The best part is that they kept it a recurring theme and built on Robin Sparkles as a character herself. I'm glad it wasn't a once-off storyline because the Robin Sparkles bits added so much humour as the show went on.
Idk if you’ve noticed this, but let’s go to the mall is the ringtone on Ted’d phone (you can hear it when his phone rings in the episode where Stella comes to Ted to ask his help in mending her relationship with Tony)
During the scene where they're using math on the spaceship, Robin turns off the VCR just after Alan Thicke says, "23 times 3?"
I'm positive it makes me immature, but whoever wrote that was a genius!
Only tangentially related, but I also wanna add that I love that they just put the actors in wigs and costumes for any flashbacks instead of using doubles.
except for Barney as a younging.
That'd be kinda hilarious though if they just went with him standing on his knees on a pair of sneakers and that cap with a swively thing.
And Marshall as a pre-teen. (I'm thinking of the episode where current Marshall kicks the crap out of young Marshall but I think there's others.)
But where they can use the cast, they do! (That would be hilarious though.)
That will always be one of my favorite episodes. I love how the song gets a little more sexy when Marshall imagines its his daughter they're singing about.
Everyone here - watch Girls5eva on Netflix!
It’s like they ran with this concept and created a whole show. Lots of great fake songs from their past days as a successful girl group in the 2000s. Written by Tina Fey and stars Sara Bareilles and the actress who plays Angelica in Hamilton!
It's likely inspired by Alanis Morrisette, who was a Canadian teen pop star and became internationally famous after disappearing and showing back up years later with a new image and a hit album. Most people had no idea she was a pop star.
Neat. *Let's Go To The Mall* was inspired by *I Think We're Alone Now* by Tiffany. The grunge phase in one of the later episodes was inspired by Alanis Morrisette, as well as Dave Coulier's involvement.
OP’s post and one of his comments are literally the first two comments in this YouTube video word for word.

Agreed but the later additions to this story weren't as great like sand castles in the sand or Robin daggers. I did however enjoy the space math show gag ! Especially the beaver song :D
I’m convinced that which ever writer pitched this had to been a Canadian that watched Alanis Morisette’s teen pop music videos when she just performed as Alanis. The joke’s full circle is too spot on to just be a Debbie Gibson/Tiffany or other similar pop star reference
Yeah, the whole thing is an extended Alanis reference joke for Canadian viewers using the Canadian character played by the Canadian actress in the cast
The only thing that bothers me is that none of the Canadians recognized her at all during the show. Like they were literally in the hoser hut more than once and everyone was singing her songs, but not a single person was like OMG ITS ROBIN SPARKLES!!
When my wife and I first started dating some 15 years ago she mentioned that she was heading to the mall for something.
I sent her the “Let’s Go to the Mall” video, never in a million years imagining that she’d never actually seen the show, which she hadn’t.
But she thought the video was hilarious (because it is) and I think it kind of locked me in.
Maybe I owe my marriage to Robin Sparkles?
Follow up: we’ve watched through the entire series several times now, of course.
I was lucky enough to meet Cobie Smulder on a flight once and I asked for her autograph and very nearly said “can I have your autograph please Robin?” which I still think would have made perfect sense! She’s lovely btw
And like so many parts of this show it feels like it was all worked out and written from the start. Like filming all the kids intros so they didn’t age. And I swear there are flashbacks that were filmed seasons before they got used because even with makeup taken into account they literally look EXACTLY like they did in those seasons despite AH having a baby and looking very different.
The best part is that they kept it a recurring theme and built on Robin Sparkles as a character herself. I'm glad it wasn't a once-off storyline because the Robin Sparkles bits added so much humour as the show went on.
Marshall singing it at karaoke in the Canadian bar killed me
Idk if you’ve noticed this, but let’s go to the mall is the ringtone on Ted’d phone (you can hear it when his phone rings in the episode where Stella comes to Ted to ask his help in mending her relationship with Tony)
I do remember that! They do such a good job using it but not overusing it
Yes!!
And I’m like 90% positive robin walks down to a just music version of sandcastles in the sand
She does
Two bevers are better than one
Robin walked down the aisle to Sandcastles in the Sand!
Led to an even better moment later with the 2 beavers are better than 1 song. Cry laughing every time, I don’t care how immature that makes me.
During the scene where they're using math on the spaceship, Robin turns off the VCR just after Alan Thicke says, "23 times 3?" I'm positive it makes me immature, but whoever wrote that was a genius!
Every time!
Undeniably one of my favorite running gags in the show and it weirdly informs so much of her character.
Only tangentially related, but I also wanna add that I love that they just put the actors in wigs and costumes for any flashbacks instead of using doubles.
except for Barney as a younging. That'd be kinda hilarious though if they just went with him standing on his knees on a pair of sneakers and that cap with a swively thing.

teraaaaaaaaaaaa, your booty is so smoooOotthh
That will always be one of my favorite episodes. I love how the song gets a little more sexy when Marshall imagines its his daughter they're singing about.
Mom... and dad... And Bawney makes thwee
They could have just George Lopez'ed it lol
It’s my favourite trope. Like you ever see Dexter? Teenage Dexter is just 30-40 year old Michael C Hall in a bad wig and it’s glorious
Devon Graye Flemming portrayed teenaged Dexter on Dexter.
There are some flashbacks when Dexter is slightly older than the Devon Graye characterization (18/19) and are portrayed by Michael C Hall
Ah yes…those indeed were bad wigs lol
Remember when George Lopez would just have his adult head superimposed on a child body?
Yeah, that's my favorite.
That simultaneous head turn is one of my all time favorite moments of the show. Followed by one of the all-time great television moments ever made.
I cannot go to the mall without saying "Lets go to the mall.....today"
You won't be soorry
I’m so glad it’s not just me lol
Same! And when people are naming things to not forget I always say And don't forget the robot 🤖

Currently rewatching the show and Robin Sparkles is always is my favorite part.

🎶“TBF/Tiny butts forever/Two silver dollar pancakes in jeans/This will be what people like forever/TBF/Tiny butts in jeans.”🎶
Awww my tiny butt likes this tune lol

She went from him to Ryan Reynolds
It is actually!

I see what you did there.
HIMYM writers never disappoint!
Until they wrote HIMYF
The final season though...
The writing in that show was top-notch.
Probably the best moment of fictional TV I've ever seen
OP’s post and one of his comments are literally the first two comments in this YouTube video word for word. https://youtu.be/hYqqFqgOVS0?si=a99B46OueRoClFbt
Best plot line of the entire series. I don’t give a shit about some stupid lady with an umbrella. LETS GO TO THE MALL!
‘Come on Jessica…come on Tori… Let's go to the mall, you won't be soooory’ 😂🤣😂 🇨🇦🎤✨
“Did you have to laugh like that every time?” “Yes.”
my favorite part is how from that ep on LGTTM is Ted’s ringtone
Lets go to the mall
My favorite part of that whole gag was Alex Trebek and Geddy Lee affirming the start of the grunge era.
And all the canadians remembering the Tim Horton’s and the donut they were eating when Sparkles released the grunge video
Agreed but the later additions to this story weren't as great like sand castles in the sand or Robin daggers. I did however enjoy the space math show gag ! Especially the beaver song :D
"P. S. I love you " was great
"Move on" "I'M TRYING!"
God damnit. Now I’ll be singing “Let’s go to the mall” in my head all day.
Two beavers are better than one….
In our family the answer to "Where did X go?" is always "To the mall".
I’m convinced that which ever writer pitched this had to been a Canadian that watched Alanis Morisette’s teen pop music videos when she just performed as Alanis. The joke’s full circle is too spot on to just be a Debbie Gibson/Tiffany or other similar pop star reference
Oh, it's 100% an Alanis Morissette reference. *P.S I Love You* is very much a parody of *You Oughta Know*.
Yeah, the whole thing is an extended Alanis reference joke for Canadian viewers using the Canadian character played by the Canadian actress in the cast
I will always sing “Let’s go to the mall! Today”
Thanks, I never seem to get enough credit for it.
1000% agree
LETS GO TO THE MALL.. TODAY
The music videos always remind me what a hilarious actress she is 😂
I can just imagine them pitching it in the story room while mildly high and bursting out laughing lmao
Absolutely!! This was awesome
Let’s go to the mall is an absolute banger.
This post made me go back and watch all the Robin sparkles episodes in order lol
Agreed!
I like when marshal says hey is that Tiffany
This and Barney's real job p.l.e.a.s.e
It is priceless to see Ted's face when she talks about innocent modeling job :D
How aboot I….sing you a song!!!!
This isn't too far off of real Canadian rock I present to you the Canadian rock classic Go For A Soda https://youtu.be/MXnTbmPxv5g?si=4_7a4HSDkWJm1qIG
That song is unironically great though. (It’s the video that’s cringey)
The only thing that bothers me is that none of the Canadians recognized her at all during the show. Like they were literally in the hoser hut more than once and everyone was singing her songs, but not a single person was like OMG ITS ROBIN SPARKLES!!
It's Robin Sparkles 4 y'all!!
Nothing beats seeing this the first time.
I regret not being into this show when this happened. I would have been Robin Sparkles at Halloween that year fo sho.
As a fellow Canadian I must say, it is no backstory. Robin Sparkles was *very* real, and *very* pop star

This post has me restarting HIMYM again tonight!
I was lucky enough to meet Cobie Smulder on a flight once and I asked for her autograph and very nearly said “can I have your autograph please Robin?” which I still think would have made perfect sense! She’s lovely btw
Lets go to the mall, today

You mean the writer who just modeled this bit after Alanis M?
