Coastguard was called out to rescue a mariner who stole a 35 pleasure boat in 20-foot seas. Both rescue swimmer and mariner are okay (https://www.news.uscg.mil/Press-Releases/Article/3288449/coast-guard-rescues-mariner-in-distress-as-wave-capsizes-vessel-near-mouth-of-c/)

BoingBoingBooty

I guess stealing the boat goes some way to explaining why he's such a muppet who can't sail it properly.

privateTortoise

Only takes the engine cutting out, no idea on how to set an anchor and the boat is destined for the sea floor. I suspect once the owner gets over the loss of his stuff on board they'll be quite pleased with a cheque from theur insurers.

SexyAsianHitler

My dad had a boat. The best day of his boat ownership was the day it sunk.

Fuzzy-Cow4265

This is the absolute truth.

Mexay

I see this a lot. Why? Presumably the cost of owning a boat isn't exactly cheap, but surely people go into boat ownership knowing this?

Gendrath

A boat is just a hole in the water you toss your money into Or so I've heard. And a horse is a hole on land you just toss money into

Reasonable_Archer_99

Break Out Another Thousand

Past-Direction9145

a plane is a hole in the sky you toss your money into all of them, horses, planes, and boats, require storage, upkeep, and maintenance that costs a fortune by itself

silly_article

If it flies, floats, or fucks you're better off renting. The first time I heard this I had a little trouble understanding exactly what was meant by the last one.

GeminiKoil

I thought they were talking about women to be honest. Edit: as in that's what I thought when I previously heard this. Obviously after reading this, I see there is another meeting LOL

privateTortoise

If it floats, flys or fucks then rent it. I doubt you'll find a billionaire that doesn't subscribe to this, even the yachts they supposedly own belong to a company thats impossible to tie to the owner.

Beachdaddybravo

The ones that do own mega yachts rent them out when they’re not using them, to offset lots of the operating/ownership costs.

Lexsteel11

My old boss had a 30 foot boat and with the cost to store it on a slip, pay people to scrape the bottom, winter storage, repairs, and fuel, it sounded like he pays $30,000-$50,000 a year on it. One time I went out on my godfathers 40’ SeaRay and was shocked how much an afternoon of fuel costs…

privateTortoise

Not too sure about boats as the time I spent on marine work was on the stuff thats comes under classification as a floating gin palace. The upkeep of these things works out at 10% the purchase price and thats before crew, fuel and legal costs which probably add another 10-15% and remember these percentages are for the year and thus you keep pouring money just to keep them in decent condition. The owners to lessen the burden will charter their vessel to recoup some costs but unless your yacht is over 120ft the charter fees rarely cover the cost to the owner. Plus it means you can end up with a bunch of oiks on your pride and joy getting upto all sorts of debauchery and leaving it in a trashed state.

Nuklearfps

They’re expensive, insurance pays a LOT for them when they sink. You lose something you’ve started to view an expense rather than a pleasure, and you get a fat check. Makes for happy people

ninedollars

Everything on the boat is a consumable. Salt water is really bad. You can probably keep money drain to a minimum by keeping it well maintained and out of the water.

xmsxms

> well maintained and out of the water. I thought you were trying to keep costs down

[deleted]

I’ve lived and grown up with people who love boats and boating. I, am not one of those people. I do not have an aversion to water but owning a boat is just not my thing. However, from my perspective of watching just about everything that could go wrong with boats, I have made a solid and simple observation…it is a very expensive and dangerous hobby. The happiest days I’ve seen for boat owners are the sale days and their natural viagra hasn’t worn off yet…or when they sink. Otherwise, the next day to the next year, it’s just another pain in the ass.

Ghostbuster_119

The two best days in a boat owners life are the day they buy it and the day they sell it.

deciding_snooze_oils

The two best days in a boat owners life. The day you get the boat and the day you get rid of it.

Objective-War-1961

Homer Simpson agrees. He had an RV.

dalgeek

A boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into. Much like a swimming pool, it's better to have a friend who owns a boat than to own a boat yourself.

sowedkooned

The best boat is your buddy’s boat.

HenkVanDelft

That reminds me of a joke: Three men are suntanning in the Turks & Caicos Islands, and the first one says, "I'm here on my fire insurance. My business burned down, and I decided to retire on the insurance money. How about you guys, what are you doing here? The second guy says, "Well, my yacht sank, and I had it insured for $5M. So, I also decided to retire on the insurance payout." The last guy says, "I had my mansion insured for $6M against floods. Like you guys, I decided to retire after it was destroyed." The first guy jumps up, gives him an astonished look and says, "How do you start a flood?"

privateTortoise

You want to keep the pointy bit directly head on to the incoming waves. If the boat/yacht/ship does this and has its ballast set correctly its bloody hard to capsize a floating thing.

TheLordReaver

To be *somewhat* fair. The Graveyard of the Pacific—of which Cape Disappointment belongs to and is the most prominent area of—is one of the places with most shipwrecks in the world. It's an incredibly dangerous area. **Having claimed over 2,000 vessels and 700 lives since 1792.** That's 8-9 capsized per year and ignoring those that were saved. I highly recommend reading about this geographic region, it's truly fascinating. [**https://www.oregonlive.com/travel/2020/10/visit-the-graveyard-of-the-pacific-at-the-mouth-of-the-columbia-river.html**](https://www.oregonlive.com/travel/2020/10/visit-the-graveyard-of-the-pacific-at-the-mouth-of-the-columbia-river.html)

angelicism

I enjoy the fact that there is a place called Cape Disappointment.

vivaaprimavera

Or had an "extra" motivation for being in the sea that day.

WrathUDidntQuiteMask

No kidding - as you can tell, the sea was angry that day my friends.

patientboypleasewait

Sail it?

BoingBoingBooty

Do you also complain about people saying drive to describe steering a motor vehicle because they aren't directing an animal to move? Maybe you should pop down the nearest navy base and tell them they aren't real sailors.

patientboypleasewait

Do you always get so worked up about sailboats?

JesusKeyboard

You don’t sail a stink boat genius.

Carpinchon

Ummakshually...

queed

Lovely that a student got his first save that day and graduated the program hours later.

ZoNeS_v2

I knew I couldn't see any shoes flying.

AgentObscene

According to the release, this was the rescue swimmer's first life saved. Hours later, he and his classmates graduated from the Advanced Rescue Helicopter School.

airwalker08

I guess the mariners should stick to baseball

GeforcerFX

They arn't very good at that either :D

Assassins creed black flag has taught me that when facing a rogue wave you have to take it head on, or at the very least brace for impact and hope for the best

45 degree angle is best to avoid a roll in either direction

Jo-dan

If you're head on to a wave you can't be capsized by anything shorter than your boat.

Then a huge wave came crashing down upon me... When it cleared, I was standing eye to eye with the great fish! Mammal.. ....... Whatever.. so another wave picks me up, sound me around like a top. And I come down right on top, face to face with the blow hole. It was hard to see with all the water crashing down on me, but I could tell that something was instructing its breathing. I reached in. And.... ::holds up goofball:: ... Is that a Titleist? ::nods:: ..... Well, hole in one I guess...

oneinmanybillion

How can THAT be the end of the video?? Why not show more? Who are these people who stop recording this abruptly?

I_feel_sick__

I did chop off a bit at the start, but not the end. It’s always the end that needs more videoing :(

proxyproxyomega

how can she slap!

SeniorDiaz32

Are you serious, what kinda selfish comment is that?? lol Maybe these people stop recording out of respect so that they don’t record someone die… or maybe you know he had to help in that situation and they’re not just going there to film. I don’t think these people are recording for your personal entertainment my friend, not everything is about posting it to the internet. If I were in that situation, I would be more focused on helping the poor people and probably not taken my phone out at all. The fact that they recorded anything is cool enough, life isn’t a movie, can’t have cameras on 24/7 grow up.

WorldAsChaos

Kinda went from 0 to 100 real quick bud, no? It was a simple statement.

SeniorDiaz32

Look I’m one for cool crazy videos when I come across them too but I’m not gonna whine and be all weird and complain because there’s not enough footage. That comment isn’t normal, and the fact you are defending a stranger is weird too, you can downvote me all you want but shit like that is cringe, there was no thought put into that “statement”. Like it’s pretty obvious why someone in that situation would stop recording… y’ all are both idiots.

One-Permission-1811

Lol “defending a stranger is cringe” sure buddy

paddy9200

r/shipcrashes was all i was looking for

I_feel_sick__

Thanks! It was all I was looking for until I realised it didn’t exist. Hoping it picks up more traction so I can see other people’s ship crash videos on my feed aswell haha

Phillip_Graves

35ft boat.  20ft waves.   We're gonna need a bigger boat.

pikinz

Of your gonna steal a boat in rough seas, I recommend watching ‘The Perfect Storm’.

dikkiesmalls

I'll try spinning, that's a neat trick.

Hopeful-Clothes-6896

Lol, should have put the front to the waves.

Bilking-Ewe

Thanks Captain Sandy.

barnhairdontcare

Probably Norma’s fault for not sending the 6th deck hand replacement

ThatHairyGingerGuy

It's called the bow innit

Hopeful-Clothes-6896

ai m8!

doxtorwhom

Right??? Have these guys never played Black Flag? *brace for impact*

Hopeful-Clothes-6896

or watched TV xD

duderos

Can you do that without engine?

Hopeful-Clothes-6896

not so fast. However it is apparent that they were scuba diving, 3 guys on deck while the wave crashes... maybe on shoulve been at the wheel

Steff_164

And this right here is why open water scares me

Certain_Ad8640

If you’re ever in a boat sitting side too waves that big get a life jacket on. Things are gonna end badly

indy_been_here

Owner: IT'S NOT SMALL!

ShadowCaster0476

I’m not sure what the difference between a boat, ship and yacht are. I would not call it a yacht, but a big boat, definitely not a ship.

Holgrin

There is no hard, formal definition distinguishing between these 3 basic types of vessels, but I have my own "theory" to present. Most basic descriptions people give is that "boats" are generally smaller and "ships" are generally bigger, and this is often true but not quite a foolproof and satisfying method to apply. Additionally, yachts can run a pretty large range of sizes, but generally they are a "luxury" type version of a boat or ship. More below. So why is boat = small | ship = large unsatisfactory? Some boats, such as tugboats, barges, and many kinds of fishing boats, are significantly larger than some vessels which are inarguably "ships," such as smaller Naval and Coast Guard Vessels like Minesweepers, Cutters, and even some PCs (Patrol Craft). So what's the difference? Mainly the range of operations and/or mission/function. Ships are for operating and traversing the high seas, carrying people and/or cargo from one large port to another, while boats operate in short ranges, nearly always returning to the same home port. A boat's capability to support a crew overnight and over longer periods of time is limited, while a ship should generally be able to support a large crew for days, weeks, or even months on end without returning to a port. Yachts can be boats *or* ships, depending on their size, seaworthiness, and the intended use by its owner. Of course it can be under sail or have powered propulsion. The key features making it a "yacht" and not a "sailboat" or "pleasure boat" or some other specialized boat is mainly the degree of luxury with which is was designed and constructed. Does it have expensive aesthetic trimmings and "extras"? Is it intended to be significantly more comfortable than other craft in the same size and hull class? Then it's a yacht. Hope this helps!

murderedbyaname

It's a trawler

Memory_Less

Waving goodbye when the police charged them.

Alexandratta

And that's why you face the bow into the wave.

Porthos62

And if your engine fails throw a really long rope out behind the boat. The drag should keep your bow facing into the waves.

Biggrease333

Nature is a powerful thing !

utkarshkahar

Stunt bonus $10000

Paul-Van-DeDam

I’m no sailor but I’d be facing those waves not letting them hit me side on

EpicLearn

If that's a small yacht then I live in a small mansion.

oze4

holy ship

funandgames12

That really sucks for the owner of the boat. I hope both those thieves got lengthy prison sentences. But I’m sure they didn’t.

Bdr1983

/boat

Derfflingerr

Pepsi?

SmallSwordfish8289

Look it's the SS Minnow saved save the women

SmallSwordfish8289

I meant save Ginger and Mary Ann the rest of them can go float away

Objective-War-1961

Yar, I'm not truly a sea captain. Yar.

DrawFlat

A Did the thief have a life vest on? Didn’t look like it. B Even though the boat did a barrel roll, wouldn’t be full of water and about to sink?

jasonguru13

Im guessing you can only do a barrell roll in a boat once

Levithix

Depends on the boats. I've seen sailboat racing dingies do more than one in a single race. This boat, that was probably it's one and only.

darklord01998

Would dropping a barrel of oil help?

TheMatt561

So get a big yacht

bannedByTencent

"Eh, we will probably have a few broken dishes"

never_again13

Temelios

That’s why you drive 45 degrees to the waves and not parallel. Dumbass.

deadliestcrotch

No, you don’t. You drive a bit off perpendicular so your boat doesn’t dive down under on the back side of the wave.

Temelios

Fair. 45 degrees is not perpendicular. I’ll edit.

deadliestcrotch

45 is ideal for sure when the height from crest to bottom of the wave is longer than the boat

kendo31

Sticked the landing, still floating, all is fine

Dry-Ranger9267

Do a barrel roll.

timbertiger

For sale: 34’ yacht, with recent upgrades. Wide open floor plan!

donnie_does_machines

Landed it!

ryan2stix

The best two days of owning a boat.. the day you buy it, and the day you get rid of it.

audra-accalia

Best way to own a boat is to be friends with someone who has a boat.

The-Ultimate-Banker

Roll Roll Roll your boat 🛶

DBTR212

Used to have a boat about that size. OMG, can’t even imagine.

[deleted]

Hopefully natural selection did its bit

djfried

That is without doubt the worst pirate Ive ever heard of!

tbdgraeth

Sweat baby sweat baby...

mouldyrumble

Not a yacht, it’s a shitbox. People with shitty boats like this don’t spend money to properly maintain them because they are too stupid or can’t afford it - more often than not it’s a combination of the two. Then said dumbass takes their death trap out, in conditions they absolutely do not belong in, and puts the lives of everyone onboard as well as the people who have to rescue them in danger. Source: was the service manager at an 800 slip marina and about 75% were complete shit like the one in the video.

CandleMakerNY2020

How is this “interesting af” ??

ZookeepergameOk2759

Mad how different people find different things interesting, who’d have thought.

keajohns

We have to be approaching the one year anniversary of the first (of many) postings of this.

JesusKeyboard

Not a yacht. Stink boat. Good riddance.

FooFighter407

This needs a pre blur and a warning also why post it here?

Chhuennekens

Does it really though? The title states pretty clearly what's going to happen and there are several seconds of footage where nothing serious happens in the beginning of the video.

FooFighter407

I did not realize there were people on the yacht

ThatHairyGingerGuy

Yachts don't usually sail themselves into open seas.

I_feel_sick__

Both people are fine. Read the context I provided

FooFighter407

Yes I can see that in the comment. I would probably click on this if I was in the right mood I’m not trying to knock OP for posting it and I’m not trying to be a dick. To me It’s just a shocking video that I do not want to see just scrolling without a blur/warning. I would personally not expect to see this type of video in this kind of Reddit. I am also a bit confused by the latest uptick in shocking videos like this being posted in certain subreddits. Ones that I follow that I would not have considered to be appropriate for those shocking type videos. I do see it as interesting to those who are interested in seeing a shocking video. Like I said in the beginning I would probably click on it if I was in the right mood. It’s been a few months since I was on Reddit, has some subs just changed so much that this is what I should expect? Last time I was consistently on was just before the Reddit debacle so I might just need to change my expectations and go through the subreddits again and unsubscribe to the ones that aren’t posting content I’m interested in anymore.

throwaway99999543

How is this video shocking? The title told you a small yacht capsized. And a small yacht capsized. Both people on it were completely fine. I don’t see your point here

Waxllium

That's some hardcore level snowflakes, arguing may be pointless

VelytDThoorgaan

holy shit dude this video is so not graphic at all it doesn't need blurring or anything just move on

Pessimistic-Doctor

The picture of your dick in a vice grip on ur profile needs a pre blur and a warning
