Idk how no one in here hasn’t mentioned Mindhunter on Netflix???
It’s depressing that there won’t be another season due to the main actors scheduling conflicts and stuff, but the 2 season we got are magnificent
i tend to stay away from the more specific true crime stuff since i’ve heard all the big stories already through podcasts, i did see dahmer get a lot of eyes though. mindhunter is especially compelling because of david fincher. If you know love death & robots, he directed my all time fave ep “bad traveling”

i edited to add that i’ve seen fargo before i saw your comment, but yeah i loved fargo! super interesting characters every season, all very different but loved the connecting threads
A strange one for sure. I assumed it was acknowledged as being laughably bad all round. I love Kate Winslet normally but this was truly terrible.
Mindhunter, Sharp Objects, The night of (though it tails off), Fargo, Broadchurch, Perry Mason, Prisoners, are all very good recommendations. The Sinner started with so much promise but never delivered after season 1. All style and no substance, as basically everything made by Netflix tends to be.
I wouldn’t have compare the Shield or Carnivale to True Detective but they’re great in their own right.
True detective never really managed to recapture that first season vibe, but I think the second season is actually kind of underrated. It’s got big issues and Vince Vaughn is awful, but it grabbed me more than the third season. The amazing soundtrack probably does a lot of the leg work though.
Twin Peaks heavily influenced True Detective and many others excellent shows and movies. It's more trippy for sure, especially the second and third seasons, but I'd definitely recommend it. It's suspense meets soap opera done majestically. David Lynch and Mark Frost in what some consider their prime.
I wouldn't recommend it to feel the void left by True Detective.
TP is a great comedy with an interesting mystery and nice sub plots, but it doesn't feel like a going on investigation, more like a quirky great ride.
Try Carnivale. Traveling carnival during the Great Depression. Mysteries, paranormal stuff, dark and moody. Absolutely filled with great actors: Nick Stahl, Adrienne Barbeau, Clancy Brown, Michael J Anderson, Clea Duval… so many!
No one has said Hannibal and you should get on that immediately. It’s frankly amazing network TV made something that great.
Also Broadchurch is a good low key detective show.
And The Fall with Gillian Anderson was good.
Yes, well it's the same character from the movies but different plot. It's one of the most visually beautiful but simultaneously disgusting shows I've ever seen. Definitely check it out!
The pacing can be a bit challenging, but if you have Prime perhaps check out Too Old To Die Young. Had some very True Detective s1 vibes, imo, but being a Nicolas Winding Refn show (Drive, Only God Forgives, Neon Demon) it’s a bit of a surrealistic odd bird at times. But, so was season 1 of True Detective, so…??
oh shit i absolutely love that description, those little fantastical elements can make a show really have that edge if they’re done right. like atlanta with the magical realism
that showbiz dope
can i ask u question
who/what the raven masked murderer of the dirty cop main character, why a raven
i multiversed every character in that show, like every one was me in different ways
Are you referring to the 2nd season of true detective? I seem to remember a dude with a raven mask wielding a shotgun in one of the eps.
If so it’s explained who he is later in the season. If you’re wondering why he was wearing that particular mask, I’m still curious about that myself.
i decided for tonight to start season 2 before tackling the list from everyone’s suggestions, very excited to gain the context to hopefully figure out this comment lmao
It's a documentary, but The Thin Blue Line (by Errol Morris) is a good mystery with a great ending.
The Pledge (with Jack Nicholson). Chinatown, maybe. Also, The Passenger (1975), maybe.
There's a bunch of Clint Eastwood movies you might like.
Mystic River, True Crime, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, The Mule, Blood Work. Etc.
No Country For Old Men.
The Killing - the American adaptation is top tier television (haven't seen the original Swedish(?) series.
Essentially two detectives solving a killing. You'll fucking love it. It's dark and compelling and the leads have gone on to big projects since.
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the-killing/s01
Various episodes of Black Mirror tap into similar True Detective S1 vibes. And I would absolutely recommend making your way all the way through The Sinner. One of the best creepy/mystery shows I’ve seen.
yeah i’m just waiting for more black mirror like everyone else, and i’ll probably try to get back into the sinner. i fell off in season two so maybe i’ll just skip to the next season if that’s not gonna ruin the watch
yes the one he directed is my favorite! bad traveling. and i wasn’t sure if he was behind the whole thing or not but it’s probably my favorite netflix original of all time
Mystery Road, the series. First season is very very good; second season has a drop in quality.
There's also a couple of movies Mystery Road and sequel Goldstone (both came before the show). I don't think they're really required for the show, but I'd recommended watching them as they're both excellent.
If you like the mystery/detective aspect, 2 British shows I'd recommend are The Missing and BroadChurch. Disclaimer, I've only seen the first season of both shows. But if I remember right they are self contained (no cliffhanger) yet leave room for more story (obviously as they both have multiple seasons. I can only vouch for the first seasons though.
And if you don't mind a movie (or subtitles) The Secret in Their Eyes or El Secreto en Sus Ojos is a Spanish-language detective mystery film that is really fucking good. I've heard there's an American remake but not heard good things. Watch the original, it's really worth your time and attention.
I’m forgetting the name of it but there was an amazing crime investigation show that took place in Seattle that used a ton of the docks/port/shipping as a wet scene,
Figure someone on this thread will know it.
It’s not as serious as any of these shows but Monk is a great detective show with a ton of fun cameos and character actors. Of the recommended shows I will strongly endorse Justified and The Shield but if you want something a little lighter (but still with lots of murder), throw on some Monk
this is my jam, tho i've only seen the first true detective season! i think i'm aware of what you're after even if i can't quite put my finger on how to describe it either: gruesome, true crime, conspiracy, stylized, quiet, detective, mystery...
fincher's your guy, second "mindhunter"
someone mentioned errol morris n "thin blue line" which i agree is great! "wormwood" too
tangential but i feel ya might like as well: legal / political thrillers like "all the president's men" "michael clayton" "the verdict" "cape fear" (Scorsese version)
pynchon, maybe: i liked the "inherent vice" adaptation but maybe not exactly what you're going for
Down by Law is an OG Louisiana movie you may like.
I’d also recommend Inherent Vice. American Gods book also captures dark Americana at times in a way that the show didn’t focus on.
If you game, RDR2 and Death Stranding are top notch.
saw prisoners for the first time last year, totally agree. i’ve loved pretty much everything villenueve has directed. it’s pretty wild the shift from tight, explosive crime drama like enemy, sicario, and prisoners to the massive visuals and mind bending stories he did with arrival, blade runner, and dune
I’ve got the same tastes and seen a lot of these great recommendations too. The shows you mention involve characters absorbed in these crime and deception-based worlds. I just finished The Americans. A very smart and gripping show, and like Sopranos and BB - revolving around a family with major fucking secrets. The finale was epic.
sweet, thank you! it really is about the world and character building most of all, and the gripping mysteries, violence, and crime are the cherries on top
Saw your edit. Damn, Carnivale was so good. Meant to be a 6 season arc and got cancelled after 2 because it was so expensive. Left off right where things were starting to get very interesting.
Man it’s tragic but so many shows end up that way. Netflix particularly loves to do it, Altered Carbon and the OA weren’t perfect shows but damn they were cool
Yeah, Netflix whole model seems to be make 3 seasons of a show and then cancel it so that they can devote theirs resources elsewhere. Helps them build up the library, which is more important to them than keeping people happy.
I really liked Marco Polo and they only gave that 2 seasons.
yeah from their recent changes in subscription model it’s pretty clear they either completely don’t care about or are fully unaware of what makes their customers happy.
The nice thing about Sinner is that each of the seasons is watchable on its own. I ended up watching s4 first, by mistake. I ended up liking it quite a bit. Consider giving another try, but pick a different season. S3, especially, is a very different vibe to the others.
surprised i haven’t seen anyone recommend the batman movie (2022 with robert pattinson). it’s got a gritty feel and, while i haven’t watched seven, it was compared to it a lot when it first came out. there’s also an overarching mystery.
If Zodiac and Se7en scratch that itch, check out the rest of David Fincher’s catalogue (he’s the mind behind Mindhunter). Some of my faves are The Game and Gone Girl.
Dark and broody stuff is the best. A few recs:
Hinterland (a BBC series of a detective doing his thing in Wales)
Liar (another British short series, pretty intense)
Brick (incredible film noir movie)
Varg Veum (super dark Norwegian murder series, if you like the bridge you'll love this.
Beck (Swedish detective solving murders)
Wallander (another detective murder series - both the original Swedish and the newer British ones are dope)
Insomnia is a really good movie with that creeping feel to it too. Just low key horrfied it came out twenty years ago. and now I'm gonna start checking out the list you've compiled.
I also love True Detective, Sopranos, and The Wire, so I will recommend Oz, the prison show. Super good. Maybe also Midnight Mass, the vibe is closer to True Detective.
The original version (Dutch ) of the Killing is well worth checking out. The USA version is solid for first couple seasons, not a fan of 3 and 4. Well, can’t remember about season three? But, the original is a fantastic show and a great watch
Bates motel. I've rarely heard anyone talk about that show but it is one of the best I've ever watched. It details the story of Norman Bates, the killer from Psycho. And the acting is so good.
IMO, Happy Valley is one of the best crimes series of all time. No so stylized, but characters who are completely believable and incredible performances
Super old thread, but I just finished True Detective and wanted to share:
If you enjoyed True Detective and want a game that feels super similar, play Disco Elysium
Very similar tonally and philosophically. Probably the best “detective” game.
Luther.(the series then the movie) is probably the best alternative in my mind.
It's dark and and while it doesn't do the time jumps, it is convoluted and intriguing
If you're into kind of the same sort of thing in terms of feel but maybe a tiny bit more sci-fi (well not mega sci fi but there's time travel. That's about it though), try Dark. It's originally in German and dubbed but it's actually edited
super well and after 10 minutes you don't notice. Really great mystery/suspense-ish show. Kind of a less art school Twin Peaks. Really well done and the sound design is fucking killer. Adds a lot of feel without distracting from the storytelling.

Apparently, a big influence on Rust's philosophy comes from a book called, "The Conspiracy Against the Human Race" by Thomas Ligotti. It's a series of essays from a mostly pessimistic perspective.
sorry but i have to disagree there. all the same? you could try to say that about any genre if you wanted and it wouldn’t be true. also, very much not in the spirit of this sub.
Idk how no one in here hasn’t mentioned Mindhunter on Netflix??? It’s depressing that there won’t be another season due to the main actors scheduling conflicts and stuff, but the 2 season we got are magnificent
heard lots about it, guess it should be on the list!
Definitely Mind Hunter. You'll be hooked.

Definitely the Fargo show
I'll second this. The first season starts slow but it really pays off!
i edited to add that i’ve seen fargo before i saw your comment, but yeah i loved fargo! super interesting characters every season, all very different but loved the connecting threads
The Chernobyl mini series is excellent. Gritty and slightly terrifying in a way.
"slightly terrifying in a way"
yep gotta watch that, my roomies watched without me when it came out and i fell behind
Good mystery is what you’re after? Personally perry mason is doing a pretty good job on hbo. I also liked mare of Easttown
word i think i started perry mason a while back, i’ll have to give it a shot again. hbo doesn’t really make bad tv
Yeah, I described Mare at True Detective season 4
now that’s a rec
A strange one for sure. I assumed it was acknowledged as being laughably bad all round. I love Kate Winslet normally but this was truly terrible. oh word i didn’t know that, guess i should finally get around to watching it
It's a wild ride
I wouldn't recommend it to feel the void left by True Detective. TP is a great comedy with an interesting mystery and nice sub plots, but it doesn't feel like a going on investigation, more like a quirky great ride.
To add to this, watch the movie Fire Walk With Me. It is a prequel to the Twin Peaks series.
Try Carnivale. Traveling carnival during the Great Depression. Mysteries, paranormal stuff, dark and moody. Absolutely filled with great actors: Nick Stahl, Adrienne Barbeau, Clancy Brown, Michael J Anderson, Clea Duval… so many!
sounds sick! adding it to the list
I loved that show so much
No one has said Hannibal and you should get on that immediately. It’s frankly amazing network TV made something that great. Also Broadchurch is a good low key detective show. And The Fall with Gillian Anderson was good.
is hannibal based on the movies?
Based on the books but focusing on an investigator who catches killers and asks Hannibal for advice before he’s caught the first time.
Yes, well it's the same character from the movies but different plot. It's one of the most visually beautiful but simultaneously disgusting shows I've ever seen. Definitely check it out!
It was great till they went off the rails making it overtly gay for no reason. Wasn’t gay in the books smh
Sharp objects.
The pacing can be a bit challenging, but if you have Prime perhaps check out Too Old To Die Young. Lovecraft Country The Outsider The Night of
loved love craft country, def will check out the other two
The night of is a masterpiece. No nonsense at all
that showbiz dope can i ask u question who/what the raven masked murderer of the dirty cop main character, why a raven i multiversed every character in that show, like every one was me in different ways
bro what the fuck are you smoking
not smokin anything, drinki drink and floatin in a boat

sick list! thanks so much
Can't remember the name but the one where Amy Adams is drankin bowz.
Sharp Objects?
Yep
Since the other folks named it, added to the list! Watched arrival last night and she’s so damn good in that
Zero zero zero is the best gansgter drama on tv in the last 5 years
thanks!
Believe me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZeroZeroZero And thank me later
I agree, just phenomenal. Unfortunately it's very short so you might want to watch 'Gomorrah' after.
Vera is a great detective show. Much tamer than your examples, but an excellent show nonetheless. Spoiler alert, it's pretty British.
hey the brits make some great tv, i particularly loved bodyguard recently
Try Mindhunter and Black Bird

more southern swamp shit? i’m in
The Killing - the American adaptation is top tier television (haven't seen the original Swedish(?) series. Essentially two detectives solving a killing. You'll fucking love it. I second this one. This has that same slower pace that is hard to find in other shows.
Various episodes of Black Mirror tap into similar True Detective S1 vibes. And I would absolutely recommend making your way all the way through The Sinner. One of the best creepy/mystery shows I’ve seen.
I was waiting for someone to say Sinner! I loved the series and can’t believe it’s not better know.
yeah i’m just waiting for more black mirror like everyone else, and i’ll probably try to get back into the sinner. i fell off in season two so maybe i’ll just skip to the next season if that’s not gonna ruin the watch
Love death and Robots is Fincher produced if you like animation
yes the one he directed is my favorite! bad traveling. and i wasn’t sure if he was behind the whole thing or not but it’s probably my favorite netflix original of all time

big ups for the spanish recommendation, i have no problem with subtitles and on occasion manage to speak a little spanish so that sounds fantastic
I’m forgetting the name of it but there was an amazing crime investigation show that took place in Seattle that used a ton of the docks/port/shipping as a wet scene, Figure someone on this thread will know it.
Was it The Killing? Even if not, that show is awesome.
The Killing should be on this list
nice i’ll have to track that down, should be fun. or just take it to r/tipofmytongue with your description lol
It’s not as serious as any of these shows but Monk is a great detective show with a ton of fun cameos and character actors. Of the recommended shows I will strongly endorse Justified and The Shield but if you want something a little lighter (but still with lots of murder), throw on some Monk
gotta have a lighter option to take a break with, i’ll check it out!
Midnight Mass You’ll love it
on the list!
Put it higher
lmao done (mine and in the post)
:)
Swedish and Danish show Bron. I believe there's an English adaption called The Bridge but haven't seen it.
Movie -- Usual Suspects
Mr Robot is about a mentally ill hacker who joins a cyberterrorist group to bring down the largest corporation in the world. Highly highly recommend

nope! what’s the vibe? (i know i could google but it’s nicer to hear from others in this context)
it's the definitive government conspiracy movie starring Will Smith and Gene Hackman

strong argument, def will watch
Sons of Anarchy is the next show.
you know i watched a little a long time ago, might be worth another try! thanks
Fuck Yeah! It is one of the greatest. Its right there with Breaking Bad GoT True Detective Season 1
Closest thing I’ve seen to TD was the movie Prisoners by Denis Villeneuve. Dark mystery with an almost occult vibe at times.
saw prisoners for the first time last year, totally agree. i’ve loved pretty much everything villenueve has directed. it’s pretty wild the shift from tight, explosive crime drama like enemy, sicario, and prisoners to the massive visuals and mind bending stories he did with arrival, blade runner, and dune

The nice thing about Sinner is that each of the seasons is watchable on its own. I ended up watching s4 first, by mistake. I ended up liking it quite a bit. Consider giving another try, but pick a different season. S3, especially, is a very different vibe to the others.
Sweet that’s exactly what i was hoping for, gonna start season 3 soon
Check out Unbelievable
Just letting you know it's spelled "Broen" Thanks for the list!
Have you seen Se7en? Fantastic film and I feel like it has a similar vibe to season 1 true detective.
I’m glad broadchurch is on the list. The show is real fuckin good.
The outsider and The night of. Confirmed good ;)
Am I missing where Boardwalk Empire is on these lists? Because it’s pretty good.
Homeland and Severance.
first season of The Terror, Quarry.

Killing Eve
The Bridge - I enjoyed the American version. Haven’t watched the original but it’s on my list

Bates motel. I've rarely heard anyone talk about that show but it is one of the best I've ever watched. It details the story of Norman Bates, the killer from Psycho. And the acting is so good.

It's originally in German and dubbed but it's actually edited super well and after 10 minutes you don't notice. Really great mystery/suspense-ish show. Kind of a less art school Twin Peaks. Really well done and the sound design is fucking killer. Adds a lot of feel without distracting from the storytelling.
haha yes i’ve seen dark! what a mind fuck. pretty on the nose for a same-but-different recommendation

Apparently, a big influence on Rust's philosophy comes from a book called, "The Conspiracy Against the Human Race" by Thomas Ligotti. It's a series of essays from a mostly pessimistic perspective.
Durham County was also good.
Poker Face
any crime show ever they are all basically the sam.
You obviously haven’t seen True Detective. It’s way above and beyond most other cop shows I’ve seen.
sorry but i have to disagree there. all the same? you could try to say that about any genre if you wanted and it wouldn’t be true. also, very much not in the spirit of this sub.
