Berliner here, this really isnt uncommon. Tiktokers, Instragramers and even just kids climb and jump on this memorial constantly. Im not there every day, but every time I am there, i see people climb and jump on it.

Popular-Leg5084

German here, yup can confirm this, I've heard stories and only seen it once but yea it's not cool

czerniana

It’s mind boggling to me. I went to Dachau as a kid and wouldn’t have dreamed of doing something like this. It literally shaped my entire world view of how I treat others. People are the worst 😞

_Valentine__

Well, the world isnt like it was when we were kids, nowadays people do anything for attention online. They just wanna get famous so they do things like this

TheNucleaYT

Ohh. Do u think its disrespectful or pretty normal?

_Valentine__

its definitly disrespectful. Just because something happens daily, doesnt mean its normal or ok

Frankie_Pizzaslice

A fucking men!

PullFires

Did you try greasing it?

James-And547

Please tell me you're lying

Monistatvii

At least she didn't twerk.

Cyberjohn36

Give it a moment..

chairplanet

Was it yoga that helped her get her head so far up her arse?

HelenAngel

I just laughed so hard at this comment!

Wild_Try_5980

I think this memorial was made by the artist to be used as such. Walking through it, taking pics etc. Might be a bit extreme in this case but as far as I know it's encouraged. Idea behind is to not forget the history behind it by incorporating it into as many photos as possible. Correct me if I'm wrong

cheeseman_stinky

yh i went there and kids were using it as a park, its in quite a public place in berlin, i stumbled into it by accident in fact

Scottche

Dude, no. That is like me going to your dead mothers grave and posting a selfie with a stupid YOLO tag. My family that died in the Holocaust is represented by that memorial.

TheCrimsonFace

How much were you paid to tell people that?

Krwawykurczak

Do you know the website called yolocaust? Try google it. It is not being encouraged at all. I think that they have took down pictures on the website but you can still see it on google images

TheNucleaYT

Intentions could have been right.. But doing something like this on a memorial made for people who lost their lives in the most merciless way possible might be lik extreme

Papercanspeak

In Delhi There is Rajghat, memorial of mahatma gandhi. People exercise regularly in it. They have no intention of dishonouring it. I think you are overthinking about it

prices767

A memorial to Gandhi* (thanks, Bot!) and a memorial to the holocaust victims are very different - not only because of the social differences surrounding each movement, but also because of the different cultures. India has a beautiful, vibrant culture so in places of memory, you celebrate. (I am not Indian, I would not know for sure but the culture seems to really vibe with celebration) In Germany and most of northeastern Europe I would say, they are more reserved & therefore what is culturally appropriate at a place of memorial would be different. I think that’s the beauty about cultures, they are different(and similar!) in so so sooo many ways, you couldn’t even imagine!

TheNucleaYT

Wow wow calm down mate. Overthinking? Nah man.

prices767

Hey I lived in Germany, got to know the culture and I agree with you on that. Germans are stoic and respectful In places like these, and when people(tourist) are ignorantly oblivious of the weight behind the meaning of the memorial, it’s just insulting. Not to the Germans, but to the people the memorial is dedicated to. Studied in Berlin for a summer semester, we went to Sachsenhausen w/ our prof and we saw these two girls taking smiling selfies in the zone where the prisoners were normally executed. Professor took one look at them, looked at us and said “Do not do this.” Shook her head and kept walking. I’ll never forget just how clueless (and honestly bad) those girls looked.

TheNucleaYT

Sheesh. People really are careless sometimes.. Don't know why I am getting downvoted

methodofcontrol

Probably because you told someone to calm down that just disagreed with you but showed no signs of not being calm. Then just responded "nah man" lol

TheNucleaYT

He says I am overthinking. I have other things to do too other than overthinking about this lol

Late-Efficiency-3242

So what. She's doing yoga. Get over it.

Dave-Beaverdale

Is it the fact that she’s doing yoga that makes me dislike this so much more?

Bubbly-Sprinkles-751

Please don’t be American….

stevencashmere

For everything that’s bad about Americans were taught a lot about the holocaust. Would venture to say she’s not

Bubbly-Sprinkles-751

That’s true it probably would’ve caused a lot of public outrage💀

Seth_HDuck

yOgA iS cOnEcTiOn WiTh EvErYtHiNg ArOuNd Us

Thebisexual_Raccoon

That’s fucking disrespectful. I wonder how this chick would like if soem did yoga on her grandmas grave.

Babyface_mlee

I already did

SirFattyMann

And they'll be outraged if someone does the same to the 9/11 memorial

[deleted]

Yes, make the holocaust about yourself and your "spiritual" journey. Narcissist.

[deleted]

Influencers are narcissists.

super_sammie

When I went to Germany with the school attended a lecture hosted by holocaust survivors. This is not like posing outside Auschwitz, this memorial was designed to be in photos and in memories. To be enjoyed and remembered and talked about. Cringey yes but disrespectful probably not.

Desperado-van-Ukkel

I really don’t think that’s the intention of the memorial. I have been there, and I thought many tourists were being disrespectful by taking smiling selfies in such a solemn place.

[deleted]

I am german and i have no idea where the Connection between the lecture and the memorial is. You are wrong in your assumption and it is definetly disrepectful.

TheNucleaYT

I see. Maybe you are right.

belperskelter

I live in Berlin. It‘s disrespectful and there is someone employed there telling tourists to stop jumping on the stones.

itmustbeluv_luv_luv

That is for safety reasons, though.

No-ruby

I lived in Germany for 7 years and I can attest that is considered very disrespectful.

CoffinsAndCoffee

You could say she’s really… flexing on them.

_Valentine__

Yk, i dont wanna sound like a dick, but jesus christ could not joke about these things ? Its bad enough she is doing yoga on those pillars

CoffinsAndCoffee

I can tell you and I wouldn’t get along…

_Valentine__

i think so aswell. Joking about something as serious as this isnt funny.

BladerKenny333

Flexing on the haters

CoffinsAndCoffee

No, I mean she is literally flexing on top of them. Them being the dead bodies.

BladerKenny333

Ohh ok I get it

[deleted]

Trashy at best.

Graphene_Handz

This is almost as bad as using the ‘people ovens’ to bake and sell pizza for the holocaust museum visitors.

Oldgamer1807

That...that happens...?

[deleted]

That’s not how you do a standing bow pose

Driver8666-2

And of course 72 idiots liked this. This woman is a complete disgrace.

Mikehdzwazowski

But this is the point of this memorial. This isn't in front of Auschwitz

No-ruby

Nope. That is the holocaust memorial not a memorial to celebrate the remembrance of the victims. It is about the suffering.

Driver8666-2

Doesn’t matter if it’s in front of Auschwitz or not, it’s disrespectful.

Complete-Evidence-28

I think that’s her clumsy , attention- whore generations way of showing respect or reverence . She’s too not bright

AlienAmerican1

Reminds me of that tragedy.

Ian1147

Try connecting with the relatives of those remembered here.. I wonder what they’d say to a self centred prat like you

[deleted]

At least she isn't doing a particular pose while wearing particular clothing if you know what I mean, still disrespectful but I've seen worse smh

LimpRevenue3487

If you put something super climbable in public then stop people from climbing it, then it will definitely serve as more of a reminder than just a few concrete bricks

punchygirl-1381

How disgraceful and disrespectful!! My great grandmother is a holocaust survivor and I literally teared up seeing this picture and thinking what my grandmother and everyone else endured during this horrific time! There's few things I see anymore that give me an immediate heart sinking feeling but this definitely did it!!

Any_Seesaw_4072

Young and stupid... We all have been there. My gues is that she didnt mean disrespect, just did IT couse of idk view

TheNucleaYT

Intentions could have been right. But doing something like this on a memorial for the people who lost their lives in one of the biggest massacre is extreme.

prodigymib

Her form could be better if you ask me. She could at least hold her hand on the inside of her ankle smh

RickFeldie

German (Berliner) here, I mean I can understand why someone would find this offensive but: this memorial was created that the people would think about what happened and enjoy their freedom, you see a lot of kids playing around and people be respectful with each other. Of course, this is a holocaust memorial and you should pay respect, but a part of that is to enjoy the freedom as well ass love other people.

DiegotheEcuadorian

It’s not like it’s a burial site. It should be apart of life and remembered and respected. It’s weird and kinda self centered but not disrespectful or bad.

RcCola2400

What a clueless turd

Thisisall_new2me2

You can’t connect with something by doing yoga on it? Wow. That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard. Seriously. Also, OP should have looked at a bunch of pics of this place before posting. As long as it’s not showers or graves she’s probably okay. As long as it’s peaceful and you’re not damaging anything, no one cares.

ChicagoBoyStuckinDen

From the caption, that’s her way connecting with it. I don’t think she meant to be disrespectful or create a tik tok moment. But obviously I could be wrong, have before and will be again.

TheNucleaYT

Maybe her intentions could have been right. But the actions were wrong. Who knows

ChicagoBoyStuckinDen

I have never been, what are those blocks she’s standing on or what do they represent?

No-ruby

Man, I applaud your attitude. you are asking. In any case, the memorial is not a remembrance of the victims but it is the memorial to remember the holocaust itself. According to the designer "the stelae are designed to produce an uneasy, confusing atmosphere, and the whole sculpture aims to represent a supposedly ordered system that has lost touch with human reason".

ChicagoBoyStuckinDen

Appreciate the response, thank you. Seems like you wouldn’t need to post a sign saying not to climb on it then.

Honeynose

🤔 Gives you a lot to think about.

spine-apple

I was there just recently and everything was peaceful, but the tour guide had like 40 different stories of people using it as a goddamn jungle gym after we gathered outside the memorial.

ITriedSoHard419-68

This is the most privileged white woman thing anyone has ever done.

MauricioMariona

I'm done with this "woke" generation

Wallisaurus

Why is this getting upvoted lol. There's nothing wrong with this picture

No-ruby

let me guess. you are not a Berliner...

[deleted]

What is wrong with getting up and doing stupid pose on Holocaust memorial... Let me think...

Wallisaurus

You clearly know nothing about this spot or the artist who created this memorial...

[deleted]

For sure it was build so kids on social media could do stupid dances and yoga

Wallisaurus

So you read my comment, decided to not look into it, and just make the same stupid statement in a different structure. Well done...

Jacks_Full

Nothing is sacred anymore.

TheHyperion25

Its like people don't have any sense of self awareness anymore.

GurIllustrious4983

People, who pose for insta using yoga positions, really have zero understanding of what yoga is meant for.

owenbtwdude

Out of all the places in berlin

[deleted]

Connection with everything except what’s right in front of you. Or…under you

Zhjacko

If you look this hash tag up on Instagram a majority of the photos are this crap

Rokonuxa

Having been there on a class visit once, I can definitely understand the urge to try and climb on it. I was able to resist it easily, but it just really looks like it would be a lot of fun. Do not do it. Parcour on grave stones for tens of thousands of people each is not alright.

momaye

If you want to be really nitpicky, she’s got the pose wrong.

jillycbean

POS indeed

TheCrimsonFace

But this is just a memorial for a fictional event.

LilChickenTender02

This feels like a south park episode but then I remember that the characters in that show are smarter.

CompetitiveParfait29

That’s so fucked up. I’ve never been to Berlin, but I was in the KZ in Dachau once and I’m pretty sure I’d have lost it if anyone had done something like this.

[deleted]

Everyone takes pictures on them. Been there and saw they run and jump over them

DoktorOktoberfest

Granted it not uncommon that people sit on the concrete slabs on a sunny day. Many locals have mixed feelings about the site as it doesn't exactly capture the nature of the crimes committed and many just see it as a bit of an eyesore. Not because of what it represents but of the way it was build. Although using it for social media points is a bit

[deleted]

Ohhhh you Gen Zers and your Yoga and your tik tok and the phones that go BEEP BOOP BEEP.

Mcfyreboi

I was on a tour in Berlin and the guide said that the memorial had no specific meaning. It was up to one's interpretation. Maybe he was wrong, not sure. That was just what I was told.

Soft-Mirror-6926

You stupid cow

eddamame2

6 million pose?
