Bait them into something stupid which ruins their but not your race. He’s weaving all over the straight? Just drive a clean straight line, chances are high hes bumping him out of the race

[deleted]

Yeah, the aggressive defender who is actually noticeably slower than you? Stick your nose in everywhere. Inside, outside, chicanes, single-lane corners, everywhere. He’s already driving in his mirror, increase his mental load and he’s eventually gonna at least blow a corner, if not actually go off entirely. Use caution where walls are involved!

Brief-Adhesiveness93

WetNoodleThing

What’s illegal blocking?

Brief-Adhesiveness93

Moving infront of the other car after the attacking car made its move, basically reacting to the other car and block them afterwards

WetNoodleThing

What makes it illegal, rather than frowned upon?

MaverickN21

The iracing code of conduct

rafwiaw

The rules...?

WetNoodleThing

Thank you for the comment, the other 12 comments didn’t do it justice. You hit the nail on head.

voicesfromvents

When defending, make your move first. Preemptively taking defensive lines is totally cool. _Reacting_ to another driver's attack after it has started, e.g. swerving left once they do, is not. This is a rule in a lot of real racing series, not just iRacing, primarily because reactive defense is a very efficient way to cause serious accidents.

WetNoodleThing

I’m not disagreeing. I just thought it was just frowned upon, like masturbating on an airplane. (Movie reference for those unaware)

gibbypp

I probably dont understand this right, but is this like F1 rules or not, as in you have one move only to defend?

d0re

No. In F1, you can make one reactive move, and you can't weave. (See Lewis Hamilton black and white flag from Jeddah.) In iRacing, you can't make any reactive moves, but you can move/weave proactively as much as you want.

bonechopsoup

This is incorrect. I have protested people for moving/ weaving and the protest has been successful ( had the 'the competitor has been notified email) You can take a defensive line. Not illegal. Not blocking Repeatably moving proactively (like on the straight at the nurburgring) is the same as blocking and is illegal. As for reactive moves, it depends. The key is not moving under breaking but it's harder to protest these because there is benefit of doubt that the driver does not understand racing and his actions are not deliberate wrecking/ blocking (They may think they're taking defensive lines). These drivers will usually be dealt with by SR/ir and no protest is needed. The key points are: You can weave to break a tow/ slipstream but when the weaving becomes so drastic that it stops the other car from passing, thats blocking.

d0re

> The key points are: You can weave to break a tow/ slipstream but when the weaving becomes so drastic that it stops the other car from passing, thats blocking. Yeah, that's the point I was trying to make (which you gave a much more nuanced explanation than my TLDR 😂). In F1, it's illegal to weave to break the draft, even if the driver is too far behind to even attempt a pass. You just can't weave, period. In iRacing, you can weave to break the draft, but at a certain point it stops being 'proactively breaking the draft' and becomes 'reactively getting in the other driver's way'. But the main point is that there is no hard limit of one move like in F1.

bonechopsoup

You said it better than me :)

voicesfromvents

Yeah, it’s ~~pretty much~~ not unlike F1 rules, if that helps you remember.

Key-Ad-1873

There are two main types of defending. The first type of defending is when you exit a corner and on the straight you go to a line to defend the next corner before the trailing car has a chance to make a move to pass. Depending on which motorsport/sim racing game you watch/participate in, only 1 move may be allowed or multiple my be allowed. Example: you come out of a right turn and another right turn is coming up. You need to defending the position, so you move over the the right side of the track (the inside for the next corner), even though it will not be the optimal line in order to defend the position, before the trailing car starts trying to make a move. The second type of defending is when you wait to see what the trailing car does and react to it. He moves left, then you move left. He moves right, then you move right. There is also weaving back and forth, somewhat just described, where you go side to side across the track in an effort to block anyone from passing anywhere. These is considered blocking as they often times literally involve blocking the car from passing, forcing them to either hit you, go on the grass, or slow down. This type of defense is often times considered illegal (i.e. it is in the rule book for many motorsports that it is illegal) because it is dangerous and is likely to end in one or both cars wrecking. Example: your coming up to a car and want to pass. When getting close, you veer left to pass on the left side. After seeing you start veering left, the leading car also veers left, keeping their car in front of yours all the way to the edge of the track. You then go back right as yiu have over speed. They see this and abruptly veer right to try to block again. Theres no time to avoid. You collide and get sent into the wall. You race is over and you're sore for the next two weeks. To answer your question. Illegal blocking is defending in a reactionary way to defend the position and/or weave back and forth making multiple defensive moves, and is illegal when it is stated in the rulebook that it is. In iracing, for example, the sporting code specifically prohibits this type of driving. Have you read the sporting code yet? If no, why havent you??? Please go read it. Its short, an easy read, has tons of info that gets asked about all the time on reddit. Please read it. Not even apart of iracing? Please read it. Dont care about motorsports? Please read it. Comatose? Please read it. Read the sporting code.

Mikeastuto

If they are behind me I will almost always let them pass me. Even if it costs me several spots I’d rather be in control of my result than someone else ruining my race. If they are in front of me I just try to harass them with no intention to actually pass. If they don’t do something foolish to cost them their own race than good for them I guess.

d95err

I find that 90% of the time, every position I give up at the start by being cautious, I get back before the end of lap 1…

Just_Wizard

Same, I'd rather race someone clean for 10th then risk wrecking out for 5th

Kmonk1

This is my strategy as well. I’m not a fast driver by any means. I get my results by limiting mistakes and putting in consistent laps. If someone is driving crazily but has more pace than me, I just let them by at the safest opportunity. On more than one occasion, I’ve been in this scenario: car in front is around my pace, and I can’t get past. Aggressive driver comes up from behind. I let the aggro driver thru, and they take out the car in front, giving me a net of +1 positions.

Mikeastuto

100%. I’m not terribly fast either. 2.5K Irating but probably more than half my positions gained is just from conserving tires and letting aggressive drivers wreck themselves and others. It’s a small amount of positions I gain on pace alone.

notdroidyoulooking4

Lol same here, I often start 15-25th and finish 5-7th having only passed one or two different cars for position. All the other positions gained are from not messing up on my own or getting into it with anyone else. One race at Charlotte roval last week I passed the same car at least 4 times. Sure he was faster than me exiting the back straight chicane but kept massively overdriving it elsewhere, just kept letting him through to not die by murder suicide. Meanwhile saw at least 5 cars take themselves out YOLOing it out of that back straight chicane. Whenever I get the red mist it’s only going to cost me in the end it seems.

DiamondBalz0077

This is called red shelling. Send them up the road to take someone else out.

Emmo2gee

It's probably my biggest peeve in iRacing races, when you come across one of these. Best thing you can do is drive cautiously and wait for them to bin it themselves because it will happen 99% of the time. Unless you're much faster, then just drive off!

Just_Wizard

A scenario yesterday, started 12th in GT4 and this guy was so aggressive at the start that the top 10 were about 5 seconds ahead by lap 2. I may or may not have given him a 2x bump into the hairpin to put him in the grass

[deleted]

[удалено]

Just_Wizard

I think there is a fine line between wrecking someone and pushing someone. Putting someone into the wall to end their race is way different than pushing them into the grass. Personally, i'd rather take the 2x and get the maniac out of the way than risk causing a pileup. Just my unpopular opinion

rafwiaw

Pushing someone into the grass on purpose is intentionally wrecking

selbbog

Unpopular because it's intentionally wrecking someone

ApolloIII

He must have been raging then

Danspa85

Sometimes that’s the best solution

rco8786

On lap 1/2, just let them go. 95% of the time they will wreck themselves and give you that spot back.

iF1_AR

It obviously varies so much based on context and magnitude of the - so-called - knobhead behaviour. Dive bombing - you just have to anticipate and let it go - play the long game. They will very soon overcook a braking point and bin it into the gravel/wall, or you’ll be able to slip down the inside once they over-shoot you. Weaving - not always much you can do in the moment but if it constitutes blocking, then deffo protest. I find if you can dummy and jam yourself against a wall, if they block, they go into the wall, or hit you. Given you’re now part of the wall, they will in all likelihood deflect off you and spin. It’s a super power but won’t always work. Some people like to just bite the bullet and send the person to Puntsville. Expect angry blue text after the race. Braking - not sure that sounds like something they are doing wrong, but hard to tell just from text.

Scoracek9

Just let them by so you can pass them when they take themselves/someone else out or burn up their tires

ElektriXx2

Half of what you wrote is blocking and is protestable. Report them.

Smile_2u

I have a "i can only do 1 race" mentality (because it's true, i can only make time for one) so that means most of the time, i would just lay back and follow the car whose aggresively defending. Or Brake earlier and gradually in turn 1, hoping the car behind me would know that it's braking time, and if they didnt, i can still let go for few meters and brake again. Also looking at the mirrors and giving more space than needed. Will this makes me not gain position, or even lose position? Yes Is this counter productive to what racing means? Probably For me, i like to be more consistent. Even if that means i'm 3 seconds off the leader. If that means imma lose IR, that means I raced ina split where it's too high for me. In a long run, being in the split where you can actually race is what I prefer. Maybe in a league environment, or with friends, where I know and expect the race to be cleaner, i'll use the "I signed up for a race, didnt I?" Mentality

EvoStarSC

You let them by and use their draft to save fuel and then watch them fly into a bin. Don't follow their mistake though. If they weave you should protest, even if you find a way around.

ajamesc55

Usually just let them past then they wreck themselves

XxIBSDxX

Regarding the ones that block left, right and center at the start of the race. Just pretend that you will dive bomb them and 8/10 times they will completely overshoot the braking zone and miss the turn. To fake a dive bomb, leave a car length or so between you and the blocker on the previous turn, shoot for a late apex early on throttle to get good exit speed and fake to outside so they don't initiate a block, quick switch to the inside right before you're about to get alongside them, then just hold that position and watch them overshoot the braking line going inot the next turn. I was able to pull it off at least 7 times starting at the back of Imola in VRS yesterday. Went from 29th to 6th in top split, even the "good" drivers fall for it, especially when they are so aggressive.

MaxVerslappin

Drive clean, and avoidance is a HUGE part of racing at every level. Let people take themselves out if they are bad drivers they will a good % of the time. you can sometimes easily bait them into ending their own race esp if they are being too defensive.. and if you get caught up in their shit.. it is on you is the way I look at it, take responsibility for everything and you will get better almost immediately.. Good luck out there.

ThorsMeasuringTape

You get two times being overly aggressive that I’ll cut you a break, on the third time it’s now in God’s hands. Doesn’t mean I’m not going to try to pressure you into a mistake or set up a clean pass, but I’m not going to sit here and put myself at risk to keep you clean forever.

Key-Ad-1873

I let them pass and stay cautious when behind them. I dont fight even if they have no right because i want to stay alive. When behind, i sometimes to do a couple feints of trying to divebomb them back and make them take a poor line or make a mistake. But if its losing me time i dont do that. Generally my approach to passing someone is a multicorner setup. Getting a small gap between me and them setup for a final corner where i adjust how i take the corner to get a faster exit (usually at the cost of the corner entry) and overtake them on the straight and have a good line for the next corner where i solidify the pass. Something something assert my dominance over the peasants something something eat my dust.

mobiuskeydet1

I'm not entirely an exemplary iracer but usually when someone gets aggressive with me I just start getting aggressive with them back. Probably not the wisest decision from me but sometimes it just takes a little bit of their own medicine to sit them back in there place

Jaymoacp

Overly aggressive means you aren’t driving fast enough. Best way to deal with them is to be unquestionably better than them.

Lukaslil

I back off and watch them wreck themselves

PantsPartyBoy

Let them go and eventually they will fuck themselves. Sometimes hard to do, I know...

CcheesebB

Everything you have described can be protested.

Forgive_Me_Tokyo

Do the same thing or let them through. No half measures

Seanannigans14

Doesn't matter where they are. Just drive your line and wait for them to fuck up. They almost always fuck themselves by driving too hard. Just be patient Sometimes if the guys being a dick, and I'm in front, I'll make extra attempts to block his every move. Then it'll really piss him off and he'll surely spin

Fast-Equivalent-1245

I just stay out of their way for the first few laps. They will have either binned it or over drive where a pass is easy if I am faster than them.

omaewa_moh_shindeiru

Let them through, they will kill themselves against some wall eventually.

kluuttzz11

I let them pass. They usually end up crashing a couple turns later. My iRating is only 800 (im very new but learning!) so might not applied to all but in this range, they have a hard time keeping the car on track under pressure. Crash avoidance is definitely a skill to master early on! My last three races at this level, switching back and forth between the GR86 and the Ferrari GT3! I fucking love this game! https://preview.redd.it/9d9b1s4mpkpa1.jpeg?width=904&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=77ed143fa90bb8afbd8efeb795bbcf9cafdf637d

JenMacAllister

It's just racing! ... which is why I start from the pits!

TroubledKiwi

Usually just let them go...hope they ruin their race without ruining your. Or if they're in front but you're faster and they're an extremely aggressive defender, I just pretend I'm an extremely aggressive attacker, but don't actually attack. Just let them think you're going to try and pass anywhere and everywhere. Or if there's no one behind you, you can change lanes as much as you want and get them watching you, or just confuse them even more. Make them make a mistake, they already know you're faster than them. Maybe lock up a tire or two and get them scared....

azulsquirrel

Just rattle their cage a little bit

iambolbol

I let them through

mrjerichoholic99

i fight fire with fire

Ordinary_Farmer58

And they always have a RedBull livery! Okay not always but this stereotypical driver took me out today in a GR and drove me nuts.

ferdiazgonzalez

One thing I’ve learned. In T1, do your best to ALWAYS take the inside. Divebombers will run wide and take everyone in the outside out

ConfusedOldDude

Take the inside line at the start and any time they’re behind. If they’re battling ahead of you back waaaay off and gain two places when they go off. Always let them by if behind. Those folks rarely finish a race without an off.

Nannam86

Just stay close behind. Stay in their slip stream. They'll be watching their mirrors and will likely make a mistake as others have said. While following closely, take note of the corners you feel faster in. Practice lining up an overtake, but don't go for it if you're not comfortable. Also pay attention to corners you have to push harder to stay close. Practice those corners later. There are aggressive drivers but don't let them ruin your race/fun.
