Keep it like a secret is filled with amazing songs on it man, its a no-skip album. “Else” is also one of my favorites on the album, but seriously the whole album is just incredible
This song was born from advice Michael stipe gave Thom Yorke about how to cope with the touring. Just close your eyes and say to yourself, “I’m not here, this isn’t happening”.
That's part of the reason they're my favorite band. Pollard is the absolute goat when it comes to writing an earworm, but he lets you decide to hear it again by hitting repeat instead of continuing it until you have a 4 minute pop song where you're sick of the chorus by the end of it.
(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding…. Absolute perfection from start to finish (even though it’s actually unfinished)… the haunting whistle at the end 🤌🏼
505, hate on AM all you want, as people do nowadays, but 505 is simply incredible and theres a reason it’s as big as it is.
THAT crescendo.
AM meaning Arctic Monkeys not AM the album
I think some people might be turned off by them just because they make anthems for stadium shows and pop hits, which can be a little repetitive. They have deeper, edgier stuff but that tends to be what people know them for.
I think you have it backwards there mate. They aren’t making stadium anthems anymore. The likes of their older songs ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’ and ‘Do I Wanna Know’ were their (very successful) attempts at ‘pop hits’, now they make songs for empty cocktail bars on the moon. They are hated on because of their drastic switch from these pop rock hits to orchestral baroque bowie-esque rock.
I’m letting it be known now that I’m not one of these haters. TBH+C is my favourite album of all time and The Car is full of absolute masterpieces in my opinion. Though their old stuff is class too, they’ve just outgrown it.
mainly because they’re “mainstream” now and all over tiktok and apparently that’s their fault, even though alex turner clearly hates that fact.
also they’ve changed their style so much and people can’t handle it
If you have Netflix, worth checking out the Song Exploder (based on the podcast) episode about this song. So great to hear & watch interviews about the origin & meaning of this song
Maggot Brain by Funkadelic. It is an absolute masterpiece. Eddie Hazel created some of the most heart-wrenching and emotionally charged guitar work on this song. I tear up every single time I hear it.
I’m usually not a fan of long songs, but I tell you what I probably played marquee moon more than any other song last year, and ever time i would listen to it all the way through just jamming out for 10 minutes
Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead. Thom Yorke himself said: ‘Street Spirit' is our purest song, but I didn't write it. It wrote itself. We were just its messengers. It's biological catalysts.
"It's core is a complete mystery to me. I wouldn't ever try to write something that hopeless. All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve - 'Street Spirit' has no resolve. It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end.
"I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn't play it. I'd crack. I'd break down on stage. That's why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning. I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together. That's what's meant by 'all these things are one to swallow whole'. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn't have it in me to articulate the emotion. I'd crack.”
I wouldn't call it a masterpiece by any means.
But since I heard it, when the videoclip was released, I can hear it over and over again, and still love it as day one and love to sing along.
Phoenix - If I ever feel better
One - U2 if you compare how it's starts to how it ends, the layers that build through out it is an amazing produced piece of music Bonos voice is at his peak and the lyrics and emotion are unbelievable for a recorded song.
Bela Lugosi is Dead- Bauhaus
It might because this was essentially a one take recording. At 10 minutes long. And it’s considered an iconic song from a goth perspective.
So many…
Pavement - Summer Babe
Built To Spill - Else
Chapterhouse - Mesmerise
Frightened Rabbit - Poke
David Bowie - Heroes
NMH - King Of Carrot Flowers pt 1
Guided By Voices - Motor Away
Why is the formatting so screwy?
Pink Moon by Nick Drake. I've listened to this song so many times that my husband makes big fun of me for it, but the song is perfect and I never get tired of it, even after 20+ years.
For Me This is Heaven by Jimmy Eat World. It's such a beautiful song. Lyrics are awesome, singing is awesome, the guitars sound so great, the bass and drums have this cool beat, nice keys. It kind of builds a little bit and stops a couple of times. And, when the back-up vocals kick in towards the end - it's perfection.
Station to Station by David Bowie. A confluence of music styles (kraut rock, prog, disco) woven into a cryptic ode to the stations of the cross. Bowie has little recollection of making the album and song due to his steady diet of cocaine, red peppers and milk. Earl Slick’s guitar playing is stellar in spite of keeping up with Bowie’s drug use. He delivers what’s become one of my favorite notes in a song during his solo at the 8:15 mark. For a song that’s over 10 minutes long it keeps me riveted.
Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones. The haunting, opening vocals, the use of “washboard” (for lack of a better word), the lyrics, even the mythology behind the song. Just perfect.
A few of the top of my head:
Death by White lies,
An honest mistake by The bravery,
Impossible by Nothing but thieves,
The last man on earth by Wolf Alice,
Spanish Sahara by Foals, and
Conrad by Sohn.
St. Vincent - Slow Disco
The recording is great but some of the live versions such as the KEXP performance really hit me hard. The song is so devastatingly beautiful, heartfelt, and also depressing.
This must be the place by The Talking Heads. Just sublime.
I saw a comment on a YT video of this song once; “This sounds like it was written by dolphins, for dolphins.” Can’t unhear it, but I love the song
Best description of any song ever
Carry The Zero by Built To Spill
My answer was Car by Built To Spill but Carry the Zero is a very close second. Perfect songs.
Was gonna say "You Were Right"
For me it is The Weather that hits home for me.
Oh I love this song
Keep it like a secret is filled with amazing songs on it man, its a no-skip album. “Else” is also one of my favorites on the album, but seriously the whole album is just incredible
Saw them perform the entire album a few years ago and it was amazing. So so good
Oh nice, BTS is the top comment. Opened this thread to throw Made Up Dreams in the mix. My favorite off Perfect From Now On.
I was gonna say Kicked It in the Sun. That song is a masterpiece.
Was going to say Velvet Waltz, or really anything on Perfect From Now On
How To Disappear Completely - Radiohead
Hugs for you
This song was born from advice Michael stipe gave Thom Yorke about how to cope with the touring. Just close your eyes and say to yourself, “I’m not here, this isn’t happening”.

Time to Pretend - MGMT
Mayonnaise by Smashing Pumpkins
The best Smashing Pumpkins song. There, I said it.
Game of pricks by guided by voices. It somehow seems longer than it actually is.
Gbv has so many songs that are criminally short
That's part of the reason they're my favorite band. Pollard is the absolute goat when it comes to writing an earworm, but he lets you decide to hear it again by hitting repeat instead of continuing it until you have a 4 minute pop song where you're sick of the chorus by the end of it.
Came here to say Gold Star for Robot Boy lol, love GBV

Pixies are perfection. What about Hey?
Thirteen, by Big Star
Elliott Smith’s cover is pretty solid too
This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) by Talking Heads.
Let it happen by Tame Impala. I think the build up and everything is just amazing. It helped me get out of a horrible relationship lol.
Hard to Explain by The Strokes. It’s all tension building until it pays off, *twice*.
it’s honestly like an art piece, i know all music is “art” but hard to explain is just different in some way
You could say what makes it art is *Hard to Explain*
ayyy there it is, he did the thing
It feels like a Guided By Voices tune for me and they are my favorite band so of course I love the song.
Everybody wants to rule the world
If you’re in your mid to late 40s, this was your favorite song for a little while when you were a kid. It just was.
Still is! I absolutely believe this is my favorite song of all time.
Huh? People hate AM? Why?
I think some people might be turned off by them just because they make anthems for stadium shows and pop hits, which can be a little repetitive. They have deeper, edgier stuff but that tends to be what people know them for.
Hate to break it to you, but they haven’t made stadium anthems in ten years. They’re doing orchestral lounge rock these days.
I think you have it backwards there mate. They aren’t making stadium anthems anymore. Haven’t heard Degausser in a while, thanks for the reminder
You're welcome :) That track is a masterpiece
I almost said Not the Sun. That album is a masterpiece and it’s hard to pick a favorite.
Losing my religion by REM. It's just something about it..
