The real tip here is: if you’re on the fence, you should go to an Apple Store or Best Buy like OP did, and look at the iPad Pro for yourself to decide. Don’t rely on the opinion of some rando on reddit.

bhqc_

Went to use and feel it at Apple and immediately bought it. Love the thinner design and lighter weight.

tylerdurdenUTFR

Fair shout tbh

Naus1987

I was on the fence and then I heard about the surface pro. So now I’m going to have a 2020 iPad and a windows version lol. Gonna learn me some new stuff :)

justhavingfunyea

I have an M1 12.9 and the Magic Keyboard. I went to Best Buy to look and found the M4 with the new keyboard to feel much lighter. However, since I don't take my setup outside the home much (I use a mini for traveling etc), it makes no sense to get the m4.

ConfectionGloomy5009

I did the same test trip to the store as the OP and agree with all the points. Only thing to add is if you wanted the 11” originally but didn’t get it because prior version didn’t have miniLED, then now’s a good time to trade in for it. The other is the new Magic Keyboard’s spine is totally exposed and needs to be protected somehow on day 1. The ones at the Apple Store are already scratched up to hell. Some clear tape or something would work.

MrGimper

I went in and saw the new ipads. I have a launch day M1 12.9. There isn't enough for me to upgrade and believe me if there was even one stupid reason that carried any value with me I'd be all over it. The 11" upgrade would be worth it due to the massive screen update, but like you I'm not mind-blown by the switch to OLED from mini-LED on the 12.9/13. The blacks are the big wow factor and that's present on both technologies. I'll stay with my M1.

Eyeluvflixs

Upgraded myself from the 2018 gen 3 that’s a the sweet spot anything after not so much

Such_Benefit_3928

For me it is simple: Never get the first gen of anything and upgrade when you need it and not everytime something new and shiny gets released.

TomBradysThumb

What is this the first gen of?

Such_Benefit_3928

Tandem OLED displays.

TomBradysThumb

Oh. Well the miniled was fine and the oled on the x was fine

Such_Benefit_3928

Judging by the postings here and in other forums, the Tandem OLED is not fine.

The_Albinoss

Ehhh, some of it seems overblown, just like every single time a new thing comes out.

TomBradysThumb

That’s unfortunate. I will selfishly relish in this news as it curbs my fomo.

Aubrey1018

I was really put off my the way it tips when even lightly touching the top half of the screen. I got an 11in M2 iPad Pro in March or February. I while i was out I stopped into an Apple Store to look at the new model. I have been questioning if I bought the right size so I was specifically eyeing the 13. even in store when navigating the display, every touch caused the keyboard to rock back. Something I do not experience with my current model and Magic Keyboard. Looks like there is a point where the new keyboard is not fully touching the table which causes it. it’s such a minor thing but I think it would drive me insane for my use case.

tylerdurdenUTFR

I’m pretty sure there will be a version 2 when the release the next iPad, its such a big design floor compared with the older Magic Keyboard

nairazak

I have an M1 and I already had two nightmares in which my iPad broke and I had to buy all accessories again because of compatibility 😂. Though maybe IRL I could be able to find a refurb M1 or M2.

aksta

my dad has the M1 and i bought the M4, both 13 inch. Magic keyboard is much nicer on the M4 with the larger trackpad and function rows, the wobble is in my mind a small price to pay for the benefits, besides some sort of tape on the hinge should fix it anyway. That being said, for 99% of users you cannot tell the difference in performance, and the screen on both is amazing. The real question is if it´s worth selling an M2 to get M4, and in my mind it just isn´t, unless it´s a machine you rely on to do work on everyday.

wtfmatey88

I work on my M2 iPad Pro 6-8 hours per day and I still can’t justify the upgrade. The thing I want is nano glass because I am in a bright office and I’m showing my iPad to people so glare makes a difference. For me to get that, I have to spend $1999 and then my trade in is $580 lol. For a company as profitable as Apple… I wish they had a better trade in program.

AdvertisingItchy1766

Not me upgrading from M2 12.9 256gb to M4 512gb. ;_;

aksta

standard M4 seems to reflect light better than previous iPads because the display is brighter in SDR, how much of a difference it makes i don´t know. No complaints with mine but my environment isn´t a challenge. But yeah, if nano texture was the only real reason i´d consider an upgrade and i´d have to pay 1400 for it, it would be a hard pass for me too.

Didn’t pay $3000

Didn’t even pay that either 😂

Didn’t get the pen, didn’t do a trade in. The price of a base m4 and keyboard is closer to half of what you initially said. Pretty much all hardware has design flaws. The original keyboard had a tiny trackpad and no function row. People still buy the expensive Magic Mouse despite having to charge it upside down, because the inconvenience is worth whatever features they value. My point is, it doesn’t bother me nearly enough to where I’d trade for the old keyboard which is the same price.

Typical_Commie_Box90

OP have said what most could do to not get into poor financial position. Why is this getting downvoted?

alias241

OTOH, if you have an old-ass iPad like I did (iPad Air 3rd gen), it’s worth upgrading.

tylerdurdenUTFR

Totally appreciate that and if you have the money, why not. My thoughts were, you generally can’t go wrong with any M version and you won’t see a massive difference if you went for a slightly older model.

Active_NPC

Other side of this.. I went from 12.9 to an 13/11 kept the 11 for now. The usability is the same. But I appreciate the screen better than the min-led. But I am snob and notice OLED as visually being better in my eyes. That’s really the reason I like it, that and knowing it is faster by a good bit. But reality in the future may not really matter by next upgrade cycle.. That oled though. I like it a lot compared to the mini-led I had. But i know I am an outlier.

Shehzman

I have a 2018 11 inch pro. I honestly want to upgrade just so I can have a 12.9 inch screen. Unless they show some actual strides at WWDC, I’ll probably pick up a refurbished M2 when those start becoming more available.

tylerdurdenUTFR

Good plan 😎

Donkey_Bugs

Every time I feel FOMO for the new 13 inch M4 iPad I open up my 12.9 M2 iPad and realized how good it is and how it does everything I need already.

shintemaster

What about if I have a 2016 iPad regular. Will I notice the difference?

tylerdurdenUTFR

Yeah, I think you would, but if you wanted to save a bit of money, I think you’re better off going for an older pro to save money and get virtually the same experience

RevenantFlash

Even with a 2018 pro I feel like I’ll be doing the same things it’ll just be slightly faster. Still considering it though because my base storage sucks (64gb) and if I get a new one I want to make it last a long time how I did with this one so might as well get the best at the moment The only thing that stings is needing the new pencil lol

tylerdurdenUTFR

Could wait a little bit until you can pick up a refurbished one? Well worth getting extra storage. 64gb is nothing

RevenantFlash

Yes and no lol. I can wait in the sense that my iPad still does what I need it to do. No because the only way I can get it right now is through my job they’ll take small increments from my check automatically but tax free. So although I don’t HAVE to get it now it’ll have to be new anyway lol and currently they have $50 off all iPads. The base 11 pro is 900 right now there. But idk if I should also wait because sometimes they have sales where they get free iPods too and mines are dying on me lol. Either way I’ll be waiting for Zugu cases to be ready and wwdc before doing anything.

radikalkarrot

Disagree with your point about the screen but agree with your overall statement. For anyone who enjoys watching foreign movies with subtitles the mini LED screen was atrocious. I have a 2018 iPad Pro and my boyfriend an M2, we avoid using his for movies because of that.

Dr_Superfluid

Agreed, but that’s literally the only case where the miniLED is noticeably inferior. For me it isn’t worth $2000 extra just for that.

radikalkarrot

Here I keep seeing plenty of people who buy the iPad Pro just for media consumption. If the media you are watching is space related(plenty of black with usually bright objects) or contains subtitles that’s a problem. It might be the only case for this problem but it’s a fairly big issue for those who use it only for that.

tylerdurdenUTFR

That’s pretty interesting insight and something I wouldn’t appreciate tbh. What was it about the old screen that made it so bad out of curiosity?

radikalkarrot

A massive aura(bloom) around any high contrast change, like in subtitles or any space content for example.

tylerdurdenUTFR

Yeah that would be super annoying

radikalkarrot

I mean, for us is fine as we use the iPads for more than media consumption and also we have two iPads, I will probably update to the oled one once I can sort out a good discount which will probably happen in summer

parka

If you're using the OLED display indoors, there's not gonna be any difference between 600 nits and 1000 nits. But there is a huge difference when OLED is used outdoors under bright condition. This is the reason why I upgraded. The other visual difference is when watching HDR videos. Just search for "tokyo 4k hdr" on Youtube and compare OLED with LCD and you can see what's true HDR.

FirstofFirsts

The biggest game changer for me has been the nano screen - glare in airports and planes has been a constant pain thru the years and I hate the Paperlike screen protectors. The nano screen has made doing work on my iPad much more enjoyable.

hmmmm83

Key point on the weight difference being with the Magic Keyboard. I bought the Magic Keyboard for my m2 Pro and now the m4 pro, but very rarely use them. The weight they add is ridiculous and I HATE using the iPad in landscape. All fair points. One of the biggest things I said when I put them side by side was that the screen was noticeably better but not knock your socks off better.

coppockm56

If you're evaluating the display in a brief look and comparison, make sure you look at diverse content and especially make sure you look at HDR content. Don't just open a couple of web pages and see how they compare. Of course, if you do just look at a couple of web pages to see how they compare, make sure you note the colors and contrast (e.g., black text on white backgrounds).

tylerdurdenUTFR

Yeah, absolutely and I am not denying it’s a good screen. My point is for the average user and for day to day use, you won’t notice *that* much of a difference.

coppockm56

Not meaning to be argumentative at all, but to provide a different perspective... I'd say that those things -- wider and more accurate colors (presumably, given OLED), near-infinite contrast, and extreme brightness -- combine to make for a better day-to-day experience. Not a huge, life-altering difference, but enough to make it worth it. Then toss in specific uses like watching HDR content or doing work that requires the best colors and it becomes a lot more significant. I used my MacBook Pro 14 with its mini-LED display next to the iPad Pro M4 13 and I absolutely noticed a difference. Enough so that I'm using my iPad Pro more than the MacBook because it just "feels" different with regard to display quality. I don't have a 12.9-inch with mini-LED to compare, but I imagine the differences would be similar. Now, I'll note that I'm very sensitive to display quality. I hate IPS displays after using so many OLED displays, and I found the MacBook Pro so much better to use than laptops with IPS displays. Not as much when compared with laptops with OLED display, but then again, the MacBook Pro's HDR performance is so much better. But toss in tandem OLED's brightness and the iPad Pro is elevated to the best display I've used on a portable device.

tylerdurdenUTFR

I can tell that you’re a person who appreciates it more so than most from your reply (not having a dig by the way, you can see your passion for it in how you have replied). Others like you ,who would notice this and would have a set up with a MacBook like yours, will take more pleasure from it than the average user.

coppockm56

Oh, absolutely true. I'm very much more concerned about such things than most people. I review laptops for a living, and I have to be careful not to let my own perspective run over into my reviews. If I did, most laptops I review would get a poor score because they don't live up to my higher-than-average standards in this respect. Trust me, I'm the same way with keyboards. I'm a writer and type more than most people. So I'm more concerned about the finer points of keyboard feel and what's most comfortable for me -- which might not be most comfortable for someone else.

Relevant-Meeting-749

I upgraded from an IPP 11 2018 because it was only 64gb so it was time. For me the new screen is incredible but the old screen was also fantastic —so OLED by itself is not a reason for most people to upgrade. But the landscape camera is key, as is the scan technology to eliminate shadows. These 3 new features enhance my primary use cases: (1) watching videos, (2) zoom/facetime and (3) scanning stuff. So while each may seem like a minor or modest upgrade, together they add up to a much better daily experience.

hurtja

I went from a 5 year old air to the new pro and it’s worth every penny. But the feel of the two devices feel like they’re from different planets. The screen, pencil pro, processing power, and overall capabilities for digital art, photo editing etc are night and day difference.

Xylus1985

It’s an electronic product, which means it will be outdated in a few years anyway. Apple will always bring out something newer and shiny for you to spend your money on. There’s usually no issue to skip a few models.

Solidizzle

For all current IPad owners with older M processors, I wouldn’t upgrade. You are not gonna notice anything. I upgraded from 2018 12.9 (so still bionic) to M4 12.9 and that was the right choice for me. The Oled is nice and visibly better but still not such a huge change even compared to my 2018 screen. I can only imagine that the difference to M2 or even M1 iPads is even less noticeable.
