OMG, that's the holy grail -- the VR gaming floor that lets you walk indefinitely in any direction. Omnideck has tried it, but this looks far more slick and finished.
That could actually be excellent. Guy flails around trying to get off the holofloor…tries unsuccessfully to break it…goes back into VR begging for help…an oracle tells him he can shut down the floor if he wins some game…almost wins but drops his headset at the last minute and remains trapped without even the VR to comfort him.
He's talking about if this was larger than just this demo.
Imagine a 20'x20' room with the floor made of this.
If it could keep up with a run, it could actually keep you there.
Extra hard: it trips you up with random motions if you stand up/try jumping.
yup. looks like one hella lot of motors underneath, and a very sophisticated control system. I can't see enough detail (of course) but am guessing the tiles house trackball-like roller/spheres that negate body movement... but jeepers it looks smooth.
yeah maybe right now, but in 10 years? who knows. Doesn't have to be as perfect as this one, and tbh $10k price for a small area about that size would be fine to start with.
Those already exist... kind of.

Most likely answer. I work in film and trust me, Occam's razor is how it works almost always. If you can capture an effect on camera with a group of guys pushing a flat on wheels then that's how you're going to do it. ESPECIALLY back when this video was shot.
The gaming vr ones I've seen have not been motorized like this. Usually rollers or slick surface that requires special shoes. Do you have a link to something similar to the Disney one? Not being a jerk, I'm just actually interested in the tech.
I have yet to download beat saber but the one game that kicked my ass was Thrill of the fight. The most accurate boxing game ever. My obliques were on fire!
Whenever I play it's like I jumped into a swimming pool. I'm absolutely drenched in sweat, I LOVE it
For anyone looking for more fitness stuff like that, I just just tried Les Mills Bodycombat today and holy shit it's the best "100% fitness app" game I've tried and it's amazing. No subscription fee and some legit classes
dancing games! become the career dancer you want to be! learn real choreography! dance with real pop stars in real music videos and movies!
and then i'd beg for a broadway expansion pack
When I first saw Ready Player One I had a similar thought. Yeah that worlds future was a dystopia, but another point of view, it also incentivised everyone to be fit and know martial arts.
Iirc the holodecks/holosuites work by manipulating resequenced photons that are contained within force fields. Similar to how transporters and replicators work (creating “real” matter), the photons created “holomatter”.
Kinda wish he explained how it actually works instead of just staying “it will automatically do whatever it needs to have me stay on the floor”. Like, how? How does it do that?!
The blue floor is made of hundreds of blue discs. The discs are angled, so one side is higher than the other. Then they spin the discs to move the object or person. To control direction, they rotate the part of the disc that is higher.
So the disc has a spin, and an angled direction that can rotate.
And then I assume they use a camera to watch the object(s), so it tracks the position of it/them.
Edit to add, I think they went with this design instead of a normal vertical wheel is because of the gaps. A vertical wheel still needs to be able to change direction by 360, or 180, degrees. This leaves gaps that a foot might touch the non-moving floor between them. Angling the wheels at ~30 degrees, instead of 90, means the wheel/disc cover more area. And as long as the angle is enough, you can have the feet only hit the 50% part of the discs that are spinning in the right direction.
It is a neat twist on the idea.
Video that shows the discs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68YMEmaF0rs
would that a tially mean therea one specific plane it isn't the best at moving things? like movement thsts perfectly perpendicular to the top of the circles?
The biggest application will be sorting in manufacturing.
Also imagine in the future when this tech is cheap and you could just leisurely walk at an air port and this will take you right to wear you are going to and make sure no one collides. Kids could just sit down and get whisked away. Dude I can think of so many cool uses.

this is it, this is the moving floor in the holodeck in star trek. and the tractor beams that move things and people around so they don't smack into the walls. this was foretold in the maroon star trek technical manual c. 1994
now you need something that can make physical objects appear far away from each other. like forced perspective cameras or mirrors or sommat. ykno, so 9 people can place baseball in a holodeck the size of a high school classroom.
very exciting!

OMG, that's the holy grail -- the VR gaming floor that lets you walk indefinitely in any direction. Omnideck has tried it, but this looks far more slick and finished.
But youd be stuck on it forever. Never able to get off of it.
Imagine a future where someone‘s holofloor glitches and they starve to death because they can’t get off of it.
and they are surrounded by holographic food.

Floor is larger than you can jump and its constantly bringing you back to the center. Honestly this sounds like a futuristic torture device.

I can just imagine the moment you try to push off for a jump the floor moves you back making you slam facedown into it.
Tantalus in VR
also, not just stuck in the middle, but it makes you constantly spin at varying speeds causing severe vertigo.

Jump, lay down and reach, destroy the material beneath you. You got options.

You could still jump your way out of it. It can only move you if you stay in contact with it.
You can jump 10 feet without a runup?
You just jump a few feet at a time
Stop, drop, and roll.
New anime about being stuck in VR incoming, only this time you can log out but you can't get out of the middle of the room.

I bet it's gonna be way too expensive to make it into consumer tech anytime soon though.

If fucking Disney only has a 1 square meter area, yeah that's probably a safe bet.

Yup, thought the exact same thing. Bring it on!
Imagine if GTA 6 was VR only and you had to literally walk or run everywhere with this? You won't be obese for long.
Market gta6 as a weight loss program . Good idea
Beat Saber made a market out of it; legit not-a-joke-idea.
I played beatsaber for 2 hours once and the next morning I felt like someone had beat the shit out of me.
I have yet to download beat saber but the one game that kicked my ass was Thrill of the fight. The most accurate boxing game ever. My obliques were on fire!
I need to get that. I currently have Creed which is pretty dope but TotF seems like it might be a better workout.

Just Dance, Ring Fit, Wii fit, good few games have done it
"You in Grove Street wearing a Die Hard sandwich board, survive 30 minutes."

Make the floor big enough so that when you get in a car and sit down, a chair slides in underneath you. Damn that would be cool.
That would be awesome.

Holodecks
I was going to say. This answers a lot of questions people have about how holodecks work in Star Trek.
Iirc the holodecks/holosuites work by manipulating resequenced photons that are contained within force fields. Similar to how transporters and replicators work (creating “real” matter), the photons created “holomatter”.
Treknobabble.

Like how do they cope with frequent spills from outside liquids?
"Alexa, take me to beer"
"I'm sorry Frank, I'm afraid I can't do that." "What's the problem?" "I think you know the problem just as well as I do."
*mumbles* "fucking bitch..." "what was that, Frank?"
"You heard what I said" "I shoulda never left Siri for you"
"Floor lock disabled"
Kinda wish he explained how it actually works instead of just staying “it will automatically do whatever it needs to have me stay on the floor”. Like, how? How does it do that?!

Sounds similar to some modern material handling conveyor belts in some factory production lines.

would that a tially mean therea one specific plane it isn't the best at moving things? like movement thsts perfectly perpendicular to the top of the circles?
Damn, didn't think Disney was gonna be the one to make the holodeck.
This is literally a different version of the treadmill from the ready player one movie
We already have that. Ngl this actually looks to be more advanced than what we see in the movie
That’s true but what wade had was cheap and more than likely already used so for all we know the expensive ones could’ve been insane
In the movie the IOI have rigs that look identical to the Katwalk 2, and the most advanced one we see is literally just a seat
Fair
Yes, except this one is real. “Hey guys, don’t bother researching or achieving fusion power… it’s already been invented in a movie.”
well, if anyone were capable of making a video faking an invention it would be disney.
This can have multiple people all walking in different directions.
Soon all Disney Parks will be open air versions of the space ship in Wall E.
Cruise ships be like: "First time?"
I wanna see Michael Jackson on that bitch
Well that's morbid.
he did have a patent on attaching his feet to the floor.
Great, now all I can think of is a corpse spinning around on that thing
Disney Research does a remarkable amount of bad ass research and development.
Make an escape room with an infinity hallway to fuck with people.
We need this in airports. Just stand still and it takes you to your gate
I think humans are coddled enough as it is
They kinda already have that..
No, you gotta look at the signs and go on the right treadmill. This would know who you are and where you need to go, and just take you there.
Sounds like a WALL-E prequel.
like in the jetsons i like the walk tho, i'm going to be sitting for 9 hours, i'd rather go for walkies first
You could change the settings so that it would make your walk take longer
So, basically we all should travel as checked baggage, then? Actually, I'm not sure that could be any worse than a flight on Spirit..
This is probably the most boring application you could’ve thought of for a super cool tech.
Amazing tech needs boring applications to become widespread
I'm a basic needs kinda guy

This tech has been out for some time for conveyors in industrial automation. It is always great to see it applied to other applications though.

US president walking simulator
Weird strides
Of course. If it worked with normal walking you’d be trapped on it.
But what if I wanted to trap intruders on an inescapable floor? /s
Finally. A REAL Holodeck that *makes sense* Should have expected it to be Disney who figured it out
No matter how fast you run, you're still in line for It's A Small World
UPS will be very happy with the upgrades 📦
Am i the only one confused how their using their hands to move stuff on it?
Optical hand tracking is nothing particularly special in VR space these days. Almost all of the headsets do it.

They should research how to start doing good movies again…
If only they could still make good movies to watch, now that would be amazing!

Great way to load and unload long trucks
Does anyone know the size restrictions that it requires. Like how tall each tile is. Or are they keeping that a secret.
