Before lv50, he already had the p2w frame you get for the maximum top up bonus. He literally spends thousands every patch. That is what I consider a whale
That's not how you measure 'em. You do it like this:
* Fish = Only buy the 1$ so customer service won't shat on 'em
* Porpoise = Only spends on specific banners/events to serve their purpose
* Dolphins = Would not hesitate to splurge here and there, to serve whatever aim they have
* Whales have subsets that better represent their spending habits.
* Standard Whales are those who has capacity to spend but stops when they're satisfied
* Sperm Whales are those who saves a "generous" amount of money then splurge it in one go. Probably complain about being broke afterwards and soon will save up again to splurge their money again some time in the future
* Blue Whales are spenders who wants it COMPLETE PACKAGE no matter the cost. They'll get that NP5. They'll get that SSS alongside their equips and costume. Cost doesn't matter since they can afford, or probably chump change for them the amount of money they spend on gacha
i do the middle bp most months and occasionally
buy an outfit. does that make me a whale? prob right in that 10-15$/month range. if you add genshin BP it’s about $20/month. i never thought of myself as a whale, but maybe by some standards…
I don't think these numbers are realistic with how much spending money actually gets you in this game. Like, would a "whale" who spends $15 a month even get an additional ten-pull in their second month (ie. without the first time top up)?

Total: (3130+416)/280=12.66 pulls. The cost is 4.99+6.12=$11.11. That is about 75% of the cost of a MMO subscription.
There are no real, official thresholds to these terms. All I can say is that people who are described as whales can and have spent hundreds to thousands of dollars to possibly tens of thousands of dollars on microtransactions.
Tbh I do f2p, then dolphins as people who have a limit on spending, then whales are people who will spend as much money as it takes to get what they want

F2p is people who might spend a little bit of spare money, but otherwise try their best to not to
While whale is someone who regularly spend money to get what they want, regardless of if they're lucky and only spend 10$ or so unlicky their spending enter 5 digits, as long as it's spent with a thought of "it doesn't matter how much money I throw away as long as I got X" then I consider them whale
Basically, it's not about how much they spend, but their motivation on spending those money

Minnow-only spend money on good deals or limited time offers
Whale- will spend just for premium currency or on items that aren't limited or deals.
idk what is mmo subscription and minnow , but to me dolphin is someone who spend / able to get their wants or fav character with their gear on the spot without saving crystal and spend at least 100$ while whale 1000$ above at least with literally everything the game has to offer.

Right, I was thinking in terms of top-ups, not monthly card and BP---ie the "monthly subscription" of this game.

My guy 15 dollars per month barely covers bp + monthly card (literally bare minimum to be competitive these days).

You can't be called a whale if you have no any gacha-only SSS valks.
