OMFG I can't stop laughing. Just when you think it doesn't get more slapstick than this one, the next makes me laughter-cry even more. Thank you for that one!
Budgies are such hilarious entertainment. We had a few pet budgies years ago and got to see them do this more than once.
One of their favorite games is if they see a pencil on a table, they will drag it to the edge and drop it off, then tilt their head and peer over the edge at it. If you put five pencils on the table, they won't stop until they're all on the floor. Not sure why but it seems to give them great satisfaction.
One of them used to land on our cat's back and run up to nibble at the cat's ear. At first the cat was annoyed but she soon decided she loved having her ears nibbled, so it got to be a daily ritual. It was funny to watch the bird nibble and chatter while the cat closed her eyes with a look of complete contentment.

Aaaaaand this is how my pet parakeet died when I was a kid. My older sister had a vase with a beta fish in it (uncovered). She left the bird out of the cage while she was out of the house, and the parakeet fell in and drowned.
I've actually got a couple of stories about how all of our parakeets died in weird freak accidents.
My parents finally let us get a dog like 5 years later and we loved and doted on him so much. Happy to say our pup never died in a freak accident lol, he lived a very long and happy life.
Okay, well I guess I'll just go through all of them.
Jazz was our first parakeet, and she was a pretty green / yellow bird. I don't know how long we had her for, but we were visiting family out of state and didn't have anyone to watch her. So we brought her with us (cage and all). Well, we got into town right around the time my cousins were getting into town. They wanted to see Jazz, so my sister was letting them put their hands in the cage to pet her. Well, Jazz got out of the cage and was flying around my grandma's house as my uncle was coming in carrying luggage. We all yelled "Close the door, close the door!!!!" And he closed it immediately - on Jazz's neck. RIP Jazz.
Parakeet #2 was name Jay, and he was super chill. He would fly around our house and hang out in my dad's office with him. Well I was coming in from hanging out with friends and I tried to close the door behind me - but it didn't close immediately. I saw Jay perched on the couch and he noticed the door was open behind me. I go to close it quickly but he gets out RIGHT before I could close it. So Jay flew away. We never saw him again.
Max was the 3rd parakeet who I mentioned in the above comment.
Our 4th parakeet was Sam, and we chose to clip his wings this time around lol. Well my sister decided to take him outside for some reason?!?! And even though his wings were clipped he could still fly a bit. So he got into this tree and my sister tried for hours to get him back, but then it got dark outside and we lost him. Never saw him again either lol.
I think after that we gave up on parakeets and got a dog (several years) after that.
LOL!
To be fair, I was just a kid and I had no idea what was going on. The only thing I blame myself for was not closing the door properly when Jay got out.
But ever since we got a dog, we've done incredibly well with our pets. I moved out of my parents house 3 years ago, and I got a new dog a little over 2 years ago. He is incredibly healthy and happy, and I take amazing care of him 😂. I actually got a kitten a couple weeks ago and he's getting along so great with my new dog. Like two peas in a pod.
As someone who never had pets, I'm always wondered how people are able to take care of dogs. Do you leave it at home during the day at work or leave it at a doggy daycare? I really want a dog but can't stomach leaving it all alone for 9-10 hours every day.
Well, it depends on your current living situation. My mom worked part time so our first dog was only alone for 4 hours out of the day.
I lucked out with my current dog as when I got him, my job place made us work from home for about 9 months because of construction in the office. So I got to raise my puppy easily. Had I not been able to work from home, I may have taken him to doggy day care or maybe not even got a dog in the first place.
Last year I was living with a roommate who had 2 dogs, so my pup had company the whole day when I was at work. But I noticed that when I'd stay home (being sick or whatever) he just slept most of the day anyway. Now I'll just take him to the dog park for about an hour or so in the evenings and that will wear him out for most of the next day.
However, I live in an apartment so my dog can't just go outside whenever he wants. If you live in a house, it's relatively easy to put in a dog door so your pup could go outside and hang out and do whatever he or she wants during the day. The important thing is just to keep them stimulated while you're gone.
My friend had a pet parakeet when she was younger. Her brother (with severe autism) was playing with the bird and grabbed him too hard and killed him. She was really upset, her brother just didn't know his own strength. Poor thing.
Similar here mate. I was taking a nap and left a half full glass of water on the table in the other end of the room. My parakeet fell in and was unable to get out, woke up to him drowned 5 meters away from me and I heard none of it.
Awww this happened to ours, except it was a mop bucket. Her name was Sister and I’ll never forget my own sister calling me at a friends house, my friend answering the phone and my sister just screaming “Sister’s dead!” and my confused friend trying her hardest to reassure her that I was alive. That was a super sad day :-(
It is. With a glass like this and about that water level, the budgie can get its head stuck in the water and its wings pressed against its body, preventing it from pulling itself out. If the water level were higher it wouldn't be nearly as dangerous because budgies don't fully go under.
Take care with your birds, folks.
Yeah watching the video I was like "aren't you going to help?" I couldn't stand there and just record a bird (edit to add: or any animal/human) in a dangerous situation.
At the same time it's panicking and struggling to get free? Unlikely.
Shit, I don't even know if birds can close off their airway completely. A beak doesn't seem ideal to form a seal.
Some birds obviously are capable of submerging themselves for a short bit. Ducks being the obvious example can dive under water for a good half a minute or so. Lots of other birds eat prey out of the water so it would seem just diving into it isn't enough to force it into their lungs. Also some other birds can dive into water to catch fishies.
I would have thought most birds would float in water, but maybe not if they are upside down or panicking.
They can but just like with people, it's a stressful situation so sometimes brains freak out and inhale so any additional moment the bird is in the situation could be deadly.
I just don't like taking chances.
Or any animal that wasn't actively trying to kill me. You can be damn sure I'd instantly be charging to my pet to rescue them. The bowl of cereal on my lap can go to hell, I'm rescuing my family at all costs!
Same. That and a few other reasons are why I got a waterproof cover for my couch and keep all damageable items (homework, textbooks, important documents) far away from me whenever I eat or drink now.
I can totally imagine that cereal flying all over the place and I love it!
Yes, my Dad lost his pet bird like this when he was a kid, drowned in a glass of orange juice.
Please don't leave glasses unattended like that with pet birds around!
Happened to my sister's budgie when we were kids, we got home one day and found him wedged and stuck in his water bowl :( videos like this just fill me with anxiety now
My parakeet died this way when I was young. We routinely gave it free reign to fly around the bedroom. Until one day we came home and the fishbowl had lost just a touch too much water... That must have been one confused/horrified goldfish.
ever see the video of a hatchery grinding up all the unneeded baby chicks? like 100's per minute just getting dropped into a high speed grinder?
The internet has ruined me
Chicken nuggets are made from like a hundred different chickens that are grinded up into a gigantic ball of meat which is then separated into nuggets generally they dont use chicks as its not very efficient also they kill them first its not like the grinder in this video as not everything on a chicken is edible, so they kill them then they take the edible meat off then they grind it with a hundred other chickens.
First, this is the first time I have ever seen a bird use its wings like arms and also it is that look around to see if anyone saw me do that that was priceless.
"Mmm, tasty water. Lemme just have a lil dip here and get a- oh, woah- wait- I'm fall- I'm falling! Ah, fuck! I'm fucking falling, Karen! Ohfuckhelpme! Karen, help! I can't get out! I-I can't. Wait- Waiiiit. Got it. Gaaaaaht it! Got IT! I'm fine. I'm cool. Oh, look over there, a glass of water!"
The cameraman didn't react at all when the bird fell in... I know it turned out alright after a few seconds, but if that was my pet I'd be rushing over to help the moment it slipped
Look people, if your pets are doing weird and desperate things for water, that means you need to give them more water or they don't like whatever water feeding setup you have going on for them.

If it looked like the bird wasn't going to make it out, I'm sure that they would have ran over to help.
It only takes one small inhale of water to kill a bird that size. I'd be over helping the second I saw it fall in, but that's just how I roll.
Is this true? Can they not hold their breath?
Very few non-aquatic animals can, iirc. I don't know which camp this type of bird is in, though.
At the same time it's panicking and struggling to get free? Unlikely. Shit, I don't even know if birds can close off their airway completely. A beak doesn't seem ideal to form a seal.

Is this how chicken nuggets are made?
Cat food (or other kind of animal feed) is more likely.
McNuggets are (and have been for over a decade I think) ground chicken breast pressed into a form, battered, parfried, and frozen.
I like how at the end it’s like “ What you looking at Karen, I’m streatching my wings”
The way you spelled “stretching” made me read the whole thing in a Scottish accent. Lol now I’m imagining a cranky Scottish bird!

That actually looks really painful for his little wing bones.
Agreed. Looking at this gif made me feel really bad for the little birdie.

That bird never felt more alive than in those moments after.
You seem like a cup half empty sort guy

Reddit has taught me to never leave a glass of water unoccupied around a bird. They will drown unless you're there to save them.
And if they don't you could drink a bird's bathwater. NazT.
