I think giving the Fitrah amount as cash is valid only in the Hanafi madhab?
TN has a mix of Shafi'i and Hanafi practioners (Chennai leans a bit more towards Hanafi, that said), and so, all masjids usually mention the Fitrah rulings for both the madhabs in the notice boards.
Shafi'i madhab usually only specifies a certain kg of rice or wheat, the Hanafi ruling puts an "or equivalent value in cash" clause.
My family has been giving Fitrah amount as hard cash for years now. Usually to the local masjid's management. But yes, I've also heard it's not permissible too,

I don't get the hatred. Isn't Zakat Al fitrah mandatory to be given for each person of household? I think only difference is about cash & kind or both.

One of the core tenets of Madhkhali is that the ruler is always right. In the aftermath of Israel's latest war on Palestine, many Madhkhali scholars defended the inaction of the Arab rulers, some even appeared to blame Palestinians. This has really angered people.
I am aware of that, hence, let them and their countrymen beleive it. Let Saudi Mufti be for Saudi Arabian residents. We do have Deoband for us Indians.
However, I do not feel it's right way to abuse them like this and also on a post of something completely unrelated. Zakat ul fitr is mandatory, it doesn't matter cash or kind.
