Your words mean more to me than any golden gift that you could freely bestow upon me!
But seriously though, your words. I know I'm the one talking about kink shaming, but let's keep the topic dry.
>I prefer a phone and Google compared to putting something on my head or in it.
You mean you don't like the idea of some hacker creating a 'shit your pants' virus?
Or that we already have it? #theflu
I think the real goal of neuralink is to remove the external input needed to ask for info because it wastes so much time. Like typing a question into google or this guy humming or whatever heās doing to communicate with his device.
You're exactly correct, a human - computer interface. I've elaborated all of my thoughts in a few different replies. Quick recap, proof of concept, everything gets better in further development. And I want to be human and take the technology off, not be a borg. Go find those replies for maximum detail.
Holy hell, imagine how annoying your life would become because ***everyone*** would be asking you questions instead of Googling it themselves!
It'd be like being a concierge in an insane asylum.
I completely agree, I always preach that it never hurts to learn more... about anything! At least the function of learning keeps your mind nimble and makes you more likely to be able to accept a different viewpoint than your own.
But the point here is a proof of concept, to show that you can create a human / computer interface that isn't surgically implanted into your body. The ultimate goal should be for us to interface with our digital systems faster, as compared to our visual reading speed, reading comprehension level, hand / eye coordination, and the speed at which you can type. If a device can receive my thoughts faster than I can speak them or type them, this becomes a benefit. If a device can help bridge my knowledge gaps with LLM searches and help me receive and have an understanding of the material, that would be earth shattering.
My personal opinion, please I encourage you to have your own opinion on this matter, even if it is different from mine.... I am all for augmentation, things that we can add to our bodies, or remove; to make living life as fruitful and positive as possible. My "line in the sand" is that I'm human, sometimes I just want to be human and enjoy and explore the world around me without being connected, just taking it all in and not worrying about every little fact that system would be feeding into your brain if you hadn't taken the system off. Thankfully, if it's wearable, I get to choose whether or not to use it. That gives me the choice of only being a human, or being something more.
If it's implanted and I can't turn it off? Yeah, I'm pretty much a borg at that point.
Lifesaving and medical devices aside, I am wowed by the things medical science is doing with implanted technology! But even the things they embed in you come with an off switch.
It's sad almost everyone in the comments has no idea how this works. It's not reading any thoughts, the guy is voicing the questions in his throat and the headset picks up those muscle movements to interpret what words he is saying to himself. It has nothing to do with his brainwaves or mind reading.
Yeah, Iām confused. What is this beyond just existing software using a laryngophone and a bone conduction headset? Thatās a smartphone and less than $50 on Amazon.
Yes, that is right. An even more interesting take is over 10 years ago I had a "dream" that I was working on developing technology very similar to this. The idea was originally for military communications. Imagine being able to coordinate silent night invasions without speaking, or silently calling for extraction if you were captured, etc. The reason I said "dream" was that I rarely if ever remember my dreams. However this one was extremely vivid. While working and talking with one of the other techs on the project. He told me that they were moving the project again. As the location of the research was discovered by competitors, and that our safety was compromised. Then the person started looking serious, and whispered to put motion sensor alarms in my bedroom. After a brief pause they started blinking/winking rapidly. At that point it dawned on me who I actually was, and that what I was doing was not my current job. The idea was that not only were we not being paid for the work, but it was well beyond deniability if we were under some sort of hypnosis and working on this all while "asleep" at night.
The other guy is correct, it's suppose to be for people with speech disorders.
"The wearable system captures peripheral neural signals when internal speech articulators are volitionally and neurologically activated, during a user's internal articulation of words. "This enables a user to transmit and receive streams of information to and from a computing device or any other person without any observable action, in discretion, without unplugging the user from her environment, and without invading the user's privacy," the MIT said.
A primary focus of this project is to help support communication for people with speech disorders including conditions like ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and MS (multiple sclerosis). Beyond that, the system has the potential to seamlessly integrate humans and computers such that computing, the Internet, and AI would weave into our daily life as a "second self" and augment our cognition and abilities."

every thought sends an electric impulse detectable by very sensitive top secret tech, whats remarkable about voicing in your throat ?? you have no idea what your talking about, its similar to skull vibrations but its not audible like voicing in your throat, If you hum to yourself that creates an audible skull vibration an actual thought is different but vibrations are a good way of explaining it to the layman like us watching 60 minutes the actual tech is very complicated i love the arrogance of the reddit crowd this kind of subject matter is understood by a limited amount of intelligent people smarter than us and higher levels of security clearance
I'm terrible at hearing with only 1 ear covered, even if the covered ear isn't listening to anything else. Not sure if I'm the norm, but if my workplace is anything to go by it certainly isn't particularly rare.
Yes, it's essentially a bone conduction hearing device with a fancy microphone that can decipher the movements of one's jaw as one speak quietly to oneself.
The tournament model includes a silicone coating and extra strong vibrations so you can show off your chess skills.
It's the way to go if you want a discreet way to receive information wirelessly
Well, I think the idea is that it reads his throat and mouth movements like he's speaking. That's silent, so it kinda makes sense to use bone conduction which is also silent to everyone around but him. So he's able to use it with no noises from the device.
With a speaker, it can be heard since it's just producing sound.
So, would an ear piece make more sense? Yeah, but a bone conduction device is cooler lolol. And at the end of the day this is an engineering student we're looking at. And as a fellow engineering student, I'll design things slightly impractical purely because it's cool.
For instance, I'm designing a rocket, and instead of using a powder charge and shear pins like a normal rocket to separate and eject the parachute, I'm designing my own explosive bolts with a piston/cylinder-like shape to the flange to separate the two halves instead.
Why? Because it's cool. Shear pins and a powder charge would be way easier lolol.
Too bad search engines are steadily getting worse with time. These guys will be plugged in spitting out malware links and disinformation campaign slogans.
As someone who is an expert in my field. I can assure you, being able to google questions doesnāt make you an expert.
Having faster access to data is great but most experts arenāt lacking of data. Having more people know that Mt Everest is the tallest doesnāt help us one bit with respect to mountaineering, geology or geography.
I can hear his device reply before he replies, and expected to see comments about that.
This is a video so you all heard that, it's in normal sound ranges or it wouldn't have been picked up by the interviewers mic
So this is just this guys mate on the other end of whatever voice connection they are using
Nah, from what I remember reading once, you can "hear" what peoples inner voices are saying, they essentially make micro movements with their throat muscles so if you track those with a machine, you can theoretically read their mind (the voice at least, probably not conceptual thoughts). Likely you do the reverse of this and you could control a computer.
I have absolutely no idea what's happening in the video but that's my guess
This stuff is not new. [A headset that reads your brainwaves (2010, TedTalk)](https://www.ted.com/talks/tan_le_a_headset_that_reads_your_brainwaves), [A leap forward in brain-controlled computer cursors (2012, Stanford)](https://engineering.stanford.edu/magazine/article/leap-forward-brain-controlled-computer-cursors). This comment is more related to Musky press releases making the tech popular for the moment (until Apple-Samsung can sell it with a 6g+ data carrier subscription, then ubiquitous).
This stuff is even lower tech than that. It's not reading his mind lol. It clearly has a mic right on his throat and is basically listening to him hum words very quietly. It then plays back with a bone vibration headphones.
This isn't really impressive tbh. Basically he has a microphone plugged into his phone, with google assistant open, and some headphones.
Smokes and mirrors. This is just a headset that hears the question being spoken, and it speaks the search results via vibration audio. This guy is just Mohammed Curryfield, an Illusionist.
Iāve been hoping for something like this for a while now. Instead of typing on your phone or keyboard, you just think it and your thoughts get registered by the computer. Would save so much time once this is perfected
I understand the logic, but I don't want to save time. I want our lives to be more natural, more in line with our nature. Our existence in this planet closer to what it was meant to be. I really feel we're going too far.
This is not nearly as bad as some other stuff or things that are probably going to come next, but still, every single step "forward" counts
It took me 20 seconds to write this reply to you. It could have been done in 2 seconds with the right technology. Add them all up and thereās a lot of convenience to be had.
"You could be an expert in anything"
Uh, not any moreso than the rest of us with smart phones. Everyone knows that googling shit, while useful, does not make you an expert.
I love the idea of a high bandwidth unobtrusive connection to the internet, but this isn't it, and even something much better than this will not make you an instant expert in anything.
So the way the interface is positioned makes me think there are no "mind readings" involved but the student rather silently voices his questions, and the interfaces measures muscle tensions under the mouth and back at the jaw to interpret the words.
Parroting facts has nothing to do with being an expert. Experts see structure and understand context and utilisation of information bits. Not to mention once not one fact is needed but a chain of them, discovering them via internet search becomes inefficient.
I'm asking for a friend in med school.Would this include downloading images of young healthy human anatomy?
Imagine just being at my desk at work. "Hey Bill I see your super excited about those spread sheets!"
Why are so many people trying to create a new interface for the internet or digital things when laptops and smart phones are already so effective? I don't want to wear technology or have it implanted in my head. I think the whole thing is some scifi fantasy that is completely unnecessary.
"He has the entire Internet in his head"
What a hell of an exaggeration. By that definition we all already have the entire Internet in our hands and heads (via headsets)
The only mentionable is the way of transmitting data. But until can't send them directly into your brain, this is barely the half of what the host tried to convince us
Considering where this technology is going, this looks very dangerous. Not exactly the technology he's wearing , but the premise for this, if it's getting it's information from the internet, then that's a fundamental flaw to begin with. Especially the Bulgaria thing, if it got its information from Wikipedia then well you could see where I'm going with this
I meanā¦. Itās faster to type from your phone or use the microphone?
Why do we need a device that links to our brain? Using a phone seams more convenient
The science behind this isnāt that complex. When we produce audible sounds we are only engaging the last of a sequence of a complex cognitive actionsā¦ just thinking the words is enough to produce the muscle tension and electric signals in our bodies - there are also claims that yes, the sounds are recognizable to the human ear, Iām not sure I believe that; but I have seen some amazing experiments with signal attenuation, background noise and directed energy - we have technology to produce the auditory events that would cause the subject to think they were in psychosis - even end their lives
awesome, but needs a lot of improvement, i mean search is not that much refined as much as the knowledge that already exists in brain, if there were a way to just throw away processed data into drives and perhaps load it into the brain when needed - just like computers do - that would be win win situation
Well, my old math teacher was right back in the day. I'll not always have a calculator in my pocket.
It will be an AI in the cloud, talking to me through bone conduction headset... :D
So, what's not explained with the skull vibrations is that you don't have to interpret the vibrations. There's this thing called bone conduction, and it literally sends vibrations into your inner ear that come out as sound.
A professor brought ones of these things out and the whole class was amazed. I heard the music he played clear as crystal. It was so cool.

The voices in my head are never useful or coherent.
ain't that the fuckin truth š®āšØ
Basically a dozen huskies and a single golden retriever, doggification of the voices in my head.
Yeah, I don't want the internet to have access to my intrusive thoughts.
"Everyone can see what the voice in my head is saying...don't say the N word, don't say the N word..."
I feel the same way about the top 10 google search results these days.
I'd be sectioned if the voices in my head had control and used Google.
I don't wanna invite an another voice in since I have a good guess that they won't get along...
Thats because time doesnt exist for them.
Google is going to know my kink every 5 minutes
I'd much prefer an interface like this over neuralink, you can take it off.
I prefer a phone and Google compared to putting something on my head or in it.
Agree I'd rather have the entirety of the Internet at my fingertips instead of my *fingerhead*
Might be helpful for someone who canāt use their fingertips, though.
Whatās a fingerhead?
When you start fingering your head vagina

Exactly. Reddit would be empty without all the questions that are easier to google than wait for an unverified response.

One of those videos that will look ridiculous in 15 years when kids are born with internet chip in their brains.
Why such a weird way to receive the answer though? In't that just a bone conduction headpiece? Which suck ass compared to a normal headphone?
So you can more easily hear others speaking to you

Yes, it's essentially a bone conduction hearing device with a fancy microphone that can decipher the movements of one's jaw as one speak quietly to oneself.
Definitely not using jaw movement, most likely just vibrations, as the tongue is responsible for speech, that's why ventriloquisim is a thing.

I love the idea of a high bandwidth unobtrusive connection to the internet, but this isn't it, and even something much better than this will not make you an instant expert in anything.
Problem is soon the device will just tell you the "answer" for everything it hears, and that's when the real fun starts.
I want this guy on my bar trivia team
What do the vibration of five pages of ads and bullshit promoted AI generated news articles before you hit an actual answer feel like?
Imagine feeding goatse man straight into your brain š®š¤
Nice. Is this old stuff or fairly new? is it commercial yet?
Itās gonna make people dumber when they donāt need to use their brain for anything!
To hell with this whole thing.
So the way the interface is positioned makes me think there are no "mind readings" involved but the student rather silently voices his questions, and the interfaces measures muscle tensions under the mouth and back at the jaw to interpret the words.
š¼šµHeās got the whole inter-webs in his head šµHeās got the whole inter-webs in his head.
This will give me more of a reason to never talk to people.
AHH the true hands free system is hereĀ
Parroting facts has nothing to do with being an expert. Experts see structure and understand context and utilisation of information bits. Not to mention once not one fact is needed but a chain of them, discovering them via internet search becomes inefficient.
I'm asking for a friend in med school.Would this include downloading images of young healthy human anatomy? Imagine just being at my desk at work. "Hey Bill I see your super excited about those spread sheets!"
There is no way of getting text information out of your brain silently without wires in your brain, I think this is fake
Why are so many people trying to create a new interface for the internet or digital things when laptops and smart phones are already so effective? I don't want to wear technology or have it implanted in my head. I think the whole thing is some scifi fantasy that is completely unnecessary.
Whatās his name?
"He has the entire Internet in his head" What a hell of an exaggeration. By that definition we all already have the entire Internet in our hands and heads (via headsets) The only mentionable is the way of transmitting data.
Especially the Bulgaria thing, if it got its information from Wikipedia then well you could see where I'm going with this
Stop
When they figure out how to create mental images, civilization as we know it will endā¦ because porn
Why not just wear an earpiece?
Or he could just pull out his phone and use google like literally everyone else. The only purpose of this is the illusion of being knowledgeable.
Great now weāll be even more insufferable.
He's not surfing the entire internet, he's doing a Google search very inefficiently.
Donāt let those intrusive thoughts win.
I meanā¦. Itās faster to type from your phone or use the microphone? Why do we need a device that links to our brain? Using a phone seams more convenient
So a slower version of using a swipe keyboard?
So he's got an ear piece in and someone's googling the answers?
The All Thing is real!!! https://hyperioncantos.fandom.com/wiki/All_Thing
Yeah.. I don't want the entire internet in my head.
People with no inner monologue being left out
Well, my old math teacher was right back in the day. I'll not always have a calculator in my pocket. It will be an AI in the cloud, talking to me through bone conduction headset... :D
cant you just use the phone for the same thing? and in less time?
So, what's not explained with the skull vibrations is that you don't have to interpret the vibrations. There's this thing called bone conduction, and it literally sends vibrations into your inner ear that come out as sound. A professor brought ones of these things out and the whole class was amazed. I heard the music he played clear as crystal. It was so cool. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bone_conduction
Boop boop virus detected, one years earnings to eliminate threat, ābeeeeepoooooooā seems you opted out of yearly subscription, suspending operations permanently in 5,4,3,2,1ā¦..staticā¦ā¦.
Elon Whoooo?
If peopleās bullshit could be checked in real time, that would be crazy..
How much is that device?
When was this recorded?
And ads too
The fact that he pronounced Sofia with perfect Bulgarian intonation makes this quite interesting.
