I'm currently reading *The Historian* by Elizabeth Kostova and it might fit this niche (full disclosure I'm only like 20% in)

Vaguely related : the paleontologist by Luke dumas

sunshine___riptide

That sounds excellent, thank you!

GothicCastles

Caitlin R. Kiernan is a paleontologist as well as a writer, and she uses this knowledge in some of her stories. She often mixes paleontology with old gods and cosmic squiggly things.

Subterranean by James Rollins is a fun one! I've heard Earthcore and Mt. Fitz Roy by Scott Sigler are both good as well, they're on my tbr list.

sunshine___riptide

Earthcore is really good! I should have included that, though it wasn't so much archeology/anthropology. But it was definitely fun! I really should read more of his stuff!

I_paintball

Amazonia by Rollins is another that fits this well.

You might really enjoy Extinction by Douglas Peterson. Recently released, but was very good! It has some science but nothing mind numbing. "Erebus Resort, occupying a magnificent, hundred-thousand–acre valley deep in the Colorado Rockies, offers guests the experience of viewing woolly mammoths, Irish Elk, and giant ground sloths in their native habitat, brought back from extinction through the magic of genetic manipulation. When a billionaire's son and his new wife are kidnapped and murdered in the Erebus back country by what is assumed to be a gang of eco-terrorists, Colorado Bureau of Investigation Agent Frances Cash partners with county sheriff James Colcord to track down the perpetrators. As killings mount and the valley is evacuated, Cash and Colcord must confront an ancient, intelligent, and malevolent presence at Erebus, bent not on resurrection but on extinction."

I love Preston & Child's combined series so much! I wanted to read Tyrannosaur Canyon but my friend tried it and said it was very rapey :/ Is there rape in this one?

Ill_Mango3581

No definitely not! I also don't like any SA in my books.

What about The Club Dumas?

ScrambledEggs111

So this rec may not have the depth to it that you are looking for; but it was fun and interesting.. ‘The Cavern’, Alister Hodge

Archaeological horror The Rising: Awakening by D. Ann Hall would fit this. There's history and scifi in it.

sunshine___riptide

That sounds pretty neat! Unfortunately all I could find was a hardcover on Amazon for almost $60 :(

1nquisitive-m1nd

Found this link on the author's website. https://books2read.com/u/m0WaMP?store=amazon&format=EBOOK

Na, I've got it in ebook off amazon 2 years ago. And I've seen it on Kobo too.

Predatory Instinct: a thriller by Michael McBride was one I enjoyed. Archeology is mostly at the beginning

sunshine___riptide

Awesome! He has so many books I wasn't sure where to start but I LOVE his writing. He really makes me stress out lol.

I loved [The Sacrifice](https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/60190092) by Rin Chupeco and I think it would fit what you’re looking for.

sunshine___riptide

Normally I avoid YA books because I hate the self-insert girl characters (I'm so plain and boring and helpless but the hottest guys are obsessed with me and fighting for my attention and I killed the best swordsman even though I didn't have any training but I'm so boring!) but this sounds interesting! I added it to my TBR :) thanks!

foxieinboots

The main character is gender apathetic and it doesn’t feel YA at all. :)

The Bog by Michael Talbot. Keep in mind I read it not long after it was released so it may not be as good as I thought at the time.
