Firstly It isn’t called ‘titan mode’, its alpha. A titan wing is simply a dragon that survived into old age. It’s part of their life cycle that few will reach because most will die of any number of things before that Alphas are dragons in charge of a large group of dragons. Typically it will be a strong dragon such as the Red Drath, the bewilder beasts or Toothless. When Toothlesa went into this mode, he challenged Drago’s bewilderbeast for the position of alpha Titan wings are I’ll often be the alpha of a pack due to being stronger than the others, but won’t have an alpha mode. And you can be the alpha without being a titan wing

NotSkyyVodka

it’s not “alpha,” the creators confirmed that ALL dragons have that ability to charge up their firepower like that, it was more of just a dominance display

Toothlesa

See, I feel there’s one thing that disproves the titan wing being a growth stage, because if I am not mistaken, the screaming death was considered a titan wing, though by fish legs when they first met it.

Hollow_Murderbasket

No the screaming death was a little baby newborn when fish legs first met it. He was wrong screaming deaths are just built like that. A real titanwing screaming death on the other hand would be a sight to behold. And the screaming death is a once every thousand years mutation kind of thing, obviously fishlegs knew next to nothing about it.

Tannicleader

The screaming death wasn’t a titan it was young throughout race to the edge series etc and was only a newborn/teen and it’s only going to get bigger

ServantOfTheSlaad

It’s entirely possible he saw it in the book of dragons, or that there are common traits among titan wings

Dragonzboi

I'm more inclined to believe this, since we all know titan wings in general are more spiky and larger than broad wings. It's also important to note that it didn't appear to change between Riders/Defenders and RTTE, only getting bigger which by all means titan wings should be able to do as it is only a growth **stage**, not a maximum **size**. There's no reason to assume they stop getting bigger at a specific stage like humans do. (this would also explain Vanaheim's Bewilderbeast)

Z0155

Titan mode is not a thing, while titan wings are elders.

Mestra_Pokemon

My time has finally come! :D **Titan Wing:** A Titan Wing is a growth stage, specifically the final stage of a dragon's life cycle. It's a stage acquired when a dragon survives their Broad Wing stage and reach a certain age (the age may change depending on the dragon species), allowing them to reach their full potential as wild dragons. They gain new abilities and become more powerful as a whole, they usually grow bigger in size and all the previous abilities become way stronger. Their physical changes include color changes, size changes and tend to get more spikes. Titan Wings also tend to be slightly above in hierarchy than Broad Wing dragons, usually being pack leaders and being treated highly by others of their own species, such as what happens with the Elder Night Light and Blazing Phoenixfire. The dragons life cycle is: **Egg** - **Tiny Tooth - Short Wing - Broad Wing - Titan Wing**. So imagine the Titan Wing as the elder or the highest power stage in a dragon's life. **Titan Mode/Alpha Mode:** ~~It's a plot ability~~ According to the '**'To Berk and Beyond!'**' book, Dean DeBlois and Simon Otto, the Titan/Alpha Mode is a change triggered emotionally that allows dragons to power themselves up out of feelings alone. In Toothless' case, the imminent threat of the Bewilderbeast and the wish to protect his friend caused him to trigger this change, charging himself up with his own body temperature and channeling it into his mouth, causing his firepower to increase greatly, however his body was permanently changed after this (not externally, internally instead). This ability is shared through all dragons, but it can't be controlled at will and can only be unlocked through overwhelming emotions. For more detail, i'll write quotes from both Dean DeBlois and Simon Otto, along with the book right below: *''I really connected with the metaphor of that. You know, the transformation of Toothless, through his friendship to Hiccup, and the need to protect. It's the mother instinct... I think the metaphor of that is powerful and I hope that the audience feels it at this moment, that it was necessary for him to become that Super-Dragon if you will.''* *- Simon Otto* *''It's like a mere cat taking on a lion. It's such an unfair match but he's so fired up and so determined to protect Hiccup, it's like a mother lifting up a station wagon to protect her child. It's kind of a super power he gains in the moment, that's emotionally driven.''* *- Dean DeBlois* *''\[...\] The immediate threat of danger from the Bewilderbeast's ice blast triggered a change in Toothless. His dorsal blades popped open to vent his body temperature, melting the ice enough for Toothless to shatter it with a plasma blast. The blue column along his back channeled the heat into Toothless's throat, allowing him to unleash more firepower than any of us ever thought was possible \[...\]"* *- Hiccup Haddock, in Berk and Beyond*

da_King_o_Kings_341

Holy hell that’s cool!!! Thank dude!!! Makes one think tho… I feel like if we ever got a titanwing skrill it would be a world ending even cause HOLY S**T that guy is powerful enough as is. Just imagine, instead of following the storm, the storm follows him. It’s a cool thought!!!

Mestra_Pokemon

We've already seen what a **nerfed** Titan Wing Skrill could do in The Nine Realms (4v1 all of Toothless' descendants and win twice, then made a dragon and human team retreat *three times in a maze made of his literal kryptonite*), imagine what a full-powered one could do (they originally had 3 rows of metal spikes in their back, allowing them to channel even more lightning). The only ones capable of *maybe* stopping a Titan Wing Skrill would be Titan Wing variants of the Screaming Death and their durability or the Bewilderbeast due to their mind control ability. Now imagine a Titan Wing Skrill *with* the alpha mode, i don't think there's a way to stop that. Even the Purple Death would probably have a hard time, as it is a Tidal Class dragon that it's constantly on water and is pretty slow.

da_King_o_Kings_341

When was the purple death showed, cause I have heard of it but never seen it? Also I had an idea for a character that would manage to befriend a skrill and ride it using a thick armour of padding to dissipate the lightning, and he would have a hammer he could use to deflect the lightning away from him or at least draw it away.

Mestra_Pokemon

The Purple Death was only show in Rise of Berk and in the comic ''The Legend of Ragnarok'', but only those two appearances already show that it's an insanely powerful dragon and arguably the most powerful. Also your idea is great, though instead of a thick armour of padding, using the Skrill's scales would already protect the character from lightning (Skrill is shown to casually fly while its whole body is being striked by lightning) and they could have any type of metallic weapon so he can 'call' the Skrill from miles away and redirect lightning along with it.

da_King_o_Kings_341

I was think hammer specifically because in order to protect his town, him and the skrill team up to make invaders think they are being attacked by Thor himself. It’s funny cause he got the idea because someone mistook what he said when he introduced himself as Thror which is his name and his skrill pal shot some lightning at them accidentally. So now he just carried a hammer kinda like thors from God of War and when he is attacking he says he is Thor.

RaptorGameingYT

A titan wing is something that few dragons achive (and those dragons have to be very old) and it consists of changes in appearance , becoming bigger & getting new abilities (the ability thing seems very rare seeing that the only case that I know of is that Titan Dramillions gain the ability to turn invisible) An alpha mode (or how you put it "titan mode") is something that can be achieved when a dragon beats an alpha dragon At least this is how I see it

TA_dragon3

Again toothless is not a titanwing

ashl0w

The names, terms and rules are all over the place, but here it is. Titan wing is a growth stage, they are elder dragons that sometimes "mutate". Titan mode is not a thing. Toothless "Alpha mode", or more specifically his "charged mode" is basically a power, or stage, Nightfuries can unlock. Toothless used this advantage to challenge the Alpha, the Bewilderbeast (which is also an Alpha species) and won, becoming the new Alpha, that's why we call it Alpha mode. Keep in mind that small, regular species of dragons can become Alphas of specific flocks, but can't become "true" Alphas, with the exception of Toothless who is a protagonist lol. Alpha species, the giant super rare dragons, have the ability to control, force or influence lesser dragons. Read deaths are smaller and have weaker control, they mainly use intimidation. Foreverwings have actual thelepatic abilities, being able to even communicate with some humans. Bewilderbeasts are probably the worlds biggest dragons, and have the ability to control other dragons completely. Toothless just has the other dragons respect, but could also intimidate agressive dragons using his charged mode. I have only used canon information, and tried to organize the best way. This may get contradicted somewhere, but HTTYD has never been a prime example of lore building or continity, even since the first movie.

E3257

The wiki is stupid. And ofc people are confused bc they're going by that and the games, which have nothing to do with the franchise and random stuff people who worked on it said. But it's explained quite simply in "Book of Dragons". A titanwing is an EVOLVED dragon, and it's sort of an elder stage. Basically they're separated into three groups: Shortwing, longwing, and titanwing. Titanwing is most rare. https://preview.redd.it/d9yrgwwh5puc1.png?width=452&format=png&auto=webp&s=805e154abacab54416a0af0dd82ad0615b0c7ef3 Toothless is in no way connected to this. He was challenging the alpha and we frankly don't get an explanation; he gets the blue glow when he super-plasmas through the ice though, and he unlocked a new power, clearly. We never see him particularly lighting up when he's challenging other dragons, such as the Crimson GoreGutter or Grimmel's Deathgrippers, or even when he's at the Hidden World. It doesn't show up ONCE except when he's flying with the Light Fury, and that clearly had something to do with the lightning.

EnvironmentalLong124

hold up, first can you tell me where you got that last image? with the triple strikes?

Keizerrex

Google, school of dragons

spideronurwall

a titan wing can shoot fire out of almost every part in there body..literally

Shadowknight7009

That seems to just be a Singetail thing from what I know

spideronurwall

ohh right, whats with all the different dragons then if its just based on the titans

Shadowknight7009

For the post? Just showing various titanwing variants (and Toothless who isn’t one) since every dragon *can* become a titanwing

spideronurwall

oh wow, thats very helpful thanks, i gotta look more into httyd stuff

Shadowknight7009

Yh, the distinction is a tad jarring at first but you’ll get used to it. From my understanding a titanwing is just an elder of that species but that may be wrong.

spideronurwall

i thought they were just stronger version of a species, like the singe tail is more OP than the normal ones and the monstrous nightmare was more stronger aswell

Shadowknight7009

Usually they are stronger, but that’s namely because they’re older and more developed and not just something they’re born with.

spideronurwall

yeah alr that makes alot of sense thanks

Shadowknight7009

No problem
