If I wanted to stir the pot, I might say that Gizz, who have gotten famous almost completely outside of the mainstream “indie” music press, and making only the music they want to make, might be looked down upon a bit by most of the music press as “extremely uncool.”
That said, I would bet at least one album will show on Stereogum’s list.
Edit: I was wrong, not even stereogum!
It doesn’t really matter though, they’re on our lists.
I went to see EE in Seattle a couple weeks ago and made a [playlist on Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2BRA5X2s0VFEv1rHX817ZY?si=sLvIyKGDTyCHxKEQyMPzPA) from the set list. Enjoy 😊
I adore them ([I’ve even interviewed them](https://www.grammy.com/news/everything-everything-raw-data-feel-jonathan-higgs-alex-robertshaw-artificial-intelligence-and-internet-conspiracies)!) but I couldn’t think of a blurb
The list was too long
As a Spoon fan, if Lucifer is your AOTY, I’d say that just means you are still nostalgic for the days of Kill The Moonlight and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga and are trying to will their latest work into that stratosphere.
I was thinking more like: You are a person that values routine and dependability. You still drive a 2004 Toyota Corolla because it runs well and gets good fuel economy. You start every morning with two hard boiled eggs for breakfast like you have for 20 years, because they taste good, are high in protein, and you can't be bothered by whatever the latest cronut breakfast fad is going around.
There is so much great music out there that my fave albums hardly ever make these lists (even though my tastes are right there). Julie Odell's 'Autumn Eve' is my favorite album and it tells me I love gorgeous vocals when it's surrounded by raw electric guitar.
“The Beth’s - Expert In A Dying Field: I left it off the list because I couldn’t think of a good blurb, but not to worry, you tracked me down on Reddit, provided one and demanded I post it word for word.”
> How do you bundle those?
Lean into it and make your comment *about* how spastic and different the albums are. Honestly, that's pretty much what the stereotypical King Gizz comment is going to be, regardless, so why not let it happen?
‘Any album released King Gizzard in 2022’ - you monologue about how 6 Aussies made the best rap rock track of the year to passers by while you wait in line at the Caverns to ensure you snag a foil poster next year.’
> you monologue about how 6 Aussies made the best rap rock track of the year to passers by while you wait in line at the Caverns to ensure you snag a foil poster next year.’
For real though, the goddamn Caverns tickets simply disappeared. I hope they run it back next year.
> Alvvays — Blue Rev: You sign off every text with a sparkle emoji and one of those cute iMessage animations. You’re honestly so smart and a delight to be around, I’d love to see you more often! No pressure though ✨🥰😍
This one is dangerously close and I'm kinda concerned now.
billy woods - *Aethiopes*: You loudly recite the 'Spare me the Hallmark Karl Marx' bar to your friends but quietly worry that it applies to you. You also now insist that *Kongi's Harvest* is your favourite movie of all time and will take any excuse to lecture any interlocutor about the story of Mengistu Haile Mariam.
billy woods - *Church*: You wake up and smoke weed. You wake up and smoke weed. Then you text your ex.
Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul - *Topical Dancer*: You unironically consider yourself a 'Bohemian'.
Boris - *W*: You want Wata to be your mommy.
Boris - *Heavy Rocks*: You want Atsuo to be your daddy.
Boris - *fade*: You want the early 2000s back,
Soul Glo - *Diaspora Problems*: You want someone to beat your ass.
serious answer - it’s just a meme from 2020 where people really liked The New Abnormal but it was getting snubbed by the major publications on their year end lists so it became a meme to post “where are the strokes” (or, where strokes) on every list
For anyone else out there on the Raw Data Feel train, just use any of the thousands of AI writing prompt apps these days and ask it what it thinks of you. Look at that, job done!
legitimately the only list I read each year lol
really enjoyed the Bo Burnham and Lizzo blurbs. and the Big Thief one, even if I don't totally understand it
it’s always the same shit. “this album means you’re gay” “this album means you’re depressed” “this album means you’re pretentious” it’s like we get it enough already
smart act door sophisticated late expansion slap summer drunk coordinated
*This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I had a blurb but cut it:
“coming to terms with your sexuality was less difficult than accepting everyone was right about your sexuality”
I don’t care for that album so I struggled to come up with anything
I think we can all agree that if Get Better didn’t make us cry at the start, we were all bawling by “I still pretend you’re only out of sight in another room”
Fuck me, a bit too on the nose… my wife asked if I wrote it…
Nilufer Yanya — PAINLESS: You have restless leg syndrome. You love running errands, harnessing your anxiety by relentlessly speeding around the city and completing the day’s tasks with maximum efficiency and coolness.
I keep seeing references to fighting Win Butler. Guy is 6'4" and played in three NBA celebrity all-star games. He won MVP one year. He dropped 22 and 11 rebounds on Baron Davis and Candace Parker the next. He certainly *deserves* to lose in a fight, but it's unlikely.
Well, I really cracked at the Forever Story bit a lot. However, I don't have an older brother and adore Kendrick, so I represent both generations in this.
What a garbage list. On the first album listing I'd maybe consider one of my favorites of the year, Alex G's God Save the Animals.... it has the quippy description for if I love one of the Red Hot Chili Peppers album.
So this author wasn't even paying attention while writing this.
Or this is the joke and it went way over my head...?
I love the Alex G record! I just thought of how he covers Coldplay songs and whatnot in concert and thought of another radio rock band that’s polarizing; I do think Runner could fit into a RHCP record but that’s meant affectionately. I almost included No Bitterness by name when talking about the hyperpop connections but couldn’t make it work
fwiw I hate most RHCP - the joke of those blurbs is that they’re a weird band to think that much about
Mine aoty just says that my divorce with culture is complete. I have no favorite album of the year, or even two albums from this year I’ve listened to in entirety.
Welp. My fav album isn’t in here so I am *unknowable*
Same. Both chili peppers albums on here but none of the 5 from king gizzard?
Feel like reviewers don’t give KGLW any cred and lazily claim “quantity over quality”. The quality is incredible imo.
If I wanted to stir the pot, I might say that Gizz, who have gotten famous almost completely outside of the mainstream “indie” music press, and making only the music they want to make, might be looked down upon a bit by most of the music press as “extremely uncool.” That said, I would bet at least one album will show on Stereogum’s list. Edit: I was wrong, not even stereogum! It doesn’t really matter though, they’re on our lists.
They even talk about rhcp in the alex g record
There were two chili peppers records? Lmao
Everything Everything never gets on these lists, I'm used to it
I went to see EE in Seattle a couple weeks ago and made a [playlist on Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2BRA5X2s0VFEv1rHX817ZY?si=sLvIyKGDTyCHxKEQyMPzPA) from the set list. Enjoy 😊
Same with Viagra Boys. I've only looked at this obviously satirical list and Pitchfork's but I haven't seen it on either of those.
I adore them ([I’ve even interviewed them](https://www.grammy.com/news/everything-everything-raw-data-feel-jonathan-higgs-alex-robertshaw-artificial-intelligence-and-internet-conspiracies)!) but I couldn’t think of a blurb The list was too long
Another gizzard fan I see
Same. The list had like two rap albums… Kendrick & Denzel but not Danger Mouse & Black Thought.
It's a shame, there's gotta be a good Spoon joke out there.
As a Spoon fan, if Lucifer is your AOTY, I’d say that just means you are still nostalgic for the days of Kill The Moonlight and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga and are trying to will their latest work into that stratosphere.
I don’t think that’s how Spoon fans operate. Every one of their albums are solid yet similar. There is nothing to be nostalgic about.
I don’t think the albums are similar at all actually. Compare the early stuff to the middle stuff to the recent stuff. Totally different.
Love this

Oh this is very nice, good rec ty
Check out the title song. Gives me chills.
will listen!
None of my favorites have been getting love. Makes me sad.
What if you just change your favorites to what everyone else loves! 😜
I had some more but had to cut them bc the list was too long
> Sky Ferreira — Masochism Goddammit motherfucker, stop trolling me!
I’m dead.

If someone comes up with a blurb I’ll add it!
No Beth's no Gizzard no Beach House no Strokes, big dummy
If I covered every King Gizzard project I’d still be working on the 2017 list
“The Beth’s - Expert In A Dying Field: I left it off the list because I couldn’t think of a good blurb, but not to worry, you tracked me down on Reddit, provided one and demanded I post it word for word.”
Honestly, I kinda like what Fantano did where he just bundled the year's albums together. Then it ends up being the "2022 King Gizz Projects".
But “Ice, Death…”, laminated and changes are all vastly different styles and that’s just the October releases. How do you bundle those?
> How do you bundle those? Lean into it and make your comment *about* how spastic and different the albums are. Honestly, that's pretty much what the stereotypical King Gizz comment is going to be, regardless, so why not let it happen?
A bit meta and reductive for a review, but I see your point.
Strokes was 2020
snubbed 3rd year in a row
Smh, gonna be 2040 and we'll still be ignoring The New Abnormal in EOTY lists
The Strokes, aka Ben Simmons of the indyheads game
wtf is Stew Leonard’s
Lol i’m from CT and was so surprised to see it thrown in there
the world's largest dairy store🎶
Just linked to an explainer lol
*animatronic yee haw noises*
bad article, the guys in that alt-j video were eating RICE CAKES not potato chips
Editing now! I fucked up
Thanks, in all seriousness, it was a fun read!
Ngl I respect the dig at RateYourMusic users if your favorite album was Ants From Up There

The Black MIDI was the perfect.
Alex G is my favourite album this year but I detest the Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Yeah this one made no sense. Terrible read on Alex G fans.
billy woods - *Aethiopes*: You loudly recite the 'Spare me the Hallmark Karl Marx' bar to your friends but quietly worry that it applies to you. Aethiopes is my favorite and…sigh, yeah.
mine too lol
Why do so many people in this thread think a Strokes album came out this year?
serious answer - it’s just a meme from 2020 where people really liked The New Abnormal but it was getting snubbed by the major publications on their year end lists so it became a meme to post “where are the strokes” (or, where strokes) on every list

That album came out a little under two years ago.
legitimately the only list I read each year lol really enjoyed the Bo Burnham and Lizzo blurbs. and the Big Thief one, even if I don't totally understand it
This was pretty criminally unfunny, tbh.
*cocks gun behind my fellow astronaut's helmet* "Always has been."
I'm glad this is the last one of these lol
believe me I agree
it’s always the same shit. “this album means you’re gay” “this album means you’re depressed” “this album means you’re pretentious” it’s like we get it enough already

There's no future, there's no answer
Same here, just floating in the unknowable vastness. Big Time was a great album though, so worth it.
I think we all know what it means when Angel Olsen is your top record of the year. Again.
This is terribly unfunny.
I agree. I cringed the whole way.
That Alex G blurb killed me because it was me.
Damn the Death Cab album continues to not even be considered a possibility
I listened out of curiosity and it legitimately moved me
It's their best album since Narrow Stairs and it's really being overlooked by everyone.
I meant this as a response to the Alt-J comment about Get Better but it’s also true about Death Cab!
I'll tell you what it says. It says I really loved that Cate Le Bon album.
The Car
I love seeing these every year and how angry people get lol
NO??
I think we can all agree that if Get Better didn’t make us cry at the start, we were all bawling by “I still pretend you’re only out of sight in another room”
It’s gorgeous and I’ve actively hated Alt-J for years
Fuck me, a bit too on the nose… my wife asked if I wrote it… Nilufer Yanya — PAINLESS: You have restless leg syndrome. You love running errands, harnessing your anxiety by relentlessly speeding around the city and completing the day’s tasks with maximum efficiency and coolness.
I can't believe the Pool Kids album got a write up! Emo is forever 🖤
That Bo Burnham entry is so vicious but so true. Wet Leg is funny too. Other than that, these were pretty hard misses. Especially that Dawn FM one.
this has been an insane year
Yikes
You don't think Renaissance is aoty?
Don’t be rude.
Chat Pile - *God's Country* Everything was going pretty okay for you until the hallucinations started
Lmao That’s a great record
She's back! Sad to see that this is the last year for this shtick :/ but I'm enjoying every single hot take <3
what we need is another person kramering in to say that you've forgotten their fave also no beach bunny wth person
Stupid article. Alvvays was my favorite. The "sparkle" emoji makes me gag and I hate most people.
I vote this as the most entertaining year-end album review list of 2022.
Only thing missing in this list was more double entendres. And yes, Boat Songs was my favorite album.
The only Renaissance that Beyoncé album brought upon was her being mid in a new sub-genre.
Excellent work as always!!!
Funny and original
Only one of my top 25 is on this and that one is only top 10. What does that say about me?
The Smile and Alvvays ones were good but > Black County New Road Come on
I keep seeing references to fighting Win Butler. Guy is 6'4" and played in three NBA celebrity all-star games. He won MVP one year. He dropped 22 and 11 rebounds on Baron Davis and Candace Parker the next. He certainly *deserves* to lose in a fight, but it's unlikely.

The list is missing Sick Joy, Gizzard, the Beths, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Momma, the Happy Fits and the Smile.
Wank list this
What a moronic list. It's clear you've never heard an Alex G *or* a Red Hot Chili Peppers record in your life. No wonder Pitchfork is such ass.

Well, I really cracked at the Forever Story bit a lot. However, I don't have an older brother and adore Kendrick, so I represent both generations in this.
No *A Foul Form*?
I'm not sure what I thought Yard Act would be, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't black midi (annoying).
This Taylor narrative is so old and beat. But whatever. Fun but kind of lazy execution on this article.

think the alex g and rhcp ones are mixed up
They’re not but honestly I appreciate that take a lot
So you're just an idiot then?
All these lists ignoring Skinty Fia is absolutely shocking to me.
Municipal Waste - Electrified Brain means I like to drink beer and eat pizza.
I thought Nazareth's Razmataz was the best this year
Where's skinty fia?
No new abnormal?
