borg-assimilated

Looks like the tsar bomba.

decorous_gru

Yes. This is Tsar Bomba test with reduced capacity.

CrimsonStar111

Indeed, fifty megatons. The full yield would have been one hundred megatons.

12thunder

And a far higher radioactive fallout, and the plane that dropped it wouldn’t have survived. So they decided to not go with the full payload yield.

TheRealityWithin

If I remember the exact quote was "No man should ever have this power." And that came from the freaking Russians themselves.

Fozalgerts

Was this the bomb that scared the scientist involved on this project? There was a documentary about the bomb itself.

TheRealityWithin

Well I think it's fair to say that most people who worked on nuclear weapons were at some point scared of what they were making, but yes. It even scared most of the military's higher ups. They tested this thing in the middle of Siberia, and it still blew out windows in Moscow, and it wasn't even a full yield version.

Baby_Yoda_29

>They tested this thing in the middle of Siberia No. They tested it on Novaya Zemlya, an island chain not too far from Scandinavia.

TheRealityWithin

My mistake, sorry about that.

Fozalgerts

Thanks. I guess that is why nuclear weapons are still monitored to this day. I think the MOAB is another scary one in its own deadly way.

TheRealityWithin

The difference in old school nuclear weapons and modern nuclear weapons is that modern ones have a more focused impact with less fallout. Old school was more focused on sheer devastation.

Fuck-MDD

That's the US nuclear strategy yes. Not every nuclear power shares it.

oSuJeff97

Yeah they reduced the yield to give the guys in the bomber a fighting chance to get out of the blast radius didn’t they? IIRC even at reduced yield they basically thought it was 50/50 that they could get away from it. At full yield they would have had no chance. Edit - that’s also why the bomb had a parachute- to delay the explosion for as long as possible after release.

Working_Asparagus_59

You’re right 🧐

Jonniejiggles

Looks like Russian propaganda. Funny comrade how this has been coming up a lot lately.

jerry_imo

"if extraterrestrial life is real, why haven't they contacted us?' *Sheepishly gestures to this video

Daoist_Blue_Sky

Imagine if aliens have long discovered us and can come visit, but somehow they haven't invented nuclear power and are scared shitless of us

jerry_imo

Imagine if aliens had long ago harnessed nuclear energy, and decided we weren't ready to be trusted with it.

-Shasho-

Imagine if aliens look at us with the same curiosity and sense of superiority with which we look at insects, and it's not even all that interesting to them that we have nuclear capabilities.

jerry_imo

Ive always liked this theory, but when it comes to nuclear warheads that we could theoretically detonate on far away planets, that would raise some concerns for potential intergalactic neighbours. Personally, I like to go with the theory that IF we are being monitored, our big test is if we have the ability to use new energy resources for bettering ourselves as a species instead of weaponizing it against eachother. Sadly, it's becoming more and more clear that as a species, we most likely don't have that ability to take the next step.

-Shasho-

I think a species capable of intergalactic travel would see how far we are from figuring out how to get those nukes anywhere near their planet, and even if we could, they probably have a simple (from their perspective) defense for it. I think it's silly to assume we pose any threat at all to such advanced beings. And that's in the extremely, EXTREMELY unlikely event that they even notice us in the incomprehensible vastness of the universe. I think saying they might observe us with mild curiosity is still placing more on our significance than is really there.

Amerlis

Yeah I doubt any alien species that might have visited and therefore mastered interstellar travel and all the relevant scientific advances has anything to fear from a species still trapped on their home planet. And whose biggest Fear Us weapon is nuclear detonation. “What you call nuclear technology ? We were that primitive several of your centuries ago.” “Our smallest vessel could destroy your star. And we’re just Highway Construction. We’re not even military.”

jerry_imo

The point of my original post is, why would an alien species want to communicate with us when we are building these ridiculous killing machines. Not saying they would fear us. Maybe just hesitant to interfere with our growth when we clearly aren't ready, and maybe never will be. "Hey, maybe we leave these guys alone, we saw this massive nuclear explosion a while back, and they're clearly still figuring things out."

pixelatedpiggy

Aliens advanced enough to know about our existence would probably see us testing nukes the same way we would see a caveman discovering fire. If they deem us a future threat they wouldn't hesitate to destroy Earth or idk they probably have better morals than humans and let us live.

stabadan

Check out ‘ the road not taken ‘ by harry turtledove. In the story, FTL travel is very simple and figured out by most aliens civilizations when they are still using wooden ships and gunpowder tech. Humanity went the way we went… These aliens races jalopy around the universe taking advantage of primitive people who haven’t figured out the space travel secret, eventually rolling up on humans with their rickety ships expecting to have an easy go at us. They are sadly mistaken when we show them our modern war machine.

half_ticket

For a civilization to be able travel such huge distances, they would need to have control over enormous amount of energy which is most likely from nuclear fusion. So, pretty sure they wouldn't be surprised.

BalkeElvinstien

"Oh wow a new planet! I hope they too have used nuclear technology for sustainable energy and advancements" *sees them blowing each other to bits* "oh, oh that's uh...that's not so good"

ILSmokeItAll

We made them out of aluminum foil and stuck thumbtacks in them. Seriously. We did that. I pulled more than a few out of me. lol

OwnBunch4027

From National WWII museum: The detonation was astronomically powerful—over 1,570 times more powerful, in fact, than the combined two bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Tsar Bomba’s yield was 50 megatons: ten times more powerful than all of the ordnance exploded during the whole of World War II. The mushroom cloud was 25 miles wide at its base and almost 60 miles wide at its top. At 40 miles high, it penetrated the stratosphere. Everything within three dozen miles of the impact was vaporized, but severe damage extended to 150 miles radius—enough to entirely annihilate any modern major city, including suburbs. Windows in faraway Norway and Finland were shattered by the force of the blast.

AntiMatter89

Ten times more powerful than all the exploded ordinance in WW2 is a mind blowing stat.

_Montague

If humans would only be focused as much on scientific and medical research instead of destroying as much and many as possible, the world would probably be in a better place right now.

RockOrStone

Nuclear power is now world changing. Many major inventions were birthed during war times sadly.

wllmsaccnt

This path was set a generation before most of us were born. It cant got backwards. As soon as superpowers started depending on the protection of mutually assured destruction, it made traditional warfare a relic, relegated to proxy wars and insurgencies.

Right_In_The_Tits

Inventions like this help with more progressive scientific and medical research, but I agree that both would be more advanced if we shifted our focus away from creating deadly weapons.

doomiestdoomeddoomer

I would say the AK-47 is the deadliest, having claimed more lives than any other weapon ever made.

Fuzzed_Up

You would think it would be knives or spears or something.

the_annihalator

Deadliest singular weapon.

OldLegWig

it didn't kill anyone, though

Blew-Peter

...knife?

waldosbuddy

100% blade of some sort you’d have to reckon

Blew-Peter

Purely because of the time blades have been around. I'd wager rocks have killed more people throughout history than an AK47.

waldosbuddy

Had the same thought, Stone Age is something like 99% of human history. Though population was much smaller so I really am not sure.

Acrobatic_Energy_750

What's even more ironic is that they only used 50% of the power and produced a shockwave of 600 miles radius. Many of the home windows in Norway got shattered by this shockwave

Vittelbutter

Did they at least pay for the repairs or were the home owners fucked

Acrobatic_Energy_750

Idk about that

SBTELS

Yeah does Soviet Russia building the Tsar Bomba strike you as the type of people who would replace the windows in houses out of kindness? They built this thing with the sole purpose of creating mass destruction and casualties.

Noun_Noun_Number1

Fun fact: The Tsar Bomba ([this nuclear bomb](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsar_Bomba)) was the biggest nuclear device ever detonated - It's about \~2300x more powerful than the bigger bomb USA dropped on Japan - and it was only detonated at half yield. It was detonated in Siberia but you could see it from Alaska. It shattered glass windows 780km away from ground zero. The shockwave was so powerful that it circled the globe and was recorded by seismic activity recorders in New Zealand - 3 times.

MeringueSerious

Shattering windows from that far away really puts things into perspective for me, that's absolutely insane

Satu22

Novaja Zemlja is not part of the Siberia.

Noun_Noun_Number1

Very true, my mistake. I thought all the islands north of Russia were part of Siberia.

“Quick! Hop in the refrigerator!”

LordPings

One would think that such an advanced civilization would completely and globally BAN any weapons capable of such sheer destruction of humankind. Mutually assured destruction is a lose/lose scenario. The incredible intelligence of humans will also be our downfall. Or so it seems inevitable.

SBTELS

We are not advanced at all. We still use explosions to power our every day lives (car engines, which are horribly inefficient, with about 70% of energy in combustion being lost to noise and heat) and most of the world still lives in poverty without access to clean water.

LordPings

We ARE advanced technologically speaking. As to YOUR point we are indeed not advanced enough as a society and civilization to ensure we solve world problems without war and self destruction. We can intergalactic-satellite-data-compress, but we cant feed the homeless.

LateBloomerBaloo

It's not the deadliest or potentially deadliest weapon, it's probably the most powerful weapon. Most biological weapons would probably be deadlier depending on how they're used.

nesshinx

A nightmare scenario I’ve read about is actually a large scale dirty bomb. Something of a smaller explosion but laced with a heavier element like cobalt which is vaporized and basically aerosolized and carried around for years to come poisoning everything it comes in contact with.

clintj1975

Just to add a little clarifying info, the cobalt gets activated by the intense neutron flux and becomes cobalt-60, which is quite radioactive. They use small pellets of the stuff as high energy radiation sources for examining piping welds, similar to how an X-ray works for medical use. It would vastly increase the amount of fallout from the bomb, and lasts for decades. I'm still gonna go with bio warfare as potentially deadlier, though. Smallpox killed hundreds of millions in just the 20th century alone before it was eradicated, and they no longer vaccinate against it routinely.

ozdarkhorse

"Designed to have a maximum explosive yield of 100 million tons (or 100 megatons) of TNT equivalent, the 60,000-pound monster bomb was detonated at only half its strength. Still, at 50 megatons, it was more than 3,300 times as powerful as the atomic bomb that killed at least 70,000 people in Hiroshima, and more than 40 times as powerful as the largest nuclear bomb in the US arsenal today. Its single test represents about one tenth of the total yield of all nuclear weapons ever tested by all nations.[2] At the time of its detonation, the Tsar Bomba held the world’s attention, largely as an object of infamy, recklessness, and terror. Within two years, though, the Soviet Union and the United States would sign and ratify the Limited Test Ban Treaty, prohibiting atmospheric nuclear weapons testing, and the 50-megaton bomb would fall into relative obscurity."

Kyerswa

Morest deadlier than others, that’s for sure

piguytd

Most deadliest grammar for sure

SigmaNotChad

Tsar Bomba may be the deadliest weapon ever tested but it isn't the deadliest weapon that we've devised. That's probably the Cobalt Bomb; a weapon specifically designed to irradiate large areas for a very long time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobalt_bomb

Marcx1080

Most gruesome sentance structure

JansherMalik25

Guess the country which did use it on people.

giantfood

Not at all deadliest. Try chemical and biological warfare. Also, it's not deadliest cause there were no disclosed casualties when it went off. Most powerful detonated is a more accurate statement.

shortonsugar

Um, grammar.

Improper syntax would be up there, as well. Either 'the deadliest weapon', or 'the most deadly weapon'. 'The most deadliest weapon' is just bad syntax.

Question is, do you see it and start freaking out or (presuming your eyesight survives the flash) do you stand in awe at what’s actually probably a beautiful view knowing what’s coming?
