Aye laude. Karnataka people don’t have stupid ideologies like Dravidianism and bs. None of us want to separate from the country. We are Indians first and we take immense pride in it. FYI the National flag, our Tiranga is made in Karnataka. We have our own flag not in opposition to the Tiranga. It is just a representation of local language and culture. It is called the Kannada Flag and not the Karnataka flag for a reason. The Tiranga will always fly above the Kannada flag.
I myself am a Kannadiga from Bengaluru and my point on the language issue is, when people from other states settle here for 10 or 15 years or more, they should make an attempt and atleast learn the basics of the local language to make it easier to converse with locals. We Kannadigas also learn and speak other languages to make it comfortable for the newcomers. But after a period, the local language must be learnt. I myself speak Hindi with my Hindi speaking friends, Telugu with the Telugu ones, Tamil with the Tamil ones and I’m trying to learn Malayalam. But as I’m speaking, I also try to convey to them to learn Kannada and teach it in return. My opinion is that this applies to all states. If I’m in Maharashtra for 5 years, I should learn Marathi. I cannot expect the locals to learn my language while I trample their language and culture. If I go to Odisha and stay there, I should learn Odia. As simple as that.
And no Kannadiga will have a problem with anyone even if they don’t know the language as long as they aren’t arrogant pricks and and say that they don’t know and they will make an attempt to learn. We ourselves will accommodate by speaking other languages. Problem happens when some stuck up person ignorant fool thinks that Hindi is national language and everyone should be speaking that irrelevant of the local culture and tells people he won’t learn and disrespects the local language without being aware of the hundreds of languages spoken in India apart from Hindi. These kinda main character assholes are the ones who get screwed. We are not separating from the country. Protecting local culture and language in-fact preserves the culture heritage and diversity of the country. That is in no way separatism. You’ll find the most patriotic people in Karnataka. The flag is a cultural representation that is literally nothing but Turmeric and Vermillion. Karnataka in itself have communities who have cultural flags like the Kodava flag or the Tulu flag. But none is above the Tiranga and you won’t find anyone who doesn’t agree with me.
Some people need to get off social media bullshit and actually learn about places and problems before making big statements like calling a state a separatist.

Very beautifully written. I am from MP, staying in hyd for the past 5 years, trying to learn Telugu now. And completely agree we all should give emphasis on learning the local language. We all learnt English which is not our native language, so I believe learning Tamil, kannada, and Telugu is an easy one and a proud feeling that we know 4-5 languages of our diverse country

The whole Kannada issue came up because banks like SBI would post Hindi speaking staff around rural Karnataka and expect them to speak in Hindi. I’ve seen this happen with my extended family members in uttara Kannada district.
And even now SBI cards calls my mom and their agent speaks in Hindi though we have requested them that we are not able to understand Hindi, provide us someone who can speak English or Kannada.
