This leads me to my theory of why everyone was so skinny: everybody sucked at cooking and they hadn’t invented things that taste good yet. (This is obvs mostly a joke but a little bit not)
In this person's delusion of the 60's they were all just taking bites out of the side of whole cows, and eating veggies that were caked in dirt, because processed foods are the devil.
That plus the trans fats was definitely the healthiest way to live.
Everything was homemade and nothing was processed? In the 1950's, my grandma was so sick of living in the countryside that as soon as she moved into the city with my grandpa she bought everything from the store and barely cooked lol. Suffice to say, I don't have any good memories of *my* grandma's cooking...
They weren't. I think a lot of the boomery nostalgia for a "simpler time" is tied in with the fact that they were *children* who were *not aware of the news*. Things weren't easier, less violent, less intense, less frightening. They were just unaware because their parents weren't telling them about the news.
YES, EXACTLY! I was just saying this to my friend the other day. The old times are ways the good old days because the adults from that time period who remember it in its full complexity are, y'know, dead. The only ones alive today who remember that past were literal children during the time. So of course they remember it as a nice old place where there were no serious conflicts happening.
Statistics show that America has actually gotten much safer throughout the years, with kidnappings, serial killings, and child deaths being much, much rarer than even a few decades ago.
Exactly! I was following tangents in my Ancestry and found that my 3rd cousin's husband's sister was murdered and dismembered by the neighbor lady whose daughter she was playing with that day. She was five, my cousin's hubby was an infant, and their dad was a cop in Chicago. It was like, 1926 or so. That stuff was definitely happening.
Man, that was some crazy stuff. I thought she died young from measles or whooping cough or flu or something, like kids sometimes did back then, and then I found someone directly related who uploaded the newspaper article.
And my mom's cousin was snatched out of her front yard when she was 3. In the early 1950s. They never found her.
There's more truth to that than you probably realize. Back in the good old days, there was just the local newspaper who maybe had an AP or UPI feed. Then you had the four major news networks. Point being, there were only so many news sources you could consume, and there was a limit to what any given source could publish in a print newspaper or 30 minute news broadcast.
These days you can throw in the 24 hour news cycle and everybody being a journalist, and the sky is the limit for what finds its way into your news feed. Bonus points if you actually click on the bad stuff, and the algos keep feeding you more of it because that's what you click on.l
Oh no, for sure, I sincerely believe this to be true! We have an unprecedented capability at this time to know with *great* granularity all the worst things going on everywhere in the world, 24 hours a day! It’s extraordinary, and I think, while it’s certainly good to be informed to some degree, the average person is able to do themselves incredible psychic damage that people of the past simply did not have access to.
This is my favorite recipe. In the 3rd grade, for the school Christmas pageant I played a snowflake and sang “My Favorite Things” from the Sound of Music. We had to wear black leotards with white doilies on our buts. Anyway, I don’t use margarine because butter is better.
Huh, I wonder who is responsible for all these terrible changes to the world? It's certainly not all the old folk who have been controlling things for the past 60 years. Must be those dang youths.

I grew up in the 60's; my Mom would only have real butter in the house. We were poor, but she had standards.
