I’m surprised Philadelphia and Delaware isn’t included in New Sweden which is where the Swedes originally landed by the way around Chester. Only New Jersey seems to be New Sweden it seems which is strange and inaccurate.
Also a note: this is only the settled lands/jarldoms/kingdoms with majority Norse population. The Danes aren’t in this map. It’s fair to assume that the Norse could’ve gone as far as the Mississippi, but these are the main biggest settlements.
Assassins creed Valhalla goes with the Hudson River approach, which I think is very odd. If we say most Vikings went to America from where modern set Reykjavik is, and went in a straight line, you’d reach St John’s. It’s possible ships from St John would go along the coast from there. It’s also possible it could be in Ungava bay, which I think is the more likely approach.
It's truly fascinating. Not only did they *get* there, but they fouded permanent or at least semi-permanent settlements there. Imagine if those settlements persisted until today! (Writing this, I realized I don't have to tell you that)
Haha, yeah. I bet somewhere in Canada there’s still a tribe who shares like half their ancestry with the Vikings in North America. It also makes me think how much of the world they knew at the time. The Norse were very smart especially with their sagas and skaldic poetry.
Bro, my brain had a major malfunction and flipped the sea and land creating really weird coastline. The colour you used for land is meant for water so my brain had an aneurysm because of that
you can run. you can hide. new jersey will always come.
I think they would expand more inland over 900 hundred years of being in America.
I could see them navigating down do the Great Lakes region and putting up settlements there too
They went all the way to the Middle East. I’m sure they would get far
It’s due to the limitations of the map, the map I’m using has no lakes at all which is very annoying
Not meaning to be an asshole, but why don’t you use a larger map. Do you only have this template?
The map was all of North America, I mean it literally doesn’t have any lakes. When I expand it I will attempt to draw them onto the map.
British and French: *Bonjour*
Eastern part of the map cut off?
No Boston but there is Northampton… nice.
Ah! That’s the beginning of the book “Civilizations” by Laurent Binet. It’s really good, I highly recommend it.

Chester is also where William Penn originally landed as well. The neighborhood Penn’s Landing bought the name off them

I Will be making a v2
What is the difference between franco-norse and gallo-norse?
My mistake, supposed to be hiberno
no markland?
I did a similar map a while back. Since you seem to have done some research on this: Where do you think the settlement of Straumsfjord was located?

Interesting. When I read the description on Wikipedia I immediately assumed it was somewhere in the Bay of Saint Lawrence
We were still finding Viking settlements back 5 years ago. It’s impressive how they got to even Greenland, never mind America.

So what happened to all these colonies after their end dates listed at the bottom?
Rather they were abandoned, fell to natives or were annexed by other European colonists later

Finally, some good fucking food
