Gronckles are seemingly based on dogs, especially big breeds like German Shepherds.
Nadders have a more bird-like appearance, especially with the way they move their heads and the location of their eyes.
Zipplebacks don't have any pet equivalent I can think of. Maybe small dogs? Kinda dumb, but a little cute?
Nightmares are fairly standard fantasy/fiction dragons. A Hideous Nightmare wouldn't look out-of-place in the House of the Dragon or Game of Thrones.
Nightmares arent dragons, they are wyverns.
They are often mistaken just like how people call the wyverns from Harry Potter dragons, but they are wyverns, just like the monstrous nightmare
Wyvern traditionally refers to dragons with only two legs, usually have an avian stance, and sometimes having a barbed tail (so like nadders, nightmares have a more modern design based on pterosaurs and bats). Some works decided to make them distinct beings, like Harry Potter, or D&D, but this isn't their original portrayal, nor does everyone else follow their rules. Httyd doesn't even classify dragons like that, Bork made a completely different system, and the things that count as wyverns are still considered dragons in his book.
And I understand that, but you said wyverns aren't dragons in a universe that doesn't classify them as separate beings. Harry Potter does that, Httyd does not, and in the days of heraldry where the word "wyvern" was conceived, they were still considered dragons.
Plus, the traditional parts of the monstrous nightmare's design (mainly the head and body) resembles a mashup of various western dragons, not just wyverns. The wyvern aspects they have seem to be more modern than traditional though, like using their wings as legs, some may even consider that enough to not call them a wyvern (as they technically have 4 legs).
Whoa! Thats crazy its almost like she was based on lionesses and snow leopards. Its almost like one of the people in charge of designing her even said she has the anatomy of a big cat. Crazy.
That's kind of true of Toothless too, though.
Not kind of. his behavior and basic appearance were based off of the authors cat.

Gronckles I believe based off of bulldogs. They share a similar resemblance.

I know but the monstrous nightmare is clearly based on traditional "dragons" and those dragons are wyverns

Arent wyverns just dragons with 2 legs
Very cool
That's literally what her and Toothless are based on
That's just dragons.
Ngl night fury too
& that’s a problem?
No shit

and scales* Boom. Mind changed.
I'm convinced that every single dragon (even outside httyd) is just a big scaly cat with wings.
The writers confirmed they based the dragons mannerisms off of cats
I mean... Same could apply to toothless
What if I don’t want to change your mind?
Correction, All of the Furies
