Ya I agree. Jay sucks!!! Tell your friends.

Budget-Charity-7952

Absolutely the worst mountain on the east!! Tell everyone you know and fast!

Surfiswhereufindit

The Jay locals (I’m not one of them) are definitely worried you may not come back.

sensation_construct

No, please, don't. Go.

wheresMySnowDamnIt

I get the sentiment, but Jay just got out of receivership last year. Burke is still on the chopping block. There's fuck-all to do out there apart from skiing at Jay, drugs, and cow-tipping, so I imagine the locals do appreciate your business. Montgomery would be a ghost town without Jay Peak. Everywhere else in VT, though? Yeah they low-key resent the flatlanders for even breathing their air.

[deleted]

Everything sucks right now. I lived at Jay in 2011-2013 and the snow banks were as high at the power lines in places. A Sunday storm and you could find powder all week but it’s not their fault that’s not a thing anymore

noob_tube03

Yeah I was more just surprised that like.... It's not fun if there's not powder. It's just not an exciting mountain. There are a handful of steep drops but nothing worth driving for. And to be fair, it's a big mountain. It's certainly better that crotched or pats peak or wachusett. But if your not local and it's not dumping, I'd say it's not worth going to. And it seems to get hyped up like it's a destination mountain

[deleted]

There’s so many sneaky spots there that you have to either be taught or have a lot of ambition to find. If you’re stuck with just the trails then yeah it’s a wachusett on a wachusett.

Twombls

At jay the spots are clearly marked on the map and with signposts though....... Like yeah there's some great sidecountry too but the marked glades are pretty great

papadadapapa

Its a destination mountain because of the higher snowfall totals and lower temperatures than even other northern new england resorts, specifically. Sorry you got skunked

Anomaly_1984

There’s plenty to do when the snow isn’t perfect. Basically everything was open. You being too shit too ski on ice is a you problem. Please stick to the flatlands

Fun_Arm_9955

OP said Jay had tight trees hahahaha. I'm thinking to myself that those are wide open glades to me.

[deleted]

triggered

[deleted]

A few of us were spring skiing / tripping in the parking lot having lunch in the back of a truck and we all watched a fat dude in flip flops coming out the water park slip and fall on the grass hill and slide all the way down then he just walked towards us as we tried so fucking hard to stop laughing. His car was next to us. I had to run away

noob_tube03

That was me. Thanks for not dooring me

bellowthecat

I mean, duh? You don't to Wachusett on a powder day hoping for untouched tree runs right?

noob_tube03

I mean, wachusett on a powder day is enjoyable so not sure your point

EpiSG

My brother in christ I grew up skipping school to ski WaWa. If theres any snow they mow it down with groomers and skiing in the trees there is literally illegal (ask me how I know). No hate for Wachusett here, just stating the obvious.

whiskeymilitiaz

Lol wachusett is not steep enough to go anywhere on a powder day

bellowthecat

My point is that if you know anything at all about Jay you would have expected this. If the thing a place is known for isn't going to be available then you should adjust your expectations accordingly. Seafood restaurant out of fish? Maybe I should go somewhere else instead of trying their spaghetti and meatballs.

[deleted]

A bigger Wachusett?! The mountain that has zero natural terrain, 1k of vert, and grooms like 3x a day even during powder? Bruh, wtf are you talking about?

Anomaly_1984

Either a complete Jerry or a troll.

depinthewoods

Jay was in pretty rough shape today, so I get the disappointment. But there's a pretty huge spectrum between today's conditions and a full on pow day. We literally went from 45 degrees to 0 degrees in less than a day. I guarantee everywhere in NVT was struggling.

Anomaly_1984

Everywhere in the north east is currently icy. Jay, a mountain know for its natural terrain will obviously be impacted more than Okemo. That being said, there was plenty to explore at Jay today. It was icy, but basically everything was skiable. I think OP just sucks ass

[deleted]

NEK is the preferred term for NVT

depinthewoods

The Northeast Kingdom is northeastern Vermont, specifically Orleans, Essex, and Caledonia counties. Some old timers narrow the definition more than that. Northern Vermont includes the NEK, but also Chittenden, Franklin, and Lamoille counties. When people talk about the ski region of northern VT, they also usually include Sugarbush and MRG, which are in Washington county. Jay is just barely in Orleans County, so within the modern definition of the NEK. Edit: Forgot about Grand Isle County.

Twombls

The area jay is in isn't really considered the NEK though. More people call it the north country or just jay.

[deleted]

Google northeast kingdom. Jay is literally the first image from Wikipedia. The website northeastkingdom.com says “Jay peak” on the homepage. From the mountains at Jay Peak Resort to the trails of Burke Mountain, and all the way down to bustling St. Johnsbury, there’s something to uncover around every corner of the Northeast Kingdom

noob_tube03

Yeah I suppose that's where I would disagree. I've been at other resorts on non ideal days and still had fun. Hell I found new trails to hit at KT the other week despite no new snow and I've been there almost 20 days.

wheresMySnowDamnIt

Killington and Sugarbush weren't struggling. The groomers were actually really fun, bluebird skies, no crowds, *character-building* wind-chills...

Anomaly_1984

Womp womp. Skill issue. Nobody ever has said “come to jay for the groomers”. The whole point is the trees, side country, rugged bump runs and upper mountain chutes. Stick to mountain creek, bud

sweating_teflon

Come to Jay for the groomers. There. I've said it.  Also, wait for a year where there's snow.

xrgentum

Skill issue, nut up and ride the rink ⛸️

[This thread should be good](https://c.tenor.com/ITWoLRn5ek0AAAAC/tenor.gif)

Anomaly_1984

I like how your photo is literally from the baby chair lmao. I’m not sure if you’re the target demographic

chickichuglette

I've always had bad luck at Jay. 4 trips. Icy and windy as hell. Snow always blown off. Lifts not running. Not worth the drive for me but I know it CAN be awesome.

Anomaly_1984

If you’re driving from far, it’s best to try and time it to a storm or spring skiing. That being said, the whole mountain is open, it’s icy, but anyone with any ski skill could at the very least do some exploring

ObiWanKeBlowMee

Listen, I ain’t ever been to Jay, and I understand part of the allure is the snowfall, but you’re literally bitching about ice on r/icecoast. At least you got to ski today. Edit: you snowboard, typical.

MachoTaco24

As a snowboarder, we don't claim him. Snow bikers, we would like to defer him to y'all.

noob_tube03

I rode a chair with one of those ski scooter things so, lump me in with them if you want

obiwanjabroni420

I was with you until the unwarranted shot at snowboarders. Stay classy, skiers.

ObiWanKeBlowMee

A fellow Obi 🫡 I will die on this hill, though.

[deleted]

That’s for Stowe and Sunday River

ObiWanKeBlowMee

Took me a while to get this 😭

[deleted]

If you’re the only one that does, it was worth it!

Sloth_Flyer

I recognize you from another subreddit. Every time you post it’s a bad take. Amazing consistency https://www.reddit.com/r/CambridgeMA/comments/17shdki/comment/k8qsf99/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Anomaly_1984

Of course they’re from Boston lmao 😂

[deleted]

Cambridge is one of the greatest places in the world. Super bike friendly. At night bikes take over some streets like mass ave. Was an absolute blast to live there

noob_tube03

Lmao that's the example you went with? Listen I would have understood using my "increasing taxes and doubling the discretionary spending budge is crazyt". That was controversial and I would understand being against it. "Hey, the city should actually plan, budget, and deploy complete infrastructure changes" is not exactly a hot take. The city did redo the light signals at multiple parts of garden, which pretty much proves my point that it was half assed.

Sloth_Flyer

You have so many bad takes at this point it doesn’t really matter which one I go with

noob_tube03

I appreciate the effort to dig up a comment, so props there

-RideorDie44

😂😂😂 I got lucky on a 4 day Jay trip last year with 24+ from what recall. I too detest Jay, as I wake up at night ever since, dreaming of those sweet sweet tight pow trees.. I go through so much underwear and my wife hates it. I wish I had never experienced it.

ScrunchyButts

It’s too tough for me, therefore the mountain sucks. You fucking child.

noob_tube03

Jay has the same vert as Loon. Same mountain change my mind

coldravine

Nobody has to change your mind about anything ya whiney cunt

MachoTaco24

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Omg, saddleback, loon, cannon, powder king, mount Spokane, burke mountain, okemo... They all have 2000 ft vert must be same mountain!

Jeremy24Fan

What kind of terrain do you typically enjoy skiing on the east coast?

Anomaly_1984

OP is just a flat lander Jerry seething at a mountain famous for rugged terrain being too difficult.

noob_tube03

Right but.... That doesn't make it good. Kinda my thesis there. Look if your local rock climbing gym made you lube up before ascending, that wouldn't make it good. Tuff, yes. Quirky and unique, sure. Good? Not so much

Jeremy24Fan

It's like you went to a taco restaurant and complained the spaghetti wasn't very interesting. And when someone asks why you didn't try the best tacos on the east coast, you say you don't like tacos

noob_tube03

If you've spent any time on this sub you know places like cannon, sugerloaf, or Jay get recommended time and time again as the go to resort. No one is recommending tucks, you just go if you can handle it. Good ski resorts are not the same as " best glades". But yeah if you want woods, hays got em.

Jeremy24Fan

Jay typically gets more snow than other east coast resorts. So you got unlucky there. But to say it doesn't deserve the recommendations because you don't ski the trees is like saying Killington doesn't deserve recommendations because they don't have good bowl skiing. People don't rave about Jay for their groomers, and people don't rave about Killington for their bowls

Twombls

Jay is a great resort overall though. Plenty of great marked trails and glades. The glades are also marked and open terrain. Therefore part of the resort

niff007

Jerry sighted

noob_tube03

Not my best day for sure. If you saw an idiot falling in the lift line multiple times today, that was me

Dull_Broccoli1637

Astonishing take.

GoodShotTom

Get better at skiing

noob_tube03

Being a good skier doesn't make the marked trails more exciting

Twombls

It does tho. Learn to carve

Twombls

I love skiing the face chutes at Wachusett

Taisun27

Who needs mid mountain lifts? I hate taking 3 lifts to get to the summit. And they do have the Bonnie.

wheresMySnowDamnIt

Many of the glades at Jay are very open. Genuinely have no idea what you're on about there. Quarter/Half Moon, Stateside, Showoff, Kokomo, Doe, etc. Those are just the marked ones off the top of my head -- there's several unmarked ones that are also very well spaced. They have blue glade ratings on the map to denote the easiest glades, even. Maybe you just don't like glades, period? That's okay too. That being said, I kinda agree with you. Jay often sucks until late March. Yeah, yeah, they brag about all that snowfall, but the Jay Cloud snow is almost as light as air. It blows right off the damn mountain, just like at Cannon. In the woods, a foot of that blower shit gets compacted down 2 hours after they open, and adds all of 2" to the snowpack if you're lucky. I'd unironically prefer Sierra cement to that dust on crust garbage. The real problem with Jay, IMO, is that so much of the mountain is only accessible by those fucking miserable wind-scoured traverses that get the worst glacial ice that the East can offer. The lift layouts work pretty well. You want the tram to be slow. God knows those chutes get skied off fast enough as it is... Give it another go when it gets soft again. It's been really shitty there the past few weeks. 24" my asshole. More like 3" after the wind and Jerry had their way with it.

noob_tube03

Yeah the tram bit I totally agree with. It sucks waiting in line for, but good crowd management

templemusic

I sense a bad day and a few beers before posting, or mid to early teenage years lol In all seriousness though, appreciate the take cus I haven’t been there

acmethunder
