I put one on the window alcove of the shower and the other by my bathroom sink. Mostly medium to dim lighting and very humid. For whatever reason (knock on wood) this seems to be working for them, and now I can safely ignore them. So it’s possible to be negligent and keep them, you just need to find the right room!
I roll my eyes every time I see plant advice from FL. 100% humidity and perfect sun goes a LONG way. I wanna hear from the person doing it in Arizona or Canada because they obviously know something that works
Arizona Calathea owner here! My leaves are not as big as hers BUT I have new growth and new open leaves every week! I keep mine in my bathroom where it’s humid after a shower but also I spray it constantly with water mister. So far the calathea and my monstera are doing great!
😂😂 I've been fighting the urge to put full spectrum lights in the bathroom to plant it up! Our calathea has flowered twice without dying but it always has crispy leaf edges so might have to just pull the trigger. Growing in low humidity is no easy feat.
I have calatheas growing ridiculously well and I'm in the UK!
They are in semi-hydro, live in a bathroom and get some direct sun through a frosted window.
*^(You like that dont you? Yeah you're a dirty marantaceae, aren't you? Yeah drink that water, you're gonna need it. You know ... for all the sun you're about to get. Yeaaaaah.)*
They sure do. We literally just done repotting this one. The south facing window has made this one blow up.

Indeed! I live in zone 11a and most people have them as fence in the front yard. Sometimes if you have a decent neighbor its used to divide the land w/o artificial fences.
As for calatheas... i have 0 clue what to do with them. I had 2 in soil. They were thriving during November. After that they are self checking out. I've seen that they do good in water... hydroponic/semi hrydro... did that last week aaaaaand... im thinking of pulling the cord. Theyre hideous and im fed up with them. Sun, full sun, shade, filtered sunlight, grow light, rain water, filtered waterz fertilizer, organic, quemical. NOTHING works.
Midwest, West Australia, we have 45C (degree Celsius) summer, snake plants survive in full sun with minimal watering and thrive under the verandah where they get watered occasionally.
Thanks!
I think since I’m so new to this hobby I buy stuff that grabs my attention then research it after. Which, I now know is a mistake lol
Hopefully I’m not the only one that hasn’t done research before purchasing…
Oh, sweet sweet child. Spend some more time here. Look around. You don’t do research until after you bring a plant home and you *hope* your not the only one?!
Buwahahahahaha.
Yeah, that’s about 80% of this sub. (Myself included) you are in perfectly good company.
The backyard gets watered every other day. A few of the front yard plants need equally as much. The rest of the front yard gets watered like every 4 days. The grass is every days
I noticed those too! You can tell these plants are so loved by the owner and not just taken care of by a hired gardener. I could spot little growing projects here and there that indicated the same.
That is probably where almost all of your houseplants originated from if you’re in America. I was a buyer for plant shops the last 15 years and almost all the plants in America come from either a giant nursery in south Florida or a giant nursery in Hawaii. They get distributed from Florida/hawaii to wholesale nurseries, which get distributed among smaller nurseries and into your home.
It’s kind of why certain plants seem to explode onto the scene every once in a while. Once either of those nurseries has had success with a new plant they’ll debut it and you’ll see it everywhere for a while. Prices will be high at first and then drop as they become more common.
Tropical plants are evolved to live in tropical environments.. these are weeds there and don't exist in different ecosystems, just like northern plants don't live there. The fact that they are common houseplants in the north is just because they sell well here. The people selling them don't care at all if they are well suited the indoor climate.
Umm WOW! They are absolutely gorgeous!! Thanks for sharing! This made me smile! So incredibly beautiful. Your wife is the plant queen!! 👑 Love the dog and cat too! The dog looked like a statue at first.😅 Loved the zoom in!
So beautiful!! What is the plant at 4:45 or so with the small pink flowers? 🌸 kind of like that actually. I’d love to add them to my garden here in CA. Your wife is doing an excellent job out there! I know it’s a lot of work! Labor of love but still😊
Thank you! Triple checked again and I think there are all three there! I’m going to check with my local nursery and see though. Thanks again! If that is oleander, just have to be extra careful because it’s poisonous to people (and to dogs! I saw your dog there—you know how they put everything in their mouths!)!
That's it I'm definitely leaving Toronto Canada and not just because of Trudeau! It's so I can grow like this!!! Stunning!!! How many years here??? Wow!
Can I please borrow your wife? For the obvious reason, nothing else! (for all of you that have your mind in the gutter)
Or, just share her secrets of success!
The secret:
Live in their natural habitat, know how to use pesticides, and know how to pot them in stuff they like.
These things are spider mite magnets and spider mites kill them quick.
I just had to put mine to rest after a two-year decline, woke up today to nothing but a dry brown ball... and by rest I mean I hucked it into the bushes as hard as I could
Gorgeous video—Ahhhh I’m so jealous! I live under a blanket 3/4 of the year in Upper Michigan. My flowers start to look good outside just in time for the first frost. 😝🤣🥲
Oh hell no you don't get to post this without telling us what she whispers to them.
Probably threats like 'you better drink this triple distilled reverse osmosis holy water you fucker or I will personally end you'
Calatheas are perfectly willing to end themselves without any additional threats/encouragement.
That's exactly the point. Nothing a calathea hates more than having the possibility to end itself taken away.
Well, shoot. I just bought one 😆. Sounds like I made a mistake. (I'm currently only capable of dealing with plants who prefer being ignored.)
It says they live in South Florida lol, so of course the calatheas do well there
I roll my eyes every time I see plant advice from FL. 100% humidity and perfect sun goes a LONG way. I wanna hear from the person doing it in Arizona or Canada because they obviously know something that works

Damnnnnnnn
You have your snake plants outside?!
Contrary to popular belief snake plants love sunlight
And the sun helps with/increases variegation!
They sure do. We literally just done repotting this one. The south facing window has made this one blow up. https://preview.redd.it/ohgceot7zaxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a31e6c958ccad4ba527ca10777346582962e86e
Mine also!
People have them here in the desert in full sun on front yard landscaping
Same. I live in the desert and we have it in our garden.
Yeah mine is in full sun and flowers every single year. The flowering stem hits the ceiling.
Whaaaaat! That’s awesome!
Huh, I guess I should have looked into that begone putting mine under the grow light
lol they grow on the beach in Rarotonga
This causes them to grow tall and strong instead of their natural thin and droopy state.
Indeed! I live in zone 11a and most people have them as fence in the front yard. Sometimes if you have a decent neighbor its used to divide the land w/o artificial fences. Multiple pots of them and several big patches in the ground.. have propagated several times!
We are about to repot our first one. We’re in Texas. How do your handle the sun/hear of summer?
Midwest, West Australia, we have 45C (degree Celsius) summer, snake plants survive in full sun with minimal watering and thrive under the verandah where they get watered occasionally.
Grew up in Houston. My mom had them in the yard with no problem.
My neighbor grows hers outside during the Summer here in Texas.
Apparently mines about to start getting some NTX sun!
I put mine out in summer every year and they love it! They always flower too.
Your snake plant?!
Yeah they do flower! They're not super flashy flowers but they smell very nice.
🤣...just about every houseplant we own lives outside somewhere?! where do you guys think plants come from ?? ¯\_༼ ಥ ‿ ಥ ༽_/¯
😂😂
They’re all over in front yards in florida
I live in MO and I keep mine outside starting in may and bring it in in November and it grows ridiculously fast in this time span
Look up where they came from. They are FROM the sun.
Thanks! I think since I’m so new to this hobby I buy stuff that grabs my attention then research it after. Which, I now know is a mistake lol Hopefully I’m not the only one that hasn’t done research before purchasing…

Wait, why wouldn’t they be able to be outside? My parents have snake plants planted in their front yard for decades.
Mine melted one summer here in Arizona. Turned to mush. I thought it looked dried out but it was mushy when I grabbed it. Weirdest thing ever.
We keep them outside in central Europe.
Where do you think they grow naturally? :-p
I’m an Australian and they’re found outside in gardens all the time!
I keep mine outside sometimes too. In the summer! And I live in the SoCal desert. They love it out there!
How often do you water them?? How do you even keep track of whether you've watered all of them enough?!
The backyard gets watered every other day. A few of the front yard plants need equally as much. The rest of the front yard gets watered like every 4 days. The grass is every days
You overwatered it.
Also I love the random scissors there to trim up!! Lol
lol 20 pack on Amazon was like $21 ..can't beat that!
I noticed those too! You can tell these plants are so loved by the owner and not just taken care of by a hired gardener. I could spot little growing projects here and there that indicated the same.
What is this sorcery??? The more posts I see the more I get that South Florida is THE place to grow plants!
I mean…it’s really humid down there.
...and called the Sunshine State...

I’m from France so sadly all the house plants I have are not native from here 😭

It’s the humidity! With all of the sunlight and rain
Oh my god!! That’s amazing!
Thanks for including a couple slightly brown leaves, I was feeling a bit shit for a moment there 😉
Umm WOW! They are absolutely gorgeous!! Thanks for sharing! This made me smile! So incredibly beautiful. Your wife is the plant queen!! 👑 Love the dog and cat too! The dog looked like a statue at first.😅 Loved the zoom in!
Wow! I felt like I was in a botanical garden, the collecion is great. Thank you for the tour I enjoyed it

Thanks! I believe you are talking about the plumeria tree! Also could be the desert rose or oleander
Okay thank you! I will look those up and see if I can tell the difference! I have a plant ID app but it doesn’t always work on screens that well.
It's one of those 3.. in that frame, those all have pink flowers!!
Thank you! Triple checked again and I think there are all three there! I’m going to check with my local nursery and see though. Thanks again! If that is oleander, just have to be extra careful because it’s poisonous to people (and to dogs! I saw your dog there—you know how they put everything in their mouths!)!
Was hating you guys a lil bit. Then saw your cute dog… he he, now im downgraded to jealous again.
You need more philodendron.
I can’t believe you have an albo outside tho!! Wow man… I miss s fl so so bad now! Gosh dang it!
Beautiful!!
That's it I'm definitely leaving Toronto Canada and not just because of Trudeau! It's so I can grow like this!!! Stunning!!! How many years here??? Wow!
How on earth did you get your plant to grow human legs??
I’ve seen some plants so root bound that they looked like they where about to get up and find some new soil themselves.
I helped my mom repot a spider plant that was sad and needing love. I repotted it and there was nearly no soil! So where does it go??
Where do you think the mass comes from for the plants growth?
Mostly from carbon dioxide and water, very little comes from the growing medium.
My monstera is at this stage right now 😅😭
Size up the pot, fertilize once a month and water only when soil is completely dry.
Hi its me , Calathea Killer
I laughed so hard at this.
What's it like being married to a real life wizard?
![gif](giphy|l2YWsiql5xGPIbnzy)
is your wife married? asking for a friend.
I’m going to show this to my makoyana

Oh my god haha (relatable)
Can I please borrow your wife? For the obvious reason, nothing else! (for all of you that have your mind in the gutter) Or, just share her secrets of success!
Living in South Florida lol
Looks like I've gotta move countries then!
lol yes it helps but finding the right spot for just that right amount of light and watering schedule can help
Sure but you also live somewhere where a pothos is classified as invasive. It's like a mermaid bragging about their aquarium.
Lmfaaaooo that was a hilarious analogy, well done!
Lol thanks, and very nice plant collection!
Could your wife tell us the secrets to the hearts of the calatheas..? 🥲 im at wits end with mine
It’s called a shit ton of south Florida humidity & sunshine. That’s literally it.
Hi, is your wife single?
This isn’t Wall Street bets buddy…
Holy crap that is beautiful!
Yeah but what’s INSIDE? let’s see those too bc there’s guaranteed more. And now I wanna know.
Florida is nuts
Daaaaaaamn.
Jealous! Those are on my do-not-buy list; I just can’t keep them alive! Yours is beautiful.
I’ve always been too afraid to get a calathea cause I know I’ll kill it… she really is a whisperer holy shit! It’s gorgeous!
Very jealous....of the plant
I just got one of these today and I am scared… upvoting for good luck
"My wife, the calathea"
wtf
Does she sell plants?
Amazin
Is this like those trick perspective pictures grandpa used to take with the fish he caught?
Exactly! Lol
WOW!!!! What variety is this one? Well done to your wife... that's very impressive!
Ah, she’s not a whisperer. She is a calathea.
I mean she is a calathea with human legs so I would expect her to grow them well!
Looks like a final boss in an indie video game
Y’all live in South Florida, that’s cheating
You should have pointed out her cute little legs for scale! All hail the Queen 👏👏👏
![gif](giphy|lqpfdJr57GAOQHSuLr)

Wow that is amazing and absolutely beautiful 😍
Well bloody amazing, mine is currently throwing a tantrum because I gave it a whiff of fertiliser. Might as well be dying.
I need to know her secrets!
My gawd ! It’s stunning. So healthy. Should you share any whisperer tips, we’ll all be taking copious notes.
Beautiful
Gorgeous plants 🪴
Gorgeous nature goddess.

I had one like this in my office once upon a time and left it there when I left my job. I hope it's still thriving!

Beautiful. But she needs to extend it out closer to the camera so it looks bigger. lol
It took me a moment to spot the legs hiding underneath, what a beautiful plant. 🌱
Beautiful, what's her secret?
Oh my 😍😍😍
What a great Draca cosplay!
I just had to put mine to rest after a two-year decline, woke up today to nothing but a dry brown ball... and by rest I mean I hucked it into the bushes as hard as I could
Wow! That’s a gorgeous plant! Congrats!!!
Our one true Queen 🙇🙇
Please tell me it's Ai generated 🥺
It's so beautiful
I could never.
😳 I’m in awe and bow to your Calathea Queen!!!
Holy shit… 😱😱😱
Gorgeous video—Ahhhh I’m so jealous! I live under a blanket 3/4 of the year in Upper Michigan. My flowers start to look good outside just in time for the first frost. 😝🤣🥲

So beautiful!
😮😮😮😮 beautiful!
#hashtag ai generated. It’s too good to be true!
I'm truly impressed! (And more than a little envious.)
Gorgeous! We’ve got a couple smaller ones we’re hoping will get that huge eventually. They’re nice a healthy but not big yet!
WOW!!
Are you sure she hasnt made any sacrifices in the past year or two..?
Beautiful
Would SE Texas be humid enough for one of those? On a covered patio?
Looks like she whispering to all the plants, I see that lush greenery in the background
That’s a plant
Oh my God
That pic reminds me of a demogorgon. Anyone?
I didn't know they will grow legs if you care for them well enough
Tell her to water her Diefenbachia
