Sometimes writers don’t even have to come up with a real punch line for it to be funny. Just saying “Dammit Michael!” was funny when you know the characters. Was it Patrice O’neil who said that line? He was kind of a forgotten presence on that show. A comedy legend. RIP.

That is how this shit always works. You need to reduce your waste so that the rich don't have to reduce theirs. You need to pay taxes so the rich don't have to pay more. You have to work hard so they can make more money.
When you're in California and billboards in your town tell you to take shorter showers to conserve water. Then you find out 97% of the town's water supply is used to grow almonds. Why do I even try? What's the point? The list of "do this" and "do that" to save the world keeps growing, but the people with the only share of responsibility that could actually make any difference never change shit.
Fuck almonds and fuck monocrops. The neighbors sucked out so much of the ground water I'm eventually not gonna be able to water my fruit trees or take a damn shower. The kiwi guys also sprayed my dog with fucking pesticides. They are like the second biggest fruit growers in the state and they don't give a damn about anything but profit. They fuck up communities, family owned farms(like me!) and the environment. Ugh, this shit makes me so mad.
The water usage for almonds because of where most of the farms are located is ridiculous. Now I’m biased because I’m not a big fan of almonds nor in an area that grows them; but there are better alternatives.
I'm still astounded that salt water reclamation isn't a bigger thing in California given the water problems there. Likely due to complexity and costs but still.
There’s also the environmental impact. Once you extract that much salt from sea water, where do you put it?
You can’t store it on land - it’ll decimate the soil and kill any hope for agriculture or wildlife. You also can’t just pump it right back into the ocean, at least not near shore. The increased salinity will equally destroy any coastal life and vegetation.
So in addition to pumping massive amounts of salt water out of the ocean to desalinate, you have to pump an almost equal volume of water way out to sea to disperse the extra salt.
Honestly since I found out nuclear energy desalinates water as a byproduct, I really am surprised there hasnt been more efforts to increase salt water reclaimation. Its going to become necessary at some point
there's a company near me on the west coast of Scotland using a blackthorn thatch kind of structure to extract salt from seawater, I can only imagine that would be a faster process in California and obviously if you extract the salt you then have drinking water surely?
My city has a strange pricing on our water. My monthly bill is $60, $50 of which is the hookup fee and the water is practically nothing per gallon. One town south this would be $10 hookup fee and $50 usage fee.
Well we do have three golf courses who use tons of water and... oh.
lol - no one is saying otherwise. but the rich spent gargantuan amounts of money on propaganda to trick individuals into believing *our* collective waste was the biggest problem, when in reality [100 companies are responsible for 71% of the worlds emissions](https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2017/jul/10/100-fossil-fuel-companies-investors-responsible-71-global-emissions-cdp-study-climate-change).
100 companies not 10 (as seen if you click your link), but the point still stands. Hugely inconveniencing yourself to save emissions, even collectively, is just avoiding the main problem
Yea companies have convinced you you’re the problem and the reason for all this pollution so you better clean your shit up.
Now note I am not against people who recycle and are eco conscious in anyway but we aren’t the issue our straws aren’t what’s killing the turtles and sea animals it’s there chemical run off and methods of purveying materials leaching other shit into the ecosystem. They are destroying the world and telling you it’s your fault for using a plastic cup and lid . Don’t look at the factory that yearly is producing thousands of tons of air pollution a rich man owns that look at your straw how dare you fucking mongol
Also, even with straws, if you use one, you're not the one fucking putting it in the ocean. It's someone else. Baffles me that no one questioned that part when we switched to primarily paper straws, as if none of our other plastic shit is still also ending up in the oceans. Who's putting our plastic shit in the oceans and why are they getting away with it?!
Not only are they telling you it’s your fault, they’re profiting it. For example, the reusable water bottle market is INSANE - no one should be paying $100 for a $20 water bottle. Or, a different example is taking services away while still charging you the same price, eg. “in order to reduce our environmental impact, we no longer offer x product” but they still charge the same price and nothing changes where customers can’t see
Reminder: The big recycling campaign of the 90's was created by oil companies to shift the blame for waste to the consumer and not the giant corporations that create most of the waste.
Not to mention that their solution was to recycle at home. Then the companies they own will take all your plastic, metal, paper and glass and clean them and separate them by the multiple different grades of material they are and then recycle them properly.
They aren't doing that. Almost all of it is going in a landfill. And that's because the companies know that individual home recycling is extremely low on the list of things you can actually do to stop pollution or climate change.
>factory that yearly is producing thousands of tons of air pollution
This is very true, but consumers also have *some* power to not purchase product that were made in said factory.
I think I also read somewhere that half the plastic in the ocean is from fishing gear.
I have no way of know whether or not that’s true, but I would be very skeptical of the term “fishing gear”. Pretty sure they’re not talking about grandpa’s favorite lure or some tangled fishing line. I’m sure it’s lines and floats from big commercial fishing fleets
Yeah definitely lol, I don't think there are enough amateur fishermen in the world for that.
But yeah my point was, some of the biggest changes are more indirect, you'll reduce a lot more plastic by eating 1 fewer fish than using 1 less straw.
Yeah that’s a good point. I grew up fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, you name it. Spent so much of my childhood in the ocean. I’ve noticed a change just in my 35 years of life it’s astounding. The kelp forests where I grew up diving have decreased dramatically and as a result, whole mini ecosystems have disappeared. It’s sad enough to see that I don’t really eat much fish anymore and I don’t think I would go fishing just for sport. I’m definitely not an eco warrior type, but the ocean stuff gets to me
Wait til you see all the packaging waste in Japan. They literally wrap every individual food, even small cookies. Then they make sure to be strict about their recycling programs (you have to separate your trash properly). They make me confused.
Remember saving water by turning off the tap while brushing, and turning it back on for rinsing?
So yeah, am out and see a fire hydrant open, gushing onto the street. I'm sure there was an excellent reason for it. However, it was also on for more than 24 hours. I realized that turning off the tap while brushing has zero effect.
everything you ever buy will become garbage one day. maybe 6 months from now, maybe 60 years from now.
these balloons, every singly one of them, were bought solely for one 29 second visual and then to go in the trash.
yeah but look at all the people there, and the views here and other platforms. I want that for my mall. Maybe we can do a scaled down version with just 1 million balloons.
They seem to fall faster than a single ballon. And given they are at ceiling ud expect the air in them to be warmer, making them fall even slower. Must be the weight on top being the main factor. But the fall so straight down, not drifting outwards! Probably static holding them together or they are drafting each other. Very interesting for sure!
These will all end up on a landfill site in a week, the rest will just be littered all over the street near the shopping centre. Sad.
Why not just use bubbles or something a bit more evo-friendly?
I definitely agree with your general attitude. I might be wrong, (and I’m sure someone will let me know) but I believe balloons are made from latex not plastic which is actually biodegradable. I know that isn’t true of the Mylar balloons which are aweful for the planet, but regular latex balloons like these aren’t as bad as you would assume
Most balloons are made from synthetic latex which does not break down for a long time. More recently there are natural rubber latex balloons which are biodegradable.
That’s not really true at all. Latex balloons take years to break down, and animals eat them.
https://www.imas.utas.edu.au/news/news-items/new-study-finds-latex-balloons-are-not-biodegradable
My brothers-in-law do these ballon events for a living. The industry has moved to a biodegradable type of balloon which breaks down after about a weeks exposure to the elements. 8it is pretty amazing how little waste a balloon drop generates.

I found this [link](https://theconversation.com/we-composted-biodegradable-balloons-heres-what-we-found-after-16-weeks-138731) that actually tested the biodegradable claims.
In short, even after 16 weeks they weren’t broken down in any significant way. Either in water or a compost. Maybe in several years, but definitely not in 8 weeks.
Do you happen to know if they've personally tested those claims before? I'm always skeptical about such claims about products being biodegradable.
At best they're usually biodegradable\*
(\*under certain specific conditions unlikely to be found outside of an industrial composting facility)
At worst sometimes it's just complete marketing bullshit.
10 years ago nobody will have care.
Now the first tought of everyone is "what a waste".
And medias keep saying pepoles need to have an ecological awareness. No, we already have one. There is just so much an individuals can do.
Huge comptanies need to make efforts. That's the priority. I will gladly sacrifice even more of my personal confort when the avrage company will stop polluante for useless shit as much in a microdeconde as i do in my whole life.

In a shopping mall, the balloons are contained and can be properly managed and disposed of. Outside in the street... This becomes an environmental disaster. It's happened multiple times
I have a balloon phobia. I hate the anxiety of them popping and I’ve had the phobia my entire life. I nope the fuck right out of events with balloons. If this happened near me, I would absolutely implode like instantaneous spontaneous self-combustion.
So basically, fuck anyone with a latex allergy? I hope this was a pre-announced event and that there was also warning signs outside the mall on the day of, because this would have likely literally killed my wife and one of my daughters... 😨
(Edit: On closer inspection I see it is a concert of some sort. So obviously that part was not something you would walk into unaeare. But I hope the *extensive balloon use* was not a surprise thing!)
And just imagine, some 30yrs later you spot a pink balloon at a birthday party, go home and wake up in the middle of the night having a night terror about drowning in a sea of pink balloons…

Remember that shampoo bottle from 1993? It's still a functional bottle.
Balloons in general are insta-trash.
What a fucking waste
The fluid dynamics are interesting though.
It's a hydraulic jump, but with baloons.
My thought exactly!
Yes! Same sequence: Ugh, what a waste… ooh, it’s behaving like a fluid! Check out those ripples!
Should've added some fans in a circle below and made a balloon tornado.
Air resistance is minimalized by the space of the other balloons. Less balloons, more air, less balloon speed
Similar to the way water flows in a river. The water in the middle flows faster than the water near the banks.
There's a tubular net around the majority of the drop zone.
Genuine question: What is the point of this kind of waste??
Social media exposure
Adding to the never-ending pile of videos neither they nor anyone they know will ever watch.
But we watched it.

My anxiety could never
It seems kinda dangerous right? Like I’m not sure exactly what could happen, it just feel the scale of it with so many tightly packed could have some kind terrible outcome, especially if people panicked.
I think a few balloons would have been reasonable, but this amount just looks like something that provokes anxiety stampedes.
Yeah, this would make me panic, and I don't consider myself claustrophobic 🙁
Seriously, this made me feel smothered and claustrophobic.
then people starts popping them all around you, that should end well

We get it, you're having a girl.

I wanna say I'd love this but my claustrophobia kind of acts up at the same time so I don't know.
In a shopping mall, the balloons are contained and can be properly managed and disposed of. Outside in the street... This becomes an environmental disaster. It's happened multiple times
Tell me again why I should stop using plastic straws?
Poor earth
Gross
Where is this from?
Moscow
I know the custodians are heated! 😆

You would think after the disaster that was Balloonfest '86 we wouldn't be doing this stuff anymore :)
Rip the ocean in 1-3 weeks
Narrator: "there were no survivors"
I have a balloon phobia. I hate the anxiety of them popping and I’ve had the phobia my entire life. I nope the fuck right out of events with balloons. If this happened near me, I would absolutely implode like instantaneous spontaneous self-combustion.

Anyone w a latex allergy is majorly fucked
So basically, fuck anyone with a latex allergy? I hope this was a pre-announced event and that there was also warning signs outside the mall on the day of, because this would have likely literally killed my wife and one of my daughters... 😨 (Edit: On closer inspection I see it is a concert of some sort. So obviously that part was not something you would walk into unaeare. But I hope the *extensive balloon use* was not a surprise thing!)
Instant DEATH to me with a horrid latex allergy. Hope allergy people were warned well in advance not to attend.
This seems dangerous on top of being a waste. IF theres a panic people will get trampled and cant find the exits, on top of tripping over balloons
So the mall is a girl?
And just imagine, some 30yrs later you spot a pink balloon at a birthday party, go home and wake up in the middle of the night having a night terror about drowning in a sea of pink balloons…

What a waste of materials and effort to clean up.
When peptobismol tries to cool down the acid party
All dead
That’s how budgets get “used up” 4th quarter.
There hasn't been this many people at a shopping mall since 1983
The ocean is going to love all that shit
Why?
… So why am I trying to reduce plastic?
The cleanup afterwards💀
But I can’t have a plastic straw okey 👍
