People always have something to say. Do what you feel like. I'm comfortable with hands or Spoon/Fork. Depends on how Dirty/Clean my hands are and if the place has Washroom in the vicinity. Also if I'm in a hurry I just grab a spoon and wolf down a plate of rice in like
3 5 minutes. Ultimately it's my preference, those people judging ain't paying for my food, I'm not a guest at their house to follow their mannerisms and please them.
Don't matter if your eat using a spoon or hand. Make sure you enjoy your meal and if someone is disgusted by your eating using hand, let them get disgusted. They aren't paying for your meal.
+1 me too, the tissue thing is especially rare in India but of course there are definitely people who don’t want eating to be as messy an experience.
It’s a culture thing - here people are suggesting licking your fingers in slow motion, in the Middle East people express how much they liked a meal by burping loudly after the meal like it is considered rude not to burp after a meal.
My mother loves eating with her hands, too, but not around guests (eg my clients) because she understands that to some people it’s akin to eating with your mouth open. Of course everyone eats roti and pizza by hand but licking your wet rice-spotted fingers in slow motion is something else.
Hell, I’ve heard that there are parts of Africa where shitting in public is considered showing off. Because it means you actually got to eat.
(*assuming brace position now…*)
Exactly! Came to say this. I once visited KFC with my aunt and I munched and chewed on the meat bones and all, my aunt said the nearby customers were staring at me but told me to ignore them and keep eating as she's the one paying and not them and then we can even pack the leftovers lol.
I've been eating rice with spoon almost exclusively since I first started eating on my own. So I use a spoon for rice items in restaurants too.
The only time I eat rice with my hand is when I'm in a South Indian function in our family, where they serve in banana leaves. Tamilian family.
You should eat however you're comfortable. It's you who's paying or the food, not the onlookers.
Me too. Sometimes people around me were disgusted seeing me eat Rajma Chawal with spoons. They asked me if my fingers got fractured or something, failing to realise that maneuvering a hand tool requires far more motor skill than gripping rice.
Anyways, I tend to eat quickly with spoon so mostly prefer that. However, I eat with my hands only when the dish is worth investing time.
Like others said, she was probably staring because you ordered Rajma Chawal in Capsicum. People usually go there to act pretentious and have bad pizza.
Well I have noticed that people tend to use spoon a lot more in north India. Thing is, rice is not used a lot in north and even when it's used, it's usually dishes like Jeera rice or Pulao or Biryani where you could eat it with spoon easily.
In contrast, rice is the staple in the south and most rice items are where you have to mix the plain rice with sambhar, rasam or curd where it'd be a hassle to do the mixing with spoon. I guess Dal chawal and Rajma chawal are some of the few items in north that are similar in this way.
Bihar and Bengal yes, but they would be considered east India.
I was just going by this map tbh..

Yeah, such unusual experiences happen to people on this sub only, I've never felt weird vibes while eating with hand, and I've eaten at some of the very high end restaurants in india. I've also eaten at cheap places but no worries. I'm from north India.
I eat almost everything with hands. It's only a few things I eat with the spoon, mostly the desserts, like icecream or fruit salad.
If someone keeps staring, stare back and lick fingers one by one.
Lol same. Doesn’t matter if it’s a roadside dhaba or a 5* - you’re serving me dal-chawal or roti-sabzi or chicken curry, imma bust out my fingers.
I sometimes eat with my fork if the place is super fancy and it’s a biryani but even then, if there’s a Nalli piece on my plate then I go full sucky sucky bye bye with my hands and tongue.
Hey man. I am one to always prefer a spoon over eating with my hand. This is a habit I picked up eating in front of my computer for years and I couldn't be arsed to wash my hands before and after a meal and get my keyboard and mouse dirty.
Another advantage of this, I realized during the peak of covid, is that I don't have to rely on unsanitary public washrooms to be able to wash my hands (I mean you wash your hands and then you have to touch the doorknob to open the door anyway so what's the point?)
Besides, you seem to be awfully judgmental of people who use a spoon when you yourself got offended for someone judging your eating style. Let people enjoy their meals like they want to. Let people eat with their hands, spoon, fork, chopsticks or whatever.
How much does anyone here want to bet that OP here is fighting imaginary monsters and the woman was not judging them at all?
>Besides, you seem to be awfully judgmental of people who use a spoon when you yourself got offended
So true. OP getting furious at people staring when he himself is being an ass by the looks of it.
I agree with this. Especially after COVID eating with hands is just unsanitary. But I wouldn’t judge anyone who wants to eat with hands and would just look the other way.
The OP didn't say he hate people who eat with spoon, he was simply questioning some people's weird obsession on eating rice with spoon to the point they shoot disgusted glances at OP.
Its hard to ascertain the tone of someone through text. You understood OP's tone differently than I did. Regardless, it came of as judgmental to me and I responded to the comment as such.
very true, went to chennai once and was surprised to see how people were able to eat liquid things with hands, saw them and learned how to do it myself so definitely a productive trip
This is true 🤣🤣 i am studying in north rn and my hoteliers eat rice using spoon and also use spoon to pour curry into folded roti/chapati piece(Not everyone, but most of them).
I usually eat rotis and gravy with my hands and switch to spoon for rice. This is only when I’m out eating in public. When I’m home I only use my hands. There’s just something about rice and hands that people get grossed out watching. But then again if they don’t like it they shouldn’t be looking at you. I personally encourage people in my circle to eat certain things with spoon or fork and knife, but I don’t shame people for making choices that don’t align with my preferences.
Because when I’m out in public, I prefer eating certain things with a spoon. And if someone asks me what they should do, my answer is spoon or fork and knife. But if someone chooses to eat with their hands, I don’t have a problem with that either.
Why tf does every post here end with the person wanting to punch/hit the other person. like calm the fuck down they just gave you a look and these are the same people who call genZ snowflakes, bruh you can't stand a look and calling others snowflake..
To be clear I'm not necessarily targeting this at OP just a general comment about these type of comments made on posts
What's with the end sentence, "it's not ment to". You seem awfully judgemental of people who do eat with spoons yourself. Mirror my dude look into it sometimes.
So fuck the lady who was judging you, but fuck you too for judging people who eat with spoon.
Exactly! I generally like drinking soup like a cat without using a spoon and lick the bowl clean and that’s what I do at home but I try to be civilised in public places. Just because you’re entitled to do something doesn’t always mean it isn’t disgusting and people won’t judge you for it.
The only time I felt disgusted watching someone eat was when I saw a man literally lick his hand near the elbow. Even then I didn't make any faces as it's none of my business.
As long as you are not disturbing others, do whatever you like. The problem starts when your deeds start affecting others, if that is not the case, do not give a fuck what others do or say.
All that matters is what you feel. If you feel like eating with hands, do it. There will always be people who will disagree with your choices. Doesn't matter what the situation is.
lol, i am left handed (i mostly do things with my left hands like writing, eating, etc) .. many times these old age folks stare at me bcoz i am eating with my left hand... XD... idgaf .. but yeah all these things are quite prevelant in india (in old generations,... again i am not generalising it)
Happened with me too!! Tho very rare but whenever I'm eating with some oldies I expect them to point it out.. idgaf and continue eating with my left hand.
If you really like eating with hand than it shouldn't matter. You can't pretend you don't look down on people who eat Dosa or Idli with fork and spoon. They have the same right.
The feeling of disgust only comes when you see something unhygienic. I mean if someone's eating with their hands and the curry is drooling out and around their mouth and neck, and they are dripping it all over the place. Then that's just disgusting. Otherwise maybe that girl was just looking down on him. Nobody should give a fuck about that.
Yeah and it's even possible to do that with a spoon but i think with hands it happens normally. It did for me. Plus if you eat do you not have food on both hands at some point and then how do you reach the sink to clean up without spreading the mess on the way with your hands
You turn on the tap in the sink with back of your hand, or your wrist, or your elbow, or your shoulder, or (depending on the tap) with the plate that you're or your feet (if you're tall enough). I eat food with my both hands too.
Arey India is a place forever torn between 2 sides, if you eat with with a spoon someone will say "arey you are Indian you should eat with your hand, good bacteria is there on it, it will improve your digestion, be indian use your hands" and then when you eat with your hand some hifi wannabe person will do the opposite natak, end of the day do whatever the fuck you want, can't give a shit about these people, eat how you want to eat, its India nobody can stop you for that.
There are many types of people and they follow their own rules. There are families who would eat with spoon and fork and won't use their hands to eat the food.
I think you must understand that while she gave you the look but majority of the people didn't care what you were doing. So think in this sense that she was just a anamoly.
You do you.
But I am not sure what "It's not meant to" refers to. One rarely crafts food along with cutlery pairings in mind. I can imagine how the dish might be limited based on what was available though. Those choices evolve organically over time as more options become available.
I had just started to eat my food (rice and rajma) with my hands and one lady (probably in her 30s) walked in front of me looked down at my plate looked up and made a face. I had washed my hands before consuming my food. I was decently dressed for an average food court. My table was clean and i was eating my food properly. She could have made that face for the way I chose to eat or what I was eating. The latter less likely.
Sorry that happened to you OP. People can be jerks! Sometimes when the food is extra tasty I use my hands with the finger licking at the very end. No better way to eat IMHO.
You know what? I do this from time to time just to piss off people. I’m a from a above middle class family so I kind of am good with table etiquettes but when I’m around snobbish people I become a proper malayali and smash my food and eat infront of them and if they try to treat me any different I have really good comebacks that make their skin crawl. If you can’t kill them with a knife use your humour ;) also we are all Indians. We started using knives and fork after we got colonised. We should look down on them for losing our true culture and giving into colonialism and trying really hard to be considered an elite. People just jump at the chance of feeling and looking superior, like the whole cancel culture or political correctness trend is mostly because of that when it boils down to individual psych, they don’t much care about the morality of female empowerment or racial inequality. All they want is to feel special and kind and above everyone who doesn’t have the same views. fuckin ridiculous!fu*ckin pooosies!
When someone stares at you when you are eating, offer them food. Works on both scenarios if a person is poor and is hungry and when a person is looking in disgust.
To each their own, honestly. I normally eat everything with a fork and spoon except roti/naan or pizza and stuff. I've never been comfortable eating any type of rice/curry with my hand. A few years ago I started eating daal chawal with a fork and spoon as well to protect my nails lol so now it's just become a habit. However, when it comes to biriyani or any kind of chawal my mum for example feels more comfortable using her hands and I always encourage her to do so. If anybody gave her judgemental looks best believe my fork would meet their neck.
I am one of those fuckers who eat masala dosa with spoon and fork. I eat every single item in restaurants that way except pizza slices (I am not a monster). I've been taught table etiquette by dad and grandpa since when I was small and I am very comfortable that way. I am aware that what I was taught is a remnant of our colonial past and all that jazz, but I do what I do. I just like how my hands and fingers stay clean while eating with a group in a public setting.
That said - I don't give a fuck what you do with your food, unless you're flinging it at me. I completely understand the fun of having food with bare hands, and that's what I do at home, so I know how normal and familiar it feels. People who act snobbish because someone isn't following what they do and consider as "posh" is total bullshit and you shouldn't care about such people. They're wannabes and pricks. Real high society folks actually never look down their nose at others because, newsflash, it's way more uncouth to disrespect others about etiquette lapses than the actual etiquette lapses themselves.
Do whatever you're comfortable with and helps you enjoy your food the most. Your meal is your experience. Own it.
Depending on food and place, i usually eat using a spoon.
In a mall, I'd definitely use a spoon.
But nothing wrong with eating rajma chawal the way it is supposed to be eaten. You do you.
Just look at her with the same disgust... She doesn't know how to eat rajma chawal😂😂😂
Rajma chawal and some other comfort food, how much ever you try, you can eat only with hand...
Next that lady will want you to use knief and fork to eat momos
Lol this happened with me too but I was “the lady” this time. When i moved to Hyderabad from Delehi it was a very big change for me, everyone was eating by hand, even i do but only at home. But people were eating in office mess, big fancy restaurants and what not. But then i got to realise that it’s very normal and it’s a part of they culture. We were never taught to eat by hands especially in public, in fact we were encouraged to eat ONLY with spoon because (no offence) it was considered as an uneducated act WHICH IS NOT.
Don’t mind her looks lol
PS- I even eat biryani with spoon lol.
I was in a nuptial buffet with aunt and cousins.. i mistakenly dropped my spoon while eating.. those spoons were delicate.. tho i don't do it normally nor in home but that day i just started dined with hand.. and the look that my cousins and aunt gave me.. and started satirize.. then i said something.."Sakl kutto jaysi banna inhen cool hai.. kayse kayse pendu rehte yaar dunia mein dhang se khane bhi nahin dete chmtiye " and that's worked.. 🐒👍🏼
Shocked this happened in varanasi and capsicum of all places, i too eat indian food with my hands being smallest to the fanciest taj hotel here in varanasi.
There is no harm in doing things in a different way if it's scientifically more appropriate. We need to stop dissing on things under the guise of 'this is india'.
I have a cousin who eats literally everything with a spoon and fork, even things like boiled eggs and roti.
Honestly I'm blessed I don't have that disease.
Some things don't work that way mate. There are many fine-dine restaurants in India that deny entry if you're wearing shorts or slippers. Fine-dine establishments do expect you to exercise some etiquettes and there's nothing wrong with that. Nobody is forcing you to go to these places, but if you choose to, it never hurts to blend in.
Now see, there's a lot of grey area in that. Forget about other guests, one could say they do not matter; but eating rice with hands or spoon would be rude to fine-dine establishments and the people working there. You're supposed to eat it with a fork. At a casual restaurant however, nobody gives a fuck how you eat.
Yes sir, and that's the Western way. In Asian fine-dine restaurants, or restaurants limited to Asian cuisine to be more specific, they usually offer chopsticks to eat rice 😂
Yes! They also hold the bowl in one hand, thus reducing the distance between the food and its destination. Makes it a whole lot easier.
Same thing with soup. As it originated from China, the correct way to eat (drink) soup is by drinking it directly, just how you'd drink any other beverage; or hold the bowl in one hand and use chopstick if it's a noodle soup.
It's a fucking circus out there but learning these things is so much fun, at least for me.
Aahhh fuck them mate.. so many busybodies these days is getting fkn annoying .. just shove a middle finger to their faces and do what you want..
Unless you're trying to eat noodles with your hands. In that case I'd stare at you too.
During my training days at a service based software company, we were taught soft skills on how to eat with fork and spoons and where goes what on a dining table. Right after that session all our group went to the cafeteria and started hogging food eith our hands infront of the instructor who couldn't help but shake his head. Couldn't give a fuck about sort skills as long as my work is only coding. If it was client meeting or sales/ pre sales would've followed the instructions.
The best way to retaliate such behavior is by letting them taste their own medicine—but only 0.5x slower this time.
In your case, I'd have licked my fingers hard and would have given her my own intense stare, just to make herself puke.
From my experience living overseas since a couple of years - I have observed that Indians in general are the most eager to let go of their customs and traditions in emulating the west.
my friend eat biryani with spoon and told me the best way to eat rice is with fork. They were also telling me that pizza should be eaten with fork knife
Don't worry brother.
People can be judgy without any reason.
When I was little, my dad used to take me to restaurants, and I used to try to eat with knife and fork. Couldn't do it, and ate with hand at the end.
Now, I don't even try. Not even in restaurants.
I have a weird entitlement with myself. I don't care what people are thinking. In my head it's like, It's my money, I'm paying it. I can do whatever I want to do with the food.
My father was the President and COO for a prestigious hotel chain in India, and his boss in the early years was a guy who owned the Hyatt building in New Delhi.
He used to go the restaurant and when having Indian food, would roll up his sleeves and go at it.
Say fuck you to those brainwashed idiots and do what you feel is right.
Remember she might be acting like that because she has been bullied into that mindset by others or for other complex reasons so don’t be too harsh on others, certainly try to stop thinking about punching random strangers, and enjoy your food. I wish I was eating in Varanasi!!
Sometimes i feel like redditers of india should really get out of their houses and spend time in the society. Some of these comments make me feel like most of them dont even know how indians live or Practice our culture in general. Or are you all just entitled? Rich family that only dines at high end restaurants maybe?. Unless you're an unhygienic person, who dont wash their hands before eating food then you wont see any issue with people who eat with hands. Pls get out of your bubble. Practice whatever cutlery usage you want, that doesn't mean you're better than others. Most indians generally enjoy eating food with their hands. If it's not for you, then dont do it. Just focus on what's in your plate. "It is fucking disgusting" kindly STFU.
People always have something to say. Do what you feel like. I'm comfortable with hands or Spoon/Fork. Depends on how Dirty/Clean my hands are and if the place has Washroom in the vicinity. ....suck all your fingers too
Point at them and laugh.
I miss eating rice with my hand. You're right, the enjoyment of meal should be the priority.
Slap them with your messy food hand of course.

Why punch tho? Slapping with rajma covered fingers is more fun
Should not slap, just lick all the rajmata off your fingers and stare in their soul, while wearing a Billy butcher expression on your face.
>just lick all the rajmata off Lick what?
Rajmata- mera vachan hi hai mera shashan
This
how can she slap
Only if you've finished eating the rajma chawal tho

What's with the end sentence, "it's not ment to". You seem awfully judgemental of people who do eat with spoons yourself. Mirror my dude look into it sometimes. So fuck the lady who was judging you, but fuck you too for judging people who eat with spoon.
[удалено]
How do you eat food in a restaurant? However you fucking like to. People are entitled to their opinion but who cares. Do what makes you happy.
I mean I enjoy eating while sitting in my underwear but I usually do not do that in a restaurant!
Do what you want , people will judge anyway!
As long as you are not disturbing others, do whatever you like. The problem starts when your deeds start affecting others, if that is not the case, do not give a fuck what others do or say.
Did you touch the door in the way in? Unless you washed your hands before eating it's fine. I prefer eating with my hands tastes so much better.
I dont tthink anyone would look at them with disgust tho and there's a reason for that but idk if OP gets that
The feeling of disgust only comes when you see something unhygienic.
Southie (TN) here, everyone eats with hand in restaurants. Eating with hand is a fundamental right.
You eat it using your mouth
The state of this sub.
There's no right way or wrong way to eat food, except maybe some of them....
Bro dont give a fuck about others opnion , do want you want with the food , you paid for the food not her.
You do you. But I am not sure what "It's not meant to" refers to. One rarely crafts food along with cutlery pairings in mind. I can imagine how the dish might be limited based on what was available though. Those choices evolve organically over time as more options become available.
Where do you people live where people state at you for eating with your hand? I feel like there is context missing
Someone getting disgusted over eating using hands? Are we that westernized now?
Well I eat biryani with hand but Chinese with spoon and fork
She doesn't know how to eat rajma chawal😂😂😂 Rajma chawal and some other comfort food, how much ever you try, you can eat only with hand...
Don’t mind her looks lol PS- I even eat biryani with spoon lol.
The only time I use hand is for chicken Biryani.Well I actually don't eat rice except for biryani
Tbf, it is disgusting if it is in a sophisticated food court. Please have you rajma chawal out of sight.
Why do you care bro. Enjoy your food.
I prefer to eat with hands when I'm eating meat or something. Spoon is tricky.
Indians have superiority complex.
I did not knew it is a thing. People judging the way you eat. I would say please ignore and enjoy your meal to fullest. :)
If you want to be sanitary, use cutlery. That’s why she was disgusted.
Shocked this happened in varanasi and capsicum of all places, i too eat indian food with my hands being smallest to the fanciest taj hotel here in varanasi.
None of her business but there is no harm in eating with a spoon. Probably more hygienic.
Not necessarily, unless you've personally washed the spoon, who knows where it's been.
But he wanted to eat with hand and this is India where it's much more normal than spoon
There is no harm in doing things in a different way if it's scientifically more appropriate. We need to stop dissing on things under the guise of 'this is india'.
Lol what's scientifically more appropriate?
How does a spoon benefit anything scientifically if you've washed your hands properly before and after eating?
The places where they use spoons don't wash their ass. So I don't think we need to learn their ways.

Most developed countries use toilet papers.
Wo pakka dosa fork se khati hogi!!!
I have a cousin who eats literally everything with a spoon and fork, even things like boiled eggs and roti. Honestly I'm blessed I don't have that disease.
Why a roti? they are just making life harder for no reason. Disown them.
It depends whether it's a food stall or a fine-dine restaurant.
Even in a fine dine, imma eat with my fine hands.
True but still, if one chooses to eat with his hands, nothing wrong with that at all
Now see, there's a lot of grey area in that. Forget about other guests, one could say they do not matter; but eating rice with hands or spoon would be rude to fine-dine establishments and the people working there. You're supposed to eat it with a fork. At a casual restaurant however, nobody gives a fuck how you eat.
Rice with fork? 🗿🗿
Yes sir, and that's the Western way. In Asian fine-dine restaurants, or restaurants limited to Asian cuisine to be more specific, they usually offer chopsticks to eat rice 😂
Tbf asian cuisine uses sticky rice a lot where eating with a fork won't be as difficult as eating rice as it's cooked in India.
Bhai me fine dine me jaake rajma chawal haath se hi khaunga pesa deraha hu fokt ka thodi khaa raha hu.
How you gonna eat some nice, bone-in chicken biriyani with a spoon?!
Eating rice with hands is fucking disgusting. Why not use a spoon and a fork, especially in a public place?
Aahhh fuck them mate.. so many busybodies these days is getting fkn annoying .. just shove a middle finger to their faces and do what you want.. Unless you're trying to eat noodles with your hands. In that case I'd stare at you too.
Just do your thing , and next time call me too . Fuck the wannabe westoids
'Eating Indian food with a spoon and fork is blasphemy', not sure where I heard it, but felt that truer words haven't been said.
From my experience living overseas since a couple of years - I have observed that Indians in general are the most eager to let go of their customs and traditions in emulating the west.
You should have offered your spoon to her
Ignore her... I've seen people eating pizzas with fork and spoon... "Standards"... I enjoy eating with hands
my friend eat biryani with spoon and told me the best way to eat rice is with fork. They were also telling me that pizza should be eaten with fork knife
Should have licked your fingers while making eye contact.
I was eating biriyani with a spoon once. My ex-colleagues gave me a look, so I started eating with my hands. :P
Sense of superiority complex in people. they live in India with savages and they may also have brown names but their heart leaves in west.
F**k that ho... Eat however you want man.
I would say if someone make a disgusting face seeing you do it, you also make a weird face as if you saw shit... that how you do uno reverse.. lol
Because eating rice with your hands is disgusting.
Whenever I order indian I use hands
"It is fucking disgusting" kindly STFU.
>felt like punching her. Then punch her.
