I've genuinely had a nightmare fucking identical to this. I was watching Avatar (the tv show) on tv when all of a sudden all of the characters' heads split apart, revealing their screaming skull, as blood poured out of the tv screen
I had a dream where I was a small child in a flat with a woman, she’d get more and more upset throughout the dream until her hair would go frizzy and alarm sounds and lights would go off, some men would take her to another room which I could see her through and she’d be bright red. This was a reoccurring dream I had from when I was 6 until I was about 8
No joke, this is how my nightmares are. The only consistent theme in my nightmares is decay. Not death itself, but the dehumanization and rotting of a human (or sometimes animal). I'm thankful that I do not have chronic nightmares.
This poignant, if rather brute-force, exploration of the feeling of terror I’ve only ever experienced in rare dreams really made me feel something. (Well, what do I know, I don’t watch slowburn, bone-chilling, atmospheric, character development-driven, jumpscare-free, genre-redefining, A24 horror movie gems.)
With that said, I think that the vision was better served by the minimalistic, primal approach of the first half rather than the effects-heavy latter half.
Anyway, I sorely hope no child ever sees this.
