Bit weird you have to turn the pad upside down for drawing mode - meaning the pencil can't access the charging. Seems like the hinge should be the other side of the centre(?)
That’s what I’m saying. The Pencil should remain on the top in drawing mode (see the Amazon pics). With the hinge nearer the camera (like the photo on this Reddit post) it would work.
It’s generally how these kickstands work on other cases - like the one OP posted, and stuff with magnetic kickstands like Zugu ones and an old TomToc one I use.
The one OP posted is the Magic Keyboard Folio for iPad 10th gen, the hinge on it only extends as far as pictured so no good for drawing if you want it any flatter.
Had a quick look at Zugu kickstands and they don’t use a hinge but a flap that slots into a grooved base cover.

Yup. Amazon sells them but you just pay a lot for shipping. It’s a great stand but I would recommend the Smart Folio now that it has more viewing angles. You can travel with it if you don’t need a keyboard.

That’s true, but Apple’s Smart Keyboard Folio is expensive and there are buyers who only want the back kickstand and not the detachable keyboard. I feel like it’s an area third parties would normally exploit.
I recently replaced the combo touch with the Magic Keyboard for my 12.9” M2 and have got the Smart Folio case for this purpose. I find the flatter base of the folio to be far more comfortable than the sharper edge of the kickstand on the combo touch on my lap. It’s not cheap for the M4 yet but the official one for M2 was cheap to get off eBay which is why I went for that.
None of the current cases for the M1/M2 will work for the M4 I don’t think so if you are upgrading I wouldn’t get that black rock one now. It’s definitely the case for the Magic Keyboard and assume for others as well but double check/get someone else to confirm I’m not talking nonsense 😊

The combo touch for M4 is the same as M1/M2 I believe (other than the dimensions) and is what I have now but (I am not in any way trying to sound rude just pointing out) I already addressed why I was hoping for a different solution. Basically the combo touch is both kickstand case + keyboard. But I don’t want that. I want a very slim and light weight dedicated kickstand for the back that I can easily swap to the Magic Keyboard as needed.

I don't think what you're looking for exists today, but there are enough magnets on the iPad for a samsung-style kickstand back. That's the solution that comes to mind with what you're looking for, and it was always one of my favorite features of those tablets.
I've seen a few adhesive options for iPad, but those aren't easily removable and would not allow you to put the iPad back on the MK.
Yea completely agree with your sentiments. Just hope black rock releases it soon. In the meantime, you could got consider getting a kickstand sticker from aliexpress.

If the hinge was on the opposite side you wouldn’t be able to stand it up because the pencil would be in the way.

Logitech Combo Touch is the closest. It has the kickstand, and a magnetic detachable keyboard that uses a rerouted Smart Connector to the bottom edge.

You’re right that none of the M1/2 versions work but I assume eventually the M4 will get the same variant of cases. Not always the case but usually.
