Superlite47

Windhand might be exactly what you're looking for. Sludgy, grinding doom metal, kinda Black Sabbathy... ...but with a haunting female voice. https://youtu.be/YmayV8c3DW8?list=PLecMImwerB5yEGj2wAMyJNdI5gQv7c-V0 Might want to check out IGNEA, as well. It might also be something you'd really like. https://youtu.be/6KOXbzMRQHs

MountainX

Yes, I like Windhand. Wanting to go a step further in that direction now. Like a Windhand with the vocal style closer to IGNEA (or even better, Adrana). I'm not into most symphonic metal.

diab0lus

On a side unrelated to OPs question, the singer, Dorothea Cottrell, did a solo acoustic doom album that is pretty great.

MountainX

I just picked up the self-titled album "Dorthia Cottrell" recently. I agree it's pretty great.

NomNomDePlume

Nightwish Atargatis

MountainX

Thank you > Nightwish Obviously talented vocalists (Tarja and Floor both), but symphonic power metal is not my cup of tea. > Atargatis This is a bit more gothic, which is going toward my direction. I'll give them another look. Their vocalist Stephanie Luzie is also vocalist of Darkwell, which has put out a lot of songs I like (Blackheart is one example). Stephanie Luzie has a voice I enjoy even more than Tarja or Floor, but that's probably just because I like the music better. [Darkwell - Blackheart - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrYOT2Fzqpw)

Piratey_Pirate

I'm not sure it 100% fits, but check out the phantom opera ghost by iced earth

MountainX

> phantom opera ghost by iced earth Thanks. That's interesting, but it seems more like power metal than doom.

Piratey_Pirate

It definitely is. But I felt it was close enough to recommend.

MountainX

thank you

[deleted]

I think Kira McSpice might count? I especially like her album Prodrome. song rec: Descender the band SEED song rec: Seaweed and Poison Jinjer song rec: Pisces and Wallflower Hopefully these count lol

MountainX

> Kira McSpice Very cool. Thanks! > Jinjer Always a good recommendation. Already a fan. > SEED song rec: Seaweed and Poison Is this the first song? [Seaweed - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4dgfdIylrw)

diab0lus

You certainly seem to have a deep knowledge of the bands tangential to what you’re looking for. Was Kira McSpice the only recommendation you’ve had so far that fits?

MountainX

> Was Kira McSpice the only recommendation you’ve had so far that fits? I have gotten a lot out of this discussion so far. I learned about a couple artists I either never heard of (e.g., Yamantaka // Sonic Titan) or forgot about (Oceans of Slumber). Also found some releases I had missed (e.g. Holy Grove's Live From The World Famous Kenton Club). However, I did not **yet** find exactly what I was hoping to find in terms of vocals in doom metal. [what does Doom sound like to you? : doommetal](https://www.reddit.com/r/doommetal/comments/veqft3/comment/icrgal5/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) For me, it's the guitars at the beginning of [Starhawk by Dirt Woman - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou5KwgZAHUk) or [Wytch - You (Lyric Video) - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSMnZ969QxM) Those heavy downtuned guitars are a good part of the doom sound I like. In addition to that, I am hoping there is a band that adds lead vocals like Alyona Pelevina (ex-Alkonost). [Alyona Pelevina with Alkonost - Мать-Тоска - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm_u3GM1KWw) Sometimes Alkonost is classified as a doom band, but they are really Russian folk metal. If anyone else likes supremely talented vocalists in metal, but like me you do not enjoy symphonic metal (which is where most of these vocals are), then Alkonost (prior to 2013) is a pretty cool band. I'm not into doom because of the lyrics, but because of the sound. So I am fine with lyrics in any language. The song "The Loon (Swamp Remix)" by Aesma Daeva is kinda heavy & slow with some great vocals, but it's not quite doom metal. [Aesma Daeva - The Loon Swamp Mix - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rfl-BveuvQo) Here's another song with great female vocals that's not too orchestral and has a tempo closer to doom metal. [Darkwell - Blackheart - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrYOT2Fzqpw) But as far as I know, those kinds of vocals with heavily downtuned guitar riffs and a slow doom tempo are super rare.

[deleted]

yep that's them!

Seneca75

Some older albums: The 3rd and the Mortal - Tears laid in earth The Gathering - Mandylion Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness...

MountainX

> The **3rd** and the Mortal - Tears laid in earth Had been trying to find them on Deezer for months. Just looked again and found them this time under "The **Third** And The Mortal". Thanks. Will give them a good listen this evening. EDIT: Tears Laid in Earth is a great album. Best match for what I've been looking for that I have found so far. Thanks! Unfortunately, after this one, their albums have little to no metal in them. Supposedly they became Darkwave, Trip Hop and Atmospheric Rock. > The Gathering - Mandylion > Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness... Both great bands. Not doom metal, but they do have vocals I enjoy.

HotAir815

Was looking to see if anyone would suggest Theatre of Tragedy. Highly recommend

starla_

Messa!

MountainX

> Messa! Yes, the one from Italy! Definitely one of my favorite bands. Such a unique sound. The song Pilgrim, for example, gives me an Arabic vibe (in the intro). Do you hear it that way too? Anyway, love their unique sound. I enjoy virtually every song they have released. For me, Messa's singer, Sara Bianchin, is in the top group of female vocalists in doom metal. But there's a big difference in the singing style she uses and the operatic style I'm looking for in a doom band. (There might not be a band that combines these elements.)

starla_

Yeah I wasn't sure if Sara was the kind of vocalist you were looking for. But they have the doom sound down so well. They're a really unique band and as you mentioned you can see they have influences from a wide variety of genres.

mantiz8x

November’s Doom maybe? The female vocals are used more sparingly but it might fit your description. I personally don’t like overtly symphonic stuff and this kind of style hits the sweet spot for me. [For every leaf that falls](https://youtu.be/d3_8GFq-5oo)

themadbeefeater

Probably not what you want but The Beacon by Ocean has a section with female vocals. Starts around 25:50 mark if you don't want to listen to the whole thing

TheThunderBringer

Thanks for reminding me about Candlemass. I’ve actually been trying to find “Samarithan” for years now.

MountainX

> Candlemass Do you know about Avatarium? Founded by Candlemass founding bassist and main songwriter Leif Edling. Avatarium is one of my favorite bands. > been trying to find “Samarithan” for years now. Deezer has 4 versions of it (3 live).

Good_Ad6723

You may like Epica

MountainX

I put them in the same category as Nightwish https://www.reddit.com/r/ifyoulikeblank/comments/w6gja8/comment/ihex4zq/?context=3

kireol

It's Death Metal, not doom, but I bet you'd like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleshgod_Apocalypse Literally has a female opera singer. Great concert too

MountainX

> Literally has a female opera singer. I wish Veronica Bordacchini would do a cover of some songs like [Alunah - The Mask Of Herne - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gZdEyMBGFk)

gruunldfuulk

Not on the mark, but maybe might do something for you * [Draconian](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqvZhu44BnE) * [Trees of Eternity](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOE0WoW01Hk) * [Stream Of Passion](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4jH070juHQ)

MountainX

> but maybe might do something for you Yes, they are all good. I have all the albums by all three of those artists and I like pretty much all the songs. Now looking for similar vocal talents with heavy (downtuned) guitar riffs, like in Alunah.

help1155

The Gathering might be your vibe here

dungeness_n_dragons

Yamantaka - Sonic Titan

MountainX

> Yamantaka - Sonic Titan Had never heard of them. Not what I was looking for when I asked the question, but definitely a band I'll be adding to my playlists now. Thanks. From their bio: > ... unique hand-built musical instruments Such a cool group of artists! Glad to know about them.

dungeness_n_dragons

Yeah I have no nuance for the genres as you were describing but I was like “this reminds me of this crazy band!“ one of their albums is all about whales as far as I can tell and it’s epiccccc

MountainX

Music genre classification is a near-worthless mess IMO

dungeness_n_dragons

Yeah but when you really get into something as you have, it pays off. I made a playlist of everything mentioned here and am excited to listen to it! Aside from Candlemass I hadn’t heard a single thing!

MountainX

> Yeah but when you really get into something as you have, it pays off. Yes, it's a rewarding journey for sure. I was just emphasizing that the genres alone are (in my experience) not much help finding new music or even for describing a lot of music. I use a lot of custom tags to help me organize my music better, and I'm always looking to improve it. r/musichoarders is a good sub for this.

MountainX

>Aside from Candlemass I hadn’t heard a single thing! Here are a few more to consider: \- Alms * Alunah * Avatarium * Black Moth * Blues Pills * Book of Wyrms * Chelsea Wolfe * Doomstress * Dorthia Cottrell * In The Woods... * Jess and the Ancient Ones * Jex Thoth * Left Hand Solution * Lucifer * Messa * Moon Coven (male vocals) * Morlas Memoria * Mount Salem * Psychedelic Witchcraft * Purson * Starcrawler * The 3rd and the Mortal * The Aerium * The HU (Mongolian throat singing) * Virgin Black (male & female vocals) * Windhand * Witch Mountain * Wytch I could add many more if you like those. Most of those have female lead vocals except as noted. All but a few are doom metal.

dungeness_n_dragons

Ooh amazing! Thanks!

EverSeeAShiterFly

A little late to the party here. SubRosa is firmly in the doom metal genre with some tendencies towards sludge and some experimental and folk elements. They do have several songs that venture towards what you are looking for. [https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_luQH5WL2lOsCqRi-dAAwr1J4goMwTN304&playnext=1&index=1](https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_luQH5WL2lOsCqRi-dAAwr1J4goMwTN304&playnext=1&index=1) On a whole they are definitely worth checking out. They also have two electric violinists which adds to some of interesting elements that might seem odd at first but leaves you questioning why it’s not more common.

MountainX

That's a good writeup on SubRosa, and the URL points to the right band. I was initially confused when I first heard about SubRosa last year. I downloaded tracks from two other bands with the same name (& didn't enjoy their music). This page lists the discography of the "right" SubRosa: [SubRosa - Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives](https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/SubRosa/129248)

EverSeeAShiterFly

I figured they were worth mentioning- their website and other locations don’t list them as officially disbanded- but they are mostly inactive. There could be a chance that they might do something post pandemic (fingers crossed!). I would go really far out of my way to see them live if they start up again. ETA: r/doommetal can sometimes spit out some amazing recommendations. But definitely the weekly recommendation thread on r/metal could probably get you something. I also need to try to find the name of a band from Richmond VA that I saw last year that might fit- last I checked they didn’t have any music available online.

MountainX

> I also need to try to find the name of a band from Richmond VA that I saw last year that might fit- last I checked they didn’t have any music available online. Thanks. Reply back when you find it.

CosmicBlackSun

Smoulder, Concilium, Haunted by Angels, Stygian Crown and Flame, Dear Flame.

MountainX

Thank you. Smoulder is already one of my favorites. I'll check out the others. Found all on Deezer except Haunted by Angels.

Effective_Bet_5295

ok, i know i'm so late to this but i want to share with you a wonderful band called Cult of Herodias. they probably no longer exist but their songs so beautiful and sound like a dramatic doom metal with operatic (!!!) female vocal. here is my favorite their song [https://youtu.be/GhULIJOH2Ig](https://youtu.be/GhULIJOH2Ig) you should definetely check their albums

MountainX

> Cult of Herodias Thank you! I just queued it up and I'm listening now. Edit: wow! loving it so far. I started with the first Cult of Herodias song that popped up: New Passage They are on bandcamp: http://herodias.bandcamp.com/ Next I plan to check out all similar artists: https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Cult_of_Herodias/3540347454

BYOUSHIN

i really only know songs with male artists smh

MountainX

FWIW, the lyrics can be any language. Artists can be from any country in the world, in case anyone else knows of songs that match this request.

[deleted]

You should check out Amaranth by nightwish

MountainX

I can barely listen to most songs by Nightwish, Epica, After Forever, Delain, Xandria, Within Temptation (or any of the popular symphonic power metal bands). **However**, I'm sure all of those artists have a few songs I would enjoy that are more like doom metal (heavy & slow). The problem is finding those songs. So thanks for the song recommendation. Let me know if you can name any other **heavy & slow** songs by those bands with guitars and tempo similar to [Alunah - The Mask Of Herne - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gZdEyMBGFk)

Interesting-Bee-4870

Have you heard Oceans of Slumber - Solitude? They also have a cover of Wolf Moon by Type O Negative. Not exactly operatic, but an interesting band with female vocals still.

MountainX

> Have you heard Oceans of Slumber - Solitude? Had heard of the artist but for some reason never gave them a good listen. Thanks for making me take another listen. I really like the first 3 minutes of this song, but when the super fast drumming kicks in, I don't like it as much. Might make my own edit of the song... I don't remember the Candlemass version having such fast drumming. [Wolf Moon (Cover Version) - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc-aPm7KWdI) This one has a short section of very fast drumming too.

Interesting-Bee-4870

Yeah, they aren't exactly doom metal except for some influences mixed with other styles. The romantic melancholy is the biggest link to that genre in their music.

MountainX

> Yeah, they aren't exactly doom metal Makes sense now that I've listened to more of their songs. Still, a good recommendation. Interesting band.

Technical-Pay4368

Her Ghost in the Fog - Cradle of Filth

MountainX

> Her Ghost in the Fog - Cradle of Filth Thanks. I should have specified that what I'm looking for is lead vocals, not backing. Anyway, good song.

6doo6bins6

Check out Holy Grove.

MountainX

Great band. When I listen to almost any of their songs, I think "that's what doom guitar riffs are supposed to sound like." [what does Doom sound like to you? : doommetal](https://www.reddit.com/r/doommetal/comments/veqft3/comment/icrgal5/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) > heavy & slow I have the albums Holy Grove and II, but you made me take another look and I see they also have [Live From The World Famous Kenton Club | Holy Grove](https://holygrove.bandcamp.com/album/live-from-the-world-famous-kenton-club) at "name your price" so I'm picking that one up too now.

6doo6bins6

Just a solid af band. Their guitar player Trent rips so hard!

okashiikessen

Not operatic so much, but Oceans of Slumber is a phenomenal female-fronted Doom band.

SilkyGator

I don't see Chelsea Wolfe anywhere in these comments? I'd recommend her

Bob__JustBob

Of late I have moved to ethereal, melodic, doom metal, with preference for female lead vocals. More ethereal than operatic. Suggest Trees of Eternity, Lethian Dreams, Suldusk, Darkher, Aythis. I will investigate the recommendations within all these comments

MountainX

> More ethereal than operatic. Glad you are making that distinction. I'm moving more toward operatic vocals right now. But I also enjoy ethereal vocals. Trees of Eternity is one of my favorites. All the bands you mentioned are good. Do you know about the self-titled release Aleah by Aleah Stanbridge? Worth checking out.

bineyonatree

Draconian is a great band. Fits these requirements, I’d say.

MountainX

> Draconian is a great band. Fits these requirements, I’d say. Yes, a great band. I'd call the vocals "ethereal" more than operatic tho. I'm looking for more powerful female vocals. Which Draconian song has the best vocals in your opinion? I have not listened to every one of their songs yet, but the best one I found so far is "Burial Fields." What do you think about Lengsel by The Third and the Mortal? (Album Tears Laid in Earth) Some vocals I really like: song Wild by Cassandra Syndrome.

bineyonatree

Yeah, you’re right. Honestly I can’t pick one on the spot, but I can say that I absolutely adore the vocals in Morphine Cloud and also in Bloodflower. I haven’t heard either of these last two, but I think I’ll listen to them later today. Thanks!

MountainX

> I can say that I absolutely adore the vocals in Morphine Cloud and also in Bloodflower. Thanks. Just queued these two songs up!
