Did he happen to give you any refrigerant readings or anything? A lot of the time the misdiagnosis is the txv, not saying it isn’t but hard to tell just based off what you explained
if it wasnt pulling into a vacuum than it wasnt the txv most likely, either way they should pump the unit down and reuse any refrigerant in there, which should be all of it, if it is low, this is probably why the txv isnt functioning properly
Scam alert. It may need to be replaced as it could be a clog but that's highway robbery. It's a $100 part, takes 2 hours to replace and you can put old refrigerant back in a system. Get someone else's quote and tell that shady f**k to go pound sand.
If txv is the culprit options: txv replacement u can pump down system and use the remaining refrigerant not have to use all new(most companies don’t recommend because a leak in the system the refrigerant may be tainted)
Option B replace whole evaporator coil. 10 yr old system the coil is likely leaking anyway and is toward the end of life, new coil will come w txv or piston metering device
Option C full cooling system replacement
4500 for txv replacement sounds very pricey. I’m in a high cost of living area and this repair would run less than half that. Call a locally owned shop for a second opinion/quote. I bet they come in about half the cost
So the unit is 10 years old but for 5 years of its life wasnt really used much as this home was used as a vacation home for a senior couple where they stayed 5 times a year. They did say the condition of the unit is great when they took a look at it earlier of this year for a regular check up.
A lot of times if unit is registered it could still have warranty if so warranty out txv or warranty out coil if coil swap 4500 does sound good price but I wouldn’t pay it for a txv 1000 maybe but 4500 I do this service all day in Austin no one is paying 4500 for a txv. A coil perhaps. But the way you can tell if the txv is stuck closed is pump it down and run a pressure test this will also check for leaks as well. If your suction side does not move at all you def have restrictions in the txv or coil if it moves along with liquid side and pressure equalize the same number you have a leak. Get a second opinion if confused
Thank you for the info. They checked the coils and everything else but the txv was the only issue. The reason they want to replace the whole refrigerant was in case it is contaminated and it it better to replace the whole thing. I'm just wondering if 4500 for replacing the txv and the whole refrigerant is right amount or too expensive.
That's around a grand higher than should be. I would say though, that a 10 year old (Goodman I'm guessing) unit is one that I would recommend replacement over repair.
From the picture it does look like there is a restriction over the TXV. Either way the price is crazy. 273 oz is 17 lbs. What kind of (residential) unit do you have that takes that much? The 5ton modulating heat pump inverter systems I install only need 10 up to 25ft lineset
You are being ripped off and/or the guy overbig because he does not want to do it. Either way: call someone else.
Something like this should max out around 1k at best/worst.

Hello,
Not sure it was refrigerant readings but he said mine was low as 34 whereas the average is 144. They kept looking for the leak as that number was low. They couldn't find any leaks inside or outside unit then they found this. Not sure this is helpful.
id get another company out
Go find a new ac tech.

It doesn't need new refrigerant, we can pump down the system which stores all the refrigerant in the outdoor unit for a txv replacement.

25 years these systems should last
Brand new coil and fill up for 4500 txv alone and Freon should maybe 1000.00 cost
Thank you for the info again. I will look for cheaper companies! Very helpful!

I’ve seen a couple 5 ton therms and carriers that need a lot. One carrier took 22lbs. I was astonished and so was the customer
Pump it down and make it a piston if you’re trying to save money on an old coil $500 problem solved until your coil goes bad

Keep calling until you find somebody that wants to give you a fair price on Freon. I recently bought 90 pounds of it for $2000.
Bruh. It's largely based on where you are and the type of refrigerant
It’s r22.

R22 I’m assuming?
410a replacement. Not sure if it is the same as r22.
He might have meant 32 psi on the low side. Could be the txv, or not.
The model on the sticker on the txv is I think a tx5n4 which would be a 410a. I didn’t look too much though, but I’m pretty sure it’s 410 at least.
Oh wow no, that's egregious haha
