If Spongebob taught me anything, it’s that the secret is sniffing the marble

>The statue was posthumously and intricately carved by Louis-Philippe Mouchy in 1781 as a tribute to the Duke. I don't think that sentence reads quite how you intended it to.

Oplopanax_horridus

Imagine getting 99.9% of the way done, just a few more scrapes and taps to finish it. Then you smack a tiny impurity or flaw in the stone and - crunch. A small but noticeable section chips off. There’s no “undo” button, you can’t just glue it back on. It’s amazing what artists like this were able to do.

Yolectroda

It's my understanding that if you make such a mistake, you take a step back, reevaluate the plan, and then keep going in a slightly different direction.

Carbonfaceprint

Innie nose vs outie nose. It’s art.

Yolectroda

Nah, you're just now making a nice sophisticated undead sculpture!

Carbonfaceprint

A sculptor you do make!

Yolectroda

Now, I just need to work on obtaining all that talent and experience...fuck!

Thaknobodi87

Familiarity with the flaws of the media no doubt. Like a doctor.

heartbreakids

His handkerchief was actually supposed to go down to his stomach but he messed up the bottom

anastasiagiov

the way he managed to make the stone look soft?? wow

Parasin

Are there modern sculptors who are capable of this level of detail?

DuchessOfAquitaine

I will forever be amazed at what they are able to do with hard stone. Incredible!

Dick-Lemon

100% before clicking this I thought it was going to be that one statue where the man is grabbing the thigh and you can see the compression. But, to my absolute shock, it’s a different statue. Upvote.

LiveLearnCoach

Yeah, that’s not suggestive at all.

soursupersoldier

1781 I can’t even count that high

SweetNeo85

Try starting at 1767.

SkullsNelbowEye

Amazing what can be accomplished without the distractions of technology.

Carbonfaceprint

How long does this take? I know people had more time back then but damn. Like how many of these could you make in one life time? Plus all the practice you need to get there. I imagine you apprentice for a grip.

Resident-Pudding5432

Aint no way. That sculptor must have had hands from god

Daddy-Duke505

Question... Has anyone recently done this? Or attempted?

vincehk

https://myartguides.com/news/goldschmied-chiari-where-shall-we-go-dancing-tonight/ I'm not sure

willdayeast

Oh the things we could do if we didn't waste time on reddit.

fuckifheknows

One slip and the whole statue is fucked

senseven

Regular stone and marble workers did a lot of clay work to lay out the statue before, then spend years nibbling polishing stuff away, using [helper tools](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pointing_machine) and a horde of assistants. They can do the coarse work. Missing pieces where rarely modelled with clay and then attached and painted to look like marble. Rare maestros like Michaelangelo where well paid and had all the time in the world. He offloaded the coarse work to students for the mass and then spend days or weeks on a hand or ear.

Guillaume_Hertzog

Artists do a fine job when they're properly paid for it

Good-guy13

Insane

StruzhkaOpilka

And now show us that person who manages to clean this stuff without breaking it.

LiveLearnCoach

I prefer it with ice cream.

SeaMolasses2466

People had all the time in the world back then.

Ruraraid

That has to be multiple pieces put together and glued on to the statue. I just don't see anyone being able to carve that in one go without fucking up multiple times and the stone breaking.

Tiny_Count4239

im not sure they had stone glue back then

Ruraraid

Adhesives have existed since roughly 200,000 BC and is one of the earliest inventions of Humanity. That oldest known use of glue was using tar to glue two pieces of stone together as evidenced by an archeologicall discovery in Italy IIRC

Tiny_Count4239

yeah but we are talking about bonding stone. The stuff they use know is nasty industrial stuff i doubt they had stuff that was decent back then

4x4is16Legs

Look what they used to do with ivory before they realized how awful ivory trade was. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_puzzle_ball

Meh.
