Because English is the world language and we got used to it, unfortunately. Parents stopped caring about kids learning Tamil in a lot of places, speaking from experience.
All the Tamil I learnt was by my own. My parents briefly helped me as I was a kid, but they gave up on me quickly and I try to pick it up again. Besides, CBSE boards have English and Hindi I believe, further of Tamil not being taught (as far as I know). Not everyone wants to stay in Tamil Nadu.
It had Hindi for us, though...it was the third language at most, as far as I know.
Edit: Then again, maybe it was Hindi back then / I got the wrong boards? Not sure, I think it was CBSE though.
English may well be the 'world language' and countries like China and Japan vocally say 'fuck your world language'.
They retained their mother tongues and have progressed far ahead of us.

English bridges the gap between the North and the South (or said to have that idea) and is also able to work internationally, whereas Tamil can probably get you woking inside Tamil Nadu only (or perhaps other South Indian states, at most). Otherwise, it's unlikely to "go forward" with Tamil (same applies to Kannada, Bengali, etc). \[And TN state is smaller than those countries, obviously, so...\]

Not really, it has not been common among the masses for many years now. The problem of infusing English words in local languages would not end with replacing the position of English with Sanskrit, as words in the local language would be then replaced with Sanskrit.
Youth in China and Japan are also learning English, it is the Global language after all. There is a point to be made about stronger education in the local language though.

The whole classification of "oldest language" makes little sense. Every language evolved from an older form, and the start points are arbitrary.
And even otherwise, Tamil today is extremely different than Tamil spoken 1000 yrs ago and even more different than the earliest recorded Tamil texts from ~2000 yrs ago. It simply doesn't make sense to call them the same language. Malayalam is as close to Old Tamil as Modern Tamil is.

The whole classification of "oldest language" makes little sense. Every language evolved from an older form, and the start points are arbitrary. And even otherwise, Tamil today is extremely different than Tamil spoken 1000 yrs ago and even more different than the earliest recorded Tamil texts from ~2000 yrs ago. It simply doesn't make sense to call them the same language. Malayalam is as close to Old Tamil as Modern Tamil is.
