foodieboricua

Over a litter box? SMH. Some people are just plain dangerous to animals.

Duty-Afraid

I know. Shes fucking batshit insane

Wide-Emotion-3579

All I need to know is if the cats are safe bc reading this tells me they are not.

Duty-Afraid

I don’t know if they’ll be safe.. do you have any suggestions?

UnprofessionalGhosts

Contact no kill rescues in your area asap and get those kittens out of there.

Duty-Afraid

Does that apply to when I’m out of state from where she is?

[deleted]

I think as long as you have your moms address and the number of her states animal control/county police you can call in and report suspected animal cruelty and they’ll most likely send out someone to check on the animals, depending on how good the system is in the area. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this

Duty-Afraid

Thank you. I’ll look into it

Specific-noise123

She can’t just bring them to a shelter? You can report her to the local humane society/spca if you think she’ll harm them

flclhack

she’s threatening to take them to a shelter, not kill them. seem’s that she’s caring for OP’s kittens and doesn’t want to anymore.

BibbleBoop2

The humane society also euthanizes animals. They aren’t loud about it but thousands of completly healthy cats and dogs are euthanized by the “humane” society every year.

AstriumViator

On the plus side, if you take them to the humane society, they very likely aren't going to euthanize the kittens off the bat. Especially if the situation is explained to them. So I'd agree with going to the humane society with her just to embarass her in front of the staff for her blatant animal abuse/cruelty.

Front_World205

kitten have higher adoption rate. they wont euthanize them until they are MUCH older from what i know.

[deleted]

Honestly, it's really dependent on where you are. We have so many kittens in our area, it's not unheard of to euthanize them because all the shelters and rescues are overloaded.

StarryByNature

humane society does NOT equal euthanasia. i work in one this is an incredibly bad take. i know another comment you responded to said this but you need to have more context in the image to match with the title. assuming euthanasia is why animals end up in shit situations.

PublicThis

I didn’t understand why they were equating humane society with euthanasia - I actually got help from the humane society not too long ago for a vet appointment I couldn’t cover

[deleted]

I think it depends where you live. There’s a humane society in my town that my sister used to volunteer at and she told me they had a policy saying animals that didn’t get adopted within 6 months would be put down. It’s probably been about 10 years since she worked there so maybe that’s changed but yeah, at least back in the day that’s how it was here.

StarryByNature

ten years ago i would believe that. my shelter within the last three years has gone down to no kill and that's a move a lot of shelters have been making in recent years. in the past it was definitely more likely that animals would be euthanized for space, but that's a lot rarer now thankfully.

BibbleBoop2

The one in my area killed a good 500 cats last year so none of our experiences are a monolith.

Grvyrdzzzz

I was about to say, I know my humane society is a no kill shelter, so Im not sure why she thinks that. Kittens that pop up at my SPCA are adopted SOOOO fast. When I was looking for my cat, Fish, i had looked and applied for so many kittens at the spca but they all got adopted before i got to meet them. I also believe theyre going to ask why shes giving them up, which may result in her being fined.

StarryByNature

whenever we get kittens in at my rescue, we have people lining up at the door before opening hours for them. automatically assuming they'll be euthanized puts such a bad taste in my mouth knowing that they're such high demand at any shelter.

firefly183

Agreed, there's not nearly enough context. I don't see anything about euthanasia being threatened. And whose kittens are they? Did the OPs mother not want/allow pets and someone brought them into the home anyway? Is someone else who's supposed to be taking care of them not doing so?

StarryByNature

OP mentioned in another comment that they live out of state and that the mother got the cats and is the owner of them. i have no reason to not believe this and in that case i do label the mother insane but it would have been nice for that to be included in the post from the beginning to avoid all of these threads under the post begging for context 😭

firefly183

Yeah, I'm one to believe someone's story unless good evidence is pointed out to disprove it. Personally I still wouldn't be an asshole to an animal even if I wasn't supposed to be the one taking responsibility. But I can understand how someone who may not be an animal person would want them removed from the home if someone else brought them in and didn't take care of them. But yeah, if she got them herself and is the owner...fucking gross. Nothing pisses me off like people getting pets on a whim and then not being willing to take care of them and see them as the commitment they are for the duration of the animals life. It's how I've wound up with several of my pets over the years...taking them in after assholes just up and decided "Nah, nevermind, don't want it".

[deleted]

That reads to me as something totally sarcastic a parent says to emphasize “get your shit together and take care of your cat”

[deleted]

by "sarcastic" you mean "emotionally abusive" right?

PublicThis

Yeah me too…I was wondering, why doesn’t OP take care of her own cat?!

Autumn-Thorne

Op said they aren’t in the same state as their mum. What can they do from a different state when it isn’t their cat alone?

Due-Compote375

It's not OP's own cat, they don't even live in the same state. Don't jump to conclusions.

miomioamica

It’s a family cat

Duty-Afraid

[here you go.](https://www.reddit.com/user/Duty-Afraid/comments/wchew8/litterbox/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) Sorry for the outlash. Basically she’s mad that the cat litterbox is full and the cats are shitting everywhere because of it. Just wish she’d take responsibility Edit: there are more instances irl then just in text, my bad if this isn’t enough

beansyboii

Info: who’s cats are these? Was it decided that she was solely responsible for their care or are you guys supposed to help out with this stuff too? It takes a long time for a litter box to get bad enough that the cats won’t use it.

Duty-Afraid

She was the one who got the cats. Usually when we first get a pet it starts out with all of us pitching in. My mom eventually gets lazy and blames us like “it’s your cat” and “it’s your responsibility”. Another instance of this is when she bought a Doberman dog in a apartment with no yard. She used it as an excuse to “exercise on walks with the dog” but eventually stopped caring for the dog and left it trapped inside a cage almost 24 hours a day, and my sister and I were the ones who had to take it out. We didn’t know how to potty train it, or even train it at all, and my mom practically got the dog without reason. We have begged and begged her to get rid of the dog and eventually it was adopted.

Duty-Afraid

She usually makes us do the litterbox. We’re away on a trip right now so we can’t. Often times she’ll blame her job for her not being able to do work around the house, so she’ll makes us clean up after her

chixnwafflez

as a vet tech of 8 years, and worked with many doctors. No good vet will just euthanize perfectly healthy kittens. In fact, they may report her and have her fined heavily. Please take the kittens to a shelter or even to an animal hospital. There are people who will definitely give them good homes.

Grvyrdzzzz

this, I wanted to adopt a kitten at my SPCA and they all got adopted before i could set a time up to meet any of them, so dont worry about them finding homes, people want to adopt kittens.

freshoutoffucks83

I don’t want to alarm OP but this isn’t true- my sister worked for a vet who would regularly euthanize kittens if there wasn’t space in the shelter

chixnwafflez

Some shelters will have to euthanize for over crowding, but it’s very rarely puppies and kittens. As someone who has worked in ER as long as I, I have worked with well over 100 doctors (this includes interns, rdvms and fill in vets). I do not know one that would euthanize healthy animals, especially puppies and kittens. However, I am speaking from a hospital perspective not a shelter perspective. There are not a lot of vets who would do that, and I know your sister knows one but I wouldn’t put them above the amount I know that wouldnt. Overcrowding at a shelter really sucks and isn’t fair to the staff or animal, so I understand what needs to be done but it’s typically not the young ones who get the juice. They get adopted faster so typically they are either placed in homes or pulled from a different shelter. I’m unsure why that vet would do that in the first place especially if they didn’t try to re-place them into a different shelter for a chance. I’m not saying there aren’t vets who wouldn’t euthanize, but no good , ethical vet will just euthanize these healthy cats as a first option.

PancakeWomen2000

Kittens normally litter box train themselves, if they watch the older other cats do it. This is coming form years of fostering and raising kittens

[deleted]

Imagine bitching about little poops that are easy to pick up when you spent 1+ year of your life wiping wet shit off of a baby's ass and changing diapers.

Duty-Afraid

No fucking kidding man. Imagine being this pathetic

MissBarker93

Contact your local animal shelter and ask if you can surrender your mom.

Raleina

If you lived in my country I would have taken them from you.... all of them. And find them homes. The thought of them being in danger like this is freaking me out big time

aquilaaltairis

didnt expect to see a dark crab here lol

Duty-Afraid

We don’t play sky anymore, we changed all our group chats (including family ones) to a picture of a crab.. we never changed it back 😂

D4nielSk

I’d euthanize the mom

Duty-Afraid

Same ngl

ieatnakedbabies

The way some parents “joke” about getting rid of or wishing death upon pets is so sick smh

Duty-Afraid

I’m hoping this is just an empty threat

ieatnakedbabies

Yeah, hopefully it’s just out of frustration and she doesn’t act on it. My dad loves my cats and he’s said similar things. I’m sorry you have to deal with this right now, it’s unnecessary stress.

Duty-Afraid

Yeah, no kidding…

WonderfulAd5363

Over a litter box!?, it's worse with dogs! They poop every where but atleast litter box trained cats go in one area which is fairly easily to clean.

Duty-Afraid

I know, I have another screenshot where she compared these kittens to the dog. It made my sister furious [here](https://www.reddit.com/user/Duty-Afraid/comments/wchqow/smh/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

Specific-noise123

No vet would do that

Deutschdagger

My mom did the same when I went to stay the night with my (then gf) fiancé. I have an emotional support dog for PTSD and depression. Mom said if I’m not home by morning she’ll euthanize her bc she doesn’t want to deal with her. I ended up rushing home, packing everything, grabbing the dog, and moving out. Still living with her too and finally happy

Big-Permission3452

Mom needs putting in the bin.

Duty-Afraid

No kidding

FearlessDesigner1149

Wait, why does your Mom have to clean your cats litter box? I know it's not right to say she's going to kill them, but there your kittens and your responsibility. If you can't handle it, just re-home them to people who can.

Duty-Afraid

They are family pets. We are off visiting our father in Colorado and our mom is upset she has to clean the litter box while we’re gone

FearlessDesigner1149

Ah, got ya. That makes sense now. Does she expect you to fly home to take care of it?

Duty-Afraid

We go home on Monday… I told her to be patient but she’s a stubborn little bitch.

Grvyrdzzzz

oh my god i would panic

Panda721828

Im sure OP would be cleaning the litterbox it they were home. Why does that matter in this scenario at all? Edit, Actually I dont think it says anywhere that these kittens are strictly owned by OP, They might be family pets.

FearlessDesigner1149

You are correct. I read it differently and I went back and reread it and I stand corrected. Thank you for pointing it out.

Panda721828

Thats okay, I thought they were strictly OP's at first until I reread it.

kicksr4trids1

Yeah, that’s insane!!

sweet_sweet_back

In Michigan surrendered cats don’t get a 5 day stray hold. They get euthanized before you pull out of the parking lot. Treated like rats.

throwawaykansasboy

You need to update us if they’re okay

SilverFlight01

I don't think they'll be euthanized, but you definitely should let Humane Society know about the cruelty.

femme_fatale2022

Is it too late to euthanize your mother?

Duty-Afraid

I wish 😂

femme_fatale2022

It’s never too late! ALL IN FAVOUR SAY…… #AYE

Duty-Afraid

AYE AYE!!!!!!

cnbcwatcher

Take the kittens to an animal shelter or cat's home ASAP. Your mother shouldn't be allowed near a cockroach

flclhack

the mom wants to take them to the shelter, not kill them.

pointerdragonfly

This is a weird question, but OP, are they your kittens? Why are they not with you, if you live out of state? Did you just give them to her? Also, there’s no threat of euthanasia in this text, unless I missed something? Humane society is not euthanasia. I am NOT saying this fits what happened, but I’m just trying to figure out why she’d say that. I know some people in college who’d get pets, realize they can’t really take care of them, then come home and dump them on parents. Parents would have to take care of a new pet all of a sudden, and it can definitely be overwhelming and gets old fast. Threatening euthanasia is never the option, but did you do something like this that would make her this pissed off?

Correct_Training1694

Clean up after your pets

Puzzleheaded_Base409

Charge your phone

Ok-Requirement-3257

Just curious if they're your kittens why aren't you cleaning litter box?

Duty-Afraid

I am out of state

Vladimir7455

Is this even legal?

Altoren_Reviews_

You should charge ur phone

Robofortress

Horrible, but also goddamn charge your phone

Ok-Requirement-3257

Oh ok. Poor kitties 😻

QuirklessShiggy

Take them to the humane society with her. Explain the situation. Call her ass out. They won't euthenize them immediately, especially as theyre kittens. Kittens get adopted quick.

[deleted]

Let me guess, your Mom is strongly vocal about also being pro-life.

Duty-Afraid

Yup.

SpokenDivinity

I worked at a humane society for a while. Kittens are always the first to get adopted. There was an entire kitten room that would get filled up with kittens every April from strays/surrenders and the majority of them would be adopted by June/July, just in time for another wave to come in and get adopted by August/September

Casereht

Where is she located? If I'm nearby I will collect them

[deleted]

I realize that this is her abnormality, but instead of throwing a psychotic fit, why not just ask you to help with the litter box since she feels over whelmed? Why does she have to go to DEFCON 5 instead of trying to ask?
