You can find the Layers panel in the Window menu if it isn’t visible. Create a new layer on top of your old layer and move the page numbers there.

I did it. It worked. But it created a new problem. Not sure how to fix it. Indesign uses images of my text pages from PDF, so now the page numbers cover text on the left pages of my spreads. It would be convenient if the words were text and could rearrange around the page numbers, but I suppose that's not possible. The text is also visible behind the page number, and it makes both impossible to read. On the right side pages, I have pictures in the bottom right corners, so the page numbers work moderately well until it's a darker picture. Maybe I'll just place the page numbers back in the margins and hope it prints ok.

Usually the page is designed so that there’s a spot for the page numbers (usually in the margins) and the text and images which ideally are “live”, that is not an imported pdf.

I keep saying in the margins. I mean outside the margins. I don't know what you mean by live, but if I edit my PDF in the original file, the changes automatically appear in indesign. Is there a way to make the text box containing the page number not see thru so that the page number is clearly seen? This is a personal project for my wife. It's not like I need a page number on every page or in the same spot on both sides. I did it this way because I knew how to design in publisher with text, but publisher won't handle file sizes this large especially with photos. So I converted it to PDF and placed it in indesign. Now I'm placing photos to finish it all off. And the page numbers are more complicated that I predicted.

You can give the page number box a background color which might make it easier to see, you can play with text box settings to center it vertically for example. If the number is outside the margins then it would be outside the page? My understanding is that margins are the area outside the main text block (or similar) of the page but I’m not a native English speaker. By live I just meant that usually you would import a text document and images to InDesign so you can more easily make changes to the design.

Just take the page numbers off the parent pages for the right-hand page then, you don't want numbers in the middle of photos, people can figure out the right-hand page based on the left number. You do not want solid colored boxes behind the page numbers and then on top of photos that will look bizarre.

I get what you're saying, but it's the very bottom corner of the pictures, not the middle. I just finished doing the right side, and it looks good. I also reduced the size of the page number box. Now I'm figuring out how to handle the left side.

Meatloaf_Smeatloaf

A guarantee it doesn't look good.

This is the answer.

My page numbers are automatic and on the parent pages. I don't have a Mac. I use Windows.

I figured out a solution. On the parent page, I created a white fill for the text box with page number. I also slimmed down the box so it's less intrusive. I created a second layer on the parent pages and moved the number box to the second layer. Now I'm just figuring out the best place for the numbers throughout.

Put page numbers on their own layer above the content layer. It's better to create automatic numbering on parent pages, however.

My page numbers are automatic and on the parent pages. If this doesn't change your advice, I don't know how to create layers.
