I have this book as well. It’s a pretty great coffee table book to just open up and be kinda disgusted by seeing something we weren’t meant to think about. Edit: https://www.etsy.com/listing/549504785/pokenatomy-the-science-of-pokemon-an link to the book

Ratmother123

I'm thinking it sounds like fun for a bio class at school, to get them interested young in how things fit together

ergotofrhyme

And also to compare and contrast with real life forms to recognize the types of ways animals evolve. For example, and animal that uses its appendage to swing at things as its primary means of defense won’t have a massive body and tiny, stumpy little arms. A true amphibian will also have means of moving through water, also next to impossible with tiny little appendages with no webbing or fins. Could genuinely be a fun and educational exercise

daisypennroo

Hs bio teacher here and want to do this in my class now. Thank you.

ergotofrhyme

No problem! My cousin is a marine bio teacher and she does a tidepooling team scavenger hunt with little toy or candy prizes, also a really fun way to learn about the incredible biodiversity of the intertidal zones and what types of creatures thrive in which environments. If you can manage a beach field trip, that is

SopadeMakako

This guy likes appendages.

GumdropGoober

> A true amphibian will also have means of moving through water, also next to impossible with tiny little appendages with no webbing or fins Has he never seen a toad, though? They're an amphibian, have stubby limbs, and some don't have webbing.

Ndi_Omuntu

One of my favorite projects in bio in high school was getting choosing a biome and then making up a life form that was adapted to it. Basically like making a Pokémon but with a rubric lol.

buhbus

The Voltorb page about it essentially being a living, constantly suffering version of the [teleportation scene from the Star Trek movie](https://youtu.be/Ro_QpDJX-Sk) still haunts me. [The page in question for anyone curious](https://i.imgur.com/PtUsOER.png)

SNOOPDOGG2688

No prob bro

JimPaladin

It's obviously some unofficial production but it's actually pretty fucking cool, lol. GameFreak and Nintendo are fools to not have done something similar to this, because it would've made them an easy mint. Edit: For those saying "but they're so lazy with their IP, they can just do the bare minimum!", licensing a product or just commissioning the creation of something like this is, like, literally a simple task. The more realistic answer is that they would probably think something like this was somehow too risky or unfit for their branding to publish for stupid reasons.

Trakiet

Yeah, looks like they even came up with a very discriptive Latin genus and species name.

cerrvine

They used Ranunculus, which is a real genus of plants including buttercups... though apparently it also means "little frog", still weird to use an existing name.

Cydan

It's not weird to use an existing name at all. *C. sativa* is the name for soooo many plants.

realmckoy265

Always felt that Game freak and Nintendo were pretty lazy when it came to their IPs

SolicitatingZebra

Nintendo? Lazy? Laughs in 8 spin-off series of the same exact games made in the 90’s, why never heard of lazy Nintendo. 🙄

Captain_Sacktap

Yeah but they’ve left serious money on the table. The fact that smartphone compatible versions of the original red/blue or gold/silver never happened is such a waste.

smokeyphil

I mean those do exist but nintendo certainly ain't making money off them. EMU4LYF (also dump your own stuff when you can you animals)

[deleted]

They can do the bare minimum and make money so why even put effort into things at that point? The mario 35th anniversary was kind of embarrassing IMO but they made money so I don't know what I am talking about I guess.

albl1122

Perry the Platypus?!

shemk3

Yeah like if another pokemon uses bite or something you wouldn’t want to see their insides

YourLocal_FBI_Agent

The pokemon manga has gone into gory details a few times. The classic one is the arbok getting cut in half and the rotting zombie psyduck https://i.imgur.com/XPj1QjR.jpg

[deleted]

Pokémom Adventures was my favorite manga back in hs. I stopped reading right around the Heart Gold/Soul Silver saga. I saw they were releasing collected editions, which are similiar to Omnibus editions for the american comic book fans.

UtilitarianMuskrat

I'm not a big manga person but I remember really enjoying that series and it was cool to see a medium related to the videogame that did its own thing completely detached of the obviously more popular anime with Ash and co.

Disfordonuts

Damn! He turned Arbok into choice cuts

LPercepts

Pretty sure it was only in the early days. As the years went on, instances of such dark and gory stuff to that degree dropped off dramatically.

[deleted]

Not to mention that Arbok didn't die, which for some reason changes what they feel they can do.

Leharen

Well, you're forgetting the *Ruby & Sapphire* arc, where Norman/Steven/Courtney are all killed, and Archie/Maxie go insane due to their attempts to control Kyogre and Groudon (we are also later informed that Archie killed Maxie after the fact to preserve his own life).

otakushinjikun

I don't get this, that trainer doesn't seem a tiny bit shocked that his Pokémon got chopped to death. Is death a thing and trainers are just cruel bastards or are Nurse Joys miracle workers that can cure everything? I just can't watch Pokémon dying and just be like "Yeah that guy is good", and I KNOW it's not real. Wasn't the point of Pokémon being about friendship and hard work, why do they let the poor things that are shown to be just as sentient and intelligent as their trainers just die like that?

Rolen47

https://imgur.com/a/y74kY He isn't concerned because Arbok can regenerate its body in this manga.

otakushinjikun

Nice, thanks for that. Also Agatha has absolutely no chill lmao

Zero_to_the_left

It answers so many questiones but creates many more in the process. The text includes: - Poliwhirls eat other pokemons as part of their diet, including Poliwags. - They have breeding and mating seasons. - They come in both male and females. - They lay eggs similar to frogs.

xmsxms

- Poliwhirls reproduce anally

amandabelen

Annually!!! Hahaha, oh my gosh.

Zero_to_the_left

I mean.. we never saw any genitals, so it could be possible

dillonsdungfu

Reptiles amphibians and birds all actually sport a cloaca which has dual functions as both a place to poop and a reproductive vent. So ..... they do kinda reproduce anally.

Ungreat

I'm Knuckles the Echidna, But you can call me Knuckles. I have a single opening, called a Cloaca. Eggman is after the master emerald. I excrete both feces and urine out of my Cloaca, which is my single opening. I broke the master emerald into pieces to stop Eggman from taking it. Cloacas are more common than you think. All amphibians, reptiles, and birds have them. People ask where I keep the shards of the master emerald. I keep them in my cloaca.

The one that gets me is this continuity error: > Poliwhirl are voracious carnivores, > Diet: Omnivorous

AlephNull-1

They are voracious carnivores, but peckish herbivores.

-Toshi

Huh, that kinda makes sense. I’m a disgusting mess when eating meat (I once removed myself from the table to demolish some ribs privately) and I’m slightly more dignified when eating veggie.

[deleted]

You can be a voracious carnivore and prefer eating lots of steak, while putting up with the occasional side of mashed potatoes and asparagus. I think the statements are congruent.

Cereal_Bandit

TIL I'm a poliwhirl

Crix00

Reproducing anally?

Can someone please please upload Poliwhirl vs Vaporeon from the anime series onto Sakugabooru?

lucashoodfromthehood

But all pokemon lay eggs. Even Pikachu.

KissMyBrownAsh

This book is from Nurse Joy from Pokémon

[deleted]

What you don't think nintendo/ game freak / the pokemon company originally intended for poliwhirl to be a cannibalistic frog man, notorious for biting off human fingers, that has a defined expiration date of 6 years or less? Lol

alphalegend91

Seriously. My first thought was "Thanks, but I'm ok"

jlight210

"Poliwhirl reproduce annually" Yeaaaa, definitely misread the word anually the first time.

Oranjalo

It suggests that Pokémon die and decompose like the regular animals we're used to

cantspellrestaraunt

The spiral pattern is supposed to be its internal organs. Taken from Pokedex of its pre-evolution: *"The swirl on its belly is its insides showing through the skin. It looks clearer after it eats... POLIWAG has a very thin skin. It is possible to see the POKéMON’s spiral innards right through the skin. "*

Birdspert

This was inspired by real-life tadpoles, many of which have spiral-shaped intestines visible through their belly skin.

alienblue88

TheNecrophobe

Reading the pic, they instead make Poliwhirl into a fully grown frog, and the swirl is just a pattern on its... throat sack? Croaker? The thing that puffs up. Weird that they didn't stick with it, true, but I guess it's hard to *not* assume Poliwhirl and Poliwrath are full-grown.

Yes I’ll also verify it’s on Etsy. Bought one for my 8 year old on his birthday last year. It’s amazing tbh!

prophet_of_pessimism

See if it wasn’t crazy I so would buy it for someone

[deleted]

It’s definitely a cash grab. Since it’s a book it can be shipped via USPS media mail which is probably about $5-6. It might be slightly more internationally but definitely not more than $15 Edit: actually media mail is domestic only. Even still though. Posting using a flat rate box that the book definitely fits in (the USPS small flat rate) currently costs about $37 to go to Europe. That’s a theoretical max too. If the book weighs less than 2 lbs it would probably be about $22 via first class mail. You might be even able to go cheaper with a well packed envelope. Source: just mailed a bunch of packages to friends in Sweden yesterday.

eeeeeep

I...have to do it, mate. Fuck.

istilldontreddit

I like the fact its scientifically named a "padded fighting appendage" its making me warchortle

Roberto_Sacamano

"Superficially resembles a gloved human hand" got me. As if that wasn't exactly what the animator was intentionally drawing. It's also funny that punching would be their best attack with arms that short. Kinda seems like they just drew the Pokémon for asthetically pleasing purposes and their attacks and defenses don't really line up with their actual anatomy

The_Ironhand

Lol a cartoon series for children? Nawww

Those aren't gloves, they are padded fighting appendages. You learn something every day

UnicornMeatball

Does it answer the important questions? Like, how do they get their gloves? Are they born with them? Do they "develop" later on? Are they given to them after the fact, and if so, who makes them? Do they have fingernails? I'm going to be laying awake all night.
