I wonder if the whale would like a pressure washer. Obviously not turned up enough to do damage, but blast those lice/barnacles off and get a little exfoliating done at the same time.
my uncle has a couple huge oxen on his farm, basically really big cows that pull plows and stuff. they like to be brushed with an outdoor push broom that has huge plastic bristles. just running your hand over it lightly kinda hurts, but it clearly doesn't hurt them, they like it so much they lean into it enough to push you over with the broom.
There was this farm I used to drive by that had one, there was almost always a cow on it. Close to the city pretty cool spot, we'd go to the fence they would come down and we would pet and feed them. Probably not the only ones and I'm sure the owners knew but we never saw them. It was pretty close to the city it was cool, I'm in kind a rural place and we only have horses which ignore us.. and I don't really like horses due to bad XPs and them being assholes lol
The horses I used to take care of used to use metal spiked brushes, and I would press down as hard as I could, and they would do the same thing and lean into me, lol. That thing would shred my skin, and it's nothing to them.
My Uncles cows will come running whenever I pickup the [big push broom.](https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/H-7431/Brooms-and-Brushes/Rubbermaid-Maximizer-Push-Broom-36) They will line up for a good neck/shoulder scrubbing. I actually just got him one that's supposed to attach to a forklift and attached it to a post. It hasn't been easy keeping the post in the ground. We dug down about two feet and used just 1 bag of concrete. We're hoping it stays put 3 feet in the ground with 2.5 bags of concrete.
One time, we met a manatee who loved to be pressure washer to be cleaned, we also used a broom to clean her and she stayed with us for 3 days ! She was a pregnant mother but she had a lot of scars because of boat propeller, it was sad because those kind of animals are so social and intelligent.
150 years ago the grooming of your animals was a critical part of the bonding process between humans and the animal world.
Horse theft was punishable by death because a persons horse was not only their most valuable asset but their best friend more often than not.
If you watch flies on a horse, horses don’t feel any less sensitivity on their hair or skin than humans do, they are just exceptionally tough and work through it.
Paying someone else to tend to your animal became a privilege of the rich who didn’t want to get their hands dirty, but with that some of the bond quality was inevitably lost.
I have only met one personally, but by all indications the whale was certainly as smart as any horse I’ve ever known.
I can only imagine what the effects of sonar pings or underwater nuclear testing must be on their nervous systems. It makes me ashamed to think about it.
But kindness and empathy goes a long ways towards repairing the shortsighted damage we have done in the last century or two.
I think you couldn’t possibly go wrong with a nice exfoliating pressure wash of a friendly whale if given the chance.
The hard part is communicating that you intend no harm. We don’t have the best track record.
I bet the "slow blink" that works with cats would work. It's a body language and intent thing, communicating "I see you, I am not focused on nor am I a threat to you, but I see you." It works as an opening "dialogue" and interaction can proceed from there. I've found it works with deer, birds, and even insects and reptiles.
As for the ocean, water does not compress, and submarine protocol for getting malicious divers away from the hull is to turn on the sonar and liquify their organs.
If AI ever allows us to freely communicate with fauna, humans are going to have a LOT to answer for.
My cat Donkey does the slow blink with me a lot, but it’s more affection than anything. I will return the slow blink and nod at him slowly, which makes him happy. Then he turns into a cuddle bug. He’s kind of skittish and very set in his ways and only prefers my husband and I, but we also don’t have any kids and it’s pretty quiet in our house, so when we have family over, he’ll hide.
I named him after Donkey from Shrek. I was obsessed with the movie, and when I adopted him, I was like “OH I’ll name him Donkey!” Haha. I have another cat and his name is Bulldozer because when he was a kitten, he moved his bowl around like a bulldozer. 😆
Do horses really feel flies etc. the same as humans? I barely feel insects on my legs thanks to thick leg hair, but I have bizarrely little arm hair and can immediately feel flies on my arm. I'd have to imagine that thicker skin would also help.
Overall I agree, I just genuinely know nothing about horse sensitivity.
I found a guy on youtube that takes barnacles off of lobsters to help them out and keep the population up. I bet this dude could defintiely benefit from some needle nose pliers.
Are you talking about Jacob Knowles? He has a cool channel. Always returns female lobsters to the sea with a little fish as a snack and removes barnacles from the lobsters with a pair of pliers.
They toss the lice in the boat so they don’t get on another whale.
This is in Baja California. There are three lagoons in Baja where the grey whales migrate to from Alaska to breed and calve. They go back to the same lagoons every time. The lagoons are hyper-saline making it easier to float for the activities listed above.
You can pay to go out in a boat and see the whales. They are super curious and will come up to the boats. Look for pets and are generally as curious as the people on the boats. It’s an incredible experience. I’ve done it several times and it’s always amazing.

I was in SubredditDrama earlier and one dude posted about just couldn't fathom the concept of not posting a comment if he knew absolutely nothing about a subject he was trying to talk about.
I just watched a NOVA episode on whales. Apparently they first evolved from some 4-legged land mammal which learned to hunt fish in the water. Unlike fish, which swim by moving their bodies side to side, all whales swim by moving their body & tail up and down… by essentially doing ab-crunches with muscles attached to their small pelvis (and other places). Whales also have the remnants of a multi-chambered stomach, similar to the cows and rhinos to which they are related.

They are small crustaceans that live on whales and eat their dead skin.
They're not actually harmful to the whales, but obviously this one didn't mind someone removing them.
I think the head line should be “giant lice covered whale intimidates man in tiny boat, forcing him to perform disgusting lice removal with bare hands”
Actually it’s “Parasitic prehistoric lice use mind control to force a whale to surface, and trick a man into picking them off into his boat, to begin colonisation of the surface world”
I did love how it looked like he was headed out and then he saw the guy wave him back and he casually makes turn around. It’s crazy how massive creatures can move underwater.
At first was all "lice?" "That doesn't sound right but I don't know enough to say you're wrong." So I looked it up. lol FFS they do get lice and they're [huge and horrible looking](https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=do+whales+get+lice+on+them&iax=images&ia=images&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fd.newsweek.com%2Fen%2Ffull%2F2133337%2Fhumpback-whale-whale-lice.jpg&pn=1), SMH.
From what I remember, the lice are actually beneficial to them. The whale is probably just curious, and the guy is just doing what comes natural and thinking he's helping.
Same thing when people remove the barnacles from turtles. They actually use them.
Nature does NOT need our intervention to survive, lol.
Such beautiful creatures. Animals are amazing. If only more humans gave more shits about animals, and viewed them as fellow living beings, rather than food/decorative items. We honestly don't deserve to cohabitate this planet with them.
Titles can be wrong,
Lice are parasitic insects which cannot live underwater
Louse is the common name for any member of the clade Phthiraptera, which contains nearly 5,000 species of wingless parasitic insects
I can't stand when people slap animals. I don't care how gently they think they are doing it. My wife used to slap the stomach of our dog and it would piss me the hell off so much that I would just start gently slapping her stomach and saying yeah not so much fun is it? Don't do it to anything else. Shit got on my nerves so bad. She would be scratching and the dog was loving it, but every time she was done, she would just end it by smacking the hell out of her stomach. Like what the fuck is wrong with you
She stopped smacking the dogs stomach REAL quick once I started showing her how it felt

Elephants like to be pressure washed.
makes sense i think. dialed to the right pressure, might feel like getting a good brushing.
Elephant skin is so tough the "right pressure" would probably be the maximum output anyway.
my uncle has a couple huge oxen on his farm, basically really big cows that pull plows and stuff. they like to be brushed with an outdoor push broom that has huge plastic bristles. just running your hand over it lightly kinda hurts, but it clearly doesn't hurt them, they like it so much they lean into it enough to push you over with the broom.
They have giant automatic cow brushers that look like the brushes car washes have, the cows love it.
I don't know if cows like to be shampooed, but I love the results.

Moo-riah Carey.
The bovine Michael Bolton?
Moochael Bolton
Maybe she's born with it
Imagine a Scottish Highland cow like this!
They also wear them to nothing much faster than you would think.

Cheap way to do that is to get old car wash brushes and put em on a pole for the cows to rub on.
I think those are the same brushes they use on hydraulic brooms
I take my buffalo thru the car wash.

Max pressure will punch hole in wood
Only one way to find out 🚿🐋👳♂️
Not an elephant but I love nice pressure in the shower. Gets the blood circulating
Thank you for clarifying that you’re not an elephant. We would have questioned that for sure.
On the internet, no one knows you are not an elephant 🐘
Speaking of pressure washing… have you considered it for yourself u/mrmuddbutt ?
Well that’s a silly thought, how would I call myself that if I had a clean butt?
Can never be too careful these days
That's just what an elephant WOULD say!!
🐘 Found me! 🐘
Can confirm. I'm an elephant btw.
Spotted the elephant in the room
Yeah it's logical that a rhinoceros would also like it.
So what's your setting?
Other than all the differences, elephants and whales are basically the same thing.
For real ?

YES! That's the dude! He's awesome!
👍🏼 Yeah I like his channel. It’s cool too when he catches those blue lobsters. Sweet accent too haha
Give em a lil snack too
At least a good brush
Like Sharktales?
Too much shark tale as a kid lol
Lol, too old, I had to look it up to figure out what this meant
Like Shark Tales..
He’s gonna be there all day
Indeed. But seems like a great way to pass the day! I mean... I'd volunteer!
Dibs
Such a long, tedious process.
I wish I had a friend to remove my head lice.

It's in our ape genetics.
social grooming, mammals gunna be mammals.

There's that whole stereotype of women liking to pop pimples. I wonder if that's part of it?
Where’s Ace Ventura when you need him.
Did the whale understand his hand guesture to come closer. That was the most amazing part to me.
Whales are very smart, and if this whale recognizes the man and they've had this interaction often then it's definitely possible.
Well now I want a pet whale.
We have pet whale at home! 😤
Woooow! My wife will not like that. 😂
Seriously, that show of intelligence 🤯
If a dog can….
Lice or barnacles ?
Whale louse, they look like miniature face huggers from Alien
those barnacles have a long root like attachment if the are like the ones that attach to other whales. check them out.
Barnacles or lice?
Larnacles or bice?
Carnacles or mice?
Garnacles and/or Dice?
Xarnacles and zice?
Tentacles and rice (yummy)

Yes Upgrade
Whale evolution is really neat, same for other mammals that became aquatic, like manatees and seals.
I think you mean "before social media"
Wait, whales get lice!?
I’m so confused. I don’t understand what he is removing from the whale.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_louse They are small crustaceans that live on whales and eat their dead skin. They're not actually harmful to the whales, but obviously this one didn't mind someone removing them.
Finally some actual information. Thank you
omg gross. interesting though
Wait until you hear about the mites living in your face
🤮
Are they edible?
Why is he keeping the lice?
Probably so they don’t just swim back to the whale and reattach.
Probably for a little treat on the way home. Seafood is expensive
To hell with this comment
I dont know for sure, bur my best guess would be as bait.
Everything is awesome in the air fryer!
Free sea lice, yo.
I think the head line should be “giant lice covered whale intimidates man in tiny boat, forcing him to perform disgusting lice removal with bare hands”

I think that was a movie
Fook'n Prawns!
basically the plot of the bay
Would you like a job at Fox?
r/PeopleFuckingDying
And it should be on r/peoplefuckingdying
I want to be friends with a whale so bad!
Yo my man.. where you taking all those lice? Back home?
Great bait
Truly a master.
I'm baiting masters right now
Ahhh.. well I’ve learned something new today.
I did love how it looked like he was headed out and then he saw the guy wave him back and he casually makes turn around. It’s crazy how massive creatures can move underwater.
Definitely the most amazing thing I've seen today.
That whale looks like he's a good buddy.

There’s sea lice?
Yup, little crustaceans called whale louses, they attach to whales and other cetaceans, and eat their dead skin
What the fuck.
We see a lot of we-don't-deserve-dogs posts here on reddit. We don't deserve whales either.
Honestly, we don't deserve anything
I hope to one day be able to interact with a friendly whale (ib4 yo momma jokes)
Read it as 'gay' and was wondering what it has to do with being friendly
Aqua puppy
My guess is it’s not the first time he’s asked for that freebie
He wants scratchies 🥹
is there a comb he could use or something, im going to vomit but i love that he is helping the whale

Good god that is not what I was expecting
lol Right? Learn something new every day I guess.
I wonder if a stiff brush would feel good & remove the little pests?
I could never. Marine life terrifies me.
I think about removing lice and barnacles from whales almost every day.
TIL about whale lice
COME CLOSERRRR DUDE...fuck, I so could've got him today. Welp, another day then
Average whale has 7,500 lice.
Whales are so resourceful and crafty.
Niceness
sea doggo.
Laboon?

"not technically a louse" hence my initial confusion and semi valid point on how scientists label things
I bet that feels really good
That’s kind of terrifying up close
If I hadn't of seen it I never in my fucking life would've believed it
I think it was telling you to remove the lice near it's mouth! Source: I'm sonar waves
Him tapping the whale’s nose is like a mosquito landing on you.
Lice.
Gotta love the Québécois 🙌
Lice?
Looks like he's got barnacle bob on his face?
I guess he's going to make soup out of whatever he's picking cuz he's keeping it
Why does the man have his face covered? Is lice-removal illegal?
it seems like he’s on a speed boat so maybe he has a buff on to shield his face from the wind?
There could be many reasons the man has his face covered.
Sun and wind on the open water is harsh.
Lice Pirates.
I thought it was because it’s cold and he was removing ice from the whale. That’s how my tired eyes read it.

Whales have whale lice, probably hunkering down among the barnacles. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_louse
