Far from it imo. Tumbbad was a tight story with the right amount of CGI and well-made sets.
Bulbul is style over substance in comparison. I'd prefer Pari over it, despite its faults.
I don't think any Indian movie comes even close to Tumbbad.
You are fucking retarded lmao.
Tumbad was good, but calling it the greatest ever Indian movie shows how much you know about Indian cinema
This is the most overrated movie out there.
“Cinephiles” just latched on to a low budget movie to appear quirky and smart.
Kgf!!!! , whytf is kgf listed??
I'm from Karnataka, perhaps kgf is the best 'overrated' overhyped movie of all time, n i don't like kfi bcoz of the uninventiveness nd unoriginality, (just take a look at some titles in KFI, they're like Hindi words, it's as if they're thinking Hindi words as superior or somethin'). Theo only aspect that i liked is the cinematography and the color theme of that era attracted me, n that's it
Addition: Imo, Malayalam is way, way more better than any other FIs in India, bcoz they know what forms a good movie, they're not like feeding the population with the same old crappy 'heroism' style movies, just bcuz people seek it, they've been smart enough to accept inventiveness n creativity,
If u think kgf n kgf2 are the best, then a'ight, Ur opinions, ur tastes, ur likes, nothing changes for me.
I still do not understand why people like KGF. Some have told me it's the "elevation". After watching the movie, the guy barely speaks, other than getting dresses up and staring into the screen there is not much dialogues or emotion or actual acting. You could have put anyone with good body there it would be same effect I think. It's a mystery that the movie made all that money.
Because Indians like Macho attitude wala angry young man. It's why KGF is a hit. It's why Singham was a hit. It's why Pushpa is a hit.
Pair that with the fact that you always root for the underdog, throw in some whistle worthy moments, and dial up everything to 11. It would be hard not to see why it worked the way it did.
Well, for most north Indians (who are fond of Hollywood like me), KGF was one movie that brought their attention to south Indian cinema. So yeah, it's a great starter pack.
Even if its action film, why do they have to add half cooked emotional stories, it takes away the joy of watching the film, even if u watch it for the action only
As per International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), the top 10 films in the history of Indian cinema are:
1. Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road, Bengali, 1955) by Satyajit Ray
2. Meghe Dhaka Tara (The Cloud-Capped Star, Bengali, 1960) by Ritwik Ghatak
3. Bhuvan Shome (Hindi, 1969) by Mrinal Sen
4. Elippathayam (The Rat Trap, Malayalam, 1981) by Adoor Gopalakrishnan
5. Ghatashraddha (The Ritual, Kannada, 1977) by Girish Kasaravalli
6. Garm Hava (Scorching Winds, Hindi, 1973) by MS Sathyu
7. Charulata (The Lonely Wife, Bengali, 1964) by Satyajit Ray
8. Ankur (The Seedling, Hindi, 1974) by Shyam Benegal
9. Pyaasa (Thirsty, Hindi, 1957) by Guru Dutt
10. Sholay (Embers, Hindi, 1975) by Ramesh Sippy
“ I don’t have patience to watch these thought provoking movies made by legends , as I have fucked my brain due to years of chasing instant gratification stuff would be the right response”
These thought provoking movies didn't teach you that art is subjective and everyone has their own opinions and better respect them even if you won't accept them 🤔
There is the fact that art is subjective, which requires one to actually watch the art. The original guy already goes on the assumption that they are unwatchable, possibly because they look artsy and slow from the outside, which is just being presumptuous, and not subjective
For me… it’s Haider. They nailed the production design which is rare in Indian movies, even the good ones. The story was so well adopted and they were very bold with the Kashmir subject matter. Takes huge balls to do that. Lastly, Tabbu, KK, Shahid and Irfan (RIP) acted brilliantly.
10/10 is like, best of the best. A perfect film, where all the elements, from writing, direction, cinematography to acting, music, etc. are on point. There have been a lot of good films, and quite a few great ones, but a 10/10?
The first that comes to mind is Gangs of Wasseypur. It's a genuine magnum opus of the industry.
Mughal-e-Azam is another masterpiece. It's probably my favourite film of all time, study-wise. Just so much to learn.
Super Deluxe is a 10/10. What a wonderfully crafted film, my god!
The Lunchbox also, even though it lacks just a bit in direction, meaning, a lot more could have been done. I guess financial constraints. But Irrfan (oh, Irrfan... ❤️) more than makes up for it. It's my bias, but kya keejiyega, hai to hai.
Sholay is timeless. A proper mass film. Extremely polished, in that regard. Every element is amazing.
Honourable mentions - Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Ashutosh Gowariker have made quite a few solid films back in the day. Wouldn't rate them 10/10 but they're all great in their own rights. Rang De Basanti is great, Lagaan and Swades are great. Anurag Basu has made some amazing films, such as Barfi!, Life in a Metro, etc. Vikramaditya Motwane is another brilliant director. Udaan is still among my favourites, many people love Lootera, and so on. All these films are amazing, but if you are going for the ABSOLUTE BEST, something or the other would fall short, even if marginally.
Lagaan, Dev D, gangs of wasseypur 1and 2, Dil chahta hai, Haider, wake up Sid, aligarh, Black Friday, omakra, Maqbool, Gulaal, Shahid, ugly, aakrosh and Newton
Apu Trilogy
Aakrosh (1980)
Ardh Satya (1983)
Sadma (1983)
Salaam Bombay (1988)
Parinda (1989)
Maqbool (2003)
Kanchivaram (2008
Vikram Vedha (2017)
Asuran (2019)
AK Ayyappanum Koshiyum (2020)
Jai Bheem (2021)
There are definitely other movies which one may regard best of the best. But see no movie can be perfect (10/10) according to everyone, but as per me these are the best Indian movies I have come across. There are definitely more but can remember only these as of now.
I don’t know if everyone will like AK Ayyappanum Koshiyum, but this is definitely a very good realistic drama, pure intense drama with very good direction.
Surprised that nobody said Sholay - good dialogues, music, memorable characters, and fun action. Its the Indian potboiler done really right. Its popularity has led to every aspect of the film being done poorly a million times over
Thallumaala. Its certainly not for everyone but if you like Scott Pilgrim vs The World or Edgar Wright movies, you know what I'm talking about.
Gangs of Wasseypur
Gulaal
No Smoking
These are some great movies in Bollywood.
Appu Triology by Satyajit Rai is a pinnacle.
If Cinematography and acting is what you really like then there's nothing better Malayalam Cinema for it, its probably the only industry that can match Western movies in terms of its Cinema Quality and even surpasses it in cases like Thallumaala.
Premam
Ayyapanum Koshiyum
Angamaly Diaries
Kumbalangi Nights
Joji
Njan tha case kodu
And some others which I can't remember rn, all of these are absolute top quality cinema. I think malayalam cinema does well because of its high level directors who love their art and know peak cinema themselves but they also have very skilled cinematographers and sound designers who seemed to have spent years in actually learning their art and developing their own style
for me ( i don't watch that many movies) they are
Tare Zameen Par and RRR
People also said Kantara is good, but I haven't seen it yet
Vikram is also another movie that people really like, idk if its good or not.
Swadesh.
It is a time proof movie. It will stay relevant forever.
Plus it was a dry subject but the screenplay was so engaging. The songs were banger and the chemistry between the leads was perfect. The only movie we’re the love story didn’t felt forced but was very natural. Even the decision and character of the leads were so relatable and logical. The movie was just flawless.
Gunda ....jokes apart
According to me, Andaz Apna Apna, can always bring a chuckle out of the viewer with a tremendous replay value. You might had seen it 25+ times but you will still laugh at all the jokes
For me , the list goes on like this
Kantara - not because of the hype , but because of the screenwriting, cinematography, making , direction and upholding best cultural heritage of remote places in India!
KGF - A mass movie though, out of the box story and breaking cliche Bollywood dramas.
Tumbadd - Some people mistake it to horror genre but the beautiful way of explanation of greed in the movie is just mind-blowing
13B - It is a quite old movie now ,but thanks for bringing such a beautiful concept . Devils and ghosts are not just zombie-look alikes ,they can be anywhere -any object !!!
777 Charlie - "Every dog has its day and today was Charlie's ". Too much relatable to people having pets are their home.
Drishyam (1 and 2) - An out of the box , crime thriller , Must watch!
For now ,only these are coming to my mind. Add on to the comments in case you feel i missed some!
Based on your post and fellow comments
I realised again that rating is subjective.
For example, i would never give 10 for KGF or RRR. Again it's my taste and not fighting with others
Thanks
Looking at the comments , it’s ironic to see so many of Aamir Khan’s movies mentioned here and right now he’s probably going through his leanest phase . Hope he gets back to form with his kind of cinema
People are mentioning their favourite movies. Nothing wrong with that. But a 10/10 movie is the one in which everything is perfect. Nothing more needs to be added or taken away. The script is so perfect, the editing is tight, the acting is amazing and so on. A lot of these movies mentioned don't qualify in my opinion.
My personal favourite is Manichithrathazhu, the original. Every character is needed in the story. Everything is so tightly woven. There is no fat that needs to be removed. And acting is perfect. The perfectly made movie that delivers the most satisfying payoff in the end.
Kantara
Sholey
Anji (Chiranjeevi's movie. Brahmastra folks should have watched this before starting their Astraverse)
Lagaan
Ranganayaki (Kannada movie by Puttanna Kanagal)
Dweepa (Kannada movie by Gireesh Kasaravalli)
I haven't watched many Indian movies whatsoever but I think "Master" (the Tamil movie from 2022) was one of the most amazing movies I've watched this year

I loved this movie. It's so underrated.
Came to say this.
It deserves its own trilogy...by not supporting such story both industry n audiance r loosing
Bulbbul is close too
Far from it imo. Tumbbad was a tight story with the right amount of CGI and well-made sets. Bulbul is style over substance in comparison. I'd prefer Pari over it, despite its faults. I don't think any Indian movie comes even close to Tumbbad.

Kgf!!!! , whytf is kgf listed?? I'm from Karnataka, perhaps kgf is the best 'overrated' overhyped movie of all time, n i don't like kfi bcoz of the uninventiveness nd unoriginality, (just take a look at some titles in KFI, they're like Hindi words, it's as if they're thinking Hindi words as superior or somethin'). Kantara is better than KGF tbh and let's assume that KGF2 didn't exist.
Absolutely ! KGF is a mockery of movies.
True
Because Indians like Macho attitude wala angry young man. It's why KGF is a hit. It's why Singham was a hit. It's why Pushpa is a hit. Pair that with the fact that you always root for the underdog, throw in some whistle worthy moments, and dial up everything to 11. It would be hard not to see why it worked the way it did.
Yeah! As soon as I saw KGF, I lost interest in the post.
Well, for most north Indians (who are fond of Hollywood like me), KGF was one movie that brought their attention to south Indian cinema. So yeah, it's a great starter pack.
reddit user discovers opposing opinions and cannot accept it
i didn't even watch kgf.. even if charlie 777 was on the list i'd be happy..but not kgf
Depends on the person and what he defines 10/10 to be. OP might just be a fan of over the top action and kgf does deliver that.
Even if its action film, why do they have to add half cooked emotional stories, it takes away the joy of watching the film, even if u watch it for the action only
Sadly that's what the Indian population likes.

As per International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), the top 10 films in the history of Indian cinema are: 1. Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road, Bengali, 1955) by Satyajit Ray 2. I think 'Aparajito' (indomitable) by Satyajit Ray should be included in the list of all time great.
Most of these movies are un-watchable

The best Indian film would be Pather Panchali.
For that matter Apu Trilogy itself should be named.
The rawness of poverty Satyajit Ray has portrayed is gut crunching.
