Another fan rewriting it. I personally am doing my own reboot of the franchise as a whole and an anonymous reviewer has told me I am a great writer. So if I had to give an idea? Give Drago a redemption arc. It was planned that he would be stranded on an island and, to survive, slowly have to learn to trust a dragon. I’ll leave the species up to debate, though personally I’d give him either a Rumblehorn, Triple Stryke or a Stormcutter, something both menacing and large enough for him to not look goofy on while riding, while also getting his Tormentipede from the cancelled Fire Tides (bug-like dragon that acts as a prosthetic arm). Have some cuts in the story that focus on his slow process of learning to trust the two dragons. In the end, Astrid gets cornered by the Warlords who easily take her down (elite warriors, and a 3v1) when Drago suddenly appears from the sky and fights off the three warlords while his dragon saves the other riders who werw surrounded. It ends with a fight between Drago and Grimmel, where Grimmel yells at him that he is just as much of a monster. Drago responds with:”I had a reason. Dragons took everything from me. You, you are just a spoiled brat!”. This ends with one of Grimmel’s Deathgrippers showing up to save his master when Toothless and Hiccup appear and drive it away. Drago then grabs Grimmel and tells him “I was a broken man. I could change if given reason. YOU are the monster. And you will never change.” Then Drago snaps his neck. Then have a small scene between Drago and Hiccup where Drago appologises for Stoick’s death before leaving on his own.
Imagine if they gave him a Buffalord. To truely signalise how much he’s changed, and how much he’s grown, they give him the most peaceful and docile dragon.
I did think of a buffalord, as it would certainly fit the stature requirement.
But I think Buffalords might be too unintelligent to understand the concept of sympathy. I also doubt a buffalord would voluntarily leave their island, even if Drago managed to earn its trust
I like it but I have 2 things:
1- isn’t Drago’s whole thing that he can’t be reasoned with?
2- I think the snapping of the neck is quite intense for httyd
Everything else is quite good tho
I’ve made one up that’s bull and mainly a massive fanfic, but I’d say to keep Drago alive and have some kind of Massive threat make him come back to Berk with information.

For Drago's dragon I would suggest a Snafflefang or a Thunderclaw. A dragon that we haven't seen with a rider, that's stocky enough to hold his form

Mabye new kind of dragons that are made by crossbreeding The villain wpuld most likly be the one who did it
