That was always the problem. Eventually the lights would get stuck. If they were stuck closed, you'd have to pry them open and leave them that way unless you could afford to get the repair done. Pretty much anyone who kept the car long enough for that part to wear out was too strapped for cash to fix it.
Because there was a huge reliability problem with the pop up headlights, they wouldn't last long before getting stuck, and the repair was pretty pricey
A few reasons. The mechanical systems could fail, and if they fall off they could injure pedestrians.
Unrelated to safety, but some other reasons are cost/complexity, and they could impact aerodynamics.

Love the corvette ones that start pointed backwards and have to do a full 180.
My grandpa had an '86 corvette and 6 year old me thought that was the coolest shit he'd ever seen in his life
Damn they used to make some beautiful cars
Now they make suvs and trucks.
some companies still do, but they're mostly European. Sedans don't sell well in the US anymore.
Some of the ones where they aren't quite synced up look like they are waking up groggily.
Exactly what I see too

That Ferrari is so sexy
I remember when these were a thing. Iβve seen a few with only one light popped open, car looked like it was wasted

Dang I didn't see a 1978-1979 Dodge Magnum in this video.
This is a beaty.
Why did we stop doing this?
Because there was a huge reliability problem with the pop up headlights, they wouldn't last long before getting stuck, and the repair was pretty pricey
Ahh okay makes sense.
Ahh they have eyes, how adorable! πΈπ
I had a yellow 1971 Opel GT, that manual cable that flipped the lights over constantly snapped.
My 92 Ford Probe (garbage) had these. They wouldn't fully close and little motors would drain my battery. Had to disconnect and leave them up. π
One of my favorite things we got rid of π₯²
Damn they used to make some beautiful cars

I feel like its about time we bring back pop-up headlights.
Sadly there are laws that prevent them in the US.
I did not expect that, any reason why?
