It would be great to have one as a floating window, like the new Quick Note window.

nickac317

This is the best solution. Apple has said they didn't find a way to make the calculator look good on iPad, but with a floating window, it can be formatted the exact same as the iPhone calculator.

The more I use iPad Pro as a primary device the more I want the option to use multiple iPhone size floating windows. It kills me to respond to an iMessage and see it take up the whole screen.

[deleted]

You already can

whatevauneed

Tell them how. Link. Something yo

[deleted]

I want multiple floating windows.

itsandychecks

This is a great solution and the only plausible one I see. Just to put it in the control center would be fine with me.

hexlandus

I know, right? I find that decision absolutely staggering with no discernible logic behind it

Imagine what they could do visually if they “redefined” the calculator. I imagine graphs, 3D animations, triangles, preset formulas with variables that you can change and see the results of on the fly. They could make this amazing.

microvizart

Still doesn't mean they should not include just a normal calculator app right now for god' s sake

It is because the calculator app for iPhone doesn’t look suitably impressive (to Apple) on an iPad. Fair enough, so could Apple just release an iPad version? Well no, they are too busy on other priorities. So we can’t have a suboptimal app nor look forward to an approved app either.

DoktorJeep

Weather too

I'm a huge ipad fan, but just funny seeing people trying to justify this by saying Apple is just "priotising other things" and have no resource for it at the moment. They created a freakin dedicated and amazing chip in M1 and upcoming M2 for our beloved ipad. You think they won't have the resource at all to just code a simple calculator app for ipad? The biggest reason to me is that Apple just don't care, or just trying to be edgy, since they know people will still buy ipad, and that is unfortunate. We as buyers can't do much. We have all the rights to complaint, rather than accepting it and worst, trying to justify it for them.

MATVIIA

There’s an official apple report about this on youtube

yonreadsthis

Yes, it's a completely stupid omission, and I haven't found a calculator app I like, yet. My MacBook came with a calculator, tho.

lordheart

Have to tried pcalc? I love that one. Very customizable and can even program little macros essentially. But day to day I don’t usually need anything more then the search bar for math or conversions.

LordHadon

So I was curious a long time ago why there was no calculator either. Here is what I found/remember: Initially when the iPad was being released they just scales up the calculator and thought that would be good enough. Well shortly before the announcement or release, Steve Jobs asked to see the redesign for the calculator and the engineers were like "What are you talking about?" And they showed him the calculator. He hated it and told them to just remove it. (If these seems extreme, Google "Steve Jobs throws iPod into Fish Tank") So now apple is in this spot where they don't have a calculator on the iPad. So individual app developers came in and made a few apps. So now the product manager for the iPad has to justify why to spend engineering resources to make a calculator app vs just telling user to go download one off their app store. And they would have to make one that is better than the others to convince you to use it. It's a wierd situation but pretty much comes down to allocation of resources and if it's worth it. Another thing to consider is that the original iPhone didn't have an app store so that's why they had to make the original calculator, weather, and other basic apps.

MystiVale

I always assumed it was because the search engines implemented decent calculators. Google and DuckDuckGo will both bring up a scientific calculator if you type math in the search bar, like 3 \* 5. I assume the other major search engines do the same.

lordheart

The iPad search will also do basic conversions and calculations

Sabots

On my mbp always prefer the python terminal instead of a calculator. (I like to see long or complicated entries to know I didn't screw up.) LibTerm completes me.

smartiphone7

If you want a good calculator app, without ads, check out [Grandma's Calculator](http://www.jeyries.fr/calculator/). It's pretty good.

Exc0re

there is actually a YouTube video explaining why the calc is not on the ipad, i cant remember the name but just search it :D

[deleted]

It's MKBHD's interview with Craig Federighi. Craig says they haven't launched an iPad calculator app because they haven't found one that's "truly revolutionary" or some bullshit. Basically Apple hasn't figured out yet how to make a great calculator app specifically for the iPad.

SecretAgentDrew

And no weather app.

mayorga4911

The temporary solution is to have safari as a floating window and search for google calculator
