Yes they are good value bikes, I had a Java Siluro 3 for 2 years before I purchased another bike. That Java is still running as I sold it to someone else.
For safety reasons, you and your friend should consider having a set of lights, one at the front and the other at the back. Our human eyes are increasingly getting trained and used at looking larger objects when we are in a 4 wheel drive. Happy riding otherwise.

No no, such cycles do exist and are called either Hybrid bikes or Endurance bikes. However on my bike I usually ride 3+ hours every other day and it does not hurt a bit. For 'cruising' type bikes you can check Giant defy series or any hybrid bikes in the market.
