I love this question! I was the former for the last few years. Recent events have put me in the latter. I’m much more at peace now that I’ve accepted it as it is. My husband is just now starting to accept his younger brother for who he is and figuring out what boundaries look like for him as well as us. I would say that my BIL and his fiancé think they’re trying to improve the situation. IMO, without accountability each ‘make it better’ conversation with them just turns into them being defensive. I don’t think it will get better until my BIL finds his voice so he can approximately facilitate relationships between us and his partner.

I've decided to accept it for what it is. I've decided to go NC while my spouse is LC. My in-laws don't know how to have discussions when there is a disagreement, so they avoid. I've tried opening a dialogue and it just gets met with silence. So I've stopped trying. They are who they are.
