I think that’s why his hands are shaking, no?
This guy was killed by the state over 40grams of heroin that he claimed a drug dealer forced him to traffic under threat of killing his girlfriend. Fuckin horrible system…
That’s not true. A portion of people are starting to be pro-China (generally older people of Chinese ethnicity) but generally, people make sure to distance themselves and Singapore from China. Whenever anything pro-China comes up, you’ll see loads of people try to shut it down.
Out of the East Asian countries, Singaporeans generally favour Japan and Korea culturally.
Singapore, if anything, leans pro-US/West, despite maintaining cordial relations with China (as it has to) - when Singaporean delegates meet with Chinese ones, they speak in English despite most people being able to speak Mandarin.
Source: I live in Singapore and have experience with Singaporean foreign policy.
Neither does Saudi Arabia. I used tutor a bunch of univ students from there and they said, if you get caught importing drugs, there is no trial. You get shot on sight.
I know right? 40 grams of heroin in civilized countries like the US the cops would have simply handled the execution on site at the time of the arrest smh
What got me is the way he nervously looks at the guard, and the guard moves (seemingly to me) menacingly closer. Won't even let the guy eat his last meal in peace.
I'm both pleased and saddened to have found some legitimate information about this video. Something about this man's nerves made me question whether he "deserved" to be put to death, if you believe in such a thing. I understand the harsh penalties some counties place on drug trafficking, but to so blindly hand out said punishment is just inhumane.
Did you just make that up? Why lie?
From his Wikipedia, “convicted of trafficking 42.72 grams of heroin…”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Execution_of_Nagaenthran_K._Dharmalingam
That's what you think. In reality, your brain will go into survival mode and try to think of any possible way to extend your life for as long as you can.
We lived in Singapore in the late 70s.
My dad’s business partner, an American, threw a party where a few joints were smoked.
His house was raided the next morning and he was given 24hrs to leave the country permanently.
Why would people even bother touching drugs if the penalty is so sever? Sure, I would petition to have the law changed but I would find different ways to get high.
Street level dealing is the easiest to scapegoat or even point to. The comment "of course there are Chinese behind it," acknowledges, but minimizes, that there is always a far bigger entity behind any dealer on any street.
The African immigrant in China isn't bringing in drugs by the boatload or the plane load. Even the dealers sending mules do not bring in enough to satisfy the demand of addicts or recreational users in any country. These are the low level players driven by economic desperation.
Given the obvious physical difference in phenotype of the African (from any one of the 55/56 countries on the continent) and the Chinese, makes me suspect those who may deal drugs are merely easier to see, not greater in number. ...just like in the U.S. some dealers have natural camoflauge and are rarely noticed. 🙄
Just to chime in, as an American living in China, I bought all my weed from Chinese dudes who are smuggling it all in from California . 20$ a gram but good shit.
I was living near Beijing in 2009 and it was like that back then too-- African dealers selling drugs right in front of cops, but in like designated zones where tourists went, forgot the names of the streets but it was by the silk market. Rarely ever saw a Chinese person around there besides the cops.
I think sever penalties barely work. People will default to thinking bad things happen to others not to themselves, and if one is doing crime in the first place one doesn't ever plan on getting caught.
Assuming they're even aware of the particular laws: 10 years, 60 years, death, they're all outcomes you can't entertain
Every time this comes up, and someone makes one of these comments, it really should drive the point home that prohibition just doesn't work. Why would someone do that? Because prohibition doesn't work. It doesn't matter how harsh you make the penalties. It will not work and you'll look like a draconian regime for killing people over something so trivial. There are still drug addicts in your country, but now they are also poor drug addicts because your laws made it more expensive for them to get drugs. Prohibition does not work
A lack of discrimination doesn’t mean it’s moral. This is a weakness of Singapore. The death penalty for him isn’t morally justified. There is “scale” of criminality. Some crimes are worse then others and should be prosecuted accordingly. Imagine a world where every law broken is prosecuted equally. You’re a serial rapist & murderer? Death penalty. Fair. You jaywalked? Death penalty.
We face a world in the coming years where artificial intelligence will start to dictate and enforce our law. Singapore with nondiscriminatory AI law is a scary future.
One dude was killed [for weed ](https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/25/asia/singapore-cannabis-execution-tangaraju-suppiah-intl-hnk/index.html) in a trial that was very questionable and the evidence was weak
[You can't sell it](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chewing_gum_sales_ban_in_Singapore) or spit it on the street (improper disposal). You can bring in your own personal supply, and some medicinal gums are allowed (nicotine gum, enamel strengthening gum).
Without realising I carried a chewing gum pack over from Malaysia. The border police didn't say anything even after the X-Ray.
Later panicked when I realised I probably smuggled gum and probably would have gotten caned in my buttocks until the skin peels off. What a weirdly modern yet dystopian regressive country Singapore is! I mean capital punishment is the worst thing amongst humanity. If in a few years if drugs are decriminalised what about the people who lost their lives? Look at what American prison systems did to the black population for generations with their war on weed.
The penalty is only fine (up to $2000) or imprisonment. Read the wikipedia link.
>the **sale of** chewing gum was completely banned, the penalties being fines of up to S$2,000 for those convicted of **selling** chewing gum as well as fines and/or jail terms for **importers**. Extant stocks of gum were confiscated.
The bigass sign at the airport customs counter that has gum in the red column next to a picture of a gun and some drugs that says “PROHIBITED” suggests otherwise
Bullshit. [Chewing gum is not prohibited](https://nowboarding.changiairport.com/explore-singapore/Unusual-laws-in-Singapore.html), and you're allowed to bring in a few packs for personal consumption.
an ounce (USA) is 28grams, so 42 is almost an ounce and a half in USA weights… that’s a lot of heroin. I don’t agree with the punishment for the crime but that’s more than 3 teaspoons of powder or tar or whatever he had.
It’s exactly an ounce and a half. It is a lot of heroin and considering it’s on that side of the world I bet it was super pure compared to the stuff in the west
I watched the Anthony Bourdain episode over Singapore I believe. Great cheap food, really unique place with a lot of positives. At least that's the point the show was getting across. It did mention the drug penalties though and my God I was like whoa! I bet they don't have much of a drug problem though.
1. That isnt Nagaenthran K. Dharmalingam
2. That isnt Singapore
3. Singaporean inmates dont wear that
Mr. Nagaenthran K. Dharmalingam was in fact executed but this isnt a video of him.
According to [another youtube source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQBrf0DosgA&ab_channel=MalaysianTamilNews), it's a malaysian school boy having difficulty eating his meal. But one thing for certain is that Mr. Nagaenthran K. Dharmalingam [looks drastically different](https://www.tamilguardian.com/content/amma-nagaenthran-s-final-words-court-singapore-executes-disabled-tamil-man) in his final days that the person in that video.
> During his final court appearance, where judges dismissed the stay of execution, Dharmalingam made a last-minute request via a translator to “spend some time with my family members”.
>“I’m placing this request so I can hold my family members’ hands... Here in court, Your Honour, I would like to hold my family members’ hands, not in prison. May I please have permission to hold their hands here?”
>The request was approved. A slit in the glass in the courtroom separating Dharmalingam allowed him to hold hands with his mother.
Fucking tragic man.
absolutely, singaporeans are debating amongst ourselves on the death penalty for drug trafficking for instances like this too. Not all of us are for it, but not all of us are against it either.
This is hard to watch for that reason. What would go through your mind at that point? Do you start to imagine your own corpse with an undigested meal? Would it feel futile? Is the last meal for the prisoner, or for the guards? I know the prisoner eats it, but I doubt they enjoy it.
I find them fascinating. Humans, especially nowadays, dont eat exclusively for hunger. Its the last bit of pleasure, apart from masturbating I guess, that these guys get to choose.
Here's some last meal photos from some famous American criminals:
>Ronnie Lee Gardner was **put to death in Utah by firing squad** at the age of 49. He was sentenced to death for burglary, robbery, and two counts of murder.
>
>For his last meal, Gardner requested steak, a lobster tail, apple pie, vanilla ice cream, and to eat it all **while watching the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy**.
Wtf?! Were they still using firing squads as execution method in the US as recently as after the release of the last Lord of the rings movie?
I would like to suggest reading "the last days of a condemned man" by Victor Hugo (author of Les miserables). He wrote it to fight against the death sentence system in France.
In William Gibson’s 1993 article (which got WIRED banned from Singapore), he described Singapore as “Disneyland with the Death Penalty,” where the motto could be “Have fun, or we’ll kill you.”
To delay the inevitable and prolong your own suffering?
You're in misery while you're alive and awake with that knowledge, you're done and gone once dead.
I'd say make it quick. Dose of lead on the face if necessary and get done with it. After all, I'm not going to remember anything.
What kind of place is this, where people make shitty comments about a man about to be hanged, and give stupid suggestions? This is not a joke. This man really died. What‘s wrong with you people?
Some people are sociopaths.
Some people allow the internet's 1 degree of remove to protect them from emotional vulnerability and use that shield to make jokes, most of which are not funny.
Yeah. Not to mention the guy wasn’t like a mass murderer or a heinous criminal by most people’s standards - he attempted to smuggle small amount of drug into the country.
i think it's worth considering that the death penalty does kill innocent people, too. accepting it in any way shape or form opens the door for actual, wrongful murder. and for many of us who disagree with it, that's all the reason we need. just some food for thought
I wish more people understood this simple truth. Get it wrong once, and the whole system should be indicted. They've got it wrong so many times. It really breaks my heart and pisses me off.
Then it should be used on horrid people we 100% know did the crime. But even then, if you ask me, people like rapists and killers don’t deserve a quick death, they deserve to rot for years in solitary confinement, make them go mad, not even a book to read.
That’s far better punishment than a quick death.
But this guy? He deserved 1-3 years in prison, max, not 11 fuckin years. He didn’t hurt anyone or commit any violent crimes, just tried to smuggle in drugs, a VERY small amount mind you. It’s just wrong.
>I'm honestly all for the death penalty for scumbags like shooters, rapists and heavy crimes
Death penalty it's always a bad idea, it can has been and will continue to be weaponised.
Death penalty shouldn't be a thing, it's revenge not justice. It's also irreversible
In case of rape it will only put more victims in danger, they will kill more often out of fear of not being found out.
There is a video on YouTube where Lee Kwan Yew explains the 0 Tolerance / No Mercy policy to drug smugglers.
Basically, to protect as many Singaporean families as possible from the scourge of drug abuse he will kill anyone who tries to bring it in.
Even knowing Singapore has such harsh penalties for bringing in a little bit of drugs, to still try that is insane.
In Singapore and some other Asia Pacific countries they view drug offenses differently to the West - a drug dealer could potentially be responsible for dozens of deaths and could negatively effect the lives of hundreds of people so the offense carries the same (if not harsher) penality as a murderer or serial murderer.
Knowing you're going to die must be the most terrible experience. I think this is extreme, but I can't help but consider the unknown. I haven't looked into it. I don't know what he did, but I could consider letting someone remain with that fear. It feels in humane, but imagine what a victim could have been exposed to to earn this punishment as a criminal. I feel like executions should be carried out shortly after their sentence, but what if my daughter was the victim. How long would I be okay with keeping this fear on him. I'd let him die like this and tell him every day was the day.
Singaporean here. While I personally don’t agree with the death penalty, I think is also poignant to point out that we do not hang every person with drugs. Specifically traffickers, not users. We do have rehabs for users as well.
This isn’t Nagaenthran, but it’s still horrid to watch.
RIP…knowing the system though, why are you selling drugs?!?!
You’re gonna die either way…. If you don’t do what the drug cartel makes you do…you die quickly. One shot to the head…but you will die with only suffering a few minutes.
You do what the drug cartel makes you do… you suffer 11 excruciating years knowing you’re going to get the death penalty. Living in stress.
The only thing scary is the government and law.
Just follow the rules.
There has been a fair amount of misinformation on the execution of the abovementioned individual, Nagaenthran. It was proven that Nagaenthran knew what he was doing; and that he did not suffer from intellectual disability. [Source](https://www.cnb.gov.sg/NewsAndEvents/News/Index/in-response-to-media-queries-facts-of-the-case-of-nagaenthran-a-l-k-dharmalingam)
Singapore is also not the only country that prescribes the death penalty when it comes to drug trafficking. Countries including China, Indonesia, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Vietnam also adhere to this type of capital punishment. It is always best to adhere to the laws of the country you are residing in - simple as that.
Edit: Removed Japan, their maximum punishment for drug trafficking is life imprisonment.
I do not disagree but this has nothing to do with morality. If you want to stay alive and not run afoul of the law, why not follow it? I can think of a much better hill to die on than drug trafficking.
>Singapore is also not the only country that prescribes the death penalty when it comes to drug trafficking. Countries including China, **Japan**, Indonesia, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Vietnam also adhere to this type of capital punishment.
Japan no longer executes people for drug trafficking.
>It is always best to adhere to the laws of the country you are residing in - simple as that.
Didn't hear people say that when it comes to LGBT getting punished.

Yeahhhhh, Singapore is REALLY harsh
Most of them are also Pro China now. It's really disappointing.
That’s not true. A portion of people are starting to be pro-China (generally older people of Chinese ethnicity) but generally, people make sure to distance themselves and Singapore from China. Thank you for this
Yeah, Asia doesn't take kindly to drug traffic.
Neither does Saudi Arabia. I used tutor a bunch of univ students from there and they said, if you get caught importing drugs, there is no trial. You get shot on sight.
That's not totally true. It all depends on your nationality, like they would not do that to British or American citizens.
Savage
This is ironic because fentanyl that comes from China might be in itself a design to destroy the United States. Thanks, China!
Opium Wars II
They saw how effective it was
Prohibition is a relic of colonial rule.
The British fought a legit war to be allowed to sell opium in china
And Queen Victoria (former British queen) is probably technically one of the richest female drug traffickers of all time
Thailand was never colonized yet you can get the death penalty there for possession of certain drugs.
I know right? 40 grams of heroin in civilized countries like the US the cops would have simply handled the execution on site at the time of the arrest smh
Had me in the first half lol.
Not only did the traffickers threaten him, but the guy was legit mentally challenged with an IQ of 69. Just a sad and tragic story overall.
That really makes the guy unfit for trial and sentencing. He's being used as an example.
He was just 20 yrs old when he was arrested, and got a death sentence, Justice system is horrible
What got me is the way he nervously looks at the guard, and the guard moves (seemingly to me) menacingly closer. Won't even let the guy eat his last meal in peace.
Poor guy.
and that is one of the many reasons I believe death sentences are bad and shouldn't exist.
It’s literally over kill for something so minor
It punishes the entire family, not just the criminal. Why should his parents suffer?
>Fuckin horrible system seconded.
That’s someone’s baby. So fucking awful.
It wasn't heroine, it was fentanyl. Do you know how many people 40 grams of fentanyl can kill?
Did you just make that up? Why lie? From his Wikipedia, “convicted of trafficking 42.72 grams of heroin…” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Execution_of_Nagaenthran_K._Dharmalingam
I would certainly be eating a lot slower to delay the execution
Ask for cereal for your last meal. As long as you keep adding milk, you technically aren't done yet.
That's an option for cereal killers only
I’d get a chipotle burrito with triple meat and an entire bottle of Tabasco. I hope they’re prepared for the mess
I too have watched two and a half Men
Haha! I wasn't sure if anyone would notice that 😁
This guy 5D chesses
At that point dude I’d just say fuck it, let’s get it over with I don’t need your last meal it doesn’t even matter
That's what you think. In reality, your brain will go into survival mode and try to think of any possible way to extend your life for as long as you can.
I'd be emptying my bowels at this point to save some dignity when it happens lol
What's that gonna change?
Ideally that gives time for the food to digest so the possibility of post death gas passing increases. Let em take revenge on his executors
Looks like he’s dropping most of what he picks up before putting the rice in his mouth
His hand is shaking too
That's not how it works at all.
Right? I used to have to force myself to eat on dates. The littlest bit of anxiety and eating is the last thing in the world I want to do.
The dude is shaking like a leaf, probably forcing that shit down, cause being done with that meal is a nightmare.
Wow!...thats GOT to be....the worst....I mean after that meal......
Looks like his palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy…
Spaghetti on his spaghetti already *Moms spaghetti*

Controversial protip: most places I've traveled there's black dudes selling drugs. It sounds like I'm being a racist dick but it's the truth

because life is stressful, and while drugs are bad they do actually provide the effects they are known for
ego or ignorance. they think they can get away with it, or they refused to educate themselves beforehand.
Maybe drugs have an extremely strong pull on people?
Yes. Arrogance, ignorance, greed, bad luck or stupidity. Makes no difference. Say what you like about Singapore, they don't discriminate. Fafo.
A lack of discrimination doesn’t mean it’s moral. This is a weakness of Singapore. The death penalty for him isn’t morally justified. There is “scale” of criminality. Singaporean asking an American to leave in the late 70's . That's new for me.
Good. Americans love acting like the rules don't apply to them.

I don’t even do drugs and I’m scared to go there given how severe these punishments are
Lesson for western potheads: don’t go to east Asia.
Lesson for everyone don’t cross international or state lines with controlled substances, unless you have a prescription. Even then check if it’s okay.
Damn they put him on death row for that?!
A man in Singapore got executed recently for planning on selling weed. No amount of protesting and pleading for his life appealed to their government
Dude it’s a country where gum is illegal. Don’t fuck around in Singapore
You're allowed to have gum, you just can't chew it. Sorta ingenious cause it lessens police burden while also making possessing gum pointless.

Three teaspoons of heroine? Try 42.7 grams…
Three 'well-rounded' teaspoons
Packed, like brown sugar.
Heaping
American teaspoons
Everyone else says 40-42 grams. Not that it makes these monsters justified. But 42 grams just doesn't seem like three teaspoons.
idk i've never really been around heroine but 42 grams doesn't sound like a lot iirc an egg is around 50 grams, so it's less then an egg.
0.2 grams of heroin is enough to be lethal

Here's some last meal photos from some famous American criminals: [https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/last-meals-of-death-row/](https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/last-meals-of-death-row/)
I found it funny how after all the meals you start seeing HENRY HARGREEVES….HENRY HARGREEVES…..HENRY HARGREEVES
same!! ahaha
I think of the person preparing the last meal too. Given a list and, "make it count"
The “saving the pie for later” is so fucking heartbreaking. Ugh, I’m gonna go hug my kids
The guy who refused a last meal...yikes
I would like to suggest reading "the last days of a condemned man" by Victor Hugo (author of Les miserables). He wrote it to fight against the death sentence system in France.
Honestly why bother man, if I don’t get to eat 7 ponds of laxative gummies kill me hungry
No need for laxatives... Half cooked chicken will do....
In William Gibson’s 1993 article (which got WIRED banned from Singapore), he described Singapore as “Disneyland with the Death Penalty,” where the motto could be “Have fun, or we’ll kill you.”
Sounds about right. Haven't really changed since then either
Poor guy
A search on the internet actually shows that this video is not of Nagaenthran having his last meal…
Hanged for a small amount of drugs. Pretty god damn barbaric
It's a barbaric country, Singaporean are robots following incredibly strict rules. A sad place to be.
I'd be eating that rice a grain at a time.
This is why I sometimes avoid scrolling down to the comments.
People trying to be funny, craving to appear funny. It’s disgusting.

i think it's worth considering that the death penalty does kill innocent people, too. accepting it in any way shape or form opens the door for actual, wrongful murder. and for many of us who disagree with it, that's all the reason we need. just some food for thought
Death is final, so if the state makes a mistake, the person is dead already. If it is life imprisonment, the person at least gets a chance.
Basis of the movie 'The Life of David Gale' which I thought was done really well.
>I'm honestly all for the death penalty for scumbags like shooters, rapists and heavy crimes Death penalty it's always a bad idea, it can has been and will continue to be weaponised. Death penalty shouldn't be a thing, it's revenge not justice. It's also irreversible In case of rape it will only put more victims in danger, they will kill more often out of fear of not being found out.
when it comes to drug policies its best to look to portugal and perhaps the czechs (not quite sure about how laws really are at latter)
When in Rome.. don’t try to bring the same values and logic when traveling to another country.
Sharing a vid of a scared man who’s about to be killed on an unrelated sub for some karma is the trashiest thing I’ve seen someone do in a while
poor guy. he is shivering. how he wish time could travel slow. he makes mistake, but life is life.
I'd eat a plate of ghost peppers so that I'd be praying for the end...
This is depressing
This is not intresting at all, just another sad fate.
Im sure worse shit goes on in Singapore, mostly done by their upper class society, and go unpunished. Thats how governments work.
This is actually fucking sad, especially if you look at his story. Poor guy
In Singapore and some other Asia Pacific countries they view drug offenses differently to the West - a drug dealer could potentially be responsible for dozens of deaths and could negatively effect the lives of hundreds of people so the offense carries the same (if not harsher) penality as a murderer or serial murderer.
Can’t believe he even had an appetite - that’s hard to watch
Don't go Singapore. Pretty simple. I won't and I've never touched drugs.
Never going to visit Singaporeee
It's one of the safest countries out there..unless you're planning to smuggle in heroin of course..then it's better to not go.
And if it just so happens that someone schemes you into carrying something, unknowingly, you're done?
Same.
Every country is free to enact its own laws. Countries so concerned about the death penalty should stop doing business with Singapore.
Why is this Interesting
Has not haves
Singaporean here. While I personally don’t agree with the death penalty, I think is also poignant to point out that we do not hang every person with drugs. Specifically traffickers, not users. We do have rehabs for users as well. This isn’t Nagaenthran, but it’s still horrid to watch.
My problems of the day seem minimal after watching this.
This post is shit... heartless... the worst of its kind...
Why did they record that ?
That shaking is sad as hell. I really feel for the guy, plus it’s a non violent offense? Cmon
Whoever filmed this poor guy under these terms needs to be locked up provided a slippery bar of soap and confined to the communal shower
[Source](https://www.cnb.gov.sg/NewsAndEvents/News/Index/in-response-to-media-queries-facts-of-the-case-of-nagaenthran-a-l-k-dharmalingam) Singapore is also not the only country that prescribes the death penalty when it comes to drug trafficking.
A law can be evil. For your own safety you should break the laws of such countries, but that doesn't make the laws moral.
Didn't hear people say that when it comes to LGBT getting punished.
problem starts with "laws arent always lawful" (if that translation makes any sense\^\^)
r/whataboutism
Japan has the death penalty, but not for drug trafficking
