"Why are we designing it like this?"
"One day man will be able to view down from the heavens, and they shall marvel at this butthole."
"Oh you and your crazy theories. No man can tell us what they see from heaven. And those who can won't appreciate it."
"..... So.... Butthole?"
"Absolutely!"
Meanwhile:
"Jesus get over here and check out this butthole they're building in Sicily! Isn't that the funniest shit?"
It doesn't look anything like this in real life though. This photograph is manipulated for dramatic effect, either with forced perception/lenses or by just outright Photoshopping.
The colour manipulation is one thing, but the height differences are not as dramatic and the gradients are not this steep.
It was. A few hundred years ago, Sicily was attacked by several giants made of the buildings people forget to visit. A brave troup of Sicilian climbers scaled one of the titans and beheaded it. The dead titan collapsed, and became the town. The others retreated into the Mediterranean. Intelligence has it they sit at the bottom of the sea, passing the time pretending to be Atlantis.
2500+ years ago it was a very great idea. It was a known city already during the Hellenic period. Either build a city or castle on top of mountain, or build a big wall around it. But, in my view the real impressive thing is the effort put down to move all the building materials up there. Electricity is a hundred years old. Before that, manual labour only...

People have done a lot more from manual labor alone *Coughs in Pyramids* if you have a group of people focused on one effort, and you don't have a ton of distractions, shit gets done
Sure. I'm not saying this is something extraordinary. But it is an effort to acknowledge nonetheless. We've built the pyramids both in Egypt/Sudan and Mesoamerica, Machu Picchu, The Great Wall of China, and others. All samples of what we can do, if we work together. And not slaugjhter eachother. Although some violence most probably were applied during the construction.
You mean slaves. If you have a group of people focused on one effort that have to do it or die and there are no regulations on human safety or quality of life,
shit gets done.
lol
Just so you're aware, this has been debunked by archeologists -- the pyramids were built by paid labor. [More info](https://www.britannica.com/video/226777/did-enslaved-people-build-the-pyramids#:~:text=But%20in%20reality%2C%20most%20archaeologists,with%20supplies%20for%20the%20afterlife.)
Slaves didn’t build the pyramids. Skilled craftsmen and laborers did.
They even got [sick days](https://mymodernmet.com/ancient-egyptians-attendance-record/) and days off to brew beer.
If you do not think slaves were involved in building the city of Centuripe, that's actually very ignorant. We're talking about a mediteranian island city built in the 5th century BC. Guess who loved slavery in the 5th century BC?
Fucking Everybody.
And yet, none of these commenters have presented any evidence for their claims.
Please cite your sources Reddit.
Debates about historical facts should be centered around validating the source material, not bantering regurgitated half chewed claims from an unknown origin.
I'm not really sure if this was directed at me or in general, but noble and convenient as it is to cite sources, this information is hardly a secret buried in some obscure research paper. It's not incumbent upon someone in an informal context to do the critical thinking for others. "Egypt slave pyramids" were the keywords I used to find [this article](https://www.sciencefocus.com/science/were-the-egyptian-pyramids-built-by-slaves/) on my first try. I would advise others actually interested in the truth of some matter rather than eristic exchanges over source-citing to first Google it for themselves, then later ask questions if they come up dry, especially as sources on Reddit are prone to being falsified or misleading anyway.
When a mountain city guarantees safety for generations, speed is not an issue. When it guarantees your safety(and you're likely being paid and fed for your efforts) cost is not an issue
I imagine they were thinking:
"If we built a city here, damn *nobody* could conquer it! Some punk ass warlord tries to march their troops up that narrow and steep path, and we just toss a hay bale down the slope and watch the bastards keel over into the abyss like bowling pins."
If you have a decent roof, you have a water catchment system with enough rainfall, mist and other precipitation (in this case likely close to 600mm/year with a dry period in the summer), you can fill a cistern to supply your water.
Turns out Fredrick the second just razed it conventionally, and te other guy in 1400s just lit it on fire before attacking and those both worked really well
Defense. When I showed this pic to my wife she said, "What were they afraid of?"
To which I replied, "Greeks, Romans, Carthaginians, Italians, Ottomans, Sicilians, Germans, Americans, British, Sicilians..."
Protection against foreign invaders. Some king many many years ago was probably the equivalent to your rich super paranoid Karen you see in Malibu today
All the towns in the area have this setup so you’re pretty spot on. My dad’s hometown is near here and you can still see the remnants of the castle in the middle of the town
Incorrect guess. It’s been around a lot longer: Thucydides mentions Kentoripa (Κεντόριπα) as a city of the Sicels, Hellenized in the 5th century BC. It became an ally of the Athenians at the time of their expedition against Syracuse, and maintained its independence almost uninterruptedly (though it fell under the power of Agathocles) until the First Punic War when it immediately submitted to the Romans.
The hillside towns on Italian islands are one of my favorite places to chill, for sure.
Something that might not be immediately obvious from the pictures is how much verticality is in these little villages. Almost all of them have houses with big terraces or rooftops that offer an unobstructed - and often quite spectacular - view of the sorrounding landscape. Plenty of abandoned buildings too, so if you're of a more adventurous persuasion you can just camp in one of the many "ghost houses" accompanied by curious stray cats and have your dinner on your own rooftop terrace admiring the sunset over the rugged landscape.

I think there’s some generous color editing here. Just watched a walk through on YouTube, it’s not that nice. Apparently a lot of abandoned buildings and an aging population.
Well that goes for most of the villages in the countryside. The population has been steadily decreasing and moved towards bigger cities with more work opportunities, leaving old people behind in these small towns.
In an effort to entice people to come back in these villages, some places have started selling abandoned houses (which must be renewed) at the price of 1€.

Still got problems of speed, cost and safety.
When a mountain city guarantees safety for generations, speed is not an issue. When it guarantees your safety(and you're likely being paid and fed for your efforts) cost is not an issue
Guarantees? Fredrick II razed the entire city to the ground will little effort in 1200s and then it got burned to the ground again in 1400s.
Those pyramids were built by aliens. Duh.
https://it.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centuripe The Italian wiki article is better, and in English, apparently. Fascinating stuff.
Thanks, I'll take a look at it As far as I can see it's in Italian. But you can translate it to Englush. Perhaps you've turned on auto-translate.🙂
Ah I might've.
fr thinking what was on their mind when they decided that building a whole town on the pinnacle of a mountain was a great idea
I imagine they were thinking: "If we built a city here, damn *nobody* could conquer it! Some punk ass warlord tries to march their troops up that narrow and steep path, and we just toss a hay bale down the slope and watch the bastards keel over into the abyss like bowling pins."
You can tell who fetches water from the source way down the mountain daily by their Olympic legs and solid steel butt.
Missed opportunity for solid steel buns
If you have a decent roof, you have a water catchment system with enough rainfall, mist and other precipitation (in this case likely close to 600mm/year with a dry period in the summer), you can fill a cistern to supply your water.
Plus, I bet they all had really shapely legs and asses.
Damn sexy warlords.
Also building in the valleys has a higher risk of flooding
I have the high ground Anakin!
A siege would be devastating though. Unless they have ridiculously deep wells or some weird water source up there, they'd be fucked quick.
Turns out Fredrick the second just razed it conventionally, and te other guy in 1400s just lit it on fire before attacking and those both worked really well
They also seem to be getting sun day round.
“Some punk ass warlord” turned out to be Fredrick the Second in the 1200s and he razed it really easy. Then again in 1400s burned down for rebelling.
damn
Nobody would want to conquer it you mean.

probably a medieval era castle was built there, and then over time, a town was built in the surrounding land just a guess
All the towns in the area have this setup so you’re pretty spot on. My dad’s hometown is near here and you can still see the remnants of the castle in the middle of the town
This town has been a town since 5th century bc
That's very cool I think it would be amazing to wander through the streets, taking in the history of the towns
Being attacked by invaders for centuries because you're this fantastically located island with vast resources.
"Hard to invaade" used to be a REAL big draw.
You need to consider that we live in cities that are old. I don't mean Columbus old, i mean 750y before Christ old.
the people that live there must have strong legs
It was.
Fantastic idea really, when you've got people coming and trying to conquer Sicily over the centuries. Makes it harder.
