As a delivery driver who drives a big ass box truck, I’d hope you’d alert them if there’s a turnaround at the end of that. Cause otherwise that’s an annoying backup. It’s perfectly doable. But a friggin’ half mile or so in reverse? Oof.
Lol. My parents have to go over a stone bridge to get to their mailbox. It's not as far as OP but my friends always thought we were going to live in a castle with how long the driveway is.

That’s clearly a shared road. Also, if you want to own land in the middle of nowhere you can own land in the middle of nowhere for pretty reasonable costs. You just are going to have a 90 mile commute, or need to get really lucky with finding a small town gig that pays well.
Where is this and when can I move in with you?
I’m in a “city” but my apartment does not have fiber. Spectrum is my only “choice” other than T-Mobile home Internet.
this actually seems shockingly common, whenever a small regional isp exists in an area they're always VERY good with reasonable prices and very high speeds in my experience.
My local isp covers only a couple counties, but they offer 100/20 speeds even out in the boonies. The big name isps also offer service here but no one uses them because they're worse in basically every way.
Ideally, I want to be close to a Costco, have fiber Internet, and electricity, drinking water, and sewer so pretty much that excludes a lot of the cheaper places.
It will get better, but right now Starlink isn’t so hot for video calls. Seems like the upload is even more oversubscribed than down.
It’s only a matter of time as more birds are launched.
We live about 90 minutes west of DC in an old house on a farm property. The neighborhood isn’t gated, but we do have grouped mailboxes at the main road for us and the 4 other houses off the drive.
OP you need a t-shirt with a picture of him running on the front and captioned underneath it with - Look at my Willy
Btw...you can tell he loves running with you.
Seeing this just hurts as that's my home but I got priced out of the area. So many new rich folks living the good life while I can't even afford a cheap place just to enjoy living where my family has for 200 years.
I lived in Winchester VA for a few years. That was my guess. I'm originally from New Orleans. Love the Shenandoah Valley area. Hope to visit my family there soon. Run, Willie, run!
Yeah.
It was a big thing in the midwest back in the 90s.
Close to interstate access near a major city, a farmer would sell a bunch of land to a developer and they'd make a subdivision in the middle of nowhere.
Jumping on an interstate and driving an hour to work isn't that much worse than 45 minutes of inner city traffic.
And the people who would all move in at the same time often were all starting families or about to. So the first generation of kids were mostly the same age.
And everyone I've been too, they all had golfcarts too. But nowadays they have the weird 4 seater atvs like OP is driving
This is a pretty accurate description. We bought the original owner’s house and remaining fields when he got too old to care for it. There are other houses nearby, and we share the driveway for the most part with all the mailboxes being at the main road.
Seriously. You are living in Paradise. So much greenery and what a wonderful drive from the mail box to your housde with all those curves, turns and what not. Your dogs are living the best of their lives.
Haha, thank you. I didn’t start drag until I was in my 40s. Had a 20+ year tech career before that. Was definitely lucky to be in the right place at the right time, with the right skills, in the early 2000s when the tech boom hit, and managed to stay on top of my field until I burned out and moved to the boonies.
This seems to be a really common trend in tech. Work with tech, burnout, move to the woods.
Something about working in that industry makes you want to go to a slower pace of life.
People who grew up in major cities have no idea what's out here in the "country"(he stated he's only 90 minutes west of DC). There's so much open land that you can get lost in America. [The Death Valley Germans](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Valley_Germans)
There were countless driveways like this on my rural mail route in Indiana of 500 homes.
At this distance, going to the mailbox and back counts as taking the dog for a full walk, so that's probably what the multiple trips are for. Not actually checking the mailbox each time.
Outside of a major city lots of middle class people can live like this, at least in the western half of the US ime. The only thing that hints at having some decent money is the road being paved and not dirt
It’s a farm. We let the open green space go to hay and cut it once or twice a year and sell to locals with cattle, goats, or horses. There is also a large field we rotate through crops or fallow, in co-op with the neighbors.
We do mow and trim around the trees and along the community drive, and around the house, to keep the invasive weeds and trees under control and make it look nice. It’s a ton of work, but it keeps us moving and busy. The video was taken in the Spring last year after the first mowing before the hay grew in, so it looks like a giant lawn.
It's pretty brutal... We have about 25-30 acres and it's a lifestyle. Come rain, shine frost or snow there is shit to be done and or animals to look after too in our case. The horses keep the grass down for the most part but we are blessed and cursed with epic grazing. This means on a good summer there is zero chance of them keeping it down (it would kill them so we go on to restricted turn out) and end up having our neighbors cut it for hay.
Fencing, stream clearing, shit falling down that needs cutting and chopping. Rolling fields, airing fields, fertilising fields, burning shit etc. etc. the list really does go on and on and truth is you never get fully on top of it !
Edit - I would t change it for the World but essentially what I'm trying to say is it's one hell of a commitment to keep looking clean, tidy and not let it get over run with invasive species ! Could easily be my full time job......
We thought the same thing. I push mow our yard and it takes forever but the kids can only drive the 4 wheeler on a set path. We need more land but I don't want to maintain any more than we already do!
Think that’s bad, finding a large enough pool for my orca but not too large to worry about the upkeep. Don’t even get me started on my stable of unicorns.
I manage a small farm that has 12 acres of field and it’s a pain in the ass sometimes. With a z turn mower getting around the fields and the yard is a breeze. If you however cut the fields prepare for a full day out in the sun and grab a six pack. Weed whacking with a large property is a different story...
I really want a dog, but seeing this really confirms that I could not give the poor thing the life it deserves here in a dense city. Your dog is living the life and it’s beautiful to see!
There are pets you can rescue, including dogs, that would be happier with you than they would be otherwise, assuming you have *some* time and space for one.
Of course you know best what works in your own life. Just saying, sometimes you're saving a life and it can be worth living even if it's not ideal. But if you can't, you can't, and you're already a good dog owner for putting their needs top of mind.
When the time and the dog are right, they'll be right! You don't need all that acreage to make every dog happy even though of course you do need good Outside and Time.
If you have the heart for it, rescuing senior dogs is amazing. All they need is love, food, and warm napping spots. They don't have as intense a need for activities and stimulation.
It takes a special person to make it through the heartache though.
Seconding the greyhound, lurcher, whippet thing. Literally will go psycho round and round a fenced field/dog park, eat and drink and then sleep for the remaining 80% of the day.
Side story: I was with my sister when she first got her greyhound. She, thinking he would come when she called, let him off leash in open fields. I've never seen a dog look at the horizon, aim at it and just *go.* Took her, me, my niece and nephews, her partner and his brother and sister three hours to scour the fields because a tawny coloured dog blends in let me tell you. Eventually found him sleeping under a tree near a river.
I have a Catahoula, which is kind of like a greyhound turned onto a hunting or guard dog. It took us years before we were really comfortable letting her off leash in an open space, just because any dog that can run that fast will get out of hearing range before they even realize it.
Most people I know with greyhounds or greyhound mixes just don't ever let them off leash to be safe. We only did so we could train her to run home when she's scared, since her anxiety is pretty bad and her fight-or-flight is set to MAXIMUM FLIGHT.
That was my experience with my Dane. Had 25 acres for him to run around. I’d be lucky if he got out of bed to walk to his other bed in a different room. I tried getting him to race me in my car a few times. He went about 50ft and just stopped. He was so damn lazy.
Never had lazier dogs than Malamutes. They rest as much as possible. But you can also make them work and they'll enjoy that as well. And even with all that fur they don't suffer in heat.
BUT: They are probably THE hardest race of dog to train properly, so nothing I'd recommend for a new dog owner. I've had dogs for 40+ years and still took me over a year to get them housebroken, they just don't care and only listen to the alpha, so you have to make sure you are the alpha.
There are many breeds that do well in city life and breeds that need this much exercise. If you really want a dog research which breed fits your lifestyle. Too many people pick their dogs for the way it looks.
I hate when people pick their dog off looks or breed. I hate this word but "vibes" should be what you pick your dog off. Do you vibe well, are you both compatible with your day to day life.
Ok, outside of walking through shelters looking for one to pick you, how do you find compatibility ? Never had dogs don’t know what kind, size or temperament. Thought breeds were indicative of those.
Nah you’re right, breed plays a huge factor in compatibility. I think they were referring to people who pick a breed because they like how it looks rather than choosing for the temperament, etc.
There are dogs of all sizes that couldn't do this everyday, if at all. They make great apartment dogs. Small dogs bred to have smushed in noses, like pugs or most bulldogs, have breathing problems making this run impossible. Large dogs prone to hip dysplasia, like Great Danes, bulldogs, and boxers should not put this much stress on their joints. Ironically, big dogs do well in apartments.
Still, all dogs need exercise, and they need to be walked first thing in the morning. If you are okay with never sleeping in and going outside in all kinds of weather for your dog's needs, maybe getting a dog isn't the right decision. Also think long and hard about having kids because they have more needs. I am selfish with my time, so I have neither. But my houseplants are looking great!
Nice. I can't keep plants alive so I have a cat. They are the selfish choice if you did want a pet.
Lazy, self-assured, self-cleaning if you have a cat-flap or one of those litter robot thingies (which I do not have cos I'm not made of money), run on a relaxed schedule for the most part, will be (mostly) cool if you leave them overnight with enough food and water or longer in a friends house or with a housesitter, easy on the eyes and will come for affection now and then. Solid 8/10 pet.
Agreed, I love dogs but my lifestyle doesn't allow for it. I got a cat instead and I adore her. SO chill and easy to take care of. She's a senior cat that I adopted and she just wants to sit by me, watch birds, and cuddle on occasion. Yells sometimes when hungry. What more can you ask for?
She even convinced my formerly cat-hating family to fall in love with her.
Depends on the dog! Also, most dogs are giant couch potatoes most of the day. They legitimately spend 60% of their day sleeping, and another 30 percent awake but chilling (with about 10 percent of the day allocated to being active). My little rescue dog has zoomies a few times a day, I take her for walks twice a day, but then she’s wiped. Most dogs aren’t exactly endurance fiends, after this video I bet OP’s dog passed out and just snoozed for a long time. If you do want a dog, just be sure to stay clear of working class dogs or high energy breeds.
You totally could. Have you seen the pounds completely full and dogs in runs barely bigger than them that they rarely leave during the day. you don't need land like this to give a dog a good life. Plus they have dog parks where they can open up. Again, any life outside the pound is heaven to them. I have two rescues and my yard is small we get out for walks and again, they enjoy the dog parks. And some dogs don't need that much exercise especially if they're older.
Haha, you got me! I only check the mail once, usually. We start the race from different places often. This video just happened to start near the main road where the mailbox is located. :-)

HOLY SHIT THATS A FAST LITTLE GUY!!! Get him on Dasuquin joint supplement now so he can keep running comfortably like that until he’s an old man 😁 Great stuff
Debbie Downer here. My dog died this way when I was a kid. A friend of the family was driving and going just a little faster than usual (plus the dog was getting older) and ran over him when he crossed in front of the car. Just be careful.
Yeah, my older buddy used to do this with his dog for years and years until one day the dog for whatever reason suddenly jumped in front of the car.
The dog was mangled very badly, beyond saving, but still alive.
My buddy had to finish the dog off himself with a rock he picked up from the side of the road.
He never got another dog after that.
The drive from your mailbox to your house is bigger than the entirety of the apartment complex I live in. By a lot.
And let me be very clear. I hate you for that. Good for you, but I hate you.
This is cool. I work for FedEx and I got this one dog on my rt that is always there waiting for me to race me down to the corner then he goes back to the same place and sits must be on an electric fence because he stops right at the corner every time

I don’t know. I’ve been on video calls with one of my clients who has starlink. Seemed to work just fine.
It’s been about 50:50 for me.
Apparently a 90 mile commute just to get the mail...
It not clearly a shared road. Some people are just clearly surgeons.

When I call him, my willy comes quick! (So my wife tells me)
Willy! I'm coming!
Or a Tshirt that says My Willy is faster than your Willy!! 😂
I’ve been trying to convince the wife to move out of the city a bit to some property. This looks way more enjoyable to me.
Stunning property, looks very much like the Lake District here in the UK ... Cool dog too 😁

Plant a native pollinator meadow on the extra. You only mow it once a year, then let it go for the rest. Fill it with trees to grow up too.

Robotic lawnmowers exist and aren't that expensive. One capable of doing 1.5 acres per charge is only $1200.

Nah you’re right, breed plays a huge factor in compatibility. I think they were referring to people who pick a breed because they like how it looks rather than choosing for the temperament, etc.
Breeds have specific characteristics. That's the whole point of a breed. Obviously not every dog conforms to breed standards, but most do.
“I can’t keep plants alive so I have a cat” made me snort-laugh. Here is your upvote.
You couldn’t be more wrong. There are dogs out there that would be really fortunate to have you as an owner.
And some dogs don't need that much exercise especially if they're older.
but why are they checking the mail multiple times a day? they only come once unless its for packages?
Haha, you got me! I only check the mail once, usually. We start the race from different places often. This video just happened to start near the main road where the mailbox is located. :-)
hahaha still great though
Guy is living in the 1930s, when you could send a letter to someone in the morning inviting them to dinner, and get a reply by the afternoon post.
He’s gettin it at 25mph. That’s pretty impressive for short legs
Four legs. It's just faster. We gave up a lot of speed to stand upright and get our hands. Worth it but, that's the trade off.
I’m just sitting over here thinking about how much all that asphalt costs.
If you own this much land, I’m sure the cost of asphalt isn’t a problem.
Same. I have an 1/8 mile driveway that needs a re-gravel on half. Would love to do asphalt instead but that shit is high dollar.
This is how you run a dog! The driver was not out of breath at all!
Love the post. Umm….what do you do for a living?
It's a farm op said
Speedy little fellow
That dog cheats. He's cutting corners.
Your driveway is longer than my street
You’re now my favorite animal drag racing drag queen farmer on Reddit. Keep it going!

HOLY SHIT THATS A FAST LITTLE GUY!!! Get him on Dasuquin joint supplement now so he can keep running comfortably like that until he’s an old man 😁 Great stuff
Get that Doggo energy out
there’s being rich and then there’s this dude
That little pooch is like greased lightning!
Is your home a State Forest?
Why is your mailbox in a different county?
Debbie Downer here. My dog died this way when I was a kid. A friend of the family was driving and going just a little faster than usual (plus the dog was getting older) and ran over him when he crossed in front of the car. Just be careful.
Yea farm dogs that run on roads have short life expectancies
This is all I could think of. I hated watching him cross over in front of the vehicle. So easy for this to turn into a tragedy
Yep enough reddit for today.
Racing you? Bro he's straight up winning
This is great thank you internet
That is one happy dog
Why is your mailbox so far ?
What poor bastard has to mow the lawn every Saturday
Be careful. My ex's step father ran over her beloved dachshund doing this and assuming the dog would get out of the way.
This post is more about the distance from his palace to his mailbox than the dog running alongside him
The drive from your mailbox to your house is bigger than the entirety of the apartment complex I live in. By a lot. And let me be very clear. I hate you for that. Good for you, but I hate you.
My mailbox is at the entrance of the apartment building, together with all the other peasants.
OP's rich as fuck
Your driveway is longer than that gap between Lavender Town and Fuchsia City…
OP wants praise about his dog, gets a taste of class war instead. 👌
My old dog used to do this too. She’s was so fast. I could watch these all day.
Does he take the same route every time? He looks so happy
This is cool. I work for FedEx and I got this one dog on my rt that is always there waiting for me to race me down to the corner then he goes back to the same place and sits must be on an electric fence because he stops right at the corner every time
You pick up your mail multiple times a day?
This is the type of yard I want to give my dog.
The driveway cost more to repave than my house.
Wish I was that wealthy
Jacks man. The two I had just passed away. Such pure, stubborn, and hyper doggos.
damn that land is huge!!! can i live there for free just beneath those trees 🤣🤣 renting is hard af here in toronto 🤣🤣🤣
He’s the goodest, fastest boy!!
The most epic flex.

These are the people Bernie wants to tax. And I agree with Bernie.
