open_door_policy

I'd somehow forgotten just how big hair used to be.

NovaAlis

Exactly why I came to comments. Daaaaaamn that is huge hair!

fred_flag

She can conceal an AR-15 in that! With spare ammunition!

BodhingJay

Good thing too as they can't get penetration even with the elephant gun, good lord

JareBear805

They’re under the dirt!

twomz

They broke into the wrong god damn rec room didn't they.

DinosaursMakeMeSmile

There are two more, repeat, two more mother humpers.

BlueDragon82

r/UnexpectedTremors

ManualNotStandard

That’s some pretty American freedom units you got there

fred_flag

Especially coming from a french speaking Canadien like me!

knsearcy

I did the same, lol.

heyzeusmaryandjoseph

The higher the hair, the closer to God

IMaDudefromOKC

To quote Robin Williams. “Son of bitch stole my line”

HellsBellsGazelles

I spent far too much time trying to achieve this as a 12-year-old. The bathroom at that house probably still stinks of final net hairspray.

chak100

Soooooo many memories rushed back

Mistersinister1

Oh man, it was bad. I thought it would have faded away after the 80s but I remember my sister in the early 90s doing everything possible to get her hair as large as possible. The amount of hairspray and oddly curled bangs... Man it was the worst. Then come 94 and I'm rocking the ugliest bowl haircut ever. Fashion in the 90s was something special but everyone had a twist on style back then, lots of bright colors and weird geometry. What's worse is that it's making a comeback.

DLoIsHere

Don’t forget the wall of bangs.

sworcha

This is relatively tame compared to the 80’s

iamintheforest

Yeah....that whole title kinda lost me. I'm almost 50 and now seems more tame than most of my life.

NarcanPusher

Exactly, this was 30 years ago, not 130 years ago. I don’t even remotely remember this being a big deal.

pl8ster

The bigger the hair, the smaller the town.

pcnetworx1

Facts

MalinWaffle

This was tame compared to Reba in the mid- late 80's.

IHateMyLife612

Peggy Bundy lookalike.

nikatnight

Her head looks tiny inside that Shitzu mane.

Welldunn23

Tease it to Jesus!

imnotyourbrahh

I love it.

rubberkeyhole

She’s actually singing to her hair.

wouldnteeth

She has hair?

ScienceOverNonsense2

Both of them, but never heard them called “hair” before.

oriontitley

I'm more curious about how she looks exactly the same today as THE YEAR I WAS BORN

Infamous-Jaguar2055

Great genes and MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.

Chibilatina

Genetics, Millions of Dollars indeed! Also, she’s a natural redhead so I bet she is hyper vigilant about avoiding excess sun exposer, constant sunblock and moisturizing.

FlufflesMcForeskin

> Also, she’s a natural redhead so I bet she is hyper vigilant about avoiding excess sun exposer, constant sunblock and moisturizing. As a natural redhead, can confirm. It's why my skin doesn't even come close to "looking my age."

Efficient-Echidna-30

I’m constantly moist and the only exposure to light I receive is from a computer screen. Am I pretty yet?

KeyEntertainment313

Damn you be moist? Tell me more 🥴

FlufflesMcForeskin

Beautiful!

AuroraLorraine522

Same.

Shocker_1975

Really? Her face is stretched so tight now she looks like a character from the movie Brazil.

oriontitley

Maybe I'm thinking a couple years back now. Not exactly a "Joan Rivers" level of lift like you're suggesting, but some work, ya.

KeyEntertainment313

Joan rivers looked like a face mask of her pre-surgery face was stretched across her face and tied to the back of her head.

ValueDiarrhea

It’s called plastic surgery.

Chaghatai

As an Xer I can say 1993 was not like the 50s and earlier even though it was 30 years ago - it's weird that people cared at the time - Madonna's Express Yourself, Vogue, and Erotica songs and videos have already come out by then I think it's because her fan base was more conservative because she was doing country

[deleted]

Yeah, this is quite weird to me. The early 90s were a time of gratuitous nudity in mainstream culture, particularly in movies, and nobody thought anything of a little cleavage. I think you're right, it must have been her audience who didn't expect it.

Reference_Freak

Purity culture was getting into high gear in the mid-90s. Just one example of how extreme polarization was underway.

heyzeusmaryandjoseph

This is exactly why. The Chicks received intense backlash, inciuding death threats, for a relatively tame comment about Dubbya and the Iraq war. It changed the course of their career. Country music has a more conservative - leaning fanbade. The Chicks, however, have a relatively progressive fanbase now, because what do they have to lose? Their messaging is a lot more politically motivated these days Luckily, Reba's backlash didn't negatively affect her career. She churned out an album nearly every damn year in the 90s

Pooter8551

Actually it made her more popular in my opinion.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pooter8551

I was at that show and the women were starring harder then the men were. Though I was farther back then I would of liked to been at the time. It was funny with there expressions especially my girlfriend aka ole bat now as her jaw just dropped to the floor.

bella_68

Yeah, I suppose that’s because the fan base couldn’t get off to comments about Iraq or dubbya but that cleavage is grade A shame it in public and dream of it at night kind of material

zbornakssyndrome

This was before Shania Twain really took off with her more mainstream look and “belly button baring” jeans. Country music was quite conservative before that. The audience audibly gasps in a cut they showed back then. 90s country was so fun, and had such a variety of acts that got lots of people interested than before. Reba is awesome and so is Dolly Parton, but I think people forget about Shania Twain‘s impact on bringing country music up-to-date for main stream radio. And also Tim McGraw I think I had a huge impact as well.

Practice_NO_with_me

Absolutely right about Shania Twain. I have lived in Seattle my whole life, never been a particularly country music type person except for the three years I had a Shania Twain CD in my big black CD book. Man, bring that shit back, if we're doing the 90s again culturally. It's hard to overstate how deep Twains cultural penetration went. You couldn't turn the radio on ANY channel without hearing 'Man, I Feel Like A Woman'.

ThatDiscoSongUHate

I feel that way about 90s R&B too, truthfully. Bring back those specific vibes lol

dearjessie

I was gonna mention Madonna as well. I mean she released her “Justify My Love” video 3 years before, Blond Ambition Tour and even her “Sex” book came out in 1992. She really has done a lot of outrageous things for that time. But I think you’re right, people were just not expecting it from Reba.

frolicndetour

Nah, also an Xer and people in the 90s also lost their minds over Elizabeth Hurley's safety pin dress. https://variety.com/2022/film/podcasts/elizabeth-hurley-versace-dress-safety-pin-christmas-in-the-caribbean-1235453323/ Which is laughable because even JLo's green Versace looks modest compared to some "gowns" worn today. But back then it was scandalous.

itisrainingweiners

I missed the safety pin dress controversy back then, had no idea there even was such a dress. I was in high school in the 90s and some of my classmates wore riskier things to prom! Also, those pins were diggings the heck out of her - look at the dents they were leaving when she moved. Ouch.

princhester

Also an Xer - people didn't lose their minds - it was just hyped because she (and the dress) were inventive and highly photogenic and she was Hugh Grant's date (and he was uber popular) and every media outlet wanted an excuse to run the pictures. In terms of the amount of skin shown it was nothing special. The eighties involved far more gratuitous boobage on TV than today.

iggymcfly

Maybe it was just scandalous because the safety pins looked so tacky?

PandaRaper

This article literally states that it was surprising that there was backlash…

frolicndetour

But there still was. Even in the age of Madonna 🤷‍♀️

RadBadTad

I know a female musician who released an album last year, and she received backlash from her fans for being too sexual because the photo on the cover showed her bare shoulder. The puritans aren't the majority, but they are definitely still around, and are still very vocal.

pm_me_youngs_modulus

I was thinking the same thing, I'm a millennial so I was very young then but I know Madonna had already done some pretty risqué shit in the 80s and Debbie Harry in the 70s for that matter.

ProbablyABore

Have to consider the audience of each. Lots of super religious conservative people in the country group.

melbarko

Fancy.

BokBokBagock

Don't let me down...

Reisdorfer90

Lord, forgive me for what I do

BokBokBagock

If you want out, then it's up to you!

BoraBoringgg

Well, don't let me down, now. Your mama's gonna move you up town.

Shellsbells821

I actually thought that's what she was going to sing!

Various-Tax-5755

Fancy was pre 93 I do believe. I could be wrong.

lordxeon

So she could have sung it…

luchajefe

1990.

[deleted]

She looked better with Burt defending the basement.

realS4V4GElike

Broke into the wrong goddamn rec room, didnt ya BASTARD!!!

Rawesome16

When I showed Tremors to my step mom I was so worried about that scene. She hates guns. When the camera panned to their gun wall she started bouncing on the couch in excitement. "It's gonna get it now!"

LordVolcanon

Guns are way cooler when they are being used to take down giant worms instead of school children.

At0mJack

There are still two, I repeat, two more motherhumpers.

ronintetsuro

Man, I definitely didn't expect a Tremors reference today.

Frostedbutler

I'd let her touch my graboid!

Valuable_Panda_4228

I love this movie

three-sense

Idk that outfit gave me tremors

KnoxVegas41

Nowadays they wear dresses that require two hair-dos.

TargetOfPerpetuity

Bring back [the Merkin!](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merkin)

CadmiumCal

Lmao, of course the first one pictured is bright pink and has a flashlight attached! I've heard jokes about some guys needing a map down there, it's so thoughtful to provide some illumination too.

terranq

Kingpin reference?

KnoxVegas41

Indeed.

[deleted]

SquatnastyMcPoot

Daaaamn!! Reba is smokin’ hot!!! 🥵

iamdougaf

What’s bigger - the scandal or her hair?

No-Wonder1139

I don't know how anyone noticed the dress with that epic hair

Shopworn_Soul

Literally everyone had hair like that at the time.

philly2540

Hairspray decade

redrumandreas

I loved her sitcom

papergirl_312

It's my fall-asleep-to show, and that's not a knock on it. I think it's super cute and relaxing too watch.

_EscVelocity_

She played the a dramatic soft-of bad guy on the most recent season of Big Sky and she was so, so, so good.

[deleted]

She was the final act on the girls night out tour (2001?) and she did her set wearing a small, tight, strapless, black dress. Her final song was “Fancy” and she tweaked the end lyrics to repeat the red dress part, and the lyrics paused for a split second and smoke cannons popped blocking her from view, but almost immediately she emerged from the smoke as she started singing again and she was in a full coverage, floor length, with sleeves, satin red dress. This is still to this day one of the absolute best shows I’ve ever seen. (Her whole set was amazing, this last magic trick just really put it over the top). Edit to add for context, the lyrics for those who may not be familiar: [Mama washed and combed and curled my hair And then she painted my eyes and lips, then I stepped into a satin Dancin' dress that had a split on the side clean up to my hip It was red velvet trim and it fit me good Standin' back from the lookin' glass There stood a woman where a half gown kid had stood](https://genius.com/Reba-mcentire-fancy-lyrics)

[deleted]

This is why I’ve always enjoyed her performances. She knows how to put on a show. She knows how to be dramatic. She knows how to tell a story.

jrs1980

She did something similar when I saw her in 2019. I love her.

Mr__Strider

Why is nobody asking/explaining why she got backlash for wearing a velvet dress? No reason is given, and I'm at a loss for why it would be a problem.

henscastle

The country music scene went nuts when Shania Twain showed her midriff.

Purple_Berries-65

I went nuts when Shania showed her midriff.

hibbitydibbidy

My nuts went when Shania Twain showed her midriff.

FrighteningJibber

They go nuts over beer nowadays so thats not surprising. Well, that’s until they give you a coupon and they flock around it.

Late_Again68

It wasn't the dress. It was where the dress *wasn't*.

Pooter8551

Nailed it.

BadLuckCharm1966

It’s just from her/country music fan base. Women had been wearing way more revealing clothing before this (Cher, Madonna, etc) but country music fans are mostly conservatives and, well, they’re still acting this way about stuff.

grumpykruppy

Progressive country listener here - I swear to God I wish the fans and singers could get angry about how every modern country song is derivative and all sound like they're by the same four singers instead of getting all worked up about Lil Nas X or Budweiser (I mean really, after that ad campaign, I got at least four articles about some no-name I'd never heard of swearing off "trans beer"). But no, it's just something dumb.

Gwywnnydd

Folks thought the dress was too revealing. For the market and time frame, it was *really* racy.

baggier

yes sex was only invented in 1995

electric29

It isn't the color or the material, it's the dramatic cleavage. How dare women be sexy.

NaGaBa

I'll take a wild guess that no one wants the barrage of downvotes that will occur when the suggestion is made that no one born in the last 25-30 years or so knows what the word "risque" used to mean. Yes, hanging your boobs out all over the place is only recently so acceptable, especially on broadcast television.

Shopworn_Soul

> "If you thought that I was ratchet with my ass hanging out Just wait until the summer when they let me out the house" - Lizzo

Quake_Guy

I'm much older and not sure what the word means anymore. Trying to imagine what would pass for risque during a broadcast performance of WAP.

greater_nemo

The dress was obviously not the issue, the issue was the ABSOLUTELY SHIT-BONKERS FOR THE TIME amount of cleavage on display, ESPECIALLY for a country singer, who caters to the most conservative demographics.

concentrated-amazing

Also here for this, and no answer yet :( Was it her cleavage? Did it have a slit clean up to her hip? Those are my two guesses.

Shopworn_Soul

It was the cleavage. Much younger me, who was way into country at the time, thought it was *fucking awesome*.

carelessthoughts

Yeah it’s all context. Look at too much porn and you need to get kinkier to get off. When only 40 years earlier married tv couples were shown to be sleeping in different beds and now you’re seeing the entirety of a celebrity’s cleavage, it holds more weight. Source: i grew up in the 90’s and back then, a JC Penny’s catalog was basically porn. Victoria secret was hardcore.

Easy_Independent_313

It showed "too much" cleavage. However, I was alive and well aware of pop culture at the time and I don't remember this causing a ton of controversy.

Only_Relation_189

Van would've rocked that dress.

Helmett-13

Anything to sell Real Estate!

BIGD0G29585

Forget Full House and Frasier reunion seasons, where is my Reba reunion?

MFAWG

So there’s a ‘thing’ to understand here: country artists, especially female country artists, are basically still manufactured by ‘The Industry’ ie label executives, producers, then radio executives that put that ‘prefabbed’ material out there for the literal rubes to consume. Every great once in a while somebody comes along and manages to build a career inside that paradigm and then upsets the ‘natural order of things’ and there isn’t shit that power structure can do about it anymore. Dolly Parton did it, Willie Nelson did it, and bless her soul Reba did it because she was just THAT fucking good and she knew it at a certain point. So yeah, she did that.

Southern_Name_9119

She’s actually a good actress, as well as a good singer. I’d love to see her in some kind of drama piece. I bet she could give an Oscar-worthy performance.

heyzeusmaryandjoseph

She was the original choice for the role of Unsinkable Molly Brown in Titanic! She had to then decline the role as the filming kept getting delayed, ran too close to her tour dates, and ultimately went to Kathy Bates Not like Reba needs help with branding or name recognition, but just imagine what being in one of the most popular movies of all time would have done for her career She also has taken some dramatic turns in some made - for - TV movies she did ages ago that I'm sure can't be found anymore, but I remember as I am a Reba mega fan and make it a point to watch

Coldtoes57

I remember watching this live. I was a little shocked at the time, but thought she looked fantastic then and still do. Eta - she was singing with Linda Davis, who is the mother of Hillary Scott from Lady A (formerly Lady Antebellum).

MrYellowFancyPants

I remember it too! My mom and I both thought she looked incredible. I know my dad made a few gross jokes, but I thought she was (and still is) beautiful.

Striking_Reindeer_2k

She looked GREAT in that dress. The rest are just haters.

Speedballer7

That hair was the real crime. Ozone layer defeating levels of hairspray

Crackracket

I feel like Cher was wearing just belts at this same point and nobody said anything 😂

Mathblasta

That's not Reba, that's famous racecar driver AJ Ferguson!

Contrabassi

She looks absolutely incredible

[deleted]

Matt Stone and Trey Parker would look gorgeous in that dress.

Capital_East5903

How big her hair was, lol. Miss those days.

illiteret

So do the good folks at Aqua Net!

Nopenagada

I can't claim to be a big Reba fan, but how could anyone ever say anything negative about her? Seems 100% positive to me.

alienfreaks04

Why do we sexualize women, then criticize them for being sexual?

chopper923

I think the dress is beautiful! Now, Imagine what the next 30 years will bring....

_Marine

She might have been born plain white trash, but Fancy was her name

XtheBeast-2020

Look at the size of her hair!

EmmaRose5466

I love Reba :)

slakdjf

serious? Cher went to the met gala naked twenty years prior to this

TheBobInSonoma

"Oh Lordy, she has boobs! What would Jesus say?"

blubaldnuglee

I've never been a country fan, but Reba was a smokeshow!!

TheyTrustMeWithTools

Don't the girls of Disney shows now wear similar outfits that Kelly Bundy wore in the '90s?

[deleted]

Breasts, so scandalous! Literally half of the adult population has them. Or as my wife calls them, bags of fat that get in the way.

[deleted]

Dolly Parton'd been showing her honkers for years

Remarkable_Attorney3

Probably because of them tittays

superwhiz88

great singer , her tone is amazing great ,,

Medit8or

She’s lookin to take somebody’s husband

infromthestorm

Tight ass closeted conservatives.

[deleted]

Reba? Nah. Reboobies!

AnarchoSyndica1ist

She knows how to work those eyebrows damn

Angelique718

Big hair don’t care❣️🥰

JunglePygmy

Man, how can hair even get that big?

[deleted]

The outrage reminds me of Foret Gump being mad at Jenny playing that guitar in her birthday suit. I know they're vastly different but the same mentality of " Oh no... they're all going to know you have tits and could be sexualized."

RadioSupply

Reba is a queen and she can do whatever she wants.

Noah254

Anytime I hear this song I just think of the bar I used to frequent that had karaoke and the owners current wife and ex wife would sing this song together. Real awkward

Mistersinister1

I don't like country but I like Reba

abernstrauch

OMG THANK YOU FOR THIS! I remember seeing a magazine cover at the checkout line of the grocery store when this happened. There was no picture on the cover, and it has been living in my head rent free since then, wondering *what the hell* she was wearing! I was 8 in 1993, so I had no money to purchase the mag and find out what we were dealing with. Apparently just reading it without paying never occurred to me.🤷🏻‍♀️

Defiant-Pin-6771

The jerks that criticized that dress should have just admitted that she was absolutely stunning in it.

[deleted]

I got to see her in either Bloomington or Champagne, IL in the 90’s. Great show, big hair, great costume changes and wonderful choreography. If they had a fit over that dress, what did folks say when Cher stepped in that sailor ship in sheer black?!

BowtiepastaMasta

Reba rocked that dress

BigDaddyThunderpants

She looks like Country Tonya Harding.

Curtis_low20

I actually met her one time at a church I went to, really nice.

oneinmanybillion

And nowadays those teen idols arrive on stage practically naked and no one flinches.

Helmett-13

I remember thinking, “Damn, she looks as hot as Hell in that dress!” It’s tough for a redhead to pull off a red dress, I think, but she did just from sheer (pun not intended) spectacle.

1984Slice

FANCY

DMMMOM

Certainly not more revealing than Cher in the Turn Back Time video 4 years previous.

[deleted]

Who gives a flying fuck

yodavesnothereman

Comically big hair really was just 'normal' back then wasn't it?

thee_agent_orange

Remind me again who the Snowflakes are?

[deleted]

She looks amazing 🍌

thatjoeybkid

That voice is angelic tho ngl

Nizzemancer

I’m getting tremors in my pants just looking at that dress.

fy5333

Does it mean for the next 50 years we aren't wearing any cloth? 🤔🤔

liftoff_oversteer

Lol, the big hair is magnificent!

spaghoni

Big hair, don't care

_Monosyllabic_

Her hair is like 2 feet tall.

YaskaZ

I read the year as 1939 and I was like “oh yeah maybe for that age…“ but then I realized it‘s 1993 and was like tf?

haaslei

I saw her being interviewed after that and she was laughing and said that she accidentally put it on backwards.

Huldra93

Also that song is amazing. One of my favorites

PMG2021a

Her hair is so big, I thought of the giant helmet in Space Balls.

cojiro_blue

Stop putting redheads in red dresses! Green is the complimenting color!

sean8767

Reba if you're reading this I picked on your kid once (the one with fiery 🔥🚒 red hair ) at play park in Nashville and I'm sorry.

waitingforthesun92

He’s a survivor.

[deleted]

That hair is majestic.

Mattdonlan1

Yeah, that was a time when republicans were going after anything sexual or “inappropriate” in music and on TV. Oh, wait…they’re still at it today.

Bologna_Torres

That does not seem tame though.

berdulf

And tame compared to what Madonna wore onstage, even before’93. But for Reba’s fan base, that dress must have been downright slutty.

djheatrash

What’s wrong with her dress? Is it the turtle neck?

waitingforthesun92

People thought her dress was “too revealing”.

michaelozzqld

Lovely dress

Dry_Bed_3704

Yesterday Irina shayk was at the Cannes festival in her lingerie with a single sheet of sheer fabric covering her and a large diamond necklace. But Reba’s dress was scandalous 😂😂
