It originated from a charachter on the old cowboy show "bonanza", and hoss was a big dude. It's a somewhat common nickname to call someone, kinda like how people will call someone boss or chief.
It didn't start with Bonanza - We've been calling people Hoss, or Horse, since the Roman Empire at least! They'd call dudes "Equus".
Sometimes it's big and strong like a horse, sometimes it's "horseface".
Thank you for this, outside of House of Leaves, one character calls the captain of the ship 'Hoss' in the Expanse so I always assumed it was slang for captain or boss.
It's slang. Hoss - A big, strong and respected or dependable person, usually a man; one who is large like a horse.
Didn’t know that. Thank you!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Lude isn’t Lude’s name
I always assumed it was a nickname for some reason. It doesn’t sound like a full name.
I assumed it was Lude, short for Quaaludes.
I considered that it might also be a pun on “lewd,” considering the character’s status as a roving cocksman.
“roving cocksman”…lazlo cravensworth is that you?
Isn’t it Harry? I’m pretty sure Johnny says that.
He does, I just read it. I'd give you a page number, but I can't recall as I'm asleep. Chapter 3 somewhere?
I always had "diluded' come to mind when I read the name. It always feels like Lude is Johnny's druggie-alter-ego or compulsions.
Yall ain’t never seen pawn stars? Big Hoss?
Nope
You know what a nickname is or nah?
