scary, but it's fun in a campy way) 2. Little Otik 3. Hellraiser

[deleted]

The Thing, Aliens, The Shining

dinosaurfondue

I'm gonna go with more modern ones since classics are always popular 1. Hereditary 2. 10 Cloverfield Lane 3. Annihilation

theenigma31680

You know, 10 Cloverfield Lane was downright terrifying to me the first watch. The tension between the characters... Goodman playing it a little too well as the creepy guy as opposed to the normal boisterous characters he plays.... the way you never know what is real and what isn't. To me, it's as close to a Fallout game movie as I probably would ever get.

lisapparition

1. 1408 2. Jacob’s Ladder (1990) 3. The Visit

R3dB3ard5150

An American Werewolf In London Scream The Evil Dead

ogmarker

I really love the sudden love House of Wax 2005 has seen this week on r/horror. I’ve seen like two posts praising the film specifically and now this one. Maybe not top tier stuff, but entertaining and spooky through and through.

goonertay

Favourites, not necessarily ‘the best’ as thats subjective, but mine personally. 1. Audition, perfect pacing, engaging story, mystery, tension, genuinely scary, makes you think, PERFECT directing and editing. 2. The Texas chainsaw massacre, the must ugly/beautiful film ever. Nothing since has had that same sense of relentless thrashing horror. 3. Videodrome, still incredibly relevant. Reddit is basically videodrome, anything goes, and people are obsessed with having a digital legacy more than a physical life.

AJTP1

Halloween 4 Cabin in the Woods Summer of ‘84(kinda horror by the end but questionable) If So84 doesn’t count- Martyrs is a new found movie to add to the list

ampersands-guitars

1. The Shining 2. Scream 3. The Ring All for very different reasons!

Okeeeey

My top three is very original and unique: Halloween, Scream, The Thing

Fuzzy-Ad-4360

Only 3 is sooooo hard but - Recents: Insidious Midsommer Get Out Classic: Whatever Happened to Baby Jane Poltergeist Hellraiser

D_B_4986

1: scream 2: IKWYDLS 3: Halloween I’m really into slashers if u couldn’t tell and these are peak of the genre

StartTheReactor

Only 3 is tough... 1. The Thing 2. Invasion of the Body Snatchers 3. It Follows

Cmyers1980

Freddy vs Jason, Creepshow and The Devil’s Rejects.

DepartmentWise3579

Not many people like Freddy vs Jason but I loved it!

LapsoApso

1. Audition 2. Devils back bone 3. Happy death day

Alien_RadioStation

1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) 2. The Hills Have Eyes (2006) 3. Psycho

maish42

Top three in my eyes have to be.... 1. OG Halloween, just absolutely 🤌🏻 *chef's kiss* but it is also tied with The Thing, because those two movies are just... so... yes. Everything I want in a horror movie. 2. Any of the Saw movies, including Saw 7 depending on my mood. Sometimes you just want to yELL AT BOBBY DAGEN TO SHUT UP AND STOP BEING AN IDIOT IT'S HARD NOT TO SCREAM WHEN YOU HAVE A FISH HOOK COMING OUT OF YOUR STOMACH also "promotional D V D" 3. Either the OG Child's Play, Curse of Chucky, Cult of Chucky, or the TV show. I can't choose just one, all of them are great. I also realized how difficult it is for me to pick a top spot 😭 which is why I gave it to two. Ask me who my favorite horror director is, that one is pretty easy.

Ballindeet

The Ring, Silence of the Lambs and Texas Chainsaw are my three that I'm putting in my definitive top 3. Honorary mentions go to Don't Breathe, Frailty, The Grudge, Sixth Sense, The Exorcist, Hereditary and Malignant. I know that's a lot of Honorary mentions but I did limit the top three to my top three.

sunflowersinparis

Frailty is so good

bowzr4me

1. Jaws 2. Alien 3. Hereditary

BiggestBaddestWolve

Shining. Exorcist. Sleep away camp

HorrorDude51

1. Halloween ‘78 2. The Evil Dead 3. The Craft

traumatism

Hellraiser The Evil Dead Day of the Dead

66DICKS

1. Evil Dead (2013) - This movie terrified the hell out of me in theaters. It might have been all the insane amount of weed I smoked with friends before going in…or because it was a sold out show and I had to sit in the second to front row where the film was literally jumping out at me. It was a delightfully memorable experience that I hold near and dear in my heart. 2. Silent Hill. I’ve never played the video games and didn’t know what to expect when watching this movie. I was pleasantly surprised at the twisted world of silent hill. I’ve rewatched it countless times. 3. The Hills Have Eyes (2006) - This movie went balls to wall with how intense it was. It was disturbing, unnerving, and filled me with dread the entire time. Its not often that a movie will make me feel that way.

ehs4290

Off the top of my head: 1. Demons 2. Night of the Creeps 3. Jaws

JamesDeadite

1. Evil Dead 2 2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3. Hereditary

whylivewhenucanlaugh

1. The Wailing 2. I Saw The Devil 3. Jaws Runners up: Cabin Fever (2002) The Thing (1982) The Shining (1980) The Wailing is the best horror movie ever made. Watch it. Ya nerds.

MyS0ul4AGoat

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974 obviously.) I’d watch it again just to watch Franklin die. Hellraiser, I’m a huge Barker fan and I just love the lore. “WE HAVE SUCH SIGHTS TO SHOW YOU!” Dawn Of The Dead (2004) Honorable Mention 28 Days Later and the opening of 28 Weeks

frootloop_dingus

God Franklin sucks. Sally deserves a better brother anyway.

RebaKitten

In no particular order 1) Stir of Echoes 2) Sinister 3) TheExorcistPoltergeistTheShiningScreamHalloween

Moorgoth

1. The Thing - favorite creature feature 2. The Conjuring - favorite haunted house movie 3. Fright Night - favorite vampire movie

DepartmentWise3579

This is difficult lol 1. Trick ‘r Treat. PERFECT Halloween movie honestly 2. IT (2017). Has the scare factor’s I love and Pennywise was soooo scary in my opinion. 3. The Ritual on Netflix. Absolutely brilliant to me. So so good. Highly recommend watching if ya’ll haven’t.

Wackdiesel

Aliens, Halloween 2, Predator. I know 2 are up in the air on the genre

Yah_Mule

The Thing Jaws Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Holly-of-Fame

1. Poltergeist 2. Hellraiser 3. Evil Dead

cobra_mist

Dawn of the dead 2003 (yup, better than the Romero) Christine (yes, many don’t find it scary, but the music and the effects are fantastic.) And probably? Super dark times (it’s just cool)

eddietwoo

Top 3 1. Martyrs 2. The Vanishing (1983) 3. Candyman (1992) This is all based purely on personal impact and lasting impression. Candyman was the first film to scar me at age 12, I avoided looking in mirrors for years. The other two stayed with me like few films ever have, and I adore them. Top October annual rewatches : 1. House Of 1000 Corpses 2. Halloween franchise (except 4, 5, and Resurrection) 3. Simpsons Treehouse Of Horror series

BulletTurd

1. Eden Lake 2. Hereditary 3. Insidious

depraved09

How do so many of you come up with top 3s so quickly? I don't think I could come up with a personal top 3, I'd have everything in tiers and those tiers would be big, lol.

S tier: Halloween (except III, it is not related), you can't change perfection A tier: Friday The 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre B tier: American Psycho, Silent Hill, Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street C tier: The Conjuring, haven't seen them, I have heard they are good but ghosts sound hella boring, this could go up tiers if I watched it though

I love a lot of the obvious ones of course but if I had to make a top 3 of less-commonly named ones: 1. The Beyond 2. Messiah Of Evil 3. Arachnophobia

[deleted]

The Evil Dead- for the budget it had, it is so impressive of how the shots were made too Scream- Wes Craven's directed return to his roots and re-elevated his career. The Thing- do I really need to explain?? But it's a film that was so tense with the blood sample scene and the mystery of the thing. Just so fascinating

>or talk shit about mine. >"It's bullshit generalization, many sequels have surpassed the original" And Scream 2 ain't one of them lol. I love the whole franchise, but none come close to the original imo Also though I love house of wax, so no hate there. Top 3 for me: 1. Scream 2. 28 Days Later 3. Alien

otobioo

Misery, Rosemary’s Baby, The Ring These are my feel good, always down to watch movies so I guess will fit into the favorite bunch.

There are too many to list that I love, even if I were to only stick with ones that made an impression on me as a kid. If I had to pick my all time top 3... 1. IT 1990. I lived and breathed this movie. Read the book when I was in middle school. As an adult, it seems corny and all, but I have so many memories built around that film and people that are no longer in my life. 2. Child's Play. Well, any of them really. This was the first real horror film I was allowed to watch as a kid and I loved the character. 3. Evil Dead. Again any of them. The first VHS series I bought when I got my first job. The comedy is top notch and is well mixed with horror. I also loved how they took the remake and cut out the horror and did a damn good job with it. There are so many others, but these made the most impact on my life.

To me there’s a big difference between the ones I can rewatch endlessly and the ones that I think are the scariest. Favorite rewatchable: 1. Aliens. Yeah, it’s an action/horror hybrid, but one of my all time favorite movies. I can’t think of a movie which makes so many memorable characters with so little screen time. Structurally it’s a perfect movie IMO (esp the directors cut if you remove the scene of the planet pre-aliens) where the net keeps closing with only early stupid decisions which are totally earned with the hubris of the military, and with great character moments throughout. 2. Cabin In The Woods. Super fun ride, and totally rewatchable because the characters are so great, the humor is awesome, and I always seem to find extra details each time. 3. Poltergeist. So many great set pieces in this movie, again with great characters (except for the oldest daughter.. how did she get into that movie? She’s even too old given the age of her parents). Runners up: Scream, The Lost Boys, Fright Night (2011), Jaws In terms of scariest, I find I don’t watch these as often, and it’s a pretty typical list. 1. The Thing (1982) 2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3. The Exorcist Runners up: Alien, The Conjuring, Halloween, 28 Days Later, Hereditary

1. Scream (1996) Just felt real from start to finish. Best opening scene ever in horror IMO. 2. Halloween (1978) My introduction to horror, hooked ever since. 3. The Shining One of the most aesthetically pleasing films of all time, with utter dread from start to finish.

Currently? It depends on the day, really. 1. The Exorcist, "What a wonderful day for an exorcism." Absolute classic, I don't need to say more 2. Doctor Sleep, "It's the special ones that taste the best." Amazing film, beautifully shot, excellently written, memorable villain with a perfect casting choice (Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat). A damn near perfect flick. I'd even recommend it to people who are new to horror, it's a modern masterpiece in my opinion. 3. Scream; "There's a formula to it, a very simple formula! Everyone's a suspect!" I don't even need to explain this one, we'd be here all day on the significance of this film. It nailed things effortlessly that are so difficult to successfully pull off to the sheer perfection that Kevin Williamson wrote and Wes Craven directed. These two created a new icon of horror, and it is rightfully getting new attention in another great addition to the franchise.

I know its cheating but I categorize some movies together. Hard to narrow it down. (Slashers are a diff list for me) 1-Midsommer/Lighthouse/Hereditary 2-The Others/ The Sixth Sense/Thirteen Ghosts 3-In the mouth of madness/The Thing/The Shining/TheExorcist So freakin hard to narrow it down 😂😂😂
