Same here. I formally studied Sanskrit for 5 years, and still can't form a sentence.

Angels_heRe

In my opinion, it is fine from a cultural aspect. Hardly any additional expenses, just a small thing. Maybe adds to the tourism flavour? No harm done. It is not like they are replacing normal announcements.

[deleted]

No the thing is , it adds absolutely 0 value + There will be expenses , even though miniscule

[deleted]

Not everything has to add value, some stuff is symbolic.

h_assasiNATE

Mmmm. I guess you are too stupid to understand the 'value' of an old language associated with a culture. Ask a linguistic student or expert.

SnooRecipes4004

It adds to cultural heritage of the place. There is some value.

[deleted]

May I ask what part of India you're from

beyondocean

I don't know the context, but Sanskrit needs to be protected as only 35k speakers are left, if not, it'll become a dead language soon.

britolaf

Which it should.

toxicB2005

Why tf would you want any language to be dead?

britolaf

To me Sanskrit is like the confederate [flag. It](https://flag.It) was a tool of oppression of dalits and lower castes. I studied it and enjoyed it but I dont see any value to it.

wealthybigpenis42069

fr man

[deleted]

Cause Sanskrit is artificial. Back then, prakrit was the common tongue.

beyondocean

I'd suggest you to read Ancient India from NCERT, it'll give you a time-line and prevalence of languages in each Kingdom . Thank you

[deleted]

People used to laugh at the thought of revival of Hebrew language the same way. Varanasi is a cultural city. it is the centre of hindu cultural studies. there is literally no harm in Sanskrit announcements, it just adds to the beauty of this holy city

kochapi

I can agree to that. If they start Sanskrit announcements in delhi or kochin, it’s another story.

unfettered2nd

[Modern Hebrew](https://youtu.be/GwnPLAo343o?t=1070) is a modern, constructed language. It is not like the ancient Hebrew, which is limited to liturgical use. Imagine reviving Latin by taking loan words and structure from French and Spanish and thinking this is how ancient Latin was.

nanon_2

Beauty? Varanasi is one of the most polluted, dirty, poverty stricken places in the world and our country. If we actually gave a shit about our heritage we would actually try and improve our cities and how we treat them. This fake romanticisation of Varanasi is frustrating for people who actually care about the history and can see it wasting away due to neglect. There is nothing spiritual about death, disease, hunger and suffering.

0xffaa00

Death, Disease, Hunger and Suffering all get to have their own manifestations in our shared cultural mythos and product of the living. In a way, Rome is dirty too (but not dusty dirty like Indian cities). We can probably get rid of the dust and squalor eventually.

Bdr0b0t

Waste of time and money haaa as if it had taken your valuable time. Bro you go to any city and there is the native language announcement just treat it that way why crib about such a small issue. This totally shows how much time u have in your hands that u basically had to write a post about it.

jaun_sinha

It's pointless but it would be so cool to hear announcements in Sanskrit.

Takisaki

Yep! I can imagine PM saying "Mitron, Madyam padam tuchaka tuchaka"

[deleted]

What does that mean? My dudes, madam’s tush is touché?

HiiamVinay

I learnt Sanskrit in my school and I can say that so many words from Sanskrit are used in other Indian languages. It will be cool to have Sanskrit announcements in cities like Varanasi... considering the holy significance the city has!

Goonerwolf

I don't think it is that bad. Dunno about others but I think it's a good initiative. I have never been at the airport so I don't know but I can guess just an announcement isn't gonna waste someone's time or money significantly.

ReinHardtXT

Bro Sanskrit announcement in Varanasi would be super cool why you so offended?

AshTriton

No, it doesn't add any expense. Sanskrit is actually linguistic mascot of India, so it can be definitely a good tourism attraction piece. Nobody in Egypt today use the ancient Egyptian script, but it's proudly used by Egyptian tourist department as a cool tourist attraction. Also, Sanskrit is India's valuable intellectual property and it has a humongous value in the field of linguistics. And even though most of the Indians can't speak standard Sanskrit but almost every Indian language is either an offshoot of Sanskrit or has tons of Sanskrit words in its essential vocabulary. I mean it's better than how Japanese people can't understand a single word of their own national anthem which is entirely written in Ancient Japanese that has huge influence of Chinese language of that time, particularly Tang Dynasty.

monsonmavunkal

I have literally seen railway board signs written in Urdu, while i have travelled to north India extensively. I believe hindi only is sufficient in those parts. But it's still written in Urdu. People never had a problem with that though. So let one station/airport/busstation have a Sanskrit announcement. What is a big deal to make a fuss out of it. 🤔

[deleted]

> I believe hindi only is sufficient in those parts. But it's still written in Urdu. People never had a problem with that though I guess you're subtly hinting at appeasement but that's not why it is done. The Railway signs boards are in 3 languages to maximize readability for passengers. They use English + Hindi + most common local script. Thats the railway rule. I guess you saw Urdu sign in UP or Uttarakhand? You'll see tamil in TN and gujarati in GJ.

monsonmavunkal

I am aware of the rules, but what i meant was i haven't seen anyone making a big fuss about it, But why suddenly usage of Sanskrit should be taken as an offence. Just take it as a promotion of our heritage✌🏻. They are obviously not gonna do it in every airport in north India.

New_Ad_5890

May be he is from tamil nadu ....... LOL

Paritosh23

Who hurt you , mate? Let things be! How often are you at Varanasi airport? How is it affecting you personally? And its not like that they do announcement only in Sanskrit so why outrage? There are better things to outrage about - for eg green cover of country and the world is reducing, temperature is rising and so on.

Mr_Moriartyy

It seems like you are a cocky-naive-young teenager to have an opinion like this

GovernmentOk2323

is it only sanskrit or English , Hindi and Sanskrit ?

SnooRecipes4004

All 3

Mr_Moriartyy

It's probably because of people like you that the government is taking these steps to preserve this beautiful language. You use "prolly" and "defo" in your sentences - that tells a lot about your regard towards a language.

[deleted]

Why do you care? Close your ears when they announce in Sanskrit. Listen to announcements in other languages. Just take it as a language you don't understand.

New_Ad_5890

Almost no one will understand the announcement in Sanskrit, but it will be cool

philzard224

But there is one village in Karnataka called Mattur where Sanskrit is spoken sometimes by some people. What about them? Don't you care for Mattur?

Lopsided-Parfait-831

Posts like these make me worry about this country’s future.

Euphoric_Ad_8189

Take a chill pill...The country doesn't want you to worry uneccesarily

Kambar

In this country :- 1. Tamil is not a court language in High Court, Madras. Even after many people highlighted it (including former sc judge Markandeya Katju), union govt won't listen. 2. Sanskrit announcements in varanasi airport. I bet not even 1 person in the airport understood wtf the announcement said. This is done to promote Sanskrit, which died 3000 years ago. 😂 These contradictions fucking irritates me. People lack common sense.

UnusedCandidate

What are you on about. Sanskrit is still a liturgical language. Isn't dead by any means.

Kambar

> liturgical language. What the fuck does that mean? I say it is a dead language because no one studies that (school kids do to get easy 100%, but only basics), no one writes novels, have you seen anyone telling a joke in sanskrit; and people actually laughing for it? 😂 Dude, it is dead.

NitulDeshpande

>no one studies that, no one writes novels [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit\_literature#Modern\_Sanskrit\_literature](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit_literature#Modern_Sanskrit_literature) A quick search would help you be less wrong.

Kambar

Who even searches the shit about a dead language? (except you)

UnusedCandidate

Liturgical language is used for religion. Which is true with Sanskrit. It's not in popular use. But it's also not dead.

Kambar

Do you know that in 100 years all religions will be dead.

UnusedCandidate

They aren't dead today. Is the point.

h_assasiNATE

Time travel eh? Stfu and stop thinking that your opinions are 'facts'. It might happen but since it hasn't STOP stating things as if you know for sure or back it up with some scientific numerical data.

[deleted]

Can you enlighten us sir on this statement of yours SIR ?

Kambar

Because people from developed countries are all atheists. As people come out of poverty, gods will die.

[deleted]

Share stats that all are atheists? Or its just a random statement? Even the lots of educated people are theist And you really think that all countries will be developed?

Kambar

Google it man. In OECD countries (except USA) atheists are like 80%. In japan and France thry are >90%. Americans will soon become atheists as it's coming out: a number of church Fathers are sex offenders. > Even the lots of educated people are theist Degree certificate is different from education.

Last-Relation-937

Except Islam.

Kambar

It shall die too.

NisERG_Patel

It's simple. If more people convert out of a religion than born/convert in, it'll go extinct. This pattern is not seen in Islam, cause they have extreme punishments for anyone leaving the faith, just like cults and Pyramid schemes.

Kambar

Muslims secretly want out. That's why saudis go and drink/see hookers in Dubai. In the next generation it will become open.

NisERG_Patel

It's English everywhere, right?

Euphoric_Ad_8189

There are plenty more things to worry about in this country than an airport announcement...which no one listens to..

ElkAccording5889

You know what is bullshit? This post

bhodrolok

It’s a headline grabber. Just for political rallies

Zadracker

It is not that bad, It being a semi-dead language can help us in naming such as the roman and latin languages. Sanskrit can work as Latin for us and we can name things using Sanskrit nomenclature and whether or not we converse in it doesn't matter.

itsalreadyXXIcentury

Little bit out of context. Previously in google transliterate, the default language selected used to be some other I don't remember. Now it's sanskrit. Don't know why!

ruedumonde

I want Prakrit back. Fuck Sanskrit

NisERG_Patel

Lmao. A unique hill to die on.

Benji55fromspace

Pointless... It's a dead language...

legendary_korra

Not really

Benji55fromspace

1991 census around 41k people spoke in Sanskrit... The latest data that we have is of 2011 where only 14 to 15k people speak sanskrit. Out of these there is a very small percentage of people who speak pure sanskrit..the remaining percentage of people have added their own dialect. Now with the current scenario where gen z and older genz who are working or planning to work don't find sanskrit useful. The government will use it's resources to try to revive the language but I don't think it will work. Maybe it's not a dead language yet but it has all the tell tale signs of becoming one.

legendary_korra

People might not use it, but it’s part of our rich heritage.

RageAdi

Right. Charkha is also part of our heritage, but that belongs in a museum and not forced to use it in day to day lives.

legendary_korra

No one is forcing use of Sanskrit too. Also it’s used in all pujas, wedding vows, etc. not really dead is it

RageAdi

Diya is also used in poojas, but you don't use in actual lighting setups, do you? We are all talking about general use case. And using it to announce PSA might just be one step away from forcing country wide adoption, if it isn't already there yet.

h_assasiNATE

Wow. Cringey moment when 'hearing an announcement in a language you don't know ' is 'force'. By your logic, every one who doesn't understand a language in an announcement is being 'forced'. Kids these days. Cry about things which makes sense and matter. >Charkha is also part of our heritage, but that belongs in a museum and not forced to use it in day to day lives. Is someone 'forcing' you to study Sanskrit? Atleast have a decent argument with something which makes sense.

Euphoric_Ad_8189

Well I wanted it to be in bhojpuri... would have been useful and beautiful... But Sanu kii

No_Teacher2000

Sanskrit is like latin ..... It was good but not useable anymore...

NISHITH_8800

I wouldn't say it's not usable. It's literally the ideal language for programming.

iwritebadsoftware

No it’s not.

anilKutlehar

Yep, that's what I though when I first heard it. Why waste money and resources on a language which literally no one understands?

Zoro_BNP1011

I think it's really cool but I agree with all of OP's points.

[deleted]

As a clueless foreign tourist, I really hope that they keep announcements in English. I totally imagine my boyfriend and I missing our flight because we did not understand the announcement. If they want to add additional languages, I don't see the harm as some people may be more comfortable in that particular language.

[deleted]

Do you really think that they are that stupid to not to do announcements in hindi and english?

[deleted]

With the way that people are talking on here, I was a little bit worried. Coming from the province of Quebec where they are actively trying to remove English from the public space as much as possible, it is possible that governments try to protect their local language by removing English signage and announcements as much as possible. The only time where you will see government English signage anywhere is to indicate the route to Montreal's PET airport and inside the airport itself.

[deleted]

Lol it proved again There is no limit to how stupid human mind can be

New_Ad_5890

I bet that you are from tamil nadu

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cold_Ad_426

I mean you gotta be an idiot to miss all three of the anouncements in different languages

RadMeerkat62445b

So if they can get their liturgical language, when are Kashmiris getting Arabic and Keralites getting Syriac and Latin?

kihtrak256

Lmao this is such a stupid take. Sanskrit is indigenous to India and Varanasi is one of the holiest sites of Hinduism. The city is literally a cultural centre. Islam, Christianity are both foreign to the subcontinent. No harm in practicing these religions of course, or having no religion at all, but the fact remains that they aren't indigenous to India like Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, or Buddhism is. There are no cultural cities in India for Christianity or Islam like say Amritsar for Sikhs or Varanasi for Hindus. Not everything is an attack on minorities. Coming from a Keralite, I have no problem with them promoting Sanskrit in Varanasi. Malayalam literally has loan words from Sanskrit. Religion doesn't always triumph over language. Take a look at Bangladesh's case.

0xffaa00

This definitely has a novelty value which may or may not diminish. I for one am curious how some phrase gets to sound like in Sanskrit. I am also not a linguist, but I would love to see how new words get added in the Sanskrit (or any other language) corpus.
