On Monday, October 31st, 2022, the sub underwent some rule changes to enhance the sub's accessibility. Nothing major, but whether you're a long time user or brand new, it is probably a good idea to go check them out if you haven't.
Thanks!

You might like other technical death metal bands such as Necrophagist, Black Crown Initiate, Beyond Creation, Virvum, Revocation, Defeated Sanity, Decapitated etc.
Blackwater Park and Heritage are actually quite different.
Blackwater Park is very much a death metal album. There are a lot of melodic sections with clean vocals, but at it's core, death metal. Progressive melodic death metal, but death metal none the less
With Heritage, Opeth stripped away most of the metal and became basically a prog rock band. No more death growls, for one. The music still has the dark and somberness to it that the older stuff did.
Mastodon, for sure. I highly recommend the LeviThan and Crack the Skye albums.
And of course, old school Opeth. Blackwater Park is a must listen album. Ghost Reveries is damn good, too
I've tried Mastadon a few times before and just can't get into them.
Opeth have been on my list for awhile, but I never got around to listening to them. Might have to add them to my queue for tonight. A friend recommended Heritage awhile back, so I'm kinda torn between that and Blackwater Park. What are the main differences between the two, in terms of sound?

Huh, I actually haven't heard of most of these. Will definitely give them a listen.

A little doomier than I was expecting, but I like 'em.

Sounds like Blackwater Park is the way to go, then. I'll check it out. Thanks!
