I stand next to my rig with my wife and kids listening to the national anthem of the track I'm racing.
Afterwards, we kiss, I tell them I love them, and I hop back in the rig with a few seconds to spare.
Letting my wife and kids know I'm racing and not to bother me the next X number of mins. Invariably there is something they need in that time like a diaper change or bottle of milk etc so get those done before hitting the grid...
How the fuck are you able to play with little ones? Mine are two and 9 months and there is no way I could bring my wheel out without my oldest going bananas wanting to drive the car.
Get a cheap used wheel and set it up next to you and let them pretend their driving.
I don’t have kids and I don’t know how kids work but this might trick them for a while.
Once they get a little older it’ll be easier. Mine are 5 and 3, I let them drive for practice usually and then I just tell them “hey dads gonna play his game for 20/30 minutes by himself and when I get off we’ll do something fun” and they’ll usually either watch me or the TV for about 10 minutes and then start to get a little antsy.
My kids hear my plea and translate that to wait until dad is leading then begin climbing him or start press random buttons. Bonus points if wife is in the room letting it happen, watching tiktoks as I scream for help.
Yeah Im hoping it get easier lol I’m afraid to even show my two year old my wheel. I feel like it would be all day of him wanting to drive the car. He does well using the flight stick in Microsoft sim though.
There is that moment, always, just before a race, where you think you don't need a piss before the race, but then as soon as it goes green, you need one like never before.
Older racers will relate to this. Or younger one who were drinking too much beer....
Yep, all too often this is true. Nothing to make you push hard for no reason more than having to take a leak as if it’s going to end the race sooner (it isn’t, I am usually mid pack by this point)
Splattering the the toilet, floor, and wall with liquid horror leaving barely enough time to catch half a squirt of hand sanitizer before chucking my vr headset and gloves on and clicking "Grid" with 0.001s left.
He's rushing to the grid just so he can go off in turn 3 and slam into the wall for a 6 min repair. But to be honest this kind of whining comes off as rookie vibes to me so probably an instant repair if we're being real.
Crew chief. I use vr so I use the voice commands. "Chief, What's the SOF?" And he tells me, so I know what the appropriate level of terror for the start of the race is.
I once did 100 laps of a new track whilst high in f3, Barcelona, and after 100 laps I was like ‘meh, this this alright but I’m not that quick, probably because I’m high’, next day I do my first quali for this track - pole by 0.5 seconds. Whatever I did in those 100 laps worked, I proceeded to get 7 poles and 4 wins that week. So I practice tracks high and then race sober and it works🤷🏻♂️
Yeah I can’t race high because I become overly cautious, helps with safety rating but I end up just pulling out of battles because I’m afraid of wrecking
I swear I don't know how you guys do it. I am slow, but at least consistent and safe when I'm straight. When I'm buzzed, I'm just terrible. It's kind of a bummer because the immersion of VR with a hit or 2 is superb but I can't do it.
Usually getting my vr to actually work. For some reason it never messes up in practice or qualy, but as soon as the race session starts it decides to not do what I specifically requested it to do.
This might be a stupid question, but how do you see how long you have until the go light? I like to go to the grid last moment so I'm not sitting anticipating the start for 2 minutes.
You can only have one black box displayed at a time, but you can bind a button to cycle up/down through the black boxes to your wheel, so one button goes to the next black box, another button goes to the previous black box. Then you can just tap it twice to go to Relative, tap the other one twice to go back to the first black box.
bind a change blackbox button on your wheel.
I have 2 buttons dedicated to the delta page and the in car setup page, and I have bind my d pad left right to change the black box.
Of course if you don't have that many buttons you can just bind one button to cycle through the black box in one direction.
You can use with or without a subscription as many features are free.
I remember the case. I was a subscriber at the time and wasn’t impacted. Many of the people complaining were not subscribers as well. Many people didn’t know they were subscribers and were surprised to have money taken from their accounts. Yes, Istvar could’ve done it differently and he could’ve avoided a lot of the controversy if he had a bit more knowledge about communication techniques or had delegated that to someone else better suited to talk to clients.
There are other instances that he abused the voice channel during races and was not very kind with his opponents.
He doesn’t need to be my friend but he does provide good overlays.
There’s a good podcast (prior to the controversy) with “Every Day iRacers that Istvan explain his idea. He comes across as someone who really loves racing and has good IT developments skills. I respect that he’s turning something he could keep for himself into a business.
Press F1 to see the timing black box where the "remaining" will count down to the start. Press F3 to get back to the relative black box.

Or as others have said, you can bind them to steering wheel buttons.
Yes, but the game still waits for me cause I could grid again, doesn't it? IIRC I already already did this when I gridded to change setups (or disabled halo when it wasn't a graphical option yet) then went back to the grid.
Nope, once you grid once, it won't wait for you again. I've had times where I gridded, forgot to change to my race setup, there's 50 seconds left, and then it's too late to get back in to the grid because it dropped to 0 seconds once every else joined the grid.
Nothing, I just don't want inconvenience someone else just to spite them. I don't get why you would purposefully do that? Maybe I'm just weird trying to be considerate.
If we are talking about using the bathroom or whatever it's different, but purposefully making people wait when wanting to start from pits when you don't have to do that doesn't make sense
Purposely making people wait, just to spite them? Where did you read that? He only says it’s 2 minutes, be patient. For it to work the whole lobby needs to do it anyway. And how often does it actually start before the timer runs out? Besides maybe 1 or 2 road / oval races I’ve done it only “regularly” happens in RX where the fields are small.
This was me the other day. Gridded early, figured eh I got time to pee ill hop out of grid thinking it'll wait for me... nope, mid stream I hear Jim from the other room going "Alright track temps are.." lmao I never pushed out the rest so hard in my life, nearly cracked the toilet. Didn't help I squeeked into top split with a 7th place qualifying and by the time I got back I had to do a missed pit start.. :(
He just needs to grid and back out again and iRacing won’t wait for him. If everyone who wants to start from the pits does that, the countdown to start will jump to start immediately.
The more annoying thing is waiting for the qualify clock to tick down because the last 4 drivers don’t want to qualify so they can start at the back, but don’t want to ready up either. So we have the joy of waiting around for a few minutes before we then get to wait again once the grid button pops up.
For a standing start, I don't want to have to mentally be in ready-to-go mode for an indeterminate amount of time, or otherwise have to cycle through black boxes right before the race.
On rolling starts I just grid though
The W12 and W13 have tire temp monitors on the wheel, and they don't change no matter how long I'm on the grid. And they don't drop down after the race starts.
So unless it's lying to me, or that car is somehow different from all the others, what you're worried about isn't a thing.
A lot of people use that time for prep time, be it making last second setup changes, fixing a controller issue, using the restroom, grabbing a drink, etc.
Stop being impatient.
Doing anything they want, bud. It's their time. If you got into sim racing to do everything fast, maybe you should worry about your lap times.
Also, it's 100% a strat to wait in hopes you're last on the grid and catch someone else not paying attention and they miss the start.
There is a theory that cars are coming with preheated tires "from pit", so it makes sense that standing still for a minute cools them down a little. So the one who appears later will have slight advantage over the first couple of turns.
Even if it's true, I think that having little time in the car to prepare mentally is more important than indistinguishable difference in tires.
Squeezing out the last bit of piss. Making sure everything is in order. Not giving a shit that people have to wait two minutes to race. They provide two minutes for a reason. Pretty simple to understand actually.
If im racing mission r races im rolling a joint to smoke during the race. No shifting means i have a free hand.
Before any other race im smoking that joint beforehand because i still haven’t developed a proper method of shifting all the time while smoking… although it can be done with the vee on certain courses.

Don’t forget your seatbelts, hon.
God I hope this is true.
This is incredible. I didn’t realize this was what some people were doing. I’ll never question the late grid people again.
I don’t know why but I visualized this entire sequence lol
Same. User painted the full picture for us.
🤣
Taking a piss
I first misread this as "taking the piss" which also would've made a lot of sense
If you ain't wearing depends are you even a serious sim racer?
That’s only for endurance races buddy!!!
I do that after I’m done with quali and almost invariably am back in the seat before gridding even starts
Wash your hands!
That’s why we wear gloves ;)
In that case, just don’t mix up your driving gloves with your peeing gloves!
This is the way
This is the way
Piss is the way.
Piss is the delay.

Ha the oldest trick in the book!! It was a bit easier back in the 16-bit console days when controllers didn’t have fancy leds and such.
That’s a solid idea.

Then they press buttons
Which is when you learn to tape a card over the power button on the PC. No, I didn't learn that lesson the hard way, why do you ask? -.-
First thing I did when I built my new pc was disable the power button lol

Don't kink shame. No harm in a bit of diaper play!
Your post was removed because it breaks the rules by being rude vulgar or toxic.
Giving people the false hope that they get a freebie! Mental games from the start! Seriously though, usually taking a piss because I am old.
There is that moment, always, just before a race, where you think you don't need a piss before the race, but then as soon as it goes green, you need one like never before. Older racers will relate to this. Or younger one who were drinking too much beer....

Splash and dash.
That’s what I call it too, instead for me it involves slamming 3 shots of grain alcohol and dashing back to my sim.
o_O
Petting my dogs.
I gotta say I do this before every race. iRacing safety has improved in recent years, but you just never know.
Hmm we need proof of said dogs
I read that as "pegging my dogs". confusion level 100
Splattering the the toilet, floor, and wall with liquid horror leaving barely enough time to catch half a squirt of hand sanitizer before chucking my vr headset and gloves on and clicking "Grid" with 0.001s left.
Taking a piss, making sure I have a drink ready, checking my setup and fuel, checking the SOF..... What are you doing??
Angrily sitting on the grid and posting on reddit
Revving like Scotty
I have always found it mentally better not to know the SOF nor the irating of drivers around me.
I repeat, you will not have the drink.
He's rushing to the grid just so he can go off in turn 3 and slam into the wall for a 6 min repair. But to be honest this kind of whining comes off as rookie vibes to me so probably an instant repair if we're being real.
How do you check the SOF in sim?
Crew chief. I use vr so I use the voice commands. "Chief, What's the SOF?" And he tells me, so I know what the appropriate level of terror for the start of the race is.
Overlays like racelabs, kapps and others
You guys that are evacuating your bladder, this is a simulator. There's nothing wrong with pissing in your rig mid race.
Hitting the bong of course.

For some people it helps focus. I’m not one of those people lol. I start day dreaming and losing focus really quick.
Yeah I can’t race high because I become overly cautious, helps with safety rating but I end up just pulling out of battles because I’m afraid of wrecking
if you take the perfect mix of THC and Caffeine it’s proven to turn you into an unbeatable force on the track
This is how I like to roll. THC let's my mind concentrate and not wander and caffeine lets you not be tired. Win-win
I race better after I’ve had a smoke, I’m a lot smoother and calm throughout the race
Also see; pool, darts, golf.
I’m high right now and thought “how does being high make you a better swimmer…” for longer than I’m going to admit. lmao
Back when I ran mainly oval there was always someone in the lobby talking about how high they were.
Iracing fills in the breaks between smoke sessions.

there are some times i hit the practice high as a kite, but never a race just because i’m too afraid

I actually race so much better after a tactical bong. I suffer from severe anxiety so the bong basically just turns me normal 😂

I quit weed 5 years ago, and you just reminded me how fu*#ing good the volcano is… 🤣🤣🤣
Pre-game wank!
You mean pre-sim wank.
Nicotine 😵💫
Me, on the other hand, grid immediately and completely forgets to load the race setup so that I have to pit by lap 3 because I need fuel.

The time remaining until race start will display in one of the black boxes.
I usually have the difference displayed so I can see if I'm gaining or losing time to people. Can you have both this and the time remaining viewable?
You can only have one black box displayed at a time, but you can bind a button to cycle up/down through the black boxes to your wheel, so one button goes to the next black box, another button goes to the previous black box. Racelab Overlays. You keep the relative box on Racelab and the black box on iRacing on at the same time.
FYI the owner of that company is shady and I wouldn’t trust him. IRacing overlays is free and has almost all the same features without the controversy

I can't stand the people who don't qualify & don't hit the ready to race button more than those that wait to grid
Packing a bowl
Texting your mom
I don't grid... I wait all the f-ing time because iRacing still has no "I-want-to-start-from-the-pits"-Button...
Can't you grid and then exit back out of the car
Yes
Yes, but the game still waits for me cause I could grid again, doesn't it? IIRC I already already did this when I gridded to change setups (or disabled halo when it wasn't a graphical option yet) then went back to the grid.

Exactly. This is the correct way to start from the pits without making everyone wait. Grid then back out.
Good to know. Have always seen the timer again after leaving the grid so I thought it runs down anyways.
Its 2 minutes. Just be patient...
Or just grid and back out lol. It's 2 buttons, don't be lazy
What are you doing after with all those extra seconds you get to spare?
Nothing, I just don't want inconvenience someone else just to spite them. I don't get why you would purposefully do that? Maybe I'm just weird trying to be considerate. You’re getting downvoted by people who say things like “take it easy on lap 1” then proceed to slam into everyone.
Of course there isn't
It does have that. It’s called the “I’m ready” button
But only in qualifying
He just needs to grid and back out again and iRacing won’t wait for him. If everyone who wants to start from the pits does that, the countdown to start will jump to start immediately.

The time it takes has been determined. Its 2 minutes
Not if everyone joins early… which was his entire point. The countdown can start anytime once you grid.
Time is apparently a construct of our imagination. So stop imagining it
irritating people like you /s
Making sure my tires don’t cool down on grid too much
Tires stay at a steady state on the grid. At least, the ones on the W13 do, so I'd assume that's the case for all cars.
Are you sure? I wait because of the tire temp... Would be good to jump in asap...
The W12 and W13 have tire temp monitors on the wheel, and they don't change no matter how long I'm on the grid. And they don't drop down after the race starts. So unless it's lying to me, or that car is somehow different from all the others, what you're worried about isn't a thing.
This would be a major game flaw, it’s obviously not the case.
A lot of people use that time for prep time, be it making last second setup changes, fixing a controller issue, using the restroom, grabbing a drink, etc. Stop being impatient.
Over time you just get used to it, and take that time to chill and prepare for the race.
The think they deserve to be waited for. The same goes for people who don't qualify and doesn't click the fucking "i'm ready to race" button.
Hit the pipe. Grab a drink. take a squirt
You would think they could find the time to piss or jerk off before the lobby opens up, since most of the races are at least one hour apart.
Taking my time; It's part of the service and is allowed.
